Boston Acoustics builds their HSi-series for people who love great sound but not the clutter of speakers. Movie dialogue sounds clear and the notes of woodwinds, strings and brass have a natural tone. Boston Acoustics also designs all their in-wall and in-ceiling speakers for simple do-it-yourself installation. The HSi-255 mounts flush in the wall and comes with a magnetic grille that's paintable to blend seamlessly into your home.

An in wall mounting bracket is recommended for installing this speaker in a new home under construction or in a room that's undergoing major renovation. (Brackets sold as a pair.)

Speakers are great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound great and were easy to install. I was not sure what I wanted so these were recommended by your rep via online chat. Could not be happier with the service.

Pros: Great sound at an affordable price

Cons: Not crazy about how they painted. May finish better if you spray paint them but since I was trying to match the walls I had to roll them.

Easy to install and work great.

Pros: Replace older set of Boston Acoustics and the fit was very good.

Good sound for low $$

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are fine. I had them installed in a small room as my front speakers for my surround system. Good quality sound if you're not a total audiophile.

Pros: Inexpensive, "more than adequate" speakers.

Cons: Front grills could fit a bit cleaner and flatter

Look and sound good for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bottom line is, youre getting a Boston Acoustic's in-wall speaker for under $100. Not sure I would be pumping Linkin Park through these things, but for the price, they look nice, and work fine as a surround speaker. Installation was moderately simple. Only problem i had was with the screws. They didnt screw in easy, almost stripped a few of them before i could get them all the way in. And they were very long, so took a while. But overall, worth the price.

Pros: Price

Cons: Screws a bit tough to get in

Installation: After a 8-15/16" x 6" cutout is made (either vertically or horizontally) the speaker is installed into the opening and held in place with the integral plastic bracket. The required depth to install the speaker is 2-1/2" from the mounting surface (this includes the thickness of the drywall). Behind the mounting surface there must be a 1-1/2" clearance on both ends of the speaker (along the short sides). The mounting wall material must be at least 3/8" thick for the mounting bracket to work.

Paintable: Both the frame and grille can be painted to match the ceiling. A plastic paint mask is included to protect the speaker from being painted as well.

Inputs: The speaker clips will accept bare wire up to 14 gauge.

IR Sensor Knockout: The speaker has a knockout molded into the speaker baffle that will accommodate a standard 1/2" diameter infrared (IR) sensor for an optional remote IR remote control system.

Placement: The HSi 255s can be mounted either vertically or horizontally. If mounted horizontally, each speaker should be turned so the tweeters are in the inside. If mounted vertically and the bottom edge is more than 66" above the floor, invert the speaker so the tweeter is below the woofer. The speakers should be mounted at least 12" away from a tube-TV to avoid interference with the picture.

Magnetic Grille: The grille is magnetically mounted for easy installation.

Optional Bracket: The NCB5 new-construction bracket (sold separately) can be used to simplify installation in new construction.
