About the Fujifilm FinePix SL1000

David Brown

50X ought to do it

If you want more zoom than the Fujifilm FinePix SL1000 offers, you may need to rethink things. Because this camera's incredible 50X optical zoom will get you close enough to just about everything within reason, and a few things beyond it. With that kind of range, you'll find a whole new world of photo opportunities opening up to you. But don't get carried away with the long zoom. Remember to go wide angle from time to time for stunning landscapes and large group portraits. Or try out motion panorama mode to capture breathtaking 360-degree shots.

Smart shooting options

When zooming in on distant subjects, it can be hard to hold your camera totally still. That's where the SL1000's optical image stabilization comes in, subtlely shifting the lens to compensate for shaky hands so your photos turn out crisp and clear. Face detection helps you quickly focus on smiling subjects for beautiful portraits, while face tracking auto focus ensures they look sharp as they move within the frame. And easy bracketing options allow you to generate multiple images from a single shutter snap, for creating composite shots with balanced exposure or choosing from shots taken with and without the built-in flash.

Choose your view

When setting up your shots, the SL1000 offers plenty of flexibilty. The high-resolution LCD monitor tilts, giving you a large view of you subject even if you have to hold the camera up high or down low. Having trouble blocking out bright sunlight? Switch to the high-resolution electronic viewfinder, which automatically switches on when you look through it.

    Features

3" LCD Monitor/EVF: The Fujifilm FinePix SL1000 is equipped with a large, 3" high-resolution LCD monitor with 920,000 dots. The LCD can be tilted downward 45° or upward 90° to allow you to more easily frame high-angle or low-angle shots. Frame coverage is approximately 97% in shooting mode and 100% in playback mode. In addition to the 3" LCD monitor, the camera includes a 0.2" electronic LCD viewfinder with 920,000 dots. A sensor near the viewfinder detects you raise the camera to your eye and automatically switches the image to the viewfinder. You can also manually switch between the LCD monitor and the EVF, if desired.

50x Zoom Lens: The SL1000 is equipped with an F2.9-6.5 Super EBC Fujinon lens with a 50x optical zoom. The focal length is 4.3-215mm, which is equivalent to 24-1200mm in 35mm photography. The camera features two zoom levers, one on the top near the shutter release button, and the other on the side of the lens. The digital zoom is approximately 2x. When the digital zoom is activated, the maximum total zoom is 100x.

Instant Zoom: The Instant Zoom function lets you follow erratically-moving subjects in standard wide view for easy framing at high zoom settings. When you activate Instant Zoom, the subject tracked within the selected frame will be captured and saved at a high zoom ratio (1.4x or 2.0x). You can select a horizontal or vertical zoom frame.

Image Sensor: The FinePix SL1000 features a 1/2.3-inch, square-pixel BSI-CMOS image sensor with 16.2-million effective pixels.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. The camera has an internal memory, but the capacity is not given.

Still Image Quality: The FinePix SL1000 records still images in JPEG format in 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios in three sizes each, and one size at 3:2 and 1:1. You can also select how much the image files are compressed--Fine (low compression) for higher image quality or Normal (high compression) to increase the number of pictures that can be stored. The Image Size options are:

4:3 Aspect Ratio 16:9 Aspect Ratio 3:2 Aspect Ratio
    L: 4608 x 3456 L: 4608 x 2592 L: 4608 x 3072
    M: 3264 x 2448 M: 3264 x 1840 1:1 Aspect Ratio
    S: 2304 x 1728 S: 1920 x 1080 L: 3456 x 3456

RAW: Uncompressed images using image data directly from the image sensor can be recorded and saved in the RAW (RAF) format. RAW pictures must be "processed", or converted to JPEG format, using the supplied RAW File Converter software. If desired, you can set the camera to simultaneously record a JPEG file in Normal or Fine compression.

Motion Panorama: You can take a series of photographs that will automatically be joined to form a panorama. Once you choose a tall or wide panorama, the camera is panned 120°, 180°, or 360° while the shutter release button is held down. Panoramic images have the following resolutions:

    Motion Panorama Tall Wide
    360° 1624 x 11520 11520 x 1080
    180° 1624 x 5760 5760 x 1080
    120° 1624 x 3640 3840 x 1080

3D Images: The SL1000 can record 3D images using an Individual Shutter method. Two exposures of the same scene are saved in MPO (Multi-Picture Format). An overlapping guide on the LCD screen provides assistance for positioning the exposures. 3D images can be viewed on TVs that support the MP format, or on devices equipped for 3D display (FinePix Real 3D V3 digital photo frame or FinePix W3 digital 3D camera). You can also order prints of the 3D images from the Fujifilm website.

HD/SD Movies: The SL1000 can record high definition (16:9) and standard definition (4:3) movies are recorded in MOV (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) format with stereo audio (Linear PCM). The following options are available:

    • Normal Movies:
      • Full HD: 1920 x 1080, 60 fps
      • HD: 1280 x 720, 60 fps
      • 640: 640 x 480, 30 fps
    • High-Speed Movies: For slow motion playback. No sound is recorded.
      • 640 x 480: 120 fps
      • 320 x 240: 240 fps
      • 240 x 180: 480 fps

Shooting Modes: Using the top-mounted mode dial, you can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography. The shooting mode choices include:

    • Scene Recognition (SR Auto): With this "point and shoot" mode, the camera automatically adjusts the settings to suit the scene. The following scenes are selected automatically: portrait, landscape, night, macro, night portrait, back-lit portrait, and auto.
    • Auto: A point-and-shoot mode recommended for first time users of digital cameras.
    • Advanced: Combines point-and-shoot simplicity with sophisticated photographic techniques. Selectable advanced modes include: Advanced Filter, Pro Low-light, HDR, Natural & Flash, Natural Light, Zoom Bracketing, and Individual Shutter 3D.
    • Scene Position: You can select a scene suited to the subject or shooting conditions, and store it for quick access. Available scenes include: Portrait, Landscape, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Fireworks, Sunset, Snow, Beach, Party, Flower, and Text.
    • Motion Panorama: You can take a series of pictures and join them together to form a panorama. Use of a tripod is recommended in composing overlapping shots.
    • P, S, A, M:
      • Program AE: The camera sets the exposure automatically.
      • Shutter Priority: You choose the shutter speed, letting the camera set the aperture for optimal exposure.
      • Aperture Priority: You choose the aperture, letting the camera set the shutter speed for optimal exposure.
      • Manual: The Manual mode lets you choose both shutter speed and aperture.
    • Custom Mode: In P, S, A, and M modes, the Custom Set option in the shooting menu can be used to save current camera and menu settings. These settings are recalled whenever the mode dial is rotated to Custom mode:
      • Shooting menu: ISO, Image Size, FinePix Color, Image Quality, Photometry, White Balance, Intelligent Sharpness, AF Mode, Flash, External Flash, AE Bracket EV Steps, Face Detection, and Instant Zoom.
      • Setup menu: Image Display, Dual IS Mode, Side Zoom Lever, AF Illuminator, EVF/LCD mode, and Intelligent Digital Zoom
      • Other: Shooting mode (P,S,A, or M), continuous shooting mode, macro mode, exposure compensation, flash mode, shutter speed, aperture, display type, and indicators/best framing.

Intelligent Face Detection: When Face Detection is On, the camera automatically detects human faces anywhere in the frame and sets the focus and exposure for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. This mode will prevent the camera from focusing on the background when taking group portraits or self portraits. Intelligent Face Detection also offers a red-eye removal option for removing the red-eye effects caused by the flash.

Optical Image Stabilization: When shooting in a poorly lit area, any degree of camera shake can cause blurry pictures. In this case, Optical Image Stabilization (lens shift type) is applied to make sure your photos are blur-free. You can choose between Continuous and Shooting Only image stabilization, or turn Image Stabilization off.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 (image size M), or 12800 (image size S). The Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions. Auto (3200), Auto (1600), Auto (800), and Auto (400) have maximum value limits. The higher the sensitivity setting, the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions, however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light. You can also measure for a white balance setting that best matches the light source.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in the P, S, or A shooting modes only.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting (or Burst) mode. The following modes are available:

    • Continuous H: Camera takes up to nine pictures, at up to 10 fps, while the shutter button is pressed.
    • Continuous M: Camera takes up to 9 pictures, at up to 5 fps, while the shutter button is pressed.
    • Continuous L: Camera takes up to 9 pictures, at up to 3 fps, while the shutter button is pressed.
    • Best Frame Capture: Camera takes a series of pictures, starting before and ending after the shutter button is pressed. You can choose a frame rate (H, M, or L), and the total number of images to be shot (9 or 18). You can also vary how the shots are distributed before and after the shutter button is released.
    • AE Bracketing: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera quickly takes three shots: one at the metered value for exposure, the second overexposed and the third underexposed. The amount of over- and under-exposure can be set to ±1/3EV, ±2/3EV, or ±1EV in the shooting menu.

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer.

Auto Focus: In most cases, the SL1000 uses contrast-detection TTL (through the lens) Auto Focusing. The camera can be set to focus on the subject continuously, or when the shutter button is pressed halfway. You can also select the focus area: Center, Multi, Area, Continuous, or Tracking.

Focus Range: The camera's focus range is approximately 1.4' to infinity (wide angle) and 11.4' to infinity (telephoto). In the Macro mode, the focus range is approximately 2.7" to 9.8' (wide angle), 11.4' to 16.4' (telephoto), and 0.3" to 3.2' Super Macro--wide angle).

Flash Modes: The FinePix SL1000 has a built-in manual pop-up flash with an effective range of 1.3' to 26.2' (wide angle), and 8.2' to 13.4' (telephoto) when sensitivity is set to ISO800. In macro mode, the range is 0.9' to 9.8' (wide) and 6.5' to 9.8' (telephoto). Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
    • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
    • Flash Off: You can close the pop-up flash when flash photography is prohibited, or to capture natural lighting under dim light.

Hot Shoe: The camera has an accessory hot shoe that allows you to mount an optional flash unit, such as the Fujifilm EF-20, EF-42, or EF-X20.

Light Metering: The SL1000 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure. You can select from three metering modes: Multi, Spot, and Average.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include side-by-side (with the previous and next images appearing as smaller thumbnails), 9-image grid (3 x 3), and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. When a movie is displayed, playback will begin automatically. You can select a Normal slide show that displays a single image at a time, or a slide show that will automatically zoom in on faces selected with Intelligent Face Detection.

Tagging Pictures: Images and movie clips can be tagged in the camera for automatic uploading to Facebook. Once you have selected your images, the next time you connect to your home computer, the images will upload automatically to your Facebook profile.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer, insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The FinePix SL1000 is powered by the supplied NP-85 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (3.7V/1700 mAh). A fully-charged NP-85 is good for approximately 350 shots. The supplied BC-85A battery charger will charge an NP-85 battery in about 180 minutes.

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu. Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.

    Connections

USB Multi-Connector: The FinePix SL1000 features a proprietary jack for connecting the supplied USB cable. This cable allows you to download your photos to your computer via USB, or connect your camera directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer.

HDMI: You can connect the camera to an HDTV via HDMI for viewing images and videos in HD. An optional HDMI-to-Mini HDMI (Type C) cable is required.

Note: When the camera is connected via HDMI, the USB cable cannot be used.

    Supplied Software
