Our take on the Boston Acoustics GTA-RSL

by Buck Pomerantz
Boston Acoustics

This GTA-RSL remote subwoofer level control from Boston Acoustics eliminates the problem of varying bass levels in your music selections. The dash-mount knob connects to your Boston Acoustics GTA Series amplifiers with its 16-foot cable so you can adjust the sound from the front seat of your car. Not a bass boost, this controller adjusts the level of your Boston amp so you'll get consistent bass tones, no matter what the volume. The remote works with GTA-Series mono amps, as well as GTA full-range amps with the low-pass filter engaged. Warranty: 2 years.

Features

Overview: The GTA-RSL is an optional accessory that allows you to remotely adjust the subwoofer level of a compatible Boston Acoustic GTA-series amplifier. This allows you more control and flexibility from the listening position.

Note: The remote works only for subwoofers, when used with a full range amplifier the low-pass crossover must be engaged.

VCA: The GTA-RSL uses a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) to vary the output level of the subwoofer amp. No audio signal is sent to the controller, therefore, noise cannot be injected into the system from an external source.

Installation: The controller assembly easily mounts under the dash using the included self-tapping screws, within easy reach of the listening position. It can also be flush mounted behind a 5/16" diameter opening.

Compatibility: The GTA-RSL is compatible with the following Boston Acoustics GTA-series amplifiers:

  • GTA-1000M
  • GTA-1005
  • GTA-1105
  • GTA-400M
  • GTA-500M
  • GTA-502
  • GTA-504
  • GTA-602
  • GTA-704
  • GTA-800M
  • GTA-802

I like knobs

Written By Mike R, New York, NY on Thursday, April 19, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fun little gizmo to install in your dashboard. Do you need it? Probably not. Is it easy to install and nice to have? Certainly. I also find it useful to control bass level between songs to reduce rattles on my rear deck (which I am going to sound-treat, but have not yet gotten around to).
Pros:
- Easy wiring - Easy to flush or surface mount - Easier to use than head unit sub control
Cons:
- Difficult to separate from mounting bracket (instructions are a bit incomplete, and it is glued on as well as screwed). - Large footprint near mounting surface required a bit more Dremel-ing of the dash than I would have liked.

Well worth it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little device to have in reach for the extra oomph when wanted. It is easy to install and unlike a previous comment the bracket IS removable. It's held on by one screw and the nut behind the knob. Pull the knob straight off (I had to pry it a bit with a flat head), remove the bolt and the bracket comes off. Then just drill a 5/16" hole where you want to mount it, insert the knob "stem" up (or sideway's in some cases) through the hole and put the washer/nut back on - it's that simple. I mounted mine on the center console in a nook where it's not very visible.
Pros:
Easy to install and allows simple, accurate bass control
Cons:
None

Money well spent

If you buy a GTA series amp, this will be the best 20 bucks you'll spend. Mounted it flush in an empty spot in the dash. Just had to knock out the tab on the dash and it fit right in without drilling. Works perfect for gettin' the sub at just the right level without leaving the drivers seat.
Pros:
Makes fine tuning a snap

RJ11, not RJ45

Written By musicfan145, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, June 16, 2011

Note that the GTA-RSL system uses RJ11 connections, NOT RJ45 as indicated in the Crutchfield description. This is essentially a standard 4-conductor phone wire, not an ethernet type conductor. That's good because it makes it even easier to purchase a different length cable or repair it if need be. It's also nice that the wire carries no audio signal, so you don't have to worry about noise or interference, and you can route it however you need to.

I'm using it with the GTA-400m, and I wish it could be configured to adjust the Q-tune level instead of gain. Also, it's nice that the manual gives instructions for flush mounting, but it would be even nicer if they replaced the non-removable mounting bracket with a removable surface mount box. This would give more flexibility for both mounting options. Then again, its only $20!

Used this with my Boston Acoustics GTA-1005 amp and couldnt be happier. Nothing
like being able to control the bass from up front, whenever you want it. Super
easy to install.
