About the RetroSound R-57N

Buck Pomerantz

Go Retro

RetroSound makes it easy to replace the factory speakers in almost any classic, vintage, or even new car. Their RetroMod Series speakers feature extremely shallow chrome baskets designed to fit into a wide variety of standard speaker locations. They may look old school, but RetroSound builds their speakers from the ground up, using the latest techniques and materials.

Important Note: This is a single 5"x7" speaker, so you'll need to purchase a pair for vehicles with two 5"x7" openings.

Retrosound R-57N

The single R-57N 5"x7" speaker is designed for a classic car with only one speaker opening on its dash or rear deck. The woofer features dual voice coils, each one connected to its own tweeter. Your stereo receiver connects to both voice coils, so you get a stereo mix from a single speaker. In effect, you get two 2-way speakers in one frame, for modern sound in your vintage application.

The R-57N speaker features a powerful neodymium magnet and a low-carbon steel chrome frame that form a strong foundation. The sturdy pulp composite woofer with its Santoprene surround delivers powerful performance while standing up to heat and humidity. The two Mylar dome tweeters broadcast detailed highs without sounding shrill, and their low profile helps increase installation options.

Although efficient enough to play well with any receiver alone, this RetroMod speaker can handle the high power from aftermarket amplifiers. Replace that wornout old 5"x7" with this updated RetroSound, and your tunes will sound new again, just like your classic ride.

Grilles are not included; the factory grilles should be suitable for most applications.

Product Research

Features

Woofer: The speaker features a rigid pulp composite cone woofer with a Santoprene surround. The woofer uses a Neodymium magnet to achieve its shallow depth, so it fits in tight factory locations.

Tweeters: Two Mylar tweeters are wired separately so this single speaker will accept a stereo input.

Dual Voice Coils: The woofer has dual voice coils, each wired with one of the tweeters. The stereo input is useful in many older cars with a single speaker location in the dash or rear deck. If used in a standard two speaker application the inputs should be wired in parallel (to present a 2Ω load) or series (to present an 8Ω load).

Q
Do these come with grilles?

Actually you would wire them in series, assuming these are 4 ohm speakers. Most modern speakers are 4 ohms. Older car radios require an 8 ohm speaker load. It's important to have the proper load especially on an older car radio. By buying dual speakers such as this, and wiring the two sides in series the ohm load doubles (the 4 ohms from each combine to make 8 ohms). You would wire the + of one speaker to the - of the other, then connect your + from the radio to the + on a speaker and the - from the radio to the remaining - on the other speaker. This is a pretty good way to come up with an 8 ohm "modern" speaker for a vintage car radio. 8 ohm speakers, especially in automotive sizes are hard to find. You need to know the load required by your radio. Naturally this all applies only to connecting a vintage MONO car radio to a modern PAIR of 4 ohm speakers as one.

No. It's meant to go where the original mono speaker was mounted, which is generally behind some sort of grille on the dashboard.

George- It didn't come with a grill included, however they do have surface mount kits which do have a grill. I personally used the factory grill on top of the speaker which fit with minor modifications to the speaker. Tom

A
There is no grille included.

No, but both applications I used them for were center dash under the pad

Q
How does one wire a dual voice speaker from a single voice radio?
ed  May 24, 2015

A
Ed- You would have to wire them in parallel to raise the ohms for single output. Wiring them in parallel will make both voice coils function as one. If you only have a single voice output the best option would be to get a single coil speaker. Tom

This speaker has the right and left channels built into one speaker. if you only have one channel, buy a different speaker.
zach  May 28, 2015
A
Buy different speakers.
