Our take on the Boston Acoustics SR80

Boston Acoustics SR Series speakers bring exceptional sound quality to your car. These speakers handle high power with ease, and deliver amazing detail that you've probably never heard before, even with your favorite tracks.

Boston Acoustics SR Series speakers bring exceptional sound quality to your car. These speakers handle high power with ease, and deliver amazing detail that you've probably never heard before, even with your favorite tracks.

The SR80 5"x7" plate speaker features a strong 5" round copolymer woofer that delivers the bass beat with ease. A heatsink cooling system ensures the motor assembly won't overheat, no matter how long or hard you push it. The soft dome tweeter is mounted in a contoured asymmetrical baffle right next to the woofer on the plate, dispersing high notes in an especially wide pattern. Everyone hears natural-sounding music, no matter where they're sitting.

The built-in crossover makes sure the tweeter and woofer perform together for a smooth response that leaves nothing out. A small but powerful neodymium magnet keeps the mounting depth shallow so you can fit your SR speaker in lots of different vehicles. Grilles are not included — factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

One of the better speakers I've owned. The higher the volume the better the sound. Such a great sound motivated me to reduce sound in the cab of my Bronco....sounds even better now.

I purchased to enhance my system I just put in my classic car. I ran rear speakers and SW off of my Alpine Amp & ran these off of the rear stereo outputs (22RMS). Complements the system very nice and sound curve is very complete. Highly recommend, I had to be creative with my mounting.

Pros: nice mid range

Cons: not a standard mounting pattern

Upgrade from the stock speakers, but not enough of an upgrade to justify paying this much for 4 speakers.

Pros: Sounds better.

Cons: Sounds a little better, not a lot better.

I put two pairs of these in my 2006 Mercury Montrery mini van. They fit in perfect. WOW what a difference. These sound GREAT super clear highs, and the lows are great. They really crank with the factory head unit, Trust me... you will not be unhappy with these.

Pros: excellent sound in one plate speaker

Cons: little costly

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these speakers in the front doors of my 2010 F-150 because I wanted some really clear highs to complement my subwoofers in the back. I moved my Pioneer 3 way speakers to the back doors. Man, what a difference! These speakers scream! They are perfect for my system and they can really handle the volume being turned up. The Kortec tweeter sounds great and I love having the crossover right on the back of the speaker. I have always heard that Boston Accoustics makes a great speaker and now I know it is true.

Features

Overview: The Boston Acoustics SR80 speakers are 5x7 component plate speakers. They include a 5" round woofer and a 1" tweeter mounted side-by-side on a 5 x 7 oval plate. This design gives you the excellent imaging and performance of separate component speakers with the "drop-in" convenience of oval coaxial speakers.

Tweeter: Each speaker has a type-S1 1" Kortec soft-dome tweeter for a smooth high frequency response and linearity. Kortec is a specially engineered material with the rigidity of a composite dome and the smoothness and detailed response of cloth. The contoured SR tweeter plane delivers superior on- and off-axis tweeter response compared to traditional coaxial designs.

Woofer: The SR80s are equipped with copolymer woofers with butyl rubber surrounds. Each woofer is equipped with a neodymium magnet, which has a high power-to-weight ratio and a compact size about one-tenth the size of traditional iron-ferrite magnets. The dual-stage aluminum heat sink is integrated into the motor structure to draw heat away from the voice coil increasing the power handling capability.

Crossover: Located behind the tweeter, the multi-element 2-way crossover delivers component level performance.
