Dual

Our take on the Dual XDVD8181

Dual brings you an in-dash multimedia DVD player with high performance and options galore. The XDVD8181 features a 7" LCD screen with touch controls on its motorized face. You can check out your favorite movies on DVD when the car is parked, or you can keep your passengers in back happy with additional video monitors connected to the two composite video outputs. When the screen's retracted, you can keep track of what's playing with the secondary dot matrix display.

You can spin your favorite burned CDs and DVDs in Dual's player, including rewritable discs. And don't forget about your stored MP3 and WMA files on CD or DVD — the XDVD8181 will play those as well. You can store hours of music on either format and keep the music rolling, even on the longest journey.

For portable MP3 player owners, Dual eases the frustration of getting connected to your car's stereo. They've included their patented iPlug™, which connects your MP3 player or iPod® directly to the XDVD8181 for maximum fidelity. A 39" cord allows you to mount the iPlug in a convenient spot so you can plug in without getting tangled up in wires.

You'll get proper sound when you travel with Dual in the dash. The XDVD8181 has ten preset sound curves to fit your desires, while three pairs of preamp outputs make it a little easier to add outboard amps to your system. The premium digital-to-analog converter will make sure everything sounds great, no matter what the source.

Dual doesn't skimp on extras with the XDVD8181. You can add a video game console or videocassette player with the video input. You'll even find a rear camera input for safety if you drive a larger vehicle. A wireless remote control keeps you in command from anywhere inside the car.

The resolution of the display is 480 x 234 and a total of 336,960 pixels. The screen has a 120° horizontal viewing angle (60° left or right), and a 90° vertical viewing angle (30° up and 60° down). In addition to the 7" video monitor, the unit has a small secondary dot matrix display for system information while the monitor is closed.

Display Angle Adjustment: You can adjust the display's angle for better visibility. The display tilts forward to 40° and backward to 120°, allowing you to choose one of 12 tilt positions. You can set up to 6 display angles in preset memory.

Display Brightness: You can adjust the brightness of the display from 0 to +20.

Video Lockout: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the supplied yellow/blue wire must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

Anti-theft Code: The unit has an anti-theft function that is protected by a 4-digit passcode. When the anti-theft function is activated, the passcode will need to be entered to unlock the system when the unit is disconnected, then reconnected to battery power.

5-Channel Audio Preamp Outputs: This unit has five audio preamp outputs: front left and right, rear left and right, and subwoofer. Note: If you are connecting a subwoofer amplifier requiring stereo inputs, you will need to connect a "Y" adapter to the mono subwoofer output.

Disc Playback

MP3/WMA Playback: The XDVD8181 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. The files must be recorded in ISO 9660 Level 1 or 2, Yellow Book Mode 1 or Mode 2 Form 1, or Joliet formats. Compatible bit rates are 40 to 320 kbps for MP3, and 40-192 kbps for WMA. Recorded discs can have up to 1500 files and 8 folder levels.

Electronic Skip Protection: This unit is equipped with a high-speed flash memory buffer for skip resistant playback. This ESP offers skip protection for DVD, CD, MP3, and WMA discs.

Video Format: The unit can be set to NTSC or PAL compatibility. When set to Auto, the system will detect NTSC or PAL formats and switch to the appropriate mode.

Multi-Angle Display: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Video Adjustments: While in video playback, Aux-in, or Camera mode, you can adjust the picture brightness, contrast, sharpness, color, and tint from 0 to +20.

Fast Forward/Fast Reverse: When playing a DVD, there are four fast-play speeds in both directions (2x, 4x, 8x, and 20x).

Repeat Play: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter or title. When playing a Video CD, you can repeat the current track. For MP3/WMA, you can repeat the current file or folder. A-B Repeat allows you to repeat any portion of a DVD.

AV Connections

iPlug: This unit features an iPlug, a 3.25' interface cable that allows you to listen to any portable music player equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Aux Input: The Aux input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an RCA composite video jack, allowing you to connect external A/V equipment to this head unit.

Video Out 1 & 2: These RCA composite video jacks allow you add external monitors.

Camera Input: This RCA composite video jack allows you connect an optional rear view camera. The head unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image when a rear camera is installed on your vehicle. When the shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera. The camera image can be set to normal or a reverse image.

For the price, an excellent in dash dvd player

Written By Justin, Ephrata, PA on Wednesday, July 22, 2009

I got this because it was the cheapest here on crutchfield and because of
all the good reviews on it. It also looks very nice. I got it today and
installed it myself...I've only done this once before but this time seemed so
much easier with all the detailed instructions that crutchfield gives along
free. I got it installed, but like another reviewer said, you need to stick it
out about an inch for the other din ring to fit on, because it won't go past
your dashboard. Not a huge deal, but something to keep in mind. You
need the parking brake wire attached and it never tells you where it's
supposed to go in the manuals and such. So I found a website that said
that this wire needs to be attached to the back of the radio. So I did that,
but I didn't read the next line in the post. You have to attach it to a black
ground wire, not the metal on the back of the radio. So much disappointed,
now I have to take apart my entire dash and change the position of that
wire, because the DVD Player won't play if you don't attach that parking
brake wire right. So I am a little mad, but that is my fault mostly for not
reading it far enough. I also have to make the indash dvd player come out
a little more also, so I have to make some revisions. I guess I am just an
inpatient person and I wanted to check it out.

Started out fine

Written By Wes, Alabama on Friday, November 21, 2008

I purchased this ummm about a year ago and the first few months everything was fine until the volume knob fell off, the whole unit itself comes out of the dash from time to time when i accelerate, and the screen got stuck when coming out. needless to say i took this out my car and put the stock one back in. would not recommend this to anyone. if you're on a budget just wait a little longer and save for something else

Want to Watch DVD's for a Couple Months?

Written By tower, Houston, TX on Friday, November 21, 2008

As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for." I admit the price is outstanding for a 7" touchscreen, but the quality reflects the price. These Dual units are no different than Valor -- weak built-in amp, minimal audio options, poor touchscreen response, and they are notorious for the CD motor going bad. If you're looking for sound quality, this isn't the radio for you. If you're looking for longevity, this isn't the one. If you want to say "I have a touchscreen in my car" without breaking the bank... Well, try your luck.

I've had it for 2 years now and it works fine, i love this unit! after about a year of owning it it stopped taking CDs / dvds but just spend about 30min of your time and it'll be fixed like new.

BE VERY AFRAID!

Written By gingerbreadpimp, Dallas, GA on Tuesday, July 08, 2008

Stay away from this one! Every time I turn off the vehicle, my presets
disappear. Also the volume knob stopped working. Touching the volume
knob in the slightest drives the volume up to the maximum and it can't be
turned back down. I can only change the volume with the remote. Most
recently, it stopped taking disks. They go in half way and it spits them back
out.
