VWKPB Kick Panel Enclosures

You have options

Old VW Beetles are cool vehicles but they weren't designed for great sound. It's particularly hard to find a good spot for aftermarket speakers, but now RetroSound offers a neat solution — install their VWKPB enclosures in your Beetle's kick panels and start rocking out.

Great sound in a bug

The package includes two ABS plastic enclosures and a set of RetroSound's R-652N 6-3/4" speakers. Each enclosure holds a RetroSound speaker, angled up toward your ears to create a more powerful stereo image. These speakers will work well with a factory or aftermarket radio, but they handle up to 50 watts RMS so they'll be very happy with an outboard amplifier.

Compact, paintable enclosures

The R652N speakers have a mounting depth of less than 1-3/4", so these enclosures don't take up a lot of space. You can paint the enclosures to match your VW's interior, and each enclosure already has a cutout for the RetroSound speaker, so they'll just pop right in. These enclosures fit in 1949-71 standard Beetles; they will not work in Beetles equipped with a bamboo tray, Beetle convertibles, or Super Beetles.

Product Highlights:

  • ABS plastic kick panel enclosures with precut speaker openings
  • includes a pair of R-652N 6-3/4" speakers
  • speakers are angled up for stronger image
  • enclosures can be painted
  • power handling up to 50 watts RMS
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Great Fit

1970 Volkswagen Beetle
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Panels are an awesome fit to my 1970 Beetle Coup. Minimum modifications needed and the carpet previously lining the kick panels covers the speaker panels fairly well (you can use some of the carpet you cut out for the speaker face to add to the shortage of carpet up top with some careful planning/cutting). Speakers work but are not the very best sound, but good enough. I think a bit of Dynomat may be in order as least above the engine compartment.

Pros: Great Fit, looks clean and minimal alterations needed.

Cons: Speakers are so-so.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kick panels are made of ABS Plastic. Only time will tell if they hold up. Just to make sure there was no rattling, I used some peel and stick insulating material to the back of the panels. The panels do not fit the contour of the body exactly, but the self-tapping screws seem to hold it down okay. The clips that hold the speaker in place are less than desirable quality and the screws that come with them are unnecessarily long and are just a little skinny to get a good grip on the clips. I highly recommend using some wider and shorter screws. Also, it is best to mount the speaker before screwing the panel to the car body. The 6 3/4" speakers that come with this unit are so-so at best when paired with the head unit. I can't tell you what they sound like on another system. The Retrosound Zuma that I paired these with has only factory preset EQs or you can turn DSP OFF and have only Bass and Treble controls.

Pros: If you do not feel like making your own kick panels, this is one of the only options. They also come wit Retrosound 6 3/4" speakers as part of the kit. Speakers mount and are directed at the front cab passengers.

Cons: ABS Plastic may or may not crack over time. Speakers, when paired with the Retrosound Zuma Radio are so-so.

Kick Panel Brackets: The VWKPB package includes a pair of RetroSound R-652N 6-3/4" speakers and brackets to mount them in the kick panel location of select 1949 to 1971 Volkswagen Beetles. The diameter of the pre-cut openings in the brackets is 6-3/4 inches and they can be painted to match your interior.

Note: Please confirm compatibility using the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector. These kick panels will not work with VW Beetles equipped with a bamboo tray, Super Beetles, or Convertibles.

Woofer: The speakers feature rigid pulp composite cone woofers with Santoprene surrounds. The woofers use Neodymium magnets to achieve their shallow depth.

Tweeters: The tweeters are low profile Mylar domes.
