Our take on the Boston Acoustics G212-44 DVC

Highly efficient bass performance

Boston's mission: build a sub that will deliver loads of bass when connected to a moderately-powered amplifier. Efficient G2 subwoofers accomplish the mission, borrowing many design features from the top-of-the-line G5 Series subs, with the quality construction you expect from a Boston Acoustics speaker.

Advanced materials and construction

SureSet terminals

The G212-44 12" woofer features a thick foam surround that lets its cone move freely, for efficient output and warm-sounding bass. RadialVent cooling improves power handling by using the cone's motion to pump hot air away from the sub's internal structure. And the dual voice coil design gives you several options for wiring up your sub, so you get the most out of your system. The SureSet™ terminals come equipped with two fuses to help protect the voice coils during momentary overdrive, and allow you to change the woofer out quickly in case a fuse is blown.

Works in sealed and ported enclosures

This subwoofer is optimized for use in small, sealed boxes — ideal if you want tight, accurate bass. Like a little more boom? No problem, it's suitable for larger ported boxes as well. Whatever your goal, Boston G2 subs are ready to take on the challenge.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most 2-channel car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation. Most mono amps are stable down to 2 ohms.

Highlights:

  • 12" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils
  • copolymer woofer cone with foam surround
  • RadialVent cooling for increased power handling
  • power range: 75-300 watts RMS (150 per voice coil)
  • frequency response: 20-350 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92.3 dB
  • mounting depth: 7-1/16"
  • sealed box volume: 1.00 cu. ft.
  • ported box volume: 2.00 cu. ft.
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Chassis: The Boston Acoustics G2 series subwoofers are built upon a rigid stamped steel chassis. It features the patented RadialVent cooling technology which directs airflow around the 2-1/2-inch voice coil for increased power handling.

Materials: The G21244 woofer has a co-polymer woofer cone with a raised polypropylene dustcap and a large foam surround. The wrap-around gasket gives you a good seal whether you top-mount or bottom-mount the woofer.

SureSet: The speaker terminals are equipped with two 5-amp ATC fuses for selecting between series or parallel voice-coil operation. When both fuses are used, the woofer is configured for parallel operation, and the woofer's impedance is 2 ohms. When one fuse is used in the center slots, the woofer is configured for series operation, and the woofer's impedance is 8 ohms. There is no need to change the position of the speaker wire in order to switch between parallel and series wiring. The fuses also provide voice coil protection under transient conditions such as accidental momentary overdrive. Use of the standard automotive style fuses allows you to quickly service the woofer in case a fuse is blown during usage. Note: The fuses do not protect against voice-coil failure resulting from long term high power abuse.

Terminals: The woofer has rugged spring post terminals that accept up to 8-gauge bare wire or pin connectors.

Long Excursion: The woofer has a 2-inch peak-to-peak excursion for accurate deep bass output from a small sealed enclosure.

Enclosure Recommendations

Sealed Enclosure: The G21244 woofer is optimized for use in a small sealed enclosure with a 1.0 cu. ft. internal volume.

Ported Enclosure: The woofer can also be used in a 2.0 cu. ft. ported enclosure with a 4" diameter, 13" long port, and tuned to 34Hz.

Excellent SQ, Small Box Size, Low Power Requirements

Written By Baseem, Denton, TX on Monday, September 04, 2006

Excellent woofer which maintains Boston's tight grip on the sound quality sector in the car stereo industry. Very low power requirements, incredibly efficient motor and very small box size requirements. Dropped just fine for a 12. Not overpoweringly loud, but these are SQ woofers. I used one 12" in an '05 Toyota Camry, 1.0 cubic feet (after woofer displacement), sealed. Wonderful results. If you are looking for sound quality, look no further.

What gives?

Written By Mike G, Iowa City, IA on Tuesday, March 06, 2007

I've read some lukewarm reviews of this subwoofer in the past but I went with my gut instinct and bought one anyway knowing that Boston wouldn't put their name on anything that was of low quality. I'm glad I made the decision that I did because this sub is a monster. It sounds clean up and down the frequency spectrum and quite literally took my breath away. I'm feeding it 300 watts of clean RMS power from a mono-block amp and it sounds like a dream. I've been buying car stereo equipment for twenty years and this has to be one of the best bangs for the buck I've ever encountered. Can't afford the G2? Buy a G1 and stick it into a cheapy sealed enclosure. My wife has one in her Jeep and for a "cheapy" that one beats hard. Bottom line: you can't go wrong!

ps - no...I don't work for Boston Acoustics! I like the product that much!

wow

Written By Walt, Chicago,Il on Sunday, February 14, 2010

I bought this sub around x-mas time to go along with an alpine M500 amp.... and let me tell you that it hits hard. I got it giving out 300 RMS and it sounds great... I have a 2006 accord coupe with a factory radio cause honda makes it a pain to change the head unit... When i first bought my car i replaced the door speakers and the rear deck speakers with Boston Acoustics and i loved them... This past x-mas i decided to buy my baby a gift so i bought this sub... BA was my first choice and after much research I settled on the G2... Ive had them in for about 2 months now and they sound incredible... I grew up on rap and rock and even though im 31 i still listento both....along with other kinds of music but those are my staples and the G2 handles both so well... its crisp, clear, deep.. its just wow... it sound great... I only have 1 sub and im not trying to rock the block but when i turn it up it more then does the job... I highly recommend the G2

Awesome Sub

Written By Max, Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, October 03, 2009

I've got this sub in a ported box with about 1.5 cuft of airspace and 400 RMS watts pushing it, and its awesome. I've got the bass boost like halfway up and when I turn the volume up past like 1/4 volume, its almost unbearable. I haven't even pushed this sub yet. I just went and tested it in an empty parking lot, and with the trunk closed and all doors and windows shut, I could hear it from a good 1/4 mile away. Also, I played about 8 songs of the heaviest bass I could find all the way through, and when I turned it down to feel the voice coil, it was barely even warm. I got such a good deal on mine. I think it sounds better than my friends who spent 1000 on his system. Awesome value, I would pay 450 for this sub.

WOW (also)

Written By madsen251, Madison WI on Sunday, August 21, 2011

I tried a couple JL's and the 10" BA G3 and settled on this 12" G2. The first enclosure I built for this was about 1.25 cu ft and my intention was to tune it down from there. It was a little boomy and not as tight as I wanted it so I tuned it to about 1.125 cu ft and it was magical. From low to high it was nothing but smooth and beautiful. From punk to metal to rap to piano music from my Wife or Tori Amos or Sarah McClaughlin there was nothing it couldn't do. It was very smooth and warm. Absolutely pounded with rap and almost blew my guts out with a kickdrum from the Senses Fail Live DVD. I am feeding it just under 250 watts rms from a Rockford P400 and it didn't seem AT ALL to be starving to hit any note. I personally didn't notice any break in period, things were about the same from start to finish. The problem for me came just about a month ago when I built a new enclosure to exactly 1 cu ft like BA recommends. I personally found that the very low smoothness and overall blessed output massively fell off. I had to turn the gain way up and still am not happy with the sound. The sound now is higher, shorter and slightly "dry" for lack of a better word. I am going to once again build a new enclosure to just under 1.25 cu ft. You should follow what the manufacturer says but for me I know what this sub can do in a slightly larger enclosure. I have had this sub for almost a year and still love it!

Fried Voice Coils

Written By Kevin, Jackson, MO on Saturday, December 24, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I built a 1cf box that replaced a jump seat in my extended cab ford ranger. The setup sounded great powered by an Alpine MRP-M500 until I pushed it. I do not believe I was near the rated output of the amp when the fuses blew. I replaced the fuses and knew something else was wrong. With little power going to it the fuses blew again. After pulling the speaker I found the voice coils fried.

Now waiting on a replacemnet from Crutchfield.
Pros:
The sound and tightness
Cons:
The voice coils fried and the fuses did not protect the speaker.

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
