Retrosound MODEL ONE, Classic Car Media Receiver

Connect your iPod, MP3 player, or satellite radio

Retro RS-MODEL ONE B, Classic Car Media Receiver

The Model One looks like an old-fashioned radio, but it offers all the modern conveniences. You can connect your iPod, MP3 player, or portable satellite radio to the front or rear auxiliary inputs. Hook up a thumb drive loaded with music files to the rear USB input, and you'll be able to view track info on the LCD screen. An SD™-card slot lets you play MP3 and WMA files you've loaded on a card — it's nice to have choices. The Model One also offers excellent AM/FM reception, and can show song info if a radio station is broadcasting text information.

Installation options

Two sets of preamp outputs let you add external amplifiers, and a remote control is included for added convenience. The Model One also comes with a U-bracket for mounting the radio under the dash or in any other convenient spot. And with the addition of the optional 94" remote extension cord, you can even install the Model One in a hidden location and operate it with the wireless remote control.

Features

Overview: The Retro Sound Model One is a classic car shaft-style radio offering flexible mounting options using an Infinimount shaft/bracket system (patent pending). The Retro Sound Model One offers Front and Rear Auxiliary Inputs, USB input for MP3/WMA digital file playback from popular USB flash devices (thumb drives), and built-in AM/FM tuner. The Model One was created to meet the needs of classic car enthusiasts for a radio that maintains the classic in dash look of the vehicle while offering modern playback capabilities from today's digital music sources. An optional 94" remote mount infrared "eye" (068RSIRCBL, sold separately) even allows for complete hide away placement of the Model One, allowing a completely stock appearance of any car, RV, motorcycle.

Note: The Retro Sound Mode One is available with a Chrome or Black faceplate to match to match your classic car's dash.

Infinimount Shaft/Bracket System: The Infinimount Shaft/Bracket System allows you to mount the Model One radio in more classic cars. This is because the shaft-knobs are not mounted to the unit, but instead connect to the unit via a harness so you can space the radio's shaft knobs at various distances from the chassis of the radio (0.3125"-2.1875") using the supplied side-mount brackets. This insulated bracket and external shaft system also helps to reduce electrical noise inherent in older vehicles.

Available Installation Kits: The included U Bracket allows for under dash mounting options and the unit can be mounted virtually anywhere due to its small 4.075" wide x 6.575" deep x 2.015" tall footprint. Advanced installers can even unscrew the Model One's faceplate and adjust its cant/angle to allow for even more customization. There are multiple vehicle specific faceplate & knob kits available (sold separately), as well as an universal faceplate that fits the Model One which allows you to use the integrated break away tabs to modify all aspects of height & width of the plate, and even drill in your own shaft holes to fit virtually any car. This radio is a true problem solver for tough to fit applications due to its unique bracket system combined with small mounting size. The following Installation Kits are available.

Note: The Retro Sound One does not come with a universal mounting bracket or shaft-knobs. A universal mounting kit or vehicle specific mounting kit will be needed for installation.

LCD Display: The Retro Sound Model One features an LCD display with a digital read-out. The unit's LCD display offers an enhanced viewing angle and is daylight compatible. The LCD display will display clock, tuner or track information. The unit will even display MP3/WMA track names.

Amplifier: The Model One is equipped with a 22 watts x 4-channel RMS/60 watts x 4-channel Peak amplifier.

Preamp Outputs: The universal shaft-style receiver has two pair of 2.5-volt preamp outputs (Front and Rear). Each preamp output is connected to the unit's rear-chassis by a 6" pigtail.

Sound Adjustments: The Retrosound Model One has many sound adjustments modes to help you tailor the radio to your audio preference. You can choose to adjust the following settings.

  • DSP: You can adjust the unit's DSP modes to Flat, Classic, Pop, Rock, or Off.
  • Bass: The Bass adjustment function allows you to boost or cut the low frequencies from -6 to +6.
  • Treble: The Treble adjustment function allows you to boost or cut the high frequencies from -6 to +6.
  • Balance: The Balance adjustment function allows you to adjust or pan the stereo sound from the left or right; this is helpful to compensate for the position of the driver in relation to the speaker locations. Adjustment range is 0 to 12.
  • Fader: The Fader Control allows you to fade the sound from the front pair of speaker to your rear pair of speakers. Adjustment range is 0 to 12.
  • Loudness: This function boosts bass and treble at low listening volume (this feature should be turned off at higher volumes).

Audible Confirmation: You can turn the units audible confirmation (beep tone) On or Off.

AM/FM Tuner: The Model One features a built-in AM/FM digital tuner. The unit's tuner features 3 FM bands and 2 AM bands. A total of 30 AM/FM presets can be stored manually or automatically. The Retrosound Model One has the capability to receive FM broadcasts frequencies in other countries. This unit's tuner can be set to USA or European tuning.

USB Port: The Retrosound Model One features a rear panel USB type-A port connected by a 10' pigtail, so you can plug in your USB flash/thumb drive (up to 8GB). Once you've connected your USB flash/thumb drive, the Model One will find your songs instantly and automatically start playing them. You will be able to control basic playback functions of your music files such as Play, Pause, Skip Track, Intro Scan, Repeat Track and Random. This unit supports the following music files via a USB flash/thumb drive in format FAT and FAT32 - MP3 (128 kbps or more recommended)) and WMA (64 kbps or more recommended). The unit can recognize a maximum of 999 songs/files (files will be read in order of creation and not alphabetically or numerically). The Model One also support MP3/WMA song information. This function allows you to view the track name, album, and artist information.

Note: Files with copy right protection and files encoded using Apple Lossless Encoder are not playable.

Two Auxiliary Inputs: The universal shaft-style receiver features a front panel 3.5mm auxiliary input and a rear-panel stereo RCA auxiliary input for connecting a portable external audio source such as a MP3 player or portable CD player. The unit's auxiliary inputs support any portable unit with an analog stereo 3.5mm headphone jack output or stereo RCA output. No audio cable is supplied with this unit.

Note: The two auxiliary inputs operate off of the same circuit so sources connected to these auxiliary inputs cannot be played simultaneously.

Remote Control: The headunit comes supplied with a full-function 21 key IR wireless remote control. The remote will operate the same functions as the Model One's control knobs and front-panel buttons. The remote is intended for use when you are mounting the radio in a location where it is hard to reach but the IR receiver is still visible. The remote is also needed when mounting the radio in a remote location which is hidden to keep your vehicle's factory integrity. You will need the optional 94" IR sensor cable (068RSIRCBL, sold separately) so the headunit can receive IR remote commands from the supplied wireless remote.

Retro Radio installation was great

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I recently ripped out a piece of junk aftermarket radio from my 1969 Mustang. Do not waste your time with any other aftermarket radio. Call Crutchfield and get hooked up with a Retro Radio, its wonderful.

When I then called Crutchfield, within minutes, I spoke with a very knowledgeable and helpful sales associate. I quickly confirmed that the radio I wanted was a Retro Radio. You absolutely cannot find a radio that is more flexible when installing it in a vintage vehicle.

Everything you would need came in the shipment - they even included metal knobs to match the ones used in the original 69 Mustang. This is my 6th radio installation in older mustangs. This is the only radio that I will use when I restore my next car. If you want a straight forward, easy install, you need this radio. Keith

My Bug with Retrosound

Written By John, Kenosha, Wisconsin on Thursday, June 11, 2009

I installed one of the first generation units last year in my Mustang and love it, however I discovered a few months ago that Crutchfield started selling a new version of that radio with a chrome face and they moved the USB to the rear! The weather was warming up a few weeks ago and I had my wife order me a chrome unit for my VW. This radio is now installed in my 69 Bug, has a really cool plate, wicked metal knobs, fits perfectly, and I can hide my flash drive in the glove box.I have to say that this company has raised the bar even further, my last radio I bought came with plastic knobs, I emailed them in January and was able to buy new gorgeous all metal knobs for my Mustang. This is the only radio that I know of, that currently can fit directly into my year range of VW, and its pretty easy to install. The brackets, like my Mustang take some work to get the hang of installing correctly, I went to the company's install gallery to get some pointers from other customer's installs-no problem, got some really good ideas, did the install last Sunday and wow, I've been having a great time, this looks incredible, like my mustang, I did not have to cut the dash, the company's service is top notch, and crutchfield got this to me quickly. In today's iffy economy, value and service seem to be making a major comeback, thank you to both of you wonderful companies, you really know how to make customers happy! Happy loyal customer, in Kenosha, John

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

Very nice unit considering the choices. Unit went into my customer 74 Jaguar E12. Very rare and expensive car and it needed a nice unit. All the features are great and deffently user friendly. My only complant is it only has a basic 3 band EQ. A 7 band adjustable would make it just over the top. Great buy and very good qality in the construction.
