Our take on the Dual XDVD8285

Dual's XDVD8285 in-dash multimedia DVD player will bring high performance and options galore to the double-sized dash opening in your vehicle. This versatile player combines a 6.5" screen, touchscreen controls, playback of music and video from disc or portable device, and Bluetooth® compatibility with your cellular phone.

Video to go
Connect a backseat video screen and a set of wireless headphones to the audio/video outputs — your rear passengers can watch movies, while you play the radio or your portable music player up front. While the car is parked, you can view movies on the screen or turn the screen into a slideshow for your digital photographs. The multi-zone remote lets you and your passengers control all the action.

Hands-free for convenience
Bluetooth wireless technology allows you to talk hands-free with the XDVD8285 and your Bluetooth phone, leaving the hassles of unsafe driving behind. You can navigate important phone menu functions from the screen with ease, including dialing and answering calls while your phone is safely tucked away. A built-in microphone means no installation hassles.

Listen how you want to
Listening options are never an issue with this versatile stereo. The A/V iPlug™ adapter offers additional audio and video inputs plus a dedicated iPod® connection — install the A/V iPlug in a handy place in your car so you can plug in your portables without messy wires everywhere.

You can play burned CDs or DVDs, even discs loaded with MP3 or WMA files, for hours of musical enjoyment — up to 1000 files on a recorded DVD. The built-in SD card slot lets you load up a memory card with your favorite digital tracks or photos and bring the fun on the road with you.

The XDVD8285 will make music and movies sound great in your car. With ten tone presets, you're sure to find a setting that works for you. The built-in amplifier delivers plenty of power to your front and rear speakers, and includes a fifth channel to drive a center channel speaker. With included Dolby® Digital and Pro Logic II® decoding, you can hook up your system to an amplified subwoofer and surround yourself with high-impact home theater sound.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

The resolution of the display is 480 x 234 for a total of 280,800 pixels. The screen has a 120° horizontal viewing angle (60° left or right), and a 95° vertical viewing angle (40° up and 55° down). The display is motorized and slides down and out to reveal the disc slot and SD card slot.

Display Angle Adjustment: You can adjust the display's vertical angle for better visibility. There are 6 display angles to choose from.

Brightness Adjustment: You can adjust the display brightness from 0 to +20.

Audio/Video iPlug: This unit features the audio/video iPlug, a 6.75' interface cable that allows you to listen to any portable music, video, or multimedia player equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack or audio/video RCA output. You can connect an iPod to the iPlug using the supplied adapter cable. Note: The special iPod cable can be connected to the head unit through the iPlug or through a dedicated iPod jack on the rear panel.

MP3/WMA Playback: The XDVD8285 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. The files must be recorded in ISO 9660 Level 1 or 2, Yellow Book Mode 1 or Mode 2 Form 1, or Joliet formats. Compatible bit rates are 40 to 320 kbps for MP3, and 40-192 kbps for WMA. Recorded discs can have up to 1500 files and 8 folder levels.

SD Card Slot: Just below the DVD/CD slot is a slot for SD (Secure Digital) memory cards for playing MP3 or WMA files. Playback functions include file skip, fast forward (2x, 4x, 8x, 20x), file repeat, folder repeat, file random play, and direct file select.

Multi-Zone Capability: Independent sources can be played simultaneously on the unit. In addition to the main source output from the front and rear channels, you can select an alternate source to be output through dedicated multi-zone preamp outputs for headrest monitors, overhead monitors, etc. Sources that can be selected as the multi-zone source include CD/DVD, rear camera, auxiliary a/v input, or SD card.

Relative Volume Gain: The gain settings allow you to customize the relative volume of the various modes to compensate for volume differences between the sources. The range is adjustable between -7 and +7, with 0 being the reference point. Relative volume can be set for AM/FM, DVD, iPod, Bluetooth, XM, Aux In, and SD Card.

Electronic Skip Protection: This unit is equipped with a high-speed flash memory buffer for skip resistant playback. This ESP offers skip protection for DVD, CD, MP3, and WMA discs.

Rear View Camera Input: The head unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image when a rear camera is installed on your vehicle. When the shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera. In the menu, you can switch the image from Normal to Reverse.

DVD/Video CD Features

Video Lockout: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the supplied yellow/blue wire must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged and disengaged in a preset sequence.

Multi-Angle Display: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Preamp Outputs: The XDVD8285 has 6 channels of preamp outputs: front L/R, rear L/R, center, and subwoofer. If you want 6-channel theater-style sound, you can hook up the appropriate external amplifiers and speakers to the front, rear, center, and subwoofer preamp outputs. When the unit is in 6-channel mode, you can independently adjust the level of each speaker.

Speaker Outputs: The unit has 5 speaker outputs: front L/R, rear L/R, and center.

Selectable Bass/Treble Center Frequencies: You can set the center frequency for both the bass and treble effects. The bass can be set to 60, 80, 100, 130, 150, or 200 Hz. The treble can be set to 10, 12.5, 15, and 17kHz.

Subwoofer Low Pass Filter/Q Factor: The cutoff frequency for the subwoofer output's low pass filter can be set to 80, 120, or 160Hz. The Q Factor can be set to 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0.

Surround Mode: You can choose between full 6-channel output or a downmixed 2-channel mode. Surround mode options include Pro Logic, PL II Matrix, PL II Movie, and PL II Music.

Surround Setup: You can input the size and presence of each speaker in your sound system by entering "Large" or "Small" for Front left/right, and "Large," "Small," or "None" for Rear left/right and Center. For the Subwoofer, you can enter "Present" or "None." You can select "Large" for speakers that give a full-range output. When "Small" is selected, it will activate a high-pass filter for those speakers.

Dynamic Range Control: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of On or Off.

Pink Noise Generator: The built-in pink noise generator helps you set the relative speaker levels for multi-channel playback. You can play pink noise through the left front, right front, left rear, and right rear.

Center/Rear Delay: You can adjust the time difference between the center and the front speakers to create a time delay between 1 and 5 milliseconds to produce a more accurate audio effect. You can also adjust the time difference between the rear and front speakers between 3 and 15 milliseconds.

Fast Forward/Fast Reverse: When playing a DVD, there are four fast-play speeds in both directions (2x, 4x, 8x, and 20x).

Repeat Play: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter or title. When playing a Video CD, you can repeat the current track. For MP3/WMA, you can repeat the current file or folder. A-B Repeat allows you to repeat any portion of a DVD.

Zoom Mode: Using the remote control, you can change the magnification of the image from normal to 1 to 2 to 3 to 4. While the image is enlarged, you can pan the screen up, down, left, and right.

External Device Controls

iPod Compatibility: Most iPods from 3rd generation to 5th generation, equipped with the proprietary dock connector, can be connected to and controlled by the head unit (see list below for firmware versions, the iPod Shuffle is not compatible because it has no dock connector). When the iPod is connected, it can be controlled via the touch-screen and rotary dial. The screen displays all information including playlists, artists, albums, and songs. You can also view pictures and videos from 5th Generation iPods. In addition, your iPod will charge while connected and the system is turned on. The following specific iPods are compatible with this unit.

  • 3rd Generation iPod: version 2.3
  • 4th Generation iPod: version 3.11
  • 5th Generation iPod: version 1.1.2
  • iPod Photo: version 1.2.1
  • iPod Mini: version 1.4.1
  • iPod Nano: version 1.2.0

At this time the iPod classic (80/120/160GB), generation nano (3rd/4th), iPod touch (1st/2nd generation), and iPhone/iPhone3G are not supported.

XM Satellite Ready: The XDVD8285 is XM Satellite Radio ready, and has a direct input for the Terk XMD1000 XMDirect satellite receiver (209XMD1000). You can set up to 36 XM channels in presets over 3 bands. In addition to the tuner, a subscription to XM Satellite Radio is required to listen to XM.

not bad for the money

Written By camoto, Plymouth, MA on Tuesday, March 10, 2009

This unit works pretty well. I have some issues with iPod Playlists that are larger than 1000 songs. Also, you can't just play "all songs" you have to either pick an artist, album or playlist for iPod play. This is fine until you make a larger playlist. Sometimes the display locks up when doing so, the music still plays but you lose ability to change songs. DVD operation is fine, and works as described in the book with the ebrake. The sound quality is good. Overall it's a good unit for the money. You could get better if you pay more, but if you aren't looking for anything crazy, this is fine.

So far so good.

Written By Ryan, Mississippi on Friday, December 26, 2008

Just added this head to my wifes 2004 Highlander. I must say that I was a bit hesistant after reading the other reviews. I haven't seen any of the issues mentioned so far. The video resolution look great. I was extremely impressed with the ease of the blue tooth adapter setup. My wife and I both have motorola cell phones and both connected with no trouble at all. My wifes phone is set to auto connect to the adapter when she gets in the vehicle.

The buttons on the unit are a bit small but with everything accessible by touch screen the button sizez really don't matter. Installation was fairly simple. The paper instructions sent by Crutchfield were dead on except on the location of the emergence brake wire (needed for the dvd display).
This is the first time I have had to call crutchfield for support. I was very impressed. Within 5 minute I was able to speak with someone and locate the brake wire.

All in all this is a pretty awesome unit especially for the price. There aren't very many units with the blue tooth and ipod adapters built in. With all that said I only had 2 cons to the unit. It lacked support to connect to existing Steering wheel controls and the emergency brake sequence is a bit much to enable the dvd. Other than that so far so good.

Thanks Crutchfield!!

Disappointed

Written By Brian, Ft Myers, FL on Tuesday, August 12, 2008

I must say I very disappointed with both this device and Crutchfield. I bought this back in 06/07. The 1st one I got didn't have the wiring harness and Crutchfield had to send out another device. Over the following year I had a variety of different issues. Now only 2 months outside the warranty period this unit will not load any type of disc. I spoke with both Crutchfield and Dual and they think it is a mechanical issue and that the device needs to be replaced. Crutchfield says there is nothing they can do since it is outside of the warranty period and Dual says they won't replace it, but will sell me a replacement for $300. So now I have a DVD headunit that can't play DVD's. I know it is outside the warranty period, but we are only talking 2 months and I really never had 1 month with no issues what so ever. I thought since I paid this much for this device that it would be better quality, I guess I was wrong. At this point I will not spend another $300 to get another questionable product. I will probably just buy another type, maybe a Kenwood or Alpine.

Here is a summary of the issues I had:

Bluetooth device is unusable.
iPod Interface does not work properly.
CD / DVD player started not accepting disks into the chassis.

Is there anything less than a 1 star rating?

Not Worth the trouble

Written By Elton, Jasper, Texas on Saturday, August 02, 2008

I have had nothing but trouble. The unit locked up on a CD and when I ejected the CD the unit put a deep cratch across the disk. Completly ruining the CD. When I called Crutchfield I was told to call the manufacturer. Dual did send me a new unit, it took about two months. The new unit has a problem with the Blue Tooth. The people on the other end of the call can bearly hear me. I can hang up and call back not using the blue tooth feature and the person on the other end can hear me with no trouble. So back to the manufacturer again and another two months.
Also this unit does not have a dimmer feature or night time screen, it does have a black out screen but regular screen will pop back on as soon as you touch it or when you get a call. Sometimes the regular screen would reappear with out being prompted.
I wish I would have spent a little more for a better unit.

Read this first!

Written By Daryl, Boston Area on Monday, January 28, 2008

This reciever is does the following pretty well: CD / MP3 Music Disc, FM Radio (great sensitivity), Video playback from DVD or iPod, when it wants to work that is. It sounds a bit better than my stock head unit did (2003 Subaru Forester) I think Subaru uses an Eclipse head unit, which was also good. Sound quality is good by comparison, volume is good, not using any external amps, just the head unit. Interface is simple to use and easy enough to figure out without reading the whole manual. I have had a couple of problems with the unit and have tried twice emailing the manufactuer with no response whatsoever. The first problem is that even when following the directions on the safety lead, so that you need the e-brake on to watch video on the head unit screen, I could only make it work for a few seconds. Then it came up and said that message about, please apply the parking brake to view video. Then I played with the connector, no luck, then just tried grounding it out, that worked for a nano-second, then the same pesky message. So, until Dual decides to write me back or I take the time to call thier tech-support, I can't make use of that beautiful screen to watch any video. Second issue is with the iPod control. It's sweet that it includes the actual iPod interface. After owning the unit for a few months, it decided to go haywire on me with my iPod music selection. When I scroll through, pick an artist and tell it play, it seems to randomly select a different artist alltogether and begin to play that. For example, on my way home tonight, I scrolled through the available music on my iPod using the on screen display (while safely stopped at a traffic light, of course) and I select, Wu Tang Clan, that's what I was in the mood for and that's why I selected it. Instead it starts playing some song by Brian McNight, which is kind of lovey soul sort of blues type of music. I don't even know how that got on my iPod, but anyways. So I figure, what the heck man? I try it again, same thing. I unplug the iPod and turn off and on the head unit, same thing! I tried several different artist that I wanted to listen to, same thing, it selects a different artist entirely. Very frustrating, especially when you use the iPod all of the time that I'm in my car! I patiently await Duals response on this one. If you don't use an iPod with it, it's a great system for short money, but they iPod thing just kills me, come on. I'm buying something different, I need my iPod to work right consistently.

Best bang for a buck

Written By Oleg, New York, NY on Wednesday, January 02, 2008

This is an excellent product. Installation in my Infiniti G35x was easy and straightforward. The sound improved tremendously over the stock unit. XM and IPod controls are great. It does take time to scroll through thousands and thousands of songs on the IPod but playlists are making it a lot easier. Along with that Author, or Album option makes finding songs on IPod faster as well. This is a solid unit and has a lot more features built in, like bluetooth, ipod control and xm control. The only add-on required is xmd1000 xm radio tuner as oppose to Pioneer, Kenwood or alpine units where you have to buy Bluetooth, XM tuner and Ipod controller separately.
All in all if you want a solid head unit with the most features built in and moderately priced - XDVD8285 is the way to go.

So many features you'd think it would do one of them well

Written By robdew, Lawrence, KS on Monday, October 22, 2007

Does not display the full iPod menus. Makes it nearly impossible to navigate content without sophisticated playlists. Despite the large screen, displays a paltry amount of info during navigation and playback. No way to quickly scroll through long lists (including the volume knob). The most absurd design problem was that to watch iPod video, you must revert back to using the iPod instead of the player to control the interface. Starts songs over from the beginning when turned off - unusable for podcasts, audiobooks.

Plagued by inconsistent unresponsive controls, to the point that they are dangerous to operate while driving. Still not sure when I am supposed to use the Mode vs. the Menu buttons. To scroll down in the track list you press the up *arrow* on the faceplate?! Some controls such as numeric keypad work in some contexts but mysteriously not in others. Touchpad responsiveness is so bad enough that mistakenly pressing buttons twice happens frequently. Sorts songs improperly by not disregarding words like a and the. None of the lists wrap around either.

In many cases I found it would not display the correct name of the iPod track it was currently playing, and it would frequently get into a mode during shuffle where it would skip about 50% of the tracks instead of playing them.

The Bluetooth worked well with my phone, except that the touchscreen keypad was very hard to dial with.

XDVD8285

Written By Jake, Spfld, IL on Friday, August 10, 2007

Unit is superb and looks sharp in my 04 Ford F150.

Integrated bluetooth sounds great through the speakers, on the other end, I was asked if I was on a speakerphone, but that's understandable at 65mph down the road and a dual exhaust on the truck.

iPlug connection works great, found a great looking custom spot to install it, and this will hook up to any mp3 player with a earphone jack and to a iPood player if you have one, also the 3 composite hook ups make for a nice touch especially if I want to view a camcorder or other av source.

The mp3 playback is awesome, I made a mp3 disc up on DVD and managed a whopping 1,250 songs to keep me listening for months. Haven't tried out the SD card capabilities as of yet, but plan to.

DVD playback looks nice, sharp screen, nothing too dark or too bright that I can't fine tune.

Navigation through the menus, is super easy and the layout looks great, the touchscreen is spot on and easy enough to read.

Overall, for not going all out with the fanciest of brands, this unit is very sharp, looks great, works great, I have no complaints whatsoever. Not sure about the rearview camera just yet cause I haven't purchased it yet, but definately a feature I wanna try out soon.

Crutchfield was spot on with all the installation and instructions, only problem I had was that the screws for the mounting bracket were too short and couldn't reach the side holes of the unit so I had to purchase longer screws to work, besides that, everything went in flawless. There is a small gap around the unit, but I think I can find some type of rubber gasket to fill it in and make it look unnoticeable.

previous to my purchace, I had heard a great deal about Dual's eh, not so impressive quality...thankfully I was proven wrong.

first off I could not resist the incredible list of features this unit has to offer. from sd reader to direct ipod controls, it has it all! and not only that, it is all EXTREMELY USER FRIENDLY, and that is very important when you want to switch from cd to ipod going 70mph down the road. on other systems of greater name value, you'd be paying more than the retail of this unit for JUST dvd functionality and maybe a simple audio aux jack.

I'm no tech guru, but I know quality sound when I hear it, and frankly this unit made my very bad stock speakers sound great, even without distortion at his volume with the bass turned up. very nice.

in short, if you want an AWESOME unit for an awesome price, this is it. I've had no problems with it at all.
