Overview Details Customer Reviews Category Info Accessories Our take on the Boston Acoustics G212-4 by Ken Nail What's a component sub and why would I want one? A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back. Highly efficient bass performance Boston's mission: build a sub that will deliver loads of bass when connected to a moderately-powered amplifier. Efficient G2 subwoofers accomplish the mission, borrowing many design features from the top-of-the-line G5 Series subs, with the quality construction you expect from a Boston Acoustics speaker. Advanced materials and construction The G212-4 12" woofer features a thick foam surround that lets its cone move freely, for efficient output and warm-sounding bass. The SureSet terminals come equipped with two fuses to help protect the voice coil during momentary overdrive, and allow you to change the woofer out quickly in case a fuse is blown. RadialVent cooling improves power handling by using the cone's motion to pump hot air away from the sub's internal structure. Works in sealed and ported enclosures This subwoofer is optimized for use in small, sealed boxes ideal if you want tight, accurate bass. Like a little more boom? No problem, it's suitable for larger ported boxes as well. Whatever your goal, Boston G2 subs are ready to take on the challenge. It features the patented RadialVent cooling technology which directs airflow around the 2-1/2-inch voice coil for increased power handling. Materials: The G2124 woofer has a co-polymer woofer cone with a raised polypropylene dustcap and a large foam surround. The wrap-around gasket gives you a good seal whether you top-mount or bottom-mount the woofer. Terminals: The woofer has rugged spring post terminals that accept up to 8-gauge bare wire or pin connectors. Long Excursion: The woofer has a 2-inch peak-to-peak excursion for accurate deep bass output from a small sealed enclosure. Enclosure Recommendations Sealed Enclosure: The G2124 woofer is optimized for use in a small sealed enclosure with a 1.0 cu. ft. internal volume. Ported Enclosure: The woofer can also be used in a 2.0 cu. ft. ported enclosure with a 4" diameter, 13" long port, and tuned to 34Hz. Written By LE91163, Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 I bought one Boston G2 as a test to see if there was much difference between it and the two Sony Xplode 12" subs I have in my car. Well, I dropped it in place, and when I turned it up and the car literally shook and could feel the air pressure hitting me in the back of my head that I didn't get from the 2 Sony's.I figured if one sounds this good, I can't wait to see what two of them sound like so I bought a second Boston G2 and expecting delivery on Thursday!I like a variety of music The Beatles to Black Label Society and the tight sound is amazing. I have a pair of custom tower speakers in my house, and thinking of getting the 10's to replace what's in there now. 4 out of 4 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Boston Acoustics ROCKS! Written By ScottV, Columbus, Ohio on Friday, August 05, 2011 This sub is amazing! I'm running it on an amp with extra power (500W into 2 ohms) so that I am not killing the amplifier. The amp stays relatively cool and the sub sounds really awesome. I also added the remote sub level control and a remote power switch for the amp. I am very happy with the performance!! I listen to all kinds of music, some with heavy bass some not. It handles it all with ease. Oh, and I built a 1-cubic foot box for it, following Boston's specifications (sealed box). I added rubber feet to the box as well for additional acoustic isolation. SWEET!!!! :-) Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Wow! Written By Doctor, Scottsdale, AZ on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 I got two 10's with a Rockford T1000 amp and all I can say is wow. From rock to rap to classical to pop, these speakers perform with a level far above any other sub I've heard in other people's vehicles. My installer stated he only had the power of the amp halfway up and offered to increase it if I would like but it's not necessary at all! Put it this way, no one believes I have 10's in my car...they swear they are 12's. When I show them, they are instantly believers in Boston Acoustics. I'm not a big stereo guy, but I'm so glad the shop I bought them from recommended them to me. The one thing I told them when I was shopping for a system was that I want subs that sound great with all different types of music (rap, rock, etc.) and have a solid bass tone, not something blaring or obnoxious. Finally, I added to them I want subs that sounds great inside the car, not subs that entertain people in the street. I specifically told them if it doesn't sound good I would have them take it all out. Cost was not a huge factor, but quality was. I also had them make a custom box and amp wall that looks like a factory install. Total cost was about $1K (including Sirius satellite installed---definitely recommend for non-stop music. I never listen to the radio anymore!) and was well worth every penny. It's been 3 years since I had this installed and have yet to find another comparable system that sounds better. Don't hesitate...buy these now! You won't be sorry. Good luck! 1 out of 1 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Great Sub ! Written By homerkang, Atlanta, GA. on Saturday, May 05, 2007 Wow! "Great sub" is all I can say!! I just have one of these in a sealed box in my trunk, and running only about 200 watts RMS to it, and this thing pounds!!! Not only does it pound, but because I've geared my sound system towards SQ (rather than SPL), I get a high, sharp type of pounding that feels like a sonic knife cutting up my eardrums. I'll admit that it's not much in the beginning (if you get it new), but give it about a month or so to break in, and your windshield's rearview mirror will be shaking. I actually have to turn the gain down on my amp for this baby, and set my bass to half of what it was before I got this sub, and I'd still be deaf after listening to it for a while. 2 out of 2 people found this helpful Was this review helpful?
