Overview Details Customer Reviews Category Info Accessories Our take on the Boston Acoustics G312-4 by Dominic Devito What's a component sub and why would I want one? A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back. The G3 Series subwoofers from Boston Acoustics incorporate innovative technologies with advanced materials for low-frequency firepower that'll enhance any type of music. The patented RadialVent® cooling system shunts heat away from the voice coil, and the ultra-rigid chassis provides a rugged platform for high-powered bass. The 12" G312-4 subwoofer features a rigid copolymer woofer cone and a large compressed foam surround. Extended cone excursion lets these subs pound out ultra-low notes, while the 2-1/2" voice coil handles 375 watts RMS for bass that hits hard. Boston's unique SureSet fuse configuration protects the voice coil from overload when the music is cranked. This multi-purpose sub works well in all sizes and types of enclosures. You can install this sub with Boston's GTR TunableRadiator for a big boost in bass level without a large enclosure. The gasket allows for standard and inverted mounting so you can get creative with your installation. Features Enclosure Recommendations Features Chassis: The Boston Acoustics G3 series high-performance subwoofers are built upon a rigid chassis. It features the patented RadialVent cooling technology which directs airflow around the 2-1/2-inch 4-layer voice coil for increased power handling. Materials: The G312-4 woofer has a co-polymer woofer cone with a raised dustcap and a large compressed foam surround. The wrap-around gasket gives you a good seal whether you top-mount or bottom-mount the woofer. SureSet: The speaker terminals are equipped with two 7.5-amp ATC fuses providing voice coil protection under transient conditions such as accidental momentary overdrive. Use of the standard automotive style fuses allows you to quickly service the woofer in case a fuse is blown during usage. Note: The fuses do not protect against voice-coil failure resulting from long term high power abuse. Terminals: The woofer has rugged spring post terminals that accept up to 8-gauge bare wire or pin connectors. Long Excursion: The woofer has a 2-3/4 inch peak-to-peak excursion for accurate deep bass output from a small sealed enclosure. GTR Tunable Radiators: The G312-4 is compatible with the Boston Acoustic GTR Tunable Radiator (item number 065GTR12, sold separately). These passive radiators, when mounted in an enclosure with the G3 woofer, can produce increased bass output without added enclosure volume. Enclosure Recommendations Sealed Enclosure: The ideal sealed enclosure for the G312-4 woofer is 1.0 cubic feet. Ported Enclosure: The woofer can also be used in a 2.0 cubic foot ported enclosure with a 4" diameter x 13" long port (tuned to 34 Hz). I have one of these BA's in the trunk of my 2002 530i powered by an old MTX amp (about 300 watts). It's mounted in a single 12" sealed enclosure, firing rearward. The 530i stock system has ZERO bass and this simple setup fills the cabin with warm, beautiful bass. It has made a wonderful car perfect.....the BA sounds beautiful and even with low wattage, I have my head unit cranked way down on the bass, otherwise it is too much. Crutchfield Customer Review The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order. Ordered a pair of these subs, 12" size. Put them in a 1.5 cubic inch sealed box, in the trunk of a 2005 Subaru Legacy. Powered by a 1000.1 Amp running at 2 ohms (750rms total to the subs, a perfect match). As soon as I turned to volume up, I was blown away at the sound quality reproduced by these subs. Songs with tight, quick firing bass sound perfect on these subs, even when turned up loud. And speaking of loud, these do that job perfectly as well. Now that they've broken in, I can punish myself with these subs at higher volumes. The sound has yet to distort whatsoever, and the amp is so efficient my lights don't dim at all without any wiring upgrades. Overall, I would highly recommend these subs to anyone looking for a quality sub with quality sound while also producing high SPL. These won't go out and beat a pair of the best, but will be more than enough volume for anyone that values hearing from their ears later in life. 2 out of 2 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Crutchfield Customer Review The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order. Having owned boston subs before, I kinda knew what to expect. I was not disappointed. This sub truly hits very low and precise. It seems quite fast and musical for a 12 inch. I have only ever had 10 inch Boston's before but decided I would try the 12 when I saw the fantastic sale price deal on Crutchfield. I have this in an overbuilt sealed enclosure being driven with an old school Rockford Fosgate power series amp that I also bought from crutchfield back in 2000. This amp gives my woofer over 400 watts rms. I will say however that you really need to make sure your box is built to spec. If anything, go a bit smaller and then stuff the box. If you go much bigger than the specified 1 cubic ft box the sound gets flabby and boomy and what not. Again this sub is truly what you need for high fidelity bottom end to round out your system. But also remember your audio system is only as good as your weakest link.......So skimp on nothing or else it will be revealed. You will not find a better subwoofer at this price at Crutchfield right now while this G3 is on sale!! 1 out of 2 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No
1 out of 5 Never had a Chance Written By , Oh on Sunday, October 16, 2011 I wanted an Alpine Type R Subwoofer but when I saw a deal and read reviews on the Boston Acoustics G3, I thought I would give this speaker a shot. The speaker arrived dead and I could get no response from it. It had to be returned and could not be replaced so I will never know it's potential. I've got to give it one star for arriving dead and being seemingly poor quality. Was this review helpful? Yes | No
