Install Boston SX component speakers and experience a new level of realism and clarity in your music — an excellent way to add new life to the sound of your car audio system. The XS60 component speaker package includes two copolymer 6-1/2"/6-3/4" woofers, two Type-S2 tweeters, two external crossover modules, woofer adapter rings, and tweeter mounting hardware.

Boston Acoustic tunes the outboard crossover to ensure a superb blend between woofer and tweeter for smooth, precise output. The tweeter output level is adjustable. Protection circuitry guards against accidental damage to the tweeter.

A compact, lightweight neodymium magnet reduces the woofer's size so it can fit in more vehicles — with no sacrifice in performance. The included mounting hardware allows you to surface- or flush-mount the compact tweeter, while adapter rings let you install the woofer in either a 6-1/2" or 6-3/4" factory opening.

Product Highlights:

  • component speaker system includes woofers, tweeters, and crossovers
  • 6-1/2" copolymer woofer with rubber surround
  • 3/4" Type-S2 Kortec dome tweeter with multiple mounting options
  • external crossover with tweeter output options (0, -2, -4 dB)
  • power range: 2-65 watts RMS (200 watts peak power)
  • frequency response 55-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 90 dB
  • mounting rings included for 6-3/4" applications
  • top-mount depth: 2-5/16"
  • warranty: 2 years

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

decent speakers

Written by: george from modesto cal on November 26, 2011

great sq for anyone that doesn't have real heavy bass but if you do or you listen to rock no matter how much power you put to them they wont make good midrange.

Pros: Sound reproduction at lower volume levels is awesome. I have them in custom kik panels that are tightly sealed so the midbass response is great from low volume to hi volume. Highs are also very accurate. Midrange is also very accurate at low volume. Sq is great.

Cons: Midrange is way low for this speaker. Guitar tracks fade at high volume. I have these on a fosgate p800.4 runing at 100rms. that is the only problem with these. Midrange goes away at high volume.

Sound decent, not good for the price

Written by: aliasjerk from Ann Arbor, MI on December 19, 2009

I write this review exactly a year after getting these speakers, my setup is an amplifier running 50 watts RMS to each speaker. About 9 months after getting them one of the speakers was blown, and I do not push my stereo system by any means, sound quality wise they do a great job of projecting the sounds in music that you don't regularly hear, but that being said mid frequency audio is lacking, and low frequency was disapointing, they couldn't handle much when it comes to producing a good low bass note, I had to rely on a subwoofer for that. \

Don't get me wrong, they sound extremely good as an aftermarket component speaker setup, but are they worth the price? Absolutely not.

If you are looking to spend this much on speakers, go Alpine, Infinity, or JL.

One day in 2008, I spent hours listening to a huge speaker demo wall, trying to find the best set of speakers regardless of price. I've owned countless car audio systems and was tired of being disappointed by new speaker purchases. After over an hour had gone by, I still wasn't satisfied. Somehow I'd neglected to demo the Boston Acoustics equipment. As soon as I heard the SX60's, I shouted, "I want these!"

Boston's next model up, the SL60's, also sound great. However, I actually preferred the "lesser" SX60's.

I paired the SX60's with a Rockford Fosgate P400-4 birthed at 75W RMS per channel. They handle the extra power with ease.

Output with this setup is phenomenal--the car absolutely sings. For the first time in years, I had to make a serious conscious effort to keep the volume turned down to a safe level. The speakers' brilliant sonic reproduction made it feel like I was sitting in front row at a concert, or right there next to the artist (depending on the type of recording). This setup was near perfect.

I've since purchased a new car with a "premium" system and can't wait to buy another set of Boston Acoustics components to throw in there...

Great Boston Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put BA SX60's in the front doors of my '06 Toy Tundra Double Cab. Still using factory head unit although increasingly motivated to update due to proliferation of ipods and iphones at our house. They installed easily - first one took 3 hours and second one took about 45 minutes.

The tweeter is same size as old one - just used some 3M heavy duty foam tape and it appears to be holding - even in 105+ degree temps. The woofers were much easier once I discarded the adapters and other paraphenalia that came with the order. Ended up using original speaker plastic bracket - hacked out the insides with a set of pliers, cleaned up with dremel. Mounted speaker on bracket using metal ring underneath the plastic collar using provided screws and screw clips. Turned out very solid and pleasing with no issue on depth or need to mod the window guide right behind the speaker. Crossover mounted right next to the woofer - only place with space behind the plastic door. Also used some noise-dampening material. Thought originally might be waste of time but there is no rattling going on with the door. Came with 10 sheets 12 x 12. Used 5 per door - 1 on plastic, 1 inside ext sheet metal and 3 on mounting metal. Only need to cover 25% to remove resonances you hear.

Long story - truck much quieter, amazing clear boston sound equally at home with Coldplay, Peter Gabriel or U2. Only remaining issue is now I can hear the back doors rattling with those stock speakers. Never heard before :)

I really had some high hopes for this set of speakers because it was from boston acoustics. But it just sounds real bad,The tweeters are to bright and like another person said the mids are none existent. I'm am pushing 75 watts to each side from a alpine pdx- 5 amp.

Didn't Really Want These

Written by: Patrick from Bakersfield, CA on July 23, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for 2 pairs of speakers to put in my 2008 Dodge Caliber: 6.5 components for the front with matching 6x9s for the back. My first search on resulted in these and the SX95's. The reviews for the SX95s weren't very good so I decided against them. I looked around and ended up torn between a couple of other things that Crutchfield said "didn't fit" my car. Depth didn't seem to be an issue so I finally gave up and called. So glad I did! All my questions were answered, my preferences were listened to, and these were recommended. So I tried them.

These things are just what I wanted sound-wise. Clear, transparent, detailed sound - at this price! Boston did skimp on the hardware: no grilles, tweeter mounts are a joke (the "flush mount" should really be called a "slightly recessed" mount). Better to skimp on that stuff than SQ, I suppose, because now I don't mind catching red lights all the time! Just that much longer I get to listen to these great speakers!

FYI my system: HU Pioneer DEH7000BT, amps Profile AP1040 4ch and AP700M mono, sub Polk db1212, the Bostons, all from Crutchfield and it rocks! Especially for semi low-budget! As a do-it-yourselfer, I wouldn't - and don't - shop anywhere else!

Not Happy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first listen, I hated these speakers. At second listen, I still hated them.

I really wish I had bought something else. They are EXACTLY the same dimensions, magnet size, etc as my factory dodge garbage speakers, and the similarity is in the sound as well. They sound like glorifed stock speakers, and they DEFINETELY don't like the 60 watts rms that they're supposed to take that I'm giving them. I should have paid attention to all the reviews about how great they sound hooked up to other people's head units that are only putting out 15*4.

There's zero midrange or bass, and the tweeters just sound distorted and bad, albeit very bright. The 6.5 inch rounds I put in the rear are just as terrible.

By they way I don't listen to rap or hip hop, these speakers just sound this bad with anything.

Very Happy in Sequoia Front Doors

2001 Toyota Sequoia
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put BA SX60's in the front doors of my '01 Toy Sequoia. No amplification, just the solid clean true 22W RMS from a Kenwood DNX-6140 DVD/NAV head unit. The SX60's install easy in the front doors. The new BA tweeter is exactly the same size as the factory tweeter so I removed the old tweeter and epoxied the new BA tweeter to the factory bracket. Done.
For my Sequoia woofers installed easy. Didn't use Crutchfield-supplied speaker adapters cause they don't fit door or speaker (these SX60s are a non-standard diameter). I reused Toyota speaker mounts by cutting out the factory woofer & pulling the original speaker connector. Since the SX60s are not a standard size I had to saw about 3/16" off each metal mount tab on the new woofers making them fit into the factory mount. It's a perfect. Didn't bother with the included Crutchfiled wire harness speaker adapters because these are component speakers with connectors in the cross-overs. Speaker wire adapters would be great for coaxials like the rear doors. Also, I didn't fall for the foam speaker baffle pitch as factory mounts are enclosed and due to mixed reviews.
I installed the BA cross-overs on the interior-side of the door panel right above and slightly aft of the re-used factory woofer mount because there is lots of space between the interior panel and door. I set my tweeters to -2db attenuation. These SX60's coupled with a set of SX65's in the back doors and a JL Audio Stealthbox subwoofer sound great - it's a whole new car.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unbelievable speakers.

I've installed SX60 in both front and rear doors on my 2007 Toyota RAV4 V6 Sport (no JBL). Not sure why Crutchfield says they the rear doors, but no the front doors on 2007 Toyota RAV4 V6 Sport (no JBL).

The openings in both front and rear doors on my Toyota are the same. The woofers fit like a glove with the included 165mm rings.

Amazing sound, even with the factory radio. Can't wait to hear them with the Eclipse HU I just ordered.

2007 Nissan Frontier
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the rather basic factory front speakers in my 2007 Nissan Frontier with these and couldn't be happier. I had received a replacement head unit--the Kenwood DPX503--for my birthday, and once I could actually listen to my iPhone/iPod without using one of those horrible FM transmitters, I realized the speakers needed to be replaced too. I like a clear, clean sound (I listen to everything from classical to rock). These speakers give me that--I can now hear all the bits and pieces, without that muddy feeling. The only problems were finding a convenient place to stash the crossovers where I could get at them later (they ended up attached with two-sided velcro tape behind the lower console) and fabricating something to mount the tweeters into so they'd go into the spots Nissan so conveniently puts in the dash for their higher-end audio packages (which I did not have). Anyway, these sound great, using the Kenwood head unit without an amp!

I had occasion to call Crutchfield with a couple of dumb questions when we were doing the install--on a Sunday morning! They answered everything right away. Also, when I was debating which speakers to get, I had a very nice chat (electronic) with an advisor who actually paid attention to what I was looking for and made excellent recommendations. It's SOOOOO good to experience real, honest-to-goodness customer service and support from a vendor! I'd recommend Crutchfield to anyone based on my experiences!

Great sound. Hooked them up with my 12" kicker solo's in the rear and this car never sounded with such a crisp clarity. Of course I had to add some bass blockers, but the difference to my originals is unbeatable.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to put in a 2008 Altima. I am pushing them with an eclipse
85x2 amp. I had been using alpine type R's before these in my previous
vehicle using the same amp. The first week I had them I was ready to
return them. Highs were extremely sharp. Set the tweeters to -4db! After
a few weeks they sound very good. I'm not sure if there is just a break in
period or what. But I am impressed with the sound. I don't think I would
go back to the Alpines if they would fit in my new car.

Great Sound

Written by: MARCO from Maryland on December 31, 2007

It was time to change my stock Dodge Magnum speakers and received 2 pairs of Boston Acoustics SX60's for Christmas. I am using a Kicker ZX.5 5-Channel Amplifier to power these two sets of speakers. I have to say that they are crisp and clear! Everything just sounds better. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for some serious sound. I paired these up with a Kicker Solar Baric L5. The sound is amazing. I would say that the tweeter was a bit akward in terms of mounting it, but nothing too difficult for my installer. These 6 1/2's are powerful if provided with the proper amp. I'm a big fan of Infinity Kappas and JL components and these SX60's can definitley hold their own. I am more than satisfied with these components.

I have a 2002 Trans am with the Monsoon 10 speaker system. I bought these speakers to replace my front door speakers.. All I have to say is wow.. These things sound amazing.. The highs, the clarity, the sounds you didnt hear before in the music that these let you hear.. I you are looking for a good mid- to high range componant speaker then look no further.. If you want some lows also with your speaker then you might want to check out other speakers.. these dont really have the big base that my polks DB's have.. I wanted highs for the fronts and thats why I got these.. I am running these through my stock stereo and stock amp. All you guys and girls who read this if you are going to use these with the stock stereo and wiring and what not Do not use the stock monsoon crossovers for the Boston tweeters.. You need to USE THE BOSTON CROSSOVERS with them.. Set them to -4db's and you will be blown away.. anything more and you will loose your hearing from the highs..

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A few days ago my one of my Kicker K6.5 mids stopped working. I removed it to find that the speaker was blown. Due to it being a component set I tried to replace that one speaker. Well Kicker does not rebuild speakers and they are over three years old so no warranty. I went with the SX60's to replace the Kicker speakers. The Bostons sounds alot better then the kicker. The only advantage I would give to the Kicker is the mid bass was louder. The Kicker was a 6.75 speaker compaired to the Bostons 6.5. I do believe that the mid bass sounds better then the Kicker just not as loud. I am very exited with my purchase and I am already considering another set for the rear doors.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these along with a new set of Q Forms kick panels for my 1990 Firebird to replace the aging MB Quart components I previously had installed. With a Kenwood KDC-MP 4028 sending signals through an old Alpine V12 MRV-F400 the sound quality is terrific and is definitely a step up from the Quarts. The improvement in midbass over the Quarts is like night and day. Price was reasonable especially with these coming through a scratch and dent sale. The only fault was found to be one of the tweeter flush mounts that was easily fixed with a screw, washer and locking nut. The crossover units are of reasonable size and I easily found a hiding place to securely mount them. One thing I wasn't thrilled with was the grills, they offer little to no protection for the woofer plus they didn't fit the new kick panels. A spare set of grills I had lying around cured the problem quickly. Overall, I'm very pleased with these speakers and would highly recommend them to anyone.

Sound Great

I have these in the front doors of my SUV, and they sound great. I have the RF P450.4 powering them, putting out 60Wx4, and they sound really clear. The mids and highs are great, no distortion at all. I recommend an amp if you want these to live up to their full potential. You aren't going to get any bass out of these, so if you want bass, get a sub too.

Very Good

I have these in the front doors of my '88 MX-6, with an Alpine V-power 40X4 amp powering them. They are incredibly clear. Pink Floyds Time sounds amazing. they are a little sharp at times, but I just turn up the bass.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality is excellent. But for some reason BA doesn't include woofer grilles with these... just some plastic "frames" that surround but do not protect the woofer from oopsies. Crutchfield doesn't sell grilles this size so I bought a pair of generic ones elsewhere.

Audio bliss

Written by: LeftN from Minneapolis on August 14, 2006

Got these installed on the front doors of my 2003 Sequoia. I paired these with the Boston Acoustics SX65 in my rear doors. The head unit is a Kenwood. Powering all four speakers is a Rockford Fosgate Punch X200.4 that puts out 25x4 watts. The sound quality is just phenominal. They sound so much better then the stock speakers, and these Toyota stock speakers are on the high end. The bass isn't that good but the mids and highs are exceptional, the sound stage is so much better now. I know this is a cliche but I really can hear subtle things in my music that I never realized were there before, especially the highs like cymbals/hi hats. I knew that the low bass would not be so great with these speakers so I added a 10" bazooka to my system now my SUV never sounded so good. I always drive slow and never want to get out of my car now.

Woofer: The SX60 component system is equipped with copolymer woofers with butyl rubber surrounds. Each woofer has a neodymium magnet, the compact size of the magnet allows SX series speakers to fit where other high quality speakers don't. Neodymium magnets offer extraordinary power-to-weight ratio, approximately ten times the magnetic strength of a conventional iron-ferrite magnet of equal size.

Voice Coil: The oversized 1-1/2" voice coil increases overall power handling and reliability.

Tweeter: Each speaker uses a type-S2, 3/4" Kortec dome tweeter. Kortec is a silky fabric saturated on the underside with a proprietary stiffening agent. Because the inside surface of the dome is ultra stiff, the tweeter tracks the signal with ease and produces an excellent transient attack. Simultaneously, the soft, self-dampening top layer eliminates unwanted resonance, so the sound is smooth and articulate. The tweeters come with angled flush mount and angled surface mount brackets.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Width Frame Length Cutout Width Cutout Length Mounting Height Mounting Depth
Angled Flush Mount 1.846" 2.208" 1.472" 1.349" 0.973" 0.622"
Angled Surface Mount 1.846" 1.938" N/A N/A 1.718" 0.713" Screw Depth

Crossover: All SX speakers feature specifically tuned crossovers to deliver the best blend between the tweeter and woofer. The SX60 system comes with separate two-way adjustable crossovers. The crossovers can be mounted separately or docked together and mounted as one piece. You can adjust the tweeter output level by placing the supplied jumper on the appropriate terminals. Choose between a flat (0dB attenuation/factory setting) or an attenuated output of -2dB or -4dB. No crossover frequency or slope information was provided by the manufacturer.

Crossover Dimensions: Length=6.664", Height=1.464", Width=1.716" (individual), Width=3.374" (docked together)
