Dual X2DMA400

Overview

Our take on the Dual X2DMA400

Nothing puny about this display
Big dial, big buttons, big letters on the display — you won't have to squint at the X2DMA400 CD receiver from your place in the driver's seat. It fills your double-DIN (4" tall) dash opening and gives you lots of ways to play your favorite tunes.

Nothing puny about this display

Bring all your music
Are you an iPod® lover? Satellite radio fan? Or do you prefer storing your tunes on a memory card or portable thumb drive? Dual has you covered no matter how you like to play music in your car. Plug in your iPod or iPhone® to the front-panel USB slot, and you can access your iTunes™ library while you charge your player. You can slide in a USB thumb drive loaded with digital tunes, and you can even put your files on an SD™ card and pop it into the front-panel slot.

Add SiriusXM Satellite Radio
SiriusXM's compact tuner (not included) not only brings more than 100 channels of entertainment to your dash, but also some features found in their Dock & Play radios. You can pause, rewind, and replay live programming, plus get a heads up when your favorite team or artist is coming on another channel. You'll need a subscription and the tuner, of course.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Dual stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the X2DMA400, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Great product especially for the price

Honestly, I was not expecting this unit to be as good as it was. This is one of the few times where I felt totally satisfied that I made a great purchase. Sound quality was very good, very loud and if anything, exposed the limitations of my oldish Toyota XLE factory speakers. This unit has a ton of front and rear inputs - USB/iPhone, SD card, Aux. Charging my iPhone is a big ++. The programming menus offer a long array of options and thoughtful touches (i.e. option to leave clock showing when unit is off). Have not had the unit long enough to access its longevity, but initial impression is a solid thumbs up. If you want an inexpensive unit without giving up any features, this is the one! Crutchfield's installation kit + tech support made it easy, even replacing a factory unit that had a remote amplifier.

Pros: Price Features Numerous settings Connection options

Cons: No display color selection. Initial read of IPhone/IPod can take a while before music starts playing.

Just got this unit installed and it seems to be a good upgrade over the stock unit. I read some reviews that said the clock was not constantly displayed on the screen. I was happy to see the clock remain on during all modes. Basic install. Not too difficult at all. It has all the features of the high end units but a low price. It has good reception.

Pros: Large display. Aux inputs. SD and usb inputs.

Novice installer but happily surprised by the relative ease that this product fit a 2005 Focus sedan with a malfunctioning factory radio. Everything I needed to adapt to the car was included and the directions were very helpful. This went on my son's car but my wife was so impressed with it that now she wants me to change out her factory radio too.

Pros: Ease of installation and attention to detail. Plays well-looks good.

    Cons: None to report.

Hooked it up with a Sirius adapter for an extra $30 and Easy Installation. Biggest negative is that it will not display the clock all the time. You have a choice of song title or clock not both

Pros: Great directions from Crutchfield. Strongly recommend them.

Cons: You get use to having the clock on all the time but with this radio, you need toggle switch the display. But when the clock is shown you do not see the song or channel

used this radio to replace a stock 2006 kia sedona radio. the stock radio would not pick up am channels at all but the fm channels came in fine the analog dials were defective leading to replacement. The install of this radio was straight forward, but the fm channels drift in and out. I have since replace the stock antennae with a whip style on the passenger side. the am channels are still fine a nd the fm comes in better but still fades in and out. I and now looking at radio's with the lowest fm sensitivty numbers as my wife primarily listens to the radio.

    Pros: easy install and price

Cons: fm channels drift in and out

I bought this unit and it works fantastic! I have read some negative reviews about it but i guess those that complain about it overheating did not buy the installation gear that helps you regulate the output. Mine so far sounds and works great!

Pros: Easy to install and great sound

Cons: Changing the settings takes learning the operations in the manual or watching the video available on the web otherwise it is not too easy to simply guess how to change settings.

I ordered this radio a few months ago as a gift for my mother. The radio looked and worked great in her 2008 Subaru Impreza. So when my son wanted a new radio for his much older 1990 Acura Integra, I thought I'd order the same radio since I'd had such good luck before. Unfortunately, (despite the Crutchfield sizing chart), the radio was too large and did not fit in the mounting bracket supplied by Crutchfield or the opening in the vehicle. I called Crutchfield and ended up sending the radio back. So as to not have to go through this experience again, I think I'll stick with a single DIN radio next time around. After speaking with the Crutchfield tech, the only thing he could come up with was that this particular radio was a bit large than other Double DIN radios. What's the point of having a standard size if it's not standard. Oh well...

Pros: Just to be clear, I'm not trashing the radio as it works fine in a newer vehicle. Just disappointed it did not work/fit in my son's older car. Still a good buy for the money.

So I got this as a present for myself to replace the factory radio.the sound went great with my 3 way kenwood speakers and integrated USB was a really practical feature. The one problem was also the killer; last week I had my phone charging with the USB and the speakers were giving a lot of feedback and ringing like never before with this receiver. My phone stopped charging, and i began to smell burning plastic, then my car started filling up with smoke... I immediately turned the power off and luckily it stopped. I pulled the unit and inspected my wiring; not one wire was loose, corroded, or shorted. So save yourself the hassle and get a better unit

    Pros: Sound

I was looking for a good but affordable double DIN unit for my 99 Honda Civic. This seemed to fit the bill. I ordered it with the Sirius XM tuner. The unit has decent power, not as full sounding as the Pioneer single DIN it replaced but what it lacked in punch it more than makes up in features. Love the ability to plug in my iphone (and it charges it too), great large vibrant display, controls provide good feedback, the screen scrolls so that you can read full titles. Reception on AM/FM could be better but not at all terrible. Satellite radio never fails me. I feel like I made a great purchase. The only thing I do not like is having to push SOURCE multiple times to go from one source to the other. Going from fm radio to satellite radio requires 4 or 5 clicks before it gets there, and if you press too fast you could easily skip it (there is some lag). I also think the build quality is respectable given its price point. In short I would buy this again for a daily driver, but probably not as a center piece to a showcase audio system.

Pros: Large, bright scrolling text display. USB charges my phone. Perfect fit in my 99 Civic. Great overall value. Bang for the buck.

Cons: Decent but not great build quality (quite reflective plasticy surface materials). Needs a more user-friendly SOURCE selection method.

cheap and easy to install but after 3 months the aux port started to go out. I thought it was the cord so i bought a new one but it didnt work either. The warrenty is over so i cant return it. It only plays out of the drivers side speakers. Has good sound and is easy to use but from what happend with mine and from what iv read with other peoples reviews is that it dosnt work for long. But you get what you pay for and in my case im just gonna have to save up for a nicer one thats more reliable.

Pros: easy install, easy to use, cheap

    Cons: not reliable, breaks

The Dual X2DMA400 is a super winner in my book.I'm an Audiophile, My experience in Car radios as follows, I've owned, 3 or 4 Kenwoods, Alpine, Sony and my Favorite back when they were made in Germany the Blaupuntk(after they move the operation to china they sunk). This is the first car stereo I've installed in 10 years. Let me say first off Crutchfield Make this stereo a breeze to install. They supply you with direction on how to take your faceplate of on the car, They show and give you the kit that fits your car so when its installed it look like it was installed at the factory. Crutchfield gives you the wiring harness so there's no running wire to the fuse box. Great job! Now the Dual X2DMA400. For $99.00 You can't go wrong with this radio. It post 19 watts RMS per channel not System Watts, Big difference. You don't need an amplifier unless you want the guy down the block to hear you. The sound is clear and when the bass and treble is turned all the way up I get minimal distortion and this baby is loud when cranked. That's Outstanding especially since the speakers are factory. I can wait to buy a couple 4 way or 3 way Pioneers if they stilll make them and install them. Some people give this 4 stars because the face on the Stereo dosn't change color....WHAT!..You do not buy a stereo because it looks good you buy it for sound. Period. The Dual X2DMA400 is one of the best Car Stereos for $99.00. For people who like Sound like 2 thieves This Dual is a steal. Buy it.

Pros: 1. 19 Watts RMS 2. Audio source increase, This allows you to increase the Volume from factory standards. 3.Sound Quality. This is Almost Old Blaupuntk Quality. Kicks Kenwoods Butt because the bass comes through and allows the treble to be heard with little distortion. Kicks Alpine butt because of price. 4. Price. When I bought this my mind said Who the heck is DUAL. I was not looking for high quality sound this puts out. 5. Ease of installation due to outstanding Crutchfield platform.

Cons: 1. You have to read directions on all the settings, So you do it right. 2. Connections. Make sure you wrap electrical tape to the plug going into the unit and the adapter plug Crutchfield gives you(IMPORTANT). The plug can come out when you install the stereo or fall out while driving this unfortunately happen the clasp did not grip well. 3.Wiring diagram There are wires you do not need on the adapter, Simple match the color coded wires and tape the ones that are not being used.

I have now had my deck in about a week. I love it, it looks great and kinda "factory" which is the look I prefer. I like that it is simple and easy to use. 2 complaints ( only one which has to deal with a piece of the product) 1. I don't like that it doesn't default to the clock showing when you turn it on. 2. When I first got the shipment in, the chime box that I over paid for was defective, however, it was very easy to contact Crutchfield and they had me one in the mail quick! overall. Great experience, and a product that I am still very satisfied with.

Pros: factory look, simple, sounds great, has a more expensive appeal to it then the price reflects.

Cons: Default clock dispaly, wish it had bluetooth ( not Crutchfields fault lol)

Wanted to update my factory 6-disc changer with a SiriusXM radio and iPod controls. I liked the somewhat-stock appearance of the Dual. Wasn't very familiar with the brand, but the reviews were decent. This was a very good purchase. It fit nicely, looks clean, and works great. Improved sound over the factory unit. This radio is definitely worth the money. Excellent buy.

Looks nice. Easy to use. Sounds decent. The iPod/USB port is nice and works. CD player broke almost immediately after the 60 day exchange policy. It's cheaply made and will break. If this happens, you have to jump through a bunch of hoops and wait forever to get it fixed. You get what you pay for. This radio is CHEAP. If price is more important that quality and reliability, this is the radio for you.

    Pros: Cheap

    Cons: Poor quality. Unreliable.

Great value for the $$. Installation was relatively straight forward - except don't forget to remove the two screws in the top of the unit before installing it like I did. Turns out these 2 screws stabilize the CD unit during shipping etc - so if you leave them in, CDs won't inject properly & it won't work. The unit fits very well into the non-navigation factory radio opening on the 01 Odyssey without need for an installation kit (I bought one, but didn't need it). Sound is excellent, better than the factory radio, and I did not replace the speakers (yet). Installed XM/Sirius radio at the same time - good time to do it when your have the dash apart forl the stereo installation. Controls for the stereo are pretty good, not very intuitive, but not complicated. Would be nice to be able to alter the color scheme, but not a big deal. Also when using XM, one has to toggle between the channel ID and the song's artist & title (so, as you switch channels you either see the artist/title, or you see the channel name, but not both) - I imagine Dual could improve the satellite radio display to avoid this. But, this unit was in my price range, it fits like a charm and I am very pleased with it.

Pros: Excellent fit, great sound clarity, and seems well made.

Cons: Lack of color options, and display is a little low-tech.

It is a very good head unit. I love the usb plug in, aux, and sd card capabilities. My only issue is when driving, sometimes it will randomly switch to CD mode. Which is really annoying when I am listening to music on my phone through aux, and sometimes it will do it multiple times in a row, but not very often. Overall, this is an excellent bargain of a product with great sound.

Pros: Great sound, great utility, good upgraded factory look, easy controls.

Cons: Changes source to cd randomly.

I received a defective unit that would not load a physical CD (mechanically broken). I was able to return this unit and have another shipped out in less than 4 minutes using the chat interface from Crutchfield customer service. Simply an amazing customer service experience that I talked about for days. Aside from the defective stereo, this stereo was nice. It was about what I was expecting for the price. The ability to load an SD card with 16GB of music is very nice, you can load some classic tunes and leave it in the stereo and connect your iPod for more dynamic tunes that you change more often. The SD card slot is not often found on other stereos, and I liked that. The iPod interface was ok, not great, but certainly usable. I like that you could choose to control the songs from the stereo or from the iPod. Used my Android device through the 8mm jack, and was able to stream Pandora (not natively) through both my Android phone and through my iPod (connected through the phone's hotspot). The price is low, and the stereo is fully featured with solid sound via my factory speakers. Unfortunately, the glossy plastic feels cheap and I preferred the clean lines and integrated look of the factory stereo, so I'm a bit biased. This unit was hard to read in the daytime and too bright for me during the night. In the end, I replaced it with another unit, but I wouldn't shy away from buying it if you're looking for a low cost stereo with tons of music source options.

Pros: Lots of music source options

Cons: Look and feel is low end. Text scrolling is clunky and unappealing.

Pros: Price, mp3 (CD and SD card) and ability to control iPod (USB) with stereo control buttons.

Purchased this because I was looking for a rather simple deck which offered USB/Ipod input as well as reading MP3 CD's, wouldn't break the bank or be overly flashy and still put out decent quality sound. I am no audiophile but wanted an acceptable sounding stereo in my ford pick up to go with the Polk 5x7 speakers I put in. Was disappointed to find no low/high pass filters to help with low end distortion and all but the simplest EQ with a simple "Bass" and "Treble" adjustments. It does blend nicely with the dash, and could almost pass for a very nice OEM unit, which is a plus for me. Unfortunately I'm really missing the low pass filter and have had a couple issues with the IPOD controls as noted in CONS. take note of the issues with CD player and ipod inputs. Mine requires frequent use of the reset button which also clears all eq and station presents and is not really mentioned in the owners manual. Very frustrating.

Pros: Looks simple but elegant Easy to use Nice sound despite a lack of EQ options and filters

Cons: No high or low pass filters (not a deal killer, especially at this price) **Lots of problems with IPOD input. Initially after install it would not play CD's or load my Ipod. Shipping screws had been removed and tech support suggested pushing the reset button (which was not mentioned in the owners manual trouble shooting). Problem fixed, until it happened again. Twice now I've had to "reset" the stereo which removes all presents both for radio stations and EQ settings....

('02 Hyundai Sante Fe)Great value for a double din unit. Easy to operate, everything is straight forward without studying the manual to figure how to use the unit. I have original, old factory speakers that are next on my upgrade list so I can't comment too much on sound quality. I got the entire install kit but still wasn't able to get the unit to fit cleanly. I must've had it out 6 times trying the different trim plates, modifying plates, adjusting mounting brakets until I had enough. It's okay and "IT IS WHAT IT IS". Also...no mention in the instructions or on the unit about removing the shipping screw on top of the unit that locks the CD carrier preventing CD's from loading. I like the wide range of sources I can play tunes from too. I made a mp3 disc of my most favorite albums and it hasn't left the changer yet! If I remember right... to my door in 3 days? I got the warranty too. You can forward your e-mail receipt to them and don't have to worry about saving it for 3 years. Buy it!

Pros: Value, versatility , ease of operation and the outputs. Sub control is nice!

Cons: In my case it was fit. I'm over it now.

This is a great product that works wonderfully, HOWEVER, I did have some trouble fitting it into my 97 Maxima. It did protrude slightly and pushed my plastic trim forward an inch or so. I was able to remedy this by screwing the trim in, so It looks great now, but it was a bit of work. The only other noticeable fault is that the ipod navigation from the Reciever is a little slow to browse, but if you prefer to use the ipod manually then it works perfectly!

Pros: Looks/sounds great Lots of options for subwoofer connection and both front and rear AUX inputs are great

Cons: Had difficulty fitting it to a '97 maxima.

Upon opnening the box this unit looks very solid and well built, almost looks like a higher end factory double din, which is exactly what I was looking for.Very simple to install, very easy to understand the program steps.Sounds great with my factory speakers, although I feel as if it would truly show it's colors with nice aftermarket door speakers. It also has subwoofer controls which I plan on adding subs at a later time. For the price it is a decent buy,Crutchfield was about the same price as Ebay BUT came with every little thing I needed to install it,minus the electrical tape. has all the plugs you would need for MP3,USB and even a memory card slot.

    Pros: Looks very well built

Cons: Would like to have the option of changing the blue lcd screen to red,as my gauges are red.Alot of units have that option,I think the next level up does.

I purchased this HU to replace the factory 6 disk changer in a friends Pontiac Vibe. Got the dash apart, and the supplied mounting bracket trimmed and installed. Go to insert the HU sleeve and it doesn't fit in the opening of the mounting bracket, and no amount of trimming could get it to fit. So I tried inserting the HU alone into the bracket and it wouldn't fit either. I ended up having to modify the factory bracket to get it installed. But when I put the factory bezel back on there is a slight gap on the sides of the HU. My friend doesn't mind, but I sure would. I don't know if the HU or if the mounting bracket is not sized correctly, but it was a pain to install. Perhaps I should have gone with a single DIN rather than a Double. Other than the poor installation this HU does exactly what my friend wanted it to do and she loves it.

Pros: Lots of features for a great price Pretty simple layout of controls, and straightforward menus.

Cons: Installation in a 2003 Pontiac Vibe was a disaster.

Just installed this in the wifes 2010 Aveo. It went in easily, using all the extra goodies supplied free by Crutchfield (dash kit, wiring harness, antenna connector, vehicle-specific instructions). The main thing we wanted was USB, and I would rate USB navigation as above average. Sound quality is fine. Durability could be an issue on such a low-priced model, but I will be happy to get a year out of it. Car audio changes so rapidly, we will probably want something else by then anyway.

Pros: Great bang for the buck, lots of features, no obnoxious demo mode unless you want it, display brightness about right. This would make a good front end for a home audio system if you have a robust 12v power supply sitting around, I'm thinking about that...

    Cons: None so far.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Dual X2DMA400 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the X2DMA400 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the X2DMA400 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)

Preset EQ Curves: The Dual CD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves (Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, Rock, & User) to customize your music listening.

Bass &Treble: The Bass & Treble can be independently adjusted from -6 to +6. Bass & Treble settings are retained for each mode individually. Any adjustments to the Bass or Treble settings automatically cancel the current EQ curve.

Loudness: The Loudness function enhances the bass & treble frequencies at low volumes. The Loudness can be set to 1, 2, 3, or Off.

2V/4Ch Preamp Outputs: The X2DMA400 is equipped with two sets of preamp outputs (Front, Rear/Sub). The unit's rear-channel can be used as a full-range preamp output with fade control, or as a non-fading subwoofer preamp output. When used as a subwoofer preamp output the level can be adjusted independently from 0-12. Adjusting the subwoofer level to 0 turns the subwoofer output off.

Source Volume Level: The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (Tuner, CD, Aux and USB). You can set the source volume level (+/-6dB) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Program Volume: You can se the X2DMA400 to power-on to the same volume level (1-46) every time.

Key Beep: When this function is enabled, every button press will output a beep tone.

    AM/FM + SiriusXM Ready

AM/FM Tuner: The Dual X2DMA400 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, scan, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The built-in AM/FM tuner allows you to store up to 18 FM station presets and 12 AM station presets. You can tune your presets manually or have the head unit do it automatically.

Local: The Local function allows only strong radio stations to be received, blocking stations with weaker signals.

European Tuning: You can switch the tuner between USA or European tuning.

SiriusXM Ready: The Dual XDMA400 comes ready for SiriusXM programming with access to XM & Sirius Satellite Radio stations. Thanks to its proprietary SiriusXM Connect port, you can add the optional SXV200V1 SiriusXM Connect tuner and receive more than 150 channels of exclusive programming directly from SiriusXM, via the "SiriusXM All Access" package (subscription required).
