Retrosound R-483N

The right speakers for your vintage vehicle

RetroSound makes it easy to replace the factory speakers in almost any car — classic, vintage, or even brand new. Their RetroMod Series speakers feature extremely shallow baskets designed to fit into a wide variety of standard speaker locations. They may look old school, but RetroSound builds their speakers from the ground up, using the latest techniques and materials.

Sturdy materials, detailed sound

Each R-483N 4"x8" speaker features a powerful neodymium magnet and a low-carbon steel frame that form a strong foundation. The sturdy pulp composite woofer with its Santoprene surround delivers powerful performance while standing up to heat and humidity. Dual Mylar dome tweeters broadcast detailed highs without sounding shrill, and the speaker's low profile helps increase installation options. These speakers were designed to fit in these vehicles:

  • 1967-71 Ford Mustang with stereo factory radio
  • 1966 Ford Thunderbird with Quadrophonic 8-track factory radio (requires 2 pairs, one set for each door)

Although efficient enough to play well with any receiver alone, these RetroMod speakers can handle the high power from aftermarket amplifiers to deliver your music with plenty of impact. Replace your wornout old 4"x8"s with these updated RetroSounds, and your tunes will sound new again, just like your classic ride.

FINALLY! I've waited 35 years!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've needed DOOR mounted speakers for my 67 Mustang since the day I bought it in 1978. The problem has always been that there were no 4x8 speakers available OF ANY KIND. Being a classic car buff, I did not wish to destroy my door and install something else. 4x10's were the closest available, and the magnets interfered with the window mechanism, so a terrible fit. These fit using the factory plastic water shields, only needing a jumper wiring harness12071021 to direct plug and play. I believe CRUTCHFIELD will supply them upon request. I would really like a set to connect these babies up, so if you are a CRUTCHFIELD rep, send me a set!

Pros: Perfect Fitment!

Cons: Need connectors #12071021 for factory plug-ins

Product Research

Woofer: The speakers feature rigid pulp composite cone woofers with Santoprene surrounds. The woofers use Neodymium magnets to achieve their shallow depth, so they fit in tight factory locations.

Tweeters: The two tweeters are low profile Mylar domes.

Compatibility: Although we haven't seen the cars to research, RetroSound's website shows the R-483N fitting in these cars:

  • 67-71 Ford Mustang with stereo factory radio
  • 66 Ford Thunderbird with quadraphonic 8-Track factory radio
