Our take on the Boston Acoustics MC200Air

by Ralph Graves
Boston Acoustics

Boston Acoustics MC200 Air AirPlay Black

Bring the music on your Apple portable to life with the MC200Air from Boston Acoustics. This Wi-Fi® speaker system is AirPlay-compatible, so streaming from your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch® couldn't be easier. And this slender system really delivers on sound quality, so you can enjoy big sound without making space for a big system.

Sleek design fits in anywhere

The slim contours of the MC200Air make it an ideal system for a nightstand, end table, or kitchen counter. And for rooms where space is really an issue, you can even mount this speaker on your wall using its rear-panel keyhole slots.

Great sound from a small system

The MC200Air features two full-range speakers that deliver rich, detailed sound. Boston Acoustics' patented BassTrac® circuitry continually monitors the signal to prevent distortion and ensure clean, clear bass.

The convenience of Apple AirPlay

You can make a one-to-one connection between the MC200Air and your Apple portable device to enjoy your stored music files, as well as audio from apps such as Pandora® Internet radio, Slacker, and more. Tune into Internet radio stations on your iPhone, for example, and hear them through the M200Air.

Using the iTunes® program on your computer, you can wirelessly stream to multiple MC200Air speakers simultaneously. And you have the added advantage of using your Apple portable as a remote. So you can select songs, individually adjust the volume of each connected MC200Air system, and fill your home with sound — all right from your iPad or iPhone.

Other wired and wireless connection options

Have an Android™ smartphone or tablet? The MC200Air is DLNA-compatible, which means you can stream music wirelessly from your mobile device (DLNA streaming app download may be required). The system also has a stereo minijack auxiliary input to connect other portables to it. And there's a USB port on the back for your Apple portable's charging cable. You can charge your device while connected, and play music through the system — a great option for Apple devices without Wi-Fi, like an iPod classic®. The system also has an Ethernet port so you can make a wired connection to your home network.

Great Speaker for the Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound and value for the price. Configuring the speakers was a bit clumsy, but once done, I was able to get them situated in a couple of rooms and can stream iTunes to both simultaneously using AirPlay. Very attractive speakers, as well.
Pros:
Price, sound, appearance.
Cons:
Configuration.

Nice addition to my new kitchen!

Written By Bill E., NYC on Thursday, August 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit is nicely designed and was easy to set up. The sound is quite good and the controls are very easy to use. I think the unit works best with a good wired or strong wireless connection. I originally paired it with a range extender and it skipped very often . When I then paired it with the weaker, but primary, wireless router it worked fine. It is a nice looking and nice sounding machine.
Pros:
One of the few such units you can get in white Easy set up Nice sounds - good bass
Cons:
Does not have Bluetooth built in

This is one of the best products I own right now. Set up once and ALL your mobile devices set up on your network as the MC200Air can switch and play through these speakers. How cool and awesome is that? Way cooler that cool. And sound will blow you away which is fantastic sound. I love it.
Pros:
Size (not to big), Design, Sound, remote, bag, input options to name a few.
Cons:
none

Great package

Written By JS, California on Wednesday, May 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very impressed with this speaker. I bought it specifically for the Airplay functionality and the fact that it would produce better sound than the typical similarly-sized package. First, the wireless setup was extremely easy and fast. I have not had a single problem with it being able to connect to the wireless router even though I have power cycled it and moved it around the house and outside many times. It is small and portable enough to move with ease. The remote works as advertised. And it is so simple to use an iPod, iPhone, or computer with iTunes to play music.

But I am really impressed with the sound. I have been a musician for decades and I know what live acoustic music (without over-engineering in the recording process) should sound like. Wind instruments, percussion, piano, voice, and strings all sound very good. This speaker reproduces the attacks on fretted stringed instruments with precision. The total sound package is open and natural with some of the separation you would expect on a pair of high quality mains. Keep in mind this is with higher-bitrate MP3 files transmitted over Airplay, there is some quality loss of course but what remains is really good.

In my opinion, this speaker is a good compromise between portability, sound, convenience, and price.
Pros:
Great sound, really easy to use.
Cons:
Haven't had it long enough to find a big one.
