Boston Acoustic's S series speakers let you enjoy clear, natural sound, even with a low-powered system. And with a wide variety of sizes, you'll find a set for most commonly-sized speaker openings.

The Boston S65RC 6-1/2" speaker features a 3/4" tweeter with a built-in cooling system for long term reliability and excellent power handling. A contoured tweeter plane guides high-frequency output to create a larger listening "sweet spot," while Boston's Amplitude Modification Device (AMD™) reduces harshness in the upper mids for clear, detailed sound.

The sturdy woofer cone teams up with a durable butyl rubber surround to produce tight, clean bass with minimal distortion. And you'll hear a smooth blend between the woofer and tweeter, thanks to the built-in crossover.

Note: Boston describes this model as a 6" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-1/2" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-1/2" speaker.

Beter than factory

Written By Curt D, Chaska, MN on Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A lot of "Disappointed's" review rang true for me. These speaks sould clean and clear with some materiel, sometimes the midrange is blarey, and sometimes they just sound muffled. NO 6" speaker will give much bass but these give about the amount I expect from this size. I am giving them a clean 20W from an older outboard Alpine amp. I'm tempted to try giving them more power but I'm not sure how much it would help. The 6.5" Boston Pro's I have in the back with 80W into each help the bass a lot. For the price they are OK.

Pros: Fit fine with Crutchfield supplied brackets in the odd sphaped factory openings in my 2005 Acura RSX.

Cons: Bass is never tight, these speakers have an overly "soft" sound. They don't sort out the details of the music well.

really good for the price

The speakers are well built, since i was leaving the factory radio in place, these speakers are the best bang for the buck withought having to buy an AMP. They sound really good, but lack a little bass.

Best factory replacement speaker for Dodge Ram

Written By Glenn D., San Antonio, TX on Sunday, April 24, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a hard time finding a replacement speaker for the factory model in my Ram
without making major modifications. These were recommended by the
Crutchfield team, and they work great.

I read several comments regarding "breaking in" the speaker, which I had never
heard of before. Every time I've replaced speakers in the past, what I heard
initially was pretty much what I got. These were "different". The base response
at first install was a little lacking compared to the factory models. I gave them a
chance, and was glad I did. As they "broke in" (and yes... they did), my bass
response got stronger and the sound was much better. Now, I'm completely
happy with the sound, and enjoy them much more than the factory originals. I
had blown-up the factory ones with a little too much bass, and they were
bottoming out. These Boston Acoustics produce better sound without bottoming
out like the factory speakers did.

Well worth the money. If you are looking for a factory replacement speaker for a
Dodge Ram, get these. Use them for about a week or so, and I'm sure you will
be smiling like I am.

Sound much better

The three speakers out of four that worked sounded great compared to the
original speakers that were completely shot in my 2001 Beetle. I was very
disappointed to have to take the car apart again to install the replacement 4th
speaker. Customer service was GREAT and the replacement speaker arrived
quickly but I still have to take the interior apart twice.

Great speakers, bad fit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The S65RC's sound great, especially compared to the factory speakers they replaced in my 2003 Acura RSX. Unfortunately, even though they are "Reduced Clearance" and were specifically recommended by a Crutchfield advisor for my car, they simply did not fit with the supplied brackets. It ended up being a big pain, taking about 4 hours to fabricate my own solution.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these in May/2010, a set of BA 6x9s (S95), and the JVC Arsenal to go in my 05 Tacoma.

From the start sound was disappointing from all speakers. Some things sounded good, but others poor. Some frequencies sound good, but others make them sound tingy or vibrate considerably. Very narrow range. My JVC has many sound adjusting features and I've tried every possible combination. I'm no professional when it comes to sound, but these speakers just don't cut it in my opinion. Recently one of these sounds like it may be blown.

For 5 years I dreamed about upgrading my system, now that this has happened I am still disappointed.

Installed in a 2000 Honda Accord EX-L Sedan

Written By Josh, San Antonio, TX on Wednesday, July 28, 2010

These are not a TRUE perfect fit for 6th gen Honda Accord sedans. You will have to modify the plastic factory speaker baffles. This was quite easy however. The speaker terminals get in the way of a plastic lip inside the baffle, all you have to do is saw or cut off this lip and the speaker is able to lay flush with the baffle. Also, the three screw holes are not quite even with each other, but I was able to make them work. Overall, the install went well.

I purchased the Honda speaker harnesses too. These worked wonderful. I just clipped them to the factory speaker harness and didn't have to mess with stripped wires or crimping.

These took some time to break in. They are indeed bass-shy. They have some punch to them but it is what you'd expect for a 6 inch speaker at this price range. The mids and highs are good. In reality, I'd give them 3.75 stars. These just happen to be the only "decent" speakers that are a "drop-in" fit for my car make and model. Looking back, I probably would have opted to do some more modifications to get a better speaker. But I'm not disappointed. These speakers fill my car with good sound. Five times better than the factory paper woofers I had.

I have an Alpine HU connected to an Alpine 445 power pack amp giving these speakers 45w RMS each. Boston underrates their speakers and though they say 35w RMS is their max, I wouldn't be afraid of even putting 50w RMS into them. They can handle it just fine.

Nice and Easy Great sound

I just purchased two sets of these speakers as well as a set of S35's fpr my dash. I have a
2010 Dodge Ram, and kept the factory player. They were very easy to install with the adapters
supplied by Crutchfield, and quite a difference in the sound. I am very pleased.

Sound Great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers because I have had good experience with Boston's in the
past, and these definitely didn't let me down. They sound great! They are being
driven by a JVC KW-XR810 with 22 watts RMS and they are still VERY loud!

I agree that they are Bass-shy, but here's why that doesn't bother me. The bass
they do produce is flawless, and my doors can't handle more bass without
rattling. I'll be adding a sub to my system soon to fill out the sound, but
honestly, these do a pretty good job for 6.5" shallow mount speakers!

These fill out the high end very well too.

Not a huge step up from some budget speakers

Written By Taffy, Omaha, NE on Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put a pair of these in the rear deck of a 1997 Chevy Cavalier, running off a 17x4 RMS Sony receiver. I had tried several so-called budget models, then tried these Bostons thinking I'd get a large uptick in sound quality. They DO sound nice in the upper ranges - very smooth and clear. But ultimately, their sound wasn't much better then some of the less expensive models I tried. After about a week of usage, the speakers broke in and the lower end did become more pronounced, but not nearly to the extent that the Kenwood's and Sony's I tried did. Another reviewer called them 'bass-shy' and I would certainly agree with that. These speakers ARE built very well: nice and heavy with quality rubber surrounds. I suspect in a less noisy vehicle than mine and with good power and a subwoofer, they would really shine. But for me, I felt I could do better with a slightly cheaper pair.

Little powerhouse

Written By Luke, york, PA on Friday, February 06, 2009

I was very pleased with the crisp highs and mids with these speakers.
Installation was cake, and very straight forward. The bass was lacking a
little, but what do you expect for a 6 inch speaker. But after running them
for about 2 weeks, they start to sound much better once they are broken in
a little. Once again boston acoustics pleased me. great product!

bought for a 1995 Subaru Impreza Outback. The "outfit my car" section said these would work. They "fit", but I had to drill 2 holes in the speaker plate to properly screw to the stock mounting plate - they were about 1/2" off the mark. (If looking at the speaker like a clock, the holes had to be drilled beneath the ones at about the 10 and 2 positions.)

other than than that small detail, they work and sound great. I would definitely recommend them.

Nice sounding speakers, but choose something else if you're installing them in '98 Tahoe doors. The adapter bracket that Crutchfield sents with them won't work for your door. Get 6.75" speakers, they'll fit perfectly without any adapter brackets.

Great stock replacement with one quirk

Written By Lori, Howell, NJ on Saturday, July 21, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 97 Civic LX and I was looking to replace the stock head unit and speakers and decided on these.

I am a bit of an audio nut, so when I saw reviews suggesting a "natural" sound, I knew these would be a good replacement and I was not disappointed. These speakers deliver fantastic, clear sound. The highs are a bit bright and required me to turn down the treble sightly on the new CDE-9881 I also purchased, but the highs are not sibilant, piercing, or overbearing, they were just a little over-strident and needed to be toned down. I listen to a variety of music and was impressed that even classical music sounds great on these speakers, a testament to their well-balanced sound.

Bottom line, I did not expect this kind of sound to come out of my 97 Civic, which is an inherently noisy, resonant vehicle. Really, the vehicle itself hinders the sound more than the speakers. Punchy, balanced, well-engineered speakers.

A note on the bass: as mentioned by other reviewers, these are definitely bass-shy speakers. They actually take some time to break in, and the bass after only a couple weeks of driving around is already MUCH more present and actually sounds quite good. But if I did not have the S95 6X9's in the rear, I probably would be lacking bass, to be honest.

-- These speakers are NOT a drop-in fit for my 97 Civic. The holes that are drilled stock do not fit the 12-4-8:00 stock positioning of the screws. I was forced to drill new ones since the alternate holes are improperly placed. Other than this, though, the size is perfect and fits perfectly in the stock speaker cups.

2000 Honda Accord EX coupe (front doors)

Written By MrChad, Chicagoland, IL on Wednesday, May 02, 2007

Purchased these to replace the OE doors speakers. I have them paired to a Kenwood KDC-MP628 head unit 22w x4 RMS and Pioneer TS-A6960R 3-way 6x9s 40w RMS in the rear (one of the few 6x9s to clear the coupes tight trunk springs under the deck lid at around 2 7/8" top mount).

I waited a good while for someone to make a speaker to direct fit the shallow doors of this car without hacking out the back of the protective door pocket bracket. The window is right behind the speaker pocket when down.

The Boston Acoustics S65rc do not disappoint, they are the absolute deepest speaker that will fit the OE door pockets. I did have to trim a few spots inside the OE pocket with a Dremel tool to clear the terminal connectors and a raised section on the top rear of the speaker basket itself. They also do not line up with the OE speakers 3-screw holes. However, the Honda bracket had holes for a 4 bolt mounting style as well, and the S65rc fit perfectly in this orientation. No drilling needed, just an extra 4th screw. Id rate them an 8.5 of 10 on fitment, because of these niggles.

The best part is the raised front rim on the speaker basket that fits perfectly with the rubber seal on the Accord door panels just like the OE speakers. These truly are Honda fitment aftermarket speakers.

Paired with my rear Pioneer 6x9s and Kenwood head unit I have have no wantings for anymore bass. These speakers really did fill out the sound on the inside, great rich sound.

This current setup is deeper, louder, and more full sound then the stock setup ever was. I'd rate the S65rc an ideal OE Honda fitment/replacement speaker.

Far better than Honda OEM speakers in Insight

Written By Peter, Ohio on Friday, March 23, 2007

I put a pair of the Boston Acoustics S65RC speakers in both the doors and behind the seats in a 2000 Honda Insight. A huge improvement over the Honda OEM speakers and far better than the Pioneer TS-G670M speakers that a previous owner had installed.

For those putting these in a Honda Insight, the mounting holes aren't a perfect match so you'll need to drill two holes in the mounting flange of each speakers. Besides that the provided connector works with the Honda speaker wiring.

The S65RC speakers aren't the speakers for you if you want to vibrate panels on your car. With a factor head unit in the car, they are great are choice. Just don't expect all the bass in the world. They are just 6" woofers.

Excellent OEM replacement

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2006 Honda S2000 for use with the factory head unit. With sharp, clear sound and sufficient bass, this is a nice upgrade over the originals. Boston Acoustics advertises the S65RC as a direct fit for Honda vehciles. It fit fine in the original speaker bracket (no hole cutting) but did require a small bit of plastic be removed for clearance of the speaker wire connections. Overall these were easy to install.

Clean and Lively

Written By Mike Albq., Albq., NM on Thursday, November 23, 2006

I mounted these and the BA 6X9s in an '05 Altima along with an 18w Blaupunkt - a huge improvement over the factory stuff. This system is plenty punchy. The improved midrange and top end never become fatiguing, and they play loudly. I try to allow for tastes, but I'm not sure why others are complaining about the bass quantity (unless perhaps they're wired out of phase). No, they don't much reach into the bottom 2 octaves, but at this price, who would want them to? I'll take clean, reasonably deep bass over muddy and thumpy every time.
These do deliver, are a terrific value, and easily worthy of 4 stars.

aweful for the money

Written By Boris, Edison, NJ on Thursday, April 06, 2006

I hooked these up to a Blaupunkt San Jose, i think its 22 by 4 rms output. They sound aweful. Yea, the highs arent bad and the mids are ok, but for the money, not only should those be better but they should have some bass. Even yif your getting a sub, you want good transition between your bass and mids. these speakers are terrible. my stocks sound better.

Not worth it unless you have a sub

Written By Damon, South Charleston, OH on Sunday, January 22, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers would be fine if you have a sub, but if you don't and you like bass, don't consider these. I had a pair of these in the rear deck of my car and I couldn't stand the complete lack of bass from these speakers. I replaced them with a pair of $50 Pioneer 2-ways and the results are a lot better. I realize that the Bostons are better quality speakers, but the lack of low end response in these speakers is a deal-killer unless you have another source for bass in your vehicle.

Great-sounding, efficient speakers

Written By gh1138, Mt. Juliet, TN on Thursday, January 19, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mated these with a Pioneer DEH-P80MP HU. It puts out 27 watts RMS which is a perfect fit for the 2-35 watt RMS rating of these speakers.

They sound great for this size speaker. I mounted them in the rear doors of an Extended Cab Titan. It's a shame the front seats block out a lot of their great sound, but they provide excellent filler for the Boston Acoustic 6x9s I put in the front doors.

I was disappointed that I wasn't advised I'd have to drill the sheet metal in my doors to install these speakers. Maybe that's to be expected when installing speakers, but in previous Crutchfield purchases, I'd always been warned if it wasn't a drop-in fit. Even called tech support to see if there should have been a mounting bracket, but there's not.

The stock speakers were an odd-size (6.75?) with an oversize plastic housing integrated and permanently attached to the factory speaker. The door cutout was for what looked like a 4x6, and because of the size of the cutout, the speakers could only be secured at approximately ten o'clock, 1 o'clock, and 3 o'clock. Still, the friend installing them got them in there tightly, so they shouldn't be going anywhere.

I'm giving a "4" rating in this case because of the relative difficuly installing with no warning. The sound of the speakers themselves are much better than the factory speakers.

High price, clear mids and highs, lacking bass

Written By Snailster, Maui, HI on Saturday, October 08, 2005

Bought the speakers for my 1996 Subaru Legacy. Using them with Pioneer DEH-P4600 head unit, output 22W x 4 RMS. Just the deck itself was a huge improvement over the stock unit and I waited for a while before replacing the speakers. The Crutchfield guy on the phone recommended and I bought the Boston Acoustics S65RC from the "Scratch & Dent" section for $100, they were immaculate.

There has been some improvement over the stock speakers, the mids and highs are clearer and they can handle a bit more power. The bass is lacking, though, quite significantly, my main issue with the speakers. Noticeable bass distortion when playing really loud. Which corresponds to the specifications - the frequency response is 58-20kHz and the speakers handle 2-35W, whereas for example Polk Audio db650, similar speakers for $99 have frequency response 40-22kHz and handle 6-60W. So at least on paper the Polk looks better. Similar for even cheaper Kicker 05KS60. Alternatively, the Boston Acoustics could be used with a powered subwoofer, that would eliminate the need for more bass. My Pioneer deck does not have sub outputs, though.

So if I were to do it again, I would try the Polk or Kicker speakers. Still no major regrets, the sound is decent.

I installed these in my 2001 Honda S2000. It was an easy swap. The holes actually lined up, contrary to what the info sheets say. They sound great even with the very low power stock head unit. I tried the 6.5" Kickers but they demand more power and didn't sound right.I'll be back for more...stay tuned.

Great Pair of Speakers

Written By Kevin, Gresham, OR on Friday, July 08, 2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers for the front doors of my 98 Subaru Impreza because of the fact that Boston Acoustics is known to make good speakers and also that these speakers were said to have good highs and decent lows. Thats what i wanted for my front speaker, really crisp highs, and i didnt need good bass up front, so i got these.

Currently i am just running them off a 200 watt Kenwood deck and they sound amazing! The sound is so clear and crisp! These are great speakers for the price and a great alternative to a component system.

The only downside was the time it took to install. They wouldnt fit when i tried to put my door panel on so i had to do some modifying which added some time. Other than that though these are great speakers.
