About the Fujifilm FinePix S9400W

David Brown

"50X" might be all you need to know

There are lots of features to look for when you're shopping for a camera. But for some folks, there's one that's more important than the rest: zoom range. With a 50X optical zoom lens, it's safe to say the Fujifilm FinePix S9400W will satisfy anyone looking to get incredibly close to distant subjects. It's ideal for travelers who never know what landmarks they may encounter — or how close they'll be able to get. For closer subjects — really close ones — use this camera's Super Macro mode for taking shots when the subject is as close as 1cm. No matter the distance between camera and subject, the S9400W will deliver excellent image quality thanks to easy-to-use controls and some cool features.

More than just powerful zoom

The versatile FinePix S9400W has lots of features to help you capture great photos in a wide variety of settings. If you're shooting fast action, press the burst mode button to fire the shutter at speeds up to 10 frames per second at the camera's full resolution. Capture a mountain landscape or city skyline with motion panorama for a 360-degree view. Dynamic HDR bracketing helps you deal with tricky shadows and backlighting. Or just allow six-scene auto recognition to help your photos look their best, no matter the setting.

Instant photo-sharing with built-in Wi-Fi

Wherever you're snapping cool photos, you'll want to share them quickly with friends and family back home. The FinePix S9400W's built-in Wi-Fi makes it easy to transfer photos wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet. Just download the free Fujifilm app on your device, use the S9400W's connection button for instant pairing, and start sending images to your phone or tablet so you can email and upload your favorite shots.

HD video

The FinePix S9400W offers cool video capabilities beyond high-def recording. You can shoot high-speed video — great for playing them back in smooth slow-motion. Plus, most of the same creative filters you can apply to still shots can be used to spice up your videos. Try Partial Color for a mostly black-and-white video with only a single hue shining through for a slick-looking home movie.

    • Setup menu: Image Display, IS Mode, Side Zoom Lever, AF Illuminator, EVF/LCD Mode, and Intelligent Digital Zoom.
    • Other: Shooting mode (P,S,A, or M), continuous shooting mode, macro mode, exposure compensation, flash mode, shutter speed, aperture, and indicators/best framing.

Instant Zoom: The Instant Zoom function lets you follow moving subjects in standard wide view for easy framing at high zoom settings. When you activate Instant Zoom, the subject tracked within the selected frame will be captured and saved at a high zoom ratio (1.4x or 2.0x). You can select a horizontal or vertical zoom frame.

Intelligent Face Detection: When Face Detection is On, the camera automatically detects human faces anywhere in the frame and sets the focus and exposure for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. This mode will prevent the camera from focusing on the background when taking group portraits or self portraits. Intelligent Face Detection also offers a red-eye removal option for removing the red-eye effects caused by the flash.

Image Stabilization: When shooting in a poorly lit area, any degree of camera shake can cause blurry pictures. The FinePix S9400W offers Lens Shift-type Image Stabilization to reduce the effect of the camera shake and subject blur. Image Stabilization can be enabled continuously or shooting only (when the shutter button is pressed halfway). For movies, the camera uses Digital Image Stabilization.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 (Image Size M or S), or 12800 (Image Size S). Auto ISO Sensitivity lets the camera determine the ISO setting with a maximum value of 400, 800, 1600, or 3200.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light. You can also measure for a white balance setting that best matches the light source.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in the P, S, or A shooting modes only.

FinePix Color: You can enhance the contrast and color saturation for the images you record, or you can take pictures in Black & White. Standard contrast/saturation is recommended in most situations. You can switch to Chrome for vivid contrast and color for shooting flowers or landscapes.

Continuous Shooting: You can take multiple pictures continuously while the shutter button is held, using the Continuous Shooting (or Burst) mode. The following modes are available:

  • Continuous H: Camera takes up to 10 pictures, at up to 10 fps.
  • Continuous M: Camera takes up to 10 pictures, at up to 5 fps.
  • Continuous L: Camera takes up to 10 pictures, at up to 3 fps.
  • SH1: Camera takes up to 60 pictures, max. image size 1080 x 960, at up to 60 fps.
  • SH2: Camera takes up to 60 pictures, max. image size 640 x 480, at up to 120 fps.
  • Best Frame Capture: The camera shoots a series of consecutive shots starting before and ending after the shutter release button is pressed. You can choose a frame rate of 10, 5, or 3 frames per second. You can also choose 10 or 20 total images, and vary how the frames are distributed before and after the button is pressed.
  • AE Bracketing: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera takes three shots, at up to 1.2 fps: one at the metered value for exposure, the second overexposed and the third underexposed. The amount of over- and under-exposure can be set to ±1/3EV, ±2/3EV, or ±1EV.

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer.

Auto Focus: In most cases, the S9400W uses contrast-detection TTL (through the lens) Auto Focusing. The camera can be set to focus on the subject continuously, or when the shutter button is pressed halfway. You can also select the focus area: Center, Multi, Area, Continuous, or Tracking.

Focus Range: The camera's focus range is approximately 1.3' to infinity (wide angle) and 11.4' to infinity (telephoto). In the Macro mode, the focus range is approximately 2.7" to 9.8' (wide angle), and 11.4' to 16.4' (telephoto). In Super Macro, the range is 0.3" to 3.2' (wide angle).

Flash Modes: The FinePix S9400W has a built-in manual pop-up flash with an effective range of 1.3' to 22.9' (wide angle), and 8.2' to 11.8' (telephoto). In macro mode, the effective range is 0.9' to 9.8' (wide) and 6.5' to 9.8' (telephoto). Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

  • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
  • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
  • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
  • Flash Off: You can close the pop-up flash when flash photography is prohibited, or to capture natural lighting under dim light.

Light Metering: The S9400W uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure. You can select from three metering modes: Multi, Spot, and Average.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include two-frame side-by-side display (with the previous and next images appearing as smaller thumbnails), 9-image grid (3 x 3), and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails.

Image Search: You can choose to sort your images by date, face, favorites, scene, type of data, and upload mark.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. When a movie is displayed, playback will begin automatically. You can select a Normal slide show that displays a single image at a time, a slide show that will automatically zoom in on faces selected with Intelligent Face Detection.

PhotoBook Assist: You can create a photo album inside the camera. You can select pictures stored on the memory card to be displayed in the PhotoBook. Up to 300 pictures can be added to a PhotoBook. PhotoBook can be viewed in the camera, or copied to a computer using the supplied MyFinePix Studio software.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

  • Printer or Photo Lab: plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer, insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab
  • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The FinePix S9400W is powered by four "AA" batteries. Alkaline, Lithium, and Ni-MH (Nickel-metal Hydride) batteries can be used, and the type of batteries being used should be indicated in the camera's menu. Four alkaline batteries are included. The approximate number of frames that can be taken with fresh or fully-charged batteries is 300 for alkaline, 500 from Ni-MH, and 700 for Lithium.

Connections

USB-Multi-Connector: The FinePix S9400W features a proprietary USB port for connecting the supplied USB cable for downloading your photos to your computer, or to a PictBridge-compatible printer.
