Our take on the Boston Acoustics TVee M20

by Kristen Schaub
Boston Acoustics

Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Getting better sound doesn't have to be a hassle, at least not with Boston's TVee Model 20. It creates noticeably clearer, more powerful sound than what you get with your TV's tiny speakers. It's ideal if you're looking for a simple, space-saving way to upgrade your TV's sound.

The TVee system includes two pieces: a slender stereo sound bar and a compact wireless subwoofer. Together they provide big, room-filling sound. You can more easily hear dialogue and other sonic details, even when you're not sitting directly in front of your TV.

The included subwoofer might look small, but it offers big sonic improvements. It gives you the booms and rumbles that make things like action flicks and suspense movies so exciting at the theater. And since it's wireless, you can place it just about anywhere in your room — just plug it into a nearby power outlet and you're set.

    Features

Overview: The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 is a two-piece television entertainment enhancement system. It consists of a self-powered soundbar that can be placed above or below the TV, and a matching wireless-powered subwoofer. The TVee Model 20 offers dramatically better sound quality than your flat-panel HDTV's built-in speakers. There is only one cable which connects the system to your television and you can control it with your TV's remote. The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 is perfectly sized for TVs 32-inches and up.

Soundbar: The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 soundbar is equipped with dual 1-1/2" x 6" HHRT (Hyperbolic High-Rigidity Tranducer) drivers inside a bass-reflex enclosure made of ABS plastic. The TVee Model 20's soundbar is perfectly sized for TV screens of 32" or more. It is designed to be centered with the television's screen. It can be placed in front of the TV, or on a shelf right above if the TV is housed in a cabinet. There are two large keyhole slots to facilitate mounting it on a wall. The soundbar is equipped with a black cloth removable grille.

Wireless Subwoofer: The wireless-powered subwoofer is equipped with a down-firing 6" woofer inside a bass-reflex enclosure with a downfiring 2.25" (diameter) port. The wireless subwoofer's enclosure is made of ABS and has been internally braced with MDF to eliminate resonance. The TVee Model 20's bass unit gets its signal from the soundbar wirelessly (2.4 GHz), so it can be placed virtually anywhere in the room (up to 25').

80 Watt System Power: The soundbar and wireless subwoofer are self-powered and each are equipped with its own built-in amplifier. The TVee Model 20 features a total system power of 80 watts to drive both the soundbar and wireless subwoofer.

3D Sound Processing Circuitry: The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 features 3D sound processing circuitry for exciting three-dimensional sound that you cannot get from simply your TV's built-in speakers.

One Connection: All the TVee Model 20 needs is a stereo audio signal fed into the soundbar (40" stereo RCA cable included). You can get this signal from your TV's audio output, or from your satellite or cable box (the soundbar also requires AC power). The powered subwoofer gets its signal wirelessly (2.4 GHz) from the soundbar; it only requires plugging into an AC outlet.

Wireless ID Switches: Both the soundbar and subwoofer have wireless ID switches, The various switch settings (1-4) change frequency of the wireless signal the soundbar sends to the subwoofer. The two switches must be set to the same position.

Simple Controls: The soundbar has three top-mounted controls: Power, Mute, and Volume Up/Down. If the input signal from your TV or cable box is variable, the TVee Model 20's sound will vary when you change the volume using the TV or Cable Box remote. If the input signal is a constant level, you can "teach" the TVee Model 20 to respond to your TV's remote control. The wireless subwoofer also features a rear-panel independent volume control.

Trim Level Switch: The soundbar's trim-level switch changes the input sensitivity (1-3) of the TV Model 20 to match the output level of your TV or satellite/cable box.

Auto Power: The power switches on the back of the soundbar and subwoofer can be left on. The TVee Model 20 has an automatic power standby system. After about 15 minutes of inactivity, the built-in amplifiers shut down. As soon as a signal is applied to the inputs of the TVee Model 20, the integrated amplifiers turn on again.

Boston Acoustics Lives Up to Its Stellar Reputation

Written By RickR, Roswell, GA on Thursday, July 28, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with my Soundbar and Wireless Sub-Woofer. It sounds great! I feel like I'm in a movie theatre. And the wireless sub-woofer (versus a wired one) gives lots of options on its placement. I'm using the system in a medium-sized living room (13' x 18') of a 2-bedroom condo. Given all the negative feedback I've read in other reviews concerning the soundbar's inability to learn from the TV remote, I didn't even try to teach mine. (This system does not have its own remote but is supposed to be able to learn from the TV's remote.) That's okay, I usually just set the volume to a certain level and leave it that way anyway. If one desires to adjust the volume, there are manual buttons on the soundbar itself. I think a system like this is a necessary addition to any flat screen TV, especially to the ultra-thin ones. I plan to get one of the ultra-thin ones (an LCD LED), and people are complaining like crazy that the speakers of those TV's are substandard. I'm not surprised because, to me, getting good speakers to fit into a 1 1/2" deep panel is an impossible task to begin with. It's better to spring for the extra money for the surround sound system (or the soundbar and wireless sub-woofer like I did). You get the best of both worlds that way -- a wonderful picture AND wonderful sound. Boston Acoustics lives up to its reputation with this system.

    My new Boston TVee M20

Love it. I have no problem w/remote vol.control from 10 to 15 ft. as others are
having. I just point & click. HOWEVER, I was unable to "educate" my Direct TV
remote. I had to use my Samsung remove from the TV which means I must use 2
seperate remotes instead of just one. The Direct TV remote for on,off,ch. change et.
and the Samsung remote for vol. control and muting only. Not happy with this set
up but the sound is great! Well worth the price.

I just added this to my new 46'' and I gotta say, man what a difference. I have a
med. size viewing room and this system is more than enough. It was almost too
easy to set up, and programing was a snap. (dish remote) The wireless sub. is
also a big plus and can really thump. A great sound system for the money.

Its Close, But Not Quite the One

Written By MC, Afton, VA on Monday, March 14, 2011

I finally did it, bought a 50" Plasma, a Blu-Ray and this sleek TVee M20 unit. I purchased the TVee because it was affordable and sounded great in the store, the bass has a solid punch and when you turn up the volume it sounds real good. Problem is the I/R sensor on the sound bar is horrible for picking up the volume control from any remote control unit, you have to be 2-3' from the TVee to change the volume or mute it. I am dissapointed and will be returning for a unit that has a valid remote control function, hopefully it sounds as good as this unit, or better...

The unit was easy to install and the sound quality was good. However, I have returned
this product because we could not sync the sound bar to any remote control. We tried our
Comcast remote and we bought a universal remote. None of them would work with our
    Samsung 46" TV.

I talked with a tech at Crutchfield and he was helpful by making sure I was following the
instructions for setup. However, have several tries we decided to return this for a refund.

Greatly enhances the sound of our flat screen HD set. Only negative is the use of the
remote. It requires getting closer to the TV to adjust the volume and mute the sound than
is usual with the internal speakers.
The sound quality improvement more than compensates for the remote short-coming.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The addition of the Boston Accoustics TV M20 Sound Bar and subwoofer to my SONY
60" flat screen is fabulous! The set up was all of 15 minutes. I was astounded by the
sound. The clarity of the Sound Bar for voices is great and the subwoofer provides a nice
deep bass and it's only at mid range.
Upon set up I wanted to really test what it could do and or perform. I always heard that
the movie Top Gun was a great one to hear in Surround Sound. Fortunately I have the
movie. The beginning of the movie with the jets taking off and the fighting in the sky,
OMG! I thought I was in the jet. The family room was rockin!

Thanks Crutchfield for the product tip and experience.

    Great Sound

Written By Rick, Cleveland on Tuesday, February 01, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TVee M20 sounds great and it's the simplest piece of audio equipment I've
ever owned. I like that it learns YOUR remote, instead of giving you another
remote. It's not hard to set up, but to get it in learn mode you have to start
with power+volume up even if you want to set volume down or mute. After a few
minutes I actually read the instructions and had to laugh a little at how I had
over complicated things. The subwoofer can go almost anywhere and it sounds
like the sound is coming from the soundbar. Sports really sound like a
surround, and you can hear fans behind you and to the sides. It's pretty neat,
but movies and TV shows don't seem to have that. The sound seems much more
focused. Bass is tight, highs aren't shrill. Bass isn't super deep, but more
than adequate for a small to medium room.

My only complaint is that it only uses an analog (red/white) input. My TV
only has SPDIF audio out, so I had to get a cable box to use this.
Unfortunately, because of this limitation, I had to get an A/B switcher and run
red/white cables out of my DVD player to the switcher. I'd rather have the
SPDIF in on the soundbar so that whatever is going to my TV comes out. The Wii
just uses the TV speakers for sound. Newer TV's are doing away with analog
audio out (my cable guy said digital was better, but I have plenty of vinyl to
prove him wrong!), and the option of SPDIF in would have been great.

I really like this and wouldn't hesitate recommending it to anyone.

It's fine for the small room that I have it set up in. It has a deeper, more mellow sound than
the TV speakers and the subwoofer is adequate. The power connections on the sound bar
and on the module between the wall outlet and the sound bar are not very sturdy
(cheap/loose). They can become disconnected very easily if moved/touched.

Great sound from a basic system.

Written By Bob, Wallington, NJ. on Saturday, October 30, 2010

I just bought a 52" TV for a normal size room. I wanted better sound but didn't want to buy an amp and deal with hanging speakers etc. I called Crutchfield because they had a couple systems close in price. They told me I'd like this system.

IT IS GREAT! Super easy to hook up. Plug it in the wall, plug in the L&R RCA plugs that come with it and your done. They also give you a super easy direction sheet so the unit will operate with your remote.

The sound is LOUD, nice Bass, and a great price. So if you want speakers to enhance your new Wide Screen TV but don't want to deal with buying a sound system. Get this and you won't be sorry. Crutchfield once again comes through.

    disappointed

Written By Mark, Diamond Bar, CA on Friday, October 29, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was extremely happy with Crutchfield's service. Troy spent the better part of an hour helping me decide what type of device would meet my needs and budget.

Unfortunately, I was unable to configure the soundbar to respond to my DirecTV remote. Telephone support was very patient and helpful, but we both concluded that for unknown reasons even following the directions couldn't get the thing to work.

I returned the sound bar with a Return Authorization number that was easy to obtain with a single phone call to Crutchfield without anyone trying to dissuade or discourage me.

I fully intend to purchase from Crutchfield in the future, despite this disappointment, and the primary reason is the entirely service-oriented attitude of the organization. I'm a price-shopper, but I would buy a higher-priced item from Crutchfield.

Of course, my opinion probably will change if I don't see the full credit for the returned sound bar on my credit card statement. :) But I don't expect that to happen.

Sound great, remote learning feature not so much

Written By JaZ, Folsom, Ca on Sunday, October 10, 2010

Pros: I recently purchased these speakers after comparing them to the Polk Audio SurroundBar 6000 while in a store. I have to say for the price, the sound is great. The main soundbar has vents located on each end which tends to "bounce" sounds off the wall.
While these are stereo speakers, occasionally while sitting in the middle of the room, you would swear you hear sounds coming from around you. I realize it sounds silly, but I've muted the TV more than once thinking my wife was talking on the phone. Sometimes it gives the show your watching an odd sound effect though.
Setup is a snap, don't expect more than 15 minutes to get it up and running.
The sub provides adequate punch, but don't expect room shattering bass. It does however give a nice well rounded sound to the entire system.

Cons: Granted for the moment we have this paired up with an older television for which the speakers were dying, the soundbar will only learn 1 command from our remote, which is volume up. I've tried pairing it with volume down the the mute button, but to no avail.
Also the instructions are not the most helpful as others pointed out. It would help if Boston Acoustics would provide a list of known remotes/tv codes the speakers will work with. It's a shame, but this speaker will likely end up being taken back in favor of the Polk system which includes remote learning and a remote. If the remote worked, I would happily purchase these again.

Boston Acoustics TVee M20 - Disappointed

Written By JCE, Norco, LA on Thursday, August 19, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To compliment my Crutchfield purchase of Samsung Plasma 58" TV I added a Boston Acoustic TVee M20 Sound Bar System, as I know the typical TV speakers are know to be bland to say the least on most flat panel TVs. The soundbar system arrived and I began inspecting the few switches and knobs and noticed that the frequency selection switch on the wireless sub was broken off and I found it in the bottom of the packing/box. I adjusted to frequency with a small screwdriver and the system can to life. Immediately I noticed that the sound quality was as bland as the TV sound so I made a few adjustments with no real improvement. I then pulled the grill of the soundbar and was shocked and what I found was laughable... two 1.5" x 6" paper speakers that look as if they were harvested from a 1965 Plymouth Coronet (I should have researched this item better). The size of the soundbar is deceiving at 30 3/4" wide so you would expect a bit more hardware inside.

Keep in mind, I didn't by the Boston Acoustics Soundbar with the expectations that it would sound comparable to a full surround system but the Boston Acoustics TVee M20 was totally unacceptable.

Crutchfield customer support was more than helpful with the selection of another Soundbar, which is the Polk Audio SoundBar SDA. I have my fingers crossed that the Polk unit sounds better and arrived undamaged.

    Great Sound - Great Price

Written By Anonymous, ROB, Westchester, NY on Thursday, August 05, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked around on line for a while... trying to find a sound bar with good sound and fairly inexpensive. I decided to try the TVee M20. I received the Boston Acoustics TVee M20, had it connected in 15 minutes! I had a question on the unit learning the remote, call Crutchfield and they helped me out immediately. It sounds great, the wireless sub is so convenient and adds punch to the TV audio. I have watched/listened to regular TV shows, concerts, DVD's and everything sounds great. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to upgrade their TV audio at a reasonable price. I appreciate quality audio, my stereo is high quality components with B&W speakers.

This is a simple way to get surround sound without a stereo receiver, and a bunch of wires. The speaker sound bar fits perfectly in front of the LCD TV (on a stand) and provides the amplifier sound. The wireless subwoofer can be placed anywhere without having to run speaker wires. I was concerned about the wireless RF conflicts with the computer router and the wireless telephone (DECT 6.0), but did not experience those potential problems. This system is for anyone who is tired of hearing the muffled sound coming from the back of all TVs today. If you have a HDTV, then you must have similar quality audio for the true experience.

Bang for Buck - A Thumbs Up!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with my recent purchase of the TVee M20. Bang for buck, I think this is a nice little unit. It produces nice, room-filling sound, and is super simple to hook up. It also does a nice job of balancing dialogue and loud music/action scenes. I don't have a fancy reciever, or any good place to mount sourrond sound speakers in my living room, so that's why this product appealed to me. It connects to my TV via an RCA audio cable. I did have some issues programming my remotes with it, but finally got it figured out. The directions seemed a little vague, so the quick setup sheet is more helpful than the booklet. For an inexpensive way to add some well rounded sound, I give it a thumbs up.
