    Features

5.1ch Speaker Package: The Boston Acoustic SoundWare XS Special Edition 5.1 Home Theater System is an ultra-compact 5.1ch speaker loudspeaker system that offers rich, room-filling surround sound while complementing your decor. Including five matching satellites (for front, center, and surround speakers) and a powered subwoofer; the SoundWare XS Special Edition Home Theater Speaker System delivers big sound from a small package. Additional Boston Acoustic SoundWare satellite speakers (065SNDWRB, sold separately) can be purchased for a 6.1, 7.1, or 9.1 home theater system configuration.

SoundWare XS SE Satellite Speakers: The SoundWare XS SE satellite speakers are incredibly small, yet provide high performance sound. With their contemporary diamond-shape and attractive high-gloss finish, the SoundWare XS SE speakers make excellent addition to your home theater. Each of the five two-way satellite speakers house a 0.5" fabric dome tweeter for crisp highs, and a high-performance 2.5" treated paper mid-bass woofer with rubber surround for deep lows in an acoustic suspension enclosure. Compact driver placement and quality, along with system-specific crossovers assure a wide uniform dispersion for complete coverage of your listening room. Each satellite speaker also includes MagnaGuard magnetic shielding, which ensures its magnetic field does not interfere with your television picture. Each SoundWare XS SE satellite speaker features a pair of gold-plated spring-loaded speaker terminals that will accept up to 16-gauge speaker wire.

Powered Subwoofer w/ BassTrac: The powered subwoofer houses a down-firing 8" treated-paper woofer with foam surround in a bass-reflex enclosure with an acoustically tuned down-firing port for highly efficient bass response. The 100-watt (250-watt peak) amplifier ensures powerful bass reproduction of the most demanding audio.  Proprietary BassTrac technology maximizes bass output while avoiding overload. The powered subwoofer features a mono-RCA line-level input to connect to the subwoofer (LFE) output of your AV receiver. The powered sub offers the following rear-panel controls to adjust the woofer to your preference.

    • Volume: Adjust the subwoofer Volume control until you hear a match between the front satellite speakers and the subwoofer. Bass response should not overpower the room, but rather be adjusted so there is a natural blend across the entire musical range.
    • Crossover: Adjusts the frequency of the low pass filter for the subwoofer between 40Hz and 180Hz @ 24 dB/oct. Fine-tune the crossover setting by ear for the smoothest blend with the main satellite speakers. The best setting of the crossover control will depend on speaker placement and personal preference. The recommended crossover setting for this system is 180Hz.
    • Polarity: Select regular (0°) or inverted (180°) phase for the subwoofer. Set this switch to provide the fullest, most dynamic bass. The effect of phase will be most audible on low-frequency percussion instruments or music with a continuously repeating bass line.
Note: The powered subwoofer will turn on automatically when an audio input signal is received and off several minutes after the audio signal stops.

Mounting Options: The SoundWare XS SE satellite speakers' unique design allows you to place the speakers on a shelf or mount them on a wall at almost any angle. The supplied mounting hardware allows you to mount the speakers flush or in a corner, and their pivoting mounting brackets let you aim the sound where you want it. Each speaker also includes a 1/4"-20 threaded insert for aftermarket wall-mount brackets or stands, and a tab for attaching a security device.

Note: Included with each satellite speaker is an assortment of mounting hardware. Two metal keyhole-slot brackets are included; one for a flat wall and one for a corner. If you use a keyhole-slot bracket, you must attach the supplied pivoting ball mount to the speaker. The pivoting ball mount allows the speaker to pivot 20° in either direction and pivot down up to 40° when mounted to a flat wall. The corner mount bracket will not allow the speaker to pivot side-to-side. A set-screw keeps the speaker from moving once it has been positioned.

When playing music through a 5.1 system what can I expect? I would like the 5.1 for occasional movies and live sports but primarily will use for music in the house. Good idea or not?

These kick butt. They were on sale . I think they sound better than the bose acoustimass. Mine are powered by onkyo. Amazing value for the price

This system with the right receiver sounds great. I paired mine with a Denon e300. 5.1 is better for movies but receivers have different sound modes. If you pair this system with one that has 5 channel stereo, music will be amplified by the extra 3 speakers. I would compare this speaker system to the Bose cube systems. I have had a lot of sound systems, but this system I am 110% glad I purchased it! I definitely would recommend this system! It's a great idea to purchase this system, but if you are going to play music more than movies I would suggest a receiver with more sound modes for music.

Just wondering if the speakers and the sub hookup together by themselves or if you have to buy a receiver?

You don't need the receiver. You should be able to directly hook-up to the TV.
    ravi l  Jan 06, 2014

Yes you will need a receiver to hookup the speakers in to it. the amp that comes with the sub is only to be use with the pre-amp out from the receiver . the speakers and the sub are great.

So, it looks like five satellite speakers come with this system. Do I just use one of the satellites as the center channel? What is recommended?

That's what I did... They're all identical so it doesn't matter which. Seems to work just fine.

Yes, a 5.1 system as is, or pick up a dedicated center channel and use the system as a 6.1.

    Q
It looks like the 2.1 system from BA does not require an amp, but am I not sure. I assume this requires a receiver, correct? I was wondering if BA or any other speaker system did not require an amp. Used to own Powered Partners years ago. Great for a PC or TV with no Amp required.

Happy Holiday David B Yes the BA XS special edition does require an amp for the 5.1 system which is basic use for the home theater systems. The 2.1 system can be hooked up directly from your T.V. for better sound also its wireless feature lets you hook up your smartphone. It also has bluetooth wireless connectivity feature. Each system has its perks but overall it is a great product and Crutchfield always sells the best. Paul

David, I just installed these and run them thru my Harmon kardon receiver. The sub is powered but I don't believe you can run these without some type of receiver. BA made PC speaker/sub set back in the day but not sure if they still do. Good luck!

David, assuming that the 2.1 system is the same as the Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS Special Edition minus three speakers, yes, a receiver is required. I just got this on 12/22 and right now I'm just using the front three speakers and the sub with my Onkyo TX-NR626 in my family room. It's working out quite well. The right price and product for the space.

No wires or connectors are supplied. I bought a spool of 16-gauge RCA brand speaker wire. It's working fine.

This does not come with speaker wire. I would suggest talking to a Crutchfield specialist who has knowledge about what type of speaker wire is recommended. Usually the bigger the speaker wire, the better sound.
    rich  Dec 17, 2013

No speaker wire. I hooked everything up to my existing speaker wires from my old system. I have to say I really like this sound system. Not hugely powerful, but I have a small house and the sound is quite good. I would recommend it-a great deal for the price.
