The clear, well-balanced sound of Boston's SX speakers offers an excellent performance boost to almost any car audio system.

The SX65 6-3/4" speaker combines Boston's Type-S2 tweeter with a heavy duty copolymer woofer and a durable rubber surround. A contoured tweeter plane provides an extended stereo "sweet spot" for smooth, realistic high-frequency response — no matter where you're sitting.

A built-in crossover sculpts the frequencies going to the woofer and tweeter for smooth blending of the highs and mids, and protects the tweeter against power overload. Compact, lightweight neodymium magnets reduce the size of these speakers so they can fit in more vehicles without sacrificing performance.

Note: Boston describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Why replace your factory speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

These are some of the best speakers I have ever heard, regardless of price. The sound is VERY clean and accurate. Instruments sound real. The treble isnt harsh at all. These can play VERY loud without distorting. As with most speakers, you need an external amplifier in order to maximize the sound.

For those complaining about the bass, 6.5 inch coaxials are never designed to produce bass. Dont bash the speaker just because you dont understand anything about speaker design. Thats what sub woofers are for.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used these to replace existing speakers in my Honda, and they sound miles better than the originals.

I have one beef with the set-up and that is with the connectors inside the crossovers. These are likely to be installed in car doors, and will be subject to rigorous treatment, yet the screw-down connectors in the crossovers are so weak that they worked loose in the first day. I had to clamp the wires to the base near the outlet of the crossover to stabilize the connections. I also reccomend soldering the stripped wires before inserting them into the crossovers.

These were my 4th different pair of Boston speakers... I have one word to say quality. The sound is good upon installation however be prepared to replace them over and over again. Oh by the way Crutchfield does not replace them, YOU need to send them in to get repaired. I finally learned my lesson and replaced 2 of my cars with infinity. Trust me you should do the same.

purchased these speakers as replacements for the factory ones in her 2000 lexus rx300. we are very happy with these speakers and would recommend them the sound is crisp and clear they sound great with the factory system which has an amp and sub. HOWEVER the mounting kits sent with them are almost useless. after some engineering and a little fabrication my son and I were able to get them installed the extra work was worth the effort.

Look for something else

Speakers sound muddy. You have to turn up volume to near the point of distortion to begin to get begin to get any sound separation. Paired these with new JVC head unit and S75 4x6 rears to replace the factory radio and speakers. May try to amplify and use a crossover. More work than I planned for....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased four of these speakers to replace the original factory speakers in a 1995 Camry. It was quite the challenge getting a few parts off the door panel to access the speakers but the phone support guys were wonderful. The job took a little bit more than I had planned but I eventually got them in. The old speakers had three holes, the new four. I did have to do some drilling and adjustments but they walked me through it. So much extra equipment was sent I had to ask which ones I was supposed to use and which ones I could discard. The rear speakers were hard to get to but again, the phone support and diagrams were extremely helpful. The sound quality is great. Would I do it again...probably.

Recently purchased and installed the Boston Acoustics SX65; at a good price.

Sound quality is pretty good, however it's a little flat on the bass side. The magnet is fairly small, but that's too be expected.

Overall, for the price, it's a good deal. It's a good set/pair for a quick upgrade from stock speakers.

The Best!!!

Written By jesse, TX on Saturday, September 20, 2008

I just got a set of this to go with my pontiac and a set of the matching 6x9 and all i can say is wow!!! I started with the infinity reference speakers and took them back due to no bass. This speakers have the best sound quality of all period.

Now, for those of you who want to upgrade from stock with out an amp or just with a aftermarket head unit then this are not for you. If that's your plan then consider the entry level and those do sound good with very little power. I'm running them of a aplime 50x4 and again they sound great. Try them and trust me you won't regret it.

Better than factory but still disappointed...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to largely agree with the first poster of these. Though they are not the worst speakers Ive ever heard, they are definitely not the greatest either for their price range. I bought these after taking an expert advisor's advice about these and had them installed in the front and back. Though they, of course, sound better than the factory speakers I replaced, they leave a lot to be desired - and I also have to turn the bass all the way up to get the output from them. Also, the volume has to be turned up to even get at the bass they are supposed to have. Now I have to buy a separate amp to try to salvage my investment in these.

Don't Purchase these speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I almost never write a review of a product but I thought something should be said about these speakers. These speakers put out zero bass. I called Crutchfield to order the 6.5 JBL because of there reviews which are great. I have always bought Polk or JBL speakers in the past but I knew Polks are not very efficent and I didn't want to run an amp, I only am replacing the factory because the right speakers was cracking. The Crutchfield advisor suggested that I try these Boston Acustic speakers, because they were the same price as the JBLs that I was looking at and he said they were just as efficent and would sound better. These are the worst sounding speakers I have ever heard and I used to install systems for a living so I have heard alot of speakers in a lot of cars. They are so bad that I had to adjust the bass all the way up to get anywhere close to the sound I had from the factory speakers and then I realized that the bass was not coming from the Boston SX65 it was coming from the factory 4X6 in the backdoors. I hope Crutchfield will exchange these for the JBLs, otherwise I am going to have to spend another $100 ordering some decent speakers, these will drive me crazy soon. I guess this is why there are a lot of returned ones in the outlet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these with a set of SX95s. The SX95s are in the front doors, and
the SX65s are in the rear of a quad cab pickup. They are being driven by
an AVIC D3.

I wrote a review of the SX95s which was unfavorable, and I'd like to retract
that review. They were being run by themselves and I did not have them
EQed properly. Now with the SX65s installed and the avic D3 set properly,
the sound is considerably better than the BOSE system in my other car.

They have a surprising ammount of bass, lots of detail and are very
versatile. With flat EQ in my application they are a bit harsh, but by giving
the mid-bass frequenceis a mild boost, everything comes together. System
has good punch, lots of detail, and a sweet midrange.

I am not a car stereo expert, but these sepakers do not appear to have
any deficiencies. My only complaint is that the system does not start to
sound great until sound is at a moderate/loud volume. I probably need a
bigger amp with more headroom.

Anyway, I would rate them a great value.

Awsome Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to fill-in the sound of my 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab truck. I am have placed them in the rear doors. They are paired with a set of Boston Acoustics FX60 component speakers, powered by a 1000 watt 4-channel amp. These speakers are clear and precise. I am extremely happy with my purchase and as always, Crutchfield makes it impossible to purchase from anyone else with their superior customer service.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read all the reviews left by everyone on any site that I could. And I'm glad I didn't listen to any of the naysayers. I love these speakers. They sound great, to those of you that don't like the bass output maybe its your headunit and not the speakers. My Pioneer DEH-P3600 shapes the sound perfect for them. These things love 63 Hz and are clear as a bell. I will buy another set for the rear doors of my Silverado soon.

99 escalade

Written By LOCOS4BASS, chicago on Friday, May 09, 2008

i just put two sets of these and a pair of 12" kicker L7 powered by a 1501d from mtx and the 404 also from mtx in a 99 escalade which had the BOSE audio system. let me tell you not only can i crank it up to 3/4 of the volume and hear no distortion at all but i can hear the lyrics crisp and clear about a block away. like i tell my freinds if you cant hear or feel me before you can see me then whats the point. if you decide to get these awsome speakers get an amp that will push 50watts rms and a sub for bass, these aren't designed to handle low bass.

Use factory door mounts 97 Camry

I had trouble trying to mount these in my factory door positions at first. Then I decided to remove the factory speakers from their mounting brackets & used silicone to bond the included Boston mounts. Worked sweet & sounds great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a difficult time trying to find the best bolt pattern to use with the adapter plates when I was installing these speakers; none of the optional holes would alow you to use all four exsisting original speaker holes. I own a 2000 Toyota 4-runner and apparently the doors all have nonremoveable plastic speaker boxes that dont welcome their bolt pattern. I managed to use three of the four bolts to secure these speakers; I used some washers, bubble rap and electrical tape to complete the seal and eliminate any gap and vibration around the speaker.

another review was right about the brackets, but other than that everything was included as always. i have these in the front doors of a 97 neon (jealous?) with dynamat xtreme, and it sounds great. i have kappa 6x9's in the rear deck that didn't sound that great when i had pioneer 3 way 6 1/2's in the doors. i definitely noticed the overall difference when the boston's were installed.

Boston Acoustics SX65

I have 2 SX65's in the FRONT of my 97 camry and 2 SX95's (6x9) in the REAR deck. I have a Pioneer DEH 6800 head unit which supplies ABOUT 20 watts RMS per speaker and the difference in these speakers and my factory ones were IMMEDIATELY noticeable. I have YET to experience distortion. And to TOP IT OFF, as the first guy said, I haven't even hooked them up to an amplifier yet! I just recieved the amp a week ago but my car is in the shop for other reasons so I cant pull an all-nighter to put the amp in. My Sony XM-SD46X 4 channel amp is a PERFECT match for these speakers. I will also be installing dynamat in the front doors so that these speakers will sound even better. I already have dynamat on the rear deck. If you are going to spend this kind of money on these speakers, then save up enough and get you a PERFECT amplifier (like the one I noted) and seal them off with the dynamat. Although I haven't finished adding the amp or the dynamat, these speakers still DOMINATE! They don't (as previously mentioned in other reviews) provide much low-end bass but that's why I have 2 12" Sony Xplod's hooked up through a different amp lol. GREAT BUY!

Great upgrade for the $

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in the front doors of my 2002 Grand Cherokee, which were an upgrade from the factory speakers. The sound quality is outstanding! The bass is a litle lacking, in my opinion, but that's what you get a sub for right? These are also powered by a factory stereo, for now, so that should speak volumes to their quality.

My only issue (very minor): The speaker adapters I was sent, to put these 6.5's into a 6x9 hole, DO NOT have corresponding mounting holes for where the installation holes are...I needed to drill them on my own. A minor hassle, but one to be noted.

Give these a shot you won't be disappointed!

Written By LeftN, Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, August 15, 2006

I installed a pair of these in the rear door of my 2003 Sequoia. I have the SX60 installed in the front doors. These use the same Boston's Type-S2 tweeter as in the SX60. The highs and mids are exceptionally crisp and clear. I use an external amp to power them (Rockford Fosgate Punch 200.4). I never realized how good music can be. They are way, way better then stock speakers. I can crank up the sound to high levels without hearing any distortion or clipping. The only drawback to these small speakers is that the low bass isn't too great. But adding a subwoofer will fix that.

Product Research

Tweeter: Each speaker uses a type-S2, 3/4" Kortec dome tweeter. Kortec is a silky fabric saturated on the underside with a proprietary stiffening agent. Because the inside surface of the dome is ultra stiff, the tweeter tracks the signal with ease and produces an excellent transient attack. Simultaneously, the soft, self-dampening top layer eliminates unwanted resonance, so the sound is smooth and articulate. The contoured tweeter plane delivers smooth extension and strong on-axis and off-axis response.

Woofer: The copolymer woofer cone has a durable butyl rubber surround and stands up to the harsh automotive environment.

Crossover: All SX speakers feature specifically tuned crossovers to deliver the best blend between the tweeter and woofer. Each also features tweeter protection for optimal performance and reliability.

Voice Coil: The oversized 1-1/2" voice coil increases overall power handling and reliability.

Installation: The compact size of the magnet allows SX series speakers to fit where other high quality speakers don't. Neodymium magnets offer extraordinary power-to-weight ratio, approximately ten times the magnetic strength of a conventional iron-ferrite magnet of equal size. The SX65 will fit in 6-3/4" applications when the supplied bracket is used. The SX65 will also fit 6-1/2" speaker applications, but drilling new screw holes will be necessary.
