I wanted to like this, but I just can't

Written By William, Baltimore MD on Saturday, September 19, 2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I want to like this head unit, but I just can't. I purchased it in Feb, 2009 because of the features and the price. I've tried to like it, but I really wish I could just get my money back and buy something else. It only supports old firmware versions of ipods, so if you've updated your ipods in the past 3 or 4 years, you won't be able to control them with the head unit. Dual has no intention of updating the firmware for the unit either according to them. I've had many many issues with the GPS system. First was the SD card reader, which I had to send back to Dual after only owning the unit for 3 months, then had to wait 3 months to get it back to me. I've now had it for almost 2 months and I can't get the voice to work on the GPS unit. Just stopped working for no reason. I get no help from Dual. I really wish I could just get a full refund on this unit and get a different one. I wanted to like it, but I just can't.

The only things I do like about it, is that I can burn MP3s to a DVD-R disc and it will read it, so I can have tons of MP3s that way. And the blue tooth was decent, as far as blue tooth goes, but as one of the other posts said, it is somewhat cumbersome to set up. I expected a lot more from this unit.

Dual 8290 is slow/ poor FM reception

Written By DJ, Alexandria, VA on Tuesday, August 12, 2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The DUAL is a budget system that has the right idea. But, you get what you pay for. The built-in bluetooth works well, but was difficult to set up. the DVD navigation was off, the screens were very slow and the POI management was painful. The IPOD control was both slow and non-intuitive. Try changing IPOD folders while driving, you will be distracted to the point of danger. The touch screen was not responsive and often required hard taps. My spouse's finger nail tips did not work on it. The remote steering wheel interface with the PAC-SWI-X stopped working it worked when it wanted to, thus negating the safety feature of having steering wheel controls in your car. I had to remove this unit for fear of my spouse possibly being distracted while driving and the FM radio stations faded in and out when they are normally strong. I have to assume the unit was both defective and of low quality.

This is a very nice screen. Much more information than tiny handhelds.
Hooking up a license plate backup camera makes it very useful.
    What more could you want.

Video Lockout: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the supplied yellow/blue wire must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged and disengaged in a preset sequence.

Anti-Theft Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power for more than 40 seconds.

    Built-in Navigation

Navigation: The Dual XDVDN8290 features built-in NavMate navigation software. The unit comes supplied with a NavAtlas 2GB SD-card which must be installed for navigation operation. The NavAtlas SD-card contains maps of the United States and Canada with approximately 10 million points of interest. The XDVDN8290 can map routes from point A to point B with stops in between if desired using the unit's touch-screen graphic interface.

GPS Antenna: The XDVDN8290 comes supplied with an external GPS antenna which features a magnetic base and 16.5" antenna cord terminated by an SMB connector which plugs into the back of the unit and mounts to the outside of your vehicle.

Voice Guidance: In addition to on-screen visual guidance, the XDVDN8290 utilizes turn-by-turn instructions with voice guidance so you don't have to take your eyes off the road.

Go To Menu: The Dual multimedia navigation headunit provides six choices for selecting a destination.

    • Address or Intersection: This option navigates using an exact address or cross street.
    • Previous Destination: This option allows you to scroll through and select from a list of recent destinations.
    • Point Of Interest: This option is helpful when traveling to a public place or looking for a type of location, such as a gas station or restaurant.
    • Home Address: This option allows you to store and select your Home address as a destination.
    • Office Address: This option allows you to store and select your Office (Work) address as a destination.
    • Favorites: This option allows you to navigate to a specific location previously stored as a favorite.

Route Preferences: You can set the unit to calculate your route by shortest distance or shortest time. You can also select for the navigation unit to avoid tools, freeways and ferries.

Trail Book: This function leaves a trail from the start point to the end point and name/save the trail for future reference for an off-road route.

Trip Book: This feature allows on-road trips to be created for future reference. You can then simulate the route.

Trip Computer: The Trip Computer displays the following information during your travel - Average speed, Maximum speed, Total trip time, Stopped time, Drive time, Elevation, ETA, Trip, Odometer, Digital clock, and Current speed.

Auto Recalculation: The Dual XDVDN8290 will automatically recalculate your route if you veer off the original calculated route so you can get back on track.

Map Orientation: You can change the perspective of the map from 2D North-Up (displays the map in 2 dimensions with North at the top), 2D Track-Up (displays the map in 2 dimensions with  your direction of travel at the top of the screen), or Split-screen.

Display Setting: The navigation display can be set for day or night time driving.

    Audio Section

Speaker Outputs: The unit has 5 speaker outputs: front L/R, rear L/R, and center. The unit features a center channel speaker output, hardwired to the rear panel. The other four speaker leads are included in the plug-in harness.

Preamp Outputs: The XDVDN8290 has 6 channels of preamp outputs: front L/R, rear L/R, center, and subwoofer. If you want 6-channel theater-style sound, you can hook up the appropriate external amplifiers and speakers to the front, rear, center, and subwoofer preamp outputs. When the unit is in 6-channel mode, you can independently adjust the level of each speaker.

Dolby Digital: This unit supports Dolby Digital playback using its 5-channel speaker configuration or 6-channel preamp outputs.

Surround Mode: You can choose between full 6-channel output or a downmixed 2-channel mode.

Surround Setup: You can input the size and presence of each speaker in your sound system by entering "Large" or "Small" for Front left/right, and "Large," "Small," or "None" for Rear left/right and Center. For the Subwoofer, you can enter "Present" or "None." You can select "Large" for speakers that give a full-range output. When "Small" is selected, it will activate a high-pass filter for those speakers.

Dynamic Range Control: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of On or Off.

Pink Noise Generator: The built-in pink noise generator helps you set the relative speaker levels for multi-channel playback. You can play pink noise through the left front, right front, left rear, and right rear.

Center/Rear Delay: You can adjust the time difference between the center and the front speakers to create a time delay between 1 and 5 milliseconds to produce a more accurate audio effect.
