The Horizon Solo AM/FM radio from Boston Acoustics makes a great bedside companion. Its digital display can be oriented horizontally or vertically, so you can either set the radio upright or on its side. The large outer ring surrounding the display is also a touch-sensitive snooze bar, so it's easy to find even when you're still half asleep. And the display adjusts to the ambient light in the room, so you don't have numbers glowing at you all night.

The radio's high-performance full-range speaker delivers clean, full sound, while a built-in audio processor ensures plenty of rich, warm bass. And you can even enjoy music from your MP3 player or other audio source through the Solo's auxiliary input.

Fantastic Reception & Sound

Written By Anonymous, Lancaster, PA on Monday, January 25, 2010

My father gave this Boston Acoustics clock radio to my mother for Christmas. I had a
chance to give the radio a good, hard look. I was so impressed with its build quality,
intuitive functional design, and reception that I ordered one for myself the next day!

The radio reception is so good that I have used all of the 20 station presets. A nice
feature is that the radio presets can be split up between AM & FM however you desire.
All presets can be FM stations, if you desired. Speaker qualilty is far superior to other
radios of its size with a significant amount of bass.

I do not hesitate to recommend this clock radio to others. This radio is not cheap, but it
is worth the money. I am actually contemplating buying another one for the garage.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 25 years of loyal service my old clock radio finally died. I looked high and low for a replacement and finally stumbled onto this radio. I am very particular in what I want and need and was delighted to find this item. I wanted a clock radio that had dual alarms, good sound, but most importantly, had good radio reception. I live in the suburbs of NYC and go to sleep and wake up to the news on AM radio. Very few radios have the ablilty to receive the stations I listen to clearly. This radio is not only as good as my old radio was, it is far better.

The features on this radio are an added bonus. It does everything my old radio did, and much more. I really like this radio.

The only drawback that I can find is that for a bedside clock radio, it is a bit pricey. That said, when I consider the fact that it is so packed with the features that I want, works so well and effortlessly receives the stations that I want, I think it's a bargain.

I would recommend it to anyone, and yes, I would buy it again.

Looks great, sounds good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I don't know why I expected this or any radio to work well. I get poor radio reception.
I purchased this because I had about a hundred bucks in CF credit, and decided to use it for something that I would not ordinarily buy, a single speaker clock radio with with Boston Acoustic brand name.
Its well made, solid and goes perfectly with the decor of guest bathroom, exact color match, Slate Grey.
Put it in wall corner as recommended to produce base from back.
The few FM stations we get sound great, too bad can't improve a.m as I listen mostly to news and talk radio.

Crutchfield shipped same day.

Closest to Perfect Clock Radio Available

Written By TWW, Roanoke, VA on Sunday, March 22, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the Solo clock radio about a month. It is nearly perfect. Despite one or two flaws (I am picky) it remains the only clock radio I would buy again.

Details that make this unit great include a footprint suitable for a bedside table; progressively increasing tone alarm; option to wake to radio, tone, or both; better mono sound than most stereo clock radios; screen brightness that is user-selectable AND based on lighting conditions; vertical or horizontal positioning; looks and feels solid.

I like the simple 3 control knobs, but initially I found the mode control would react a bit quickly and I would be uncertain what I just did. However I became comfortable with it. You can easily manage the alarms by pressing dedicated buttons.

The touch-sensitive snooze bar seems like a good idea, but on a few rare occasions it "jumped" from the initial 10 minute snooze to the maximum 60 minutes. Each "touch" is supposed to increase by 5 minutes. I was either unknowingly touching the bar too much, toughing somehow that the bar was over-sensitive to---possibly at the "feet" which protrude the bar on two sides, or my specific unit was flawed. Crutchfield replaced the unit with no hassles. I suspect the new unit and/or being conscious of this issue will avoid future over-snoozing. It would be nice if the maximum snooze time was user-selectable, but it is not.

Tivoli Audio makes a similar product but I like the overall appeal and price of the Solo much better.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a radio with a small footprint, good sound, and sensitive reception. I live in a fringe area for reception, and had returned a cheaper radio, as it simply couldn't pull the signal. I decided to check this model out, as it seemed to fit my needs, and I found the price attractive. Upon installation, I found that this radio exceeded my expectations in all areas. I will probably order another one as a gift for my sister.

Great choice

I am extremely pleased with this clock radio. The sound quality is outstanding, it's easy to use and very high quality. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Sounds great, bright screen

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this a few weeks ago as a clock radio/alarm for the bedroom and was impressed by the sound quality. I read the specs before ordering but it was bigger, as in depth length, and heavier than I expected but it feels solidly built. The reception is great and in my town that's a big plus. I have yet to hear the alarm because I keep waking up before it so I turn it off. The screen, however, is a little too bright. Like the Bose Wave Radio, the Solo is suppose to change intensity based on the current light situation but it's still very bright at night and much brighter than my old Wave radio. Maybe I missed something in the instructions. Other than that, good product and the price was worth it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product! One problem . . . in the vertical orientation the radio is very tall and leans back at an angle that makes it very difficult to see the dial info while lying down. Otherwise, it is the best clock radio on the market.

Great product. The reception level is better than my home stereo (hi dollar). The audio quality is better than I expected, and the menu functions are the easiest I have ever used. Great quality. Thanks, Crutchfield.

Seductive Engineering

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! Replaces an aging radio/alarm on our breakfast table. Sound quality at least as good as our Bose radio/alarm, with stronger FM reception. Easily locks in the KANU signal sixty miles away in Lawrence, KS. Really seductive engineering with velvet detents on all the knobs, highly efficient menu system, most readable display I've ever seen (day or night), all rounded corners and edges, and a 'grippy', non-skid outer cabinet. Fits the limited space on our breadfast table with ease. Using the AUX input for a Walkman CD. All-round great looks and performance for the price.

perfect for the office!!!

The Little "b" That Does

Written By John, Natrona Heights, PA on Wednesday, April 23, 2008

I've always had a soft spot for Boston Acoustics. This Solo is the most accurate table radio I have ever heard. Powering this unit up, even FM hiss sounded sweet. Tuning in, confirmed. Oh my, simply wonderful. Get one!

Product Research

Tuner: The Boston Acoustics Horizon Solo radio has a highly sensitive AM/FM tuner. It can pull in weak FM stations while its high selectivity allows it to separate closely-spaced stations clearly. The tuning knob makes it easy to manually tune to your favorite stations.

Dual Orientation: The Horizon Solo's control panel can be rotated 90° to allow for horizontal or vertical orientation.

Presets: The Horizon Solo radio features 20 station presets for your favorite AM and FM stations. Once you set the preset stations, you can quickly tune only the preset stations with a turn of the tuning knob.

Manual/Seek Tuning: The tuning knob can be turned in either direction for manually tuning up or down the selected band. When the knob is pressed, the Horizon solo will seek up the radio band for the next receivable station.

Antenna Inputs: This unit is equipped with a built-in AM antenna and an attached 5' FM wire antenna. You can unplug either antenna if you wish to connect an optional external antenna to the AM spring-clip antenna input or the threaded FM coax antenna input.

Speaker/Amplifier: The Horizon Solo features a full-range 3-1/2" driver, specifically designed for this radio, with a rear-firing port to enhance the bass output. This high-performance speaker is coupled with an actively-equalized amplifier that uses Boston BassTrac circuitry for full, satisfying sound, even at low volume. The result is a unit that delivers smooth, natural response and room-filling sound despite its small size.

Display: The unit's large easy-to-read, high-contrast LCD display clearly shows the station, clock, and alarm/sleep status. The display automatically adjusts to ambient light. You can also set the overall range of the display brightness from 0 to 20. Display dimensions: 2-1/4" wide, 1-1/8" high.

Auxiliary Input: The Horizon Solo features a rear panel, 3.5mm minijack input for connecting an external audio source to the unit such as your portable MP3 or CD player via an optional 3.5mm stereo minijack cable.

Dual Alarms: The radio features two independent wake-up alarms which can be set to music, tone, or both. When set to music or tone, the alarm tone or radio station starts playing quietly at first, then with increasing volume. When the alarm is set to both music or tone, the tuned radio station plays quietly with a gradually increasing volume. After 5 minutes, the music stops playing and the alarm tone begins to sound at a gradually increasing volume.

Snooze Feature: If you want to sleep a while longer after the alarm sounds, you can use the Snooze feature. The Snooze is activated by simply touching the metal rim around the front of the radio. The snooze function will silence the alarm for 10 minutes. Each additional touch adds another 5 minutes to the snooze time, up to a maximum of 60 minutes.

Sleep Timer: You can set the unit's sleep timer to play the radio for a preset amount of time, then shut itself off. The sleep timer can be set for up to 90 minutes in 5-minute increments.

Audio Controls: You can independently adjust the bass and treble between -5 and 5.

Headphone Output: For private listening, you can plug headphones into the front panel's 3.5mm minijack headphone output. The main speaker mutes when headphones are plugged in.

Memory Backup: The Horizon Solo is equipped with a Super Capacitor to preserve radio presets, clock and alarm settings in the event of a power interruption for a period of 24-48 hours.

Security Connection: A connection point for a security cable is provided on the rear of the radio, next to the AM antenna jacks. This is the same type of connection point as found on many laptop computers, allowing you to connect a computer security cable between a solid anchor point and the Solo radio to help prevent theft.

Boston P.O.P.: The Boston Personal Option Plan (P.O.P.) allows you to match your environment with optional grilles in multiple colors for the Horizon series speakers. In addition to the white grilles that come with the speakers, you can purchase grilles in Glacier, Chocolat, Rose Bud, Chili Pepper, Onyx, Caramel, Pearl Gray, Moss, or Olive. These optional grilles are available directly from the manufacturer.
