Our take on the Dual XDVDN8190

Dual's XDVDN8190 DVD receiver incorporates navigation and Bluetooth® into a supremely capable entertainment center for your single-sized dash opening. Its SD™ card-based navigation system offers access to millions of points of interest, and you can make easy updates via the card slot. You'll get voice prompts, plus accurate, easy-to-follow maps of North America for all your expeditions. A built-in Bluetooth receiver allows you to conduct phone calls through your car's speakers with a compatible phone.

The motorized 7" touchscreen display pops up with the touch of a button. Put in a CD or DVD that you've loaded with your favorite MP3 or WMA files, and you'll have enough music for the longest road trips. The integrated SD card reader, in addition to letting you make navigation updates, plays your MP3/WMA files photos you've stored on SD cards up to 2GB in size.

Dual's iplug™ system gives you RCA audio/video inputs for connecting more of your electronic devices, plus a dedicated iPod input so you can control your iPod right on the touchscreen. You can mount the iplug in the place most convenient to your setup, and you'll get full iPod control via the touchscreen with the included iPod cable.

Take in your favorite films or videos when the car is parked, or entertain the passengers in the rear seats by sending the picture to an optional backseat monitor. Since the XDVDN8190 sports dual-zone operation, they can check out flicks in back while you drive to music up front. Dual equips the XDVDN8190 with Dolby® Digital surround sound decoding, so it's ready for you to build a real movie theater on wheels.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

The resolution of the display is 480 x 234 for a total of 336,960 pixels with a contrast ratio of 350:1. The screen has a 120° horizontal viewing angle (60° left or right), and a 90° vertical viewing angle (30° up and 60° down). The display is retractable and slides in and out electronically.

Display Angle Adjustment: You can adjust the unit's retractable monitor's vertical angle for better visibility. There are 6 display angles to choose from.

Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the displays brightness, sharpness, color, contrast and tint from 0 to +20.

Display Type: The unit's integrated monitor can be set to display a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio image.

Video Lockout: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the supplied yellow/blue wire must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged and disengaged in a preset sequence.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power for more than 40 seconds.

Built-in Navigation

Navigation: The Dual XDVDN8190 features built-in NavMate navigation software. The unit comes supplied with a NavAtlas 2GB SD-card which must be installed for navigation operation. The NavAtlas SD-card contains maps of the United States and Canada with approximately 10 million points of interest. The XDVDN8190 can map routes from point A to point B with stops in between if desired using the unit's touch-screen graphic interface.

GPS Antenna: The XDVDN8190 comes supplied with an external GPS antenna which features a magnetic base and 16.5" antenna cord terminated by an SMB connector which plugs into the back of the unit and mounts to the outside of your vehicle.

Voice Guidance: In addition to on-screen visual guidance, the XDVDN8190 utilizes turn-by-turn instructions with voice guidance so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.

Go To Menu: The Dual multimedia navigation headunit provides six choices for selecting a destination.

  • Address or Intersection: This option navigates using an exact address or cross street.
  • Previous Destination: This option allows you to scroll through and select from a list of recent destinations.
  • Point Of Interest: This option is helpful when traveling to a public place or looking for a type of location, such as a gas station or restaurant.
  • Home Address: This option allows you to store and select your Home address as a destination.
  • Office Address: This option allows you to store and select your Office (Work) address as a destination.
  • Favorites: This option allows you to navigate to a specific location previously stored as a favorite.

Route Preferences: You can set the unit to calculate your route by shortest distance or shortest time. You can also select for the navigation unit to avoid tools, freeways and ferries.

Trail Book: This function leaves a trail from the start point to the end point and name/save the trail for future reference for an off-road route.

Trip Book: This feature allows on-road trips to be created for future reference. You can then simulate the route.

Trip Computer: The Trip Computer displays the following information during your travel - Average speed, Maximum speed, Total trip time, Stopped time, Drive time, Elevation, ETA, Trip, Odometer, Digital clock, and Current speed.

Auto Recalculation: The Dual XDVDN8190 will automatically recalculate your route if you veer off the original calculated route so you can get back on track.

Map Orientation: You can change the perspective of the map from 2D North-Up (displays the map in 2 dimensions with North at the top), 2D Track-Up (displays the map in 2 dimensions with  your direction of travel at the top of the screen), or Split-screen.

Display Setting: The navigation display can be set for day or night time driving.

Relative Volume Gain: The gain settings allow you to customize the relative volume of the various modes to compensate for volume differences between the sources. The range is adjustable between -7 and +7, with 0 being the reference point. Relative volume can be set for AM/FM, DVD, iPod, Bluetooth, XM, Aux In, SD Card, and Nav.

Surround Mode: You can choose between full 6-channel output or a downmixed 2-channel mode.

Center/Rear Delay: You can adjust the time difference between the center and the front speakers to create a time delay between 1 and 5 milliseconds to produce a more accurate audio effect. You can also adjust the time difference between the rear and front speakers between 3 and 15 milliseconds.

XDVDN8190

Written By , Bflo NY on Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Read all the reviews, and I have to say it lived up to all the hype! Nice stero, CD player works as it should. DVD player does not work due to the feature to connect the DVD payer to the emergency brake. Screen is wicked cool! Nice NAV unit that worked within a minute of the hook up and the female voice is pleasant. The back up camera came free with the unit but had many, many compaints from buyers. I took their complaints to heart and when I installed it did what I could to lessen the impact. Example, other customers said the wires from the camera were small and frail, So when I installed it I taped the fittings. it works fine.
The were lots of other cool features such as RCA plug for rear DVD player, (did not hook this one up as my car is a two seater..) If anyone is considering a multimedia stero for their car this baby is for you! The harness that came with the stero worked well!!
blue tooth for my iphone does not stay paired. Though to be fair.. the stero is everything as advertized

Very Good for The Price

Written By Stallion, Plano, TX on Sunday, September 13, 2009

I have this in my 05 F-150 supercrew cab along with a 12" Kicker sub and 4
Kenwood door speakers with a mono alpine 500 watt amp. First off everything
about this thing is amazing, the navigation is so accurate and nice, the ipod
hookup is good, the dvd is amazing, and the bluetooth is also amazing. The only
reason I am giving this 4 stars is because i have to manually turn mine off every
time i turn the car off because if I dont then the internal 240 watt amp inside will
shut off giving me no sound when i turn the car back on. Not very big of a deal
but after a while it starts to get annoying

Awesome Features! So-so interface.....

Written By Maria, South Jersey on Monday, July 27, 2009

Ordered a complete system (Infinity tweeters and 2-way speakers throughout with an 8" bazooka) for the 03' Maxima for my birthday on a Friday and was at my front door before noon on Saturday....Crutchfield did a great job!

Instllation was a breeze with step by step directions and it works as advertized. DVD, CD, MP3, IPOD, Bluetooth, GPS etc.......As an additional installation perk there was no need to route the GPS the speedometer as some units require. Also havn't mounted the GPS antenna yet (sitting on the floor) and still get great reception.

The headunit would have gotten a complete 5 out of 5 except its a little cheesy or "old-school" as another review mentioned and I completely agree. However with the basic interface its extremely easy to use (especially with the remote)! Love IT!

Next on the list will be amplifiers for the front and rear speakers. The Dual only gives out 17 wats RMS and the Infinities require 50 watts RMS. Also I will be looking into adding rear seat cameras probably on the head rests.

Overall for the price and the perks its a must have!

Great product!

Written By Chad, Chicago, IL on Friday, July 24, 2009

This is exactly what I was looking for! It has it all. I have a convertible and didn't think the bluetooth would work with the top down. I was wrong. It works great with the top down. The navi is good. More advanced than what I was expecting. Ipod control works well. I have an iPhone so bought an adapter and it charges my phone and plays music right from touch screen. It sounds great. The bluetooth feature doesn't access my phonebook, missed, last, or placed calls. But you can use your iPhone for these (as it's playing music even!) and it automatically connects to the speakerphone. My girlfriend is not very good with electronics and she loves it. She uses my car once or twice a week. I showed her once and she has it! I would highly recommend this! Great price. Great features. Super easy install.

Too many problems

Written By timmer, San Diego, CA on Saturday, April 25, 2009

This unit is half the cost of similarly featured units so I expected some problems but experienced a myriad of them.

1. Tuner: Couldn't pick up local stations that the cheap factory unit could. A call to crutchfield verified the wiring was correct, and the expert installers tried multiple antennas to diagnose the problem to no avail.

2. GPS UI leaves a lot to be desired and seemingly easy things (eg, Seattle space needle, Mt Bachelor Ski resort) were not in the unit forcing me to stop and ask for directions.

3. iPOD will not randomize songs. It has a shuffle feature, but it plays the same songs in a row every time.

On the plus side, the hardware seems solid. It has lots of features and I used them all (backup camera, video in etc..).

Dual XDVDN8190

Written By Cory, Clermont, Fl on Thursday, April 02, 2009

This is a good system for the money. I was pleased with the installation, and functions/features of the product.

The only thing that is annoying, is that I have lots of music on SD card. When I insert the card, I have to see the message on the screen that says to apply the parking brake to watch videos (which lasts about 2 minutes!!!).
There MAY be a way to get around that, I just have to read the instructions.
Other than that, its a great unit.

Good Bang For Your Buck

Written By Carson, Mobile, AL on Tuesday, March 31, 2009

I bought this system in December 2008 for my 2001 Chevy Tahoe. I am very pleased with my purchase. Compared to the other products with similar features this is by far the best deal. Everything works as you would want it to. Below are the only things you may want make sure you are ok with:
1. Notice where you gearshifter is when in park if it is located ont he steering column. Mine was in the way of the motorized face coming out and I have to have it set on manual so it doesnt get stuck.
2. The iPod controls on unit don't allow for fast movements in different areas. So if you want to select by artist then you can only see 5 artist at a time and if you want to make it to artist 200 then you have to hit page down 40 times. There is no other faster way to do it. (in the songs folder you can quick type the number of a song but if you are like me and have over 4000 songs on there it is hard to remember what each one is).
3. The random button on the iPod control part really isn't random. Everytime i hit the button it starts with the same song and goes through the same progression (based on a number assigned to it). When the unit is turned off and turned back on it does not stay on random. The only reason it has not bothered me too much is I add songs a lot so everytime I do add them it changes the number assigned to the song (based on alphabetical order) so it goes through the same cylce but there is a different song there because it has been assigned to that number now.

Awesome In-Dash

Written By Christian, Michigan City, IN on Wednesday, March 04, 2009

This in-dash is the best for its price, i bought mine from the outlet store and it looked brand-new!!! the sound is awesome and so is the picture quality!!! The navigation is a little hard to get use to (ie, putting in street addresses), but once you get the address in everything is good, it takes you where you need to go and talks to you! One mistake I did do was cut the harness off the factory wires....but once i called crutchfield they walked me through which wires were which in my car and put it together in no time. And some advice would be to visual get an idea on where your going to route the GPS antenna before you start ripping out your paneling. And if you get this model then you DO NOT have to hook it up to your engine's speed sensor

Dual XDVDN8190

Written By Jeremy, West Springfield, MA on Friday, January 30, 2009

I purchased and installed this unit around 12/16/08 and havent had any major issues. I installed it in my 04 Jeep Overland. I am very satisfied with the unit overall. The complaints I have are as follows:

*GPS screen is very basic (colors, contrast, icons)
*GPS not as robust as standalone units
*Bluetooth hands free feature is useless unless your vehicle is extremely quiet on the inside
*No RDS on the radio (Does not display song information)
*Not Sirius/XM ready
*No HD radio (not that I want it but for a newer unit you would think it would come with it)
*Cannot silence the BEEP everytime you hit a button on the unit or the remote

When placing/mounting the GPS antennae you definitely need to moun tit on the outside roof of the vehicle as the manual says. I tried getting away with mounting the antennae in the car and it took 10 - 20 minutes for the GPS to pick up enough satellites to function properly. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the major name brands for DVD/GPS head unit this is probably the one for you.

This is a great stereo system. It sounds really good, works with my iPod touch, and is compatible with my blackberry curve. audio quality for the speaker phone is great and i can be heard very well. ipod sounds great and radio comes in very clear. the screen is bright and the GPS takes you where you want to go. great system.
