A portrait lens that practically sees in the dark

With its extra-wide maximum aperture and classic 85mm equivalent focal length, this XF series Fujifilm lens is a natural for shooting brilliant portraits and recording richly detailed, high-resolution images in very low-light. That same large aperture also gives you amazing control over depth of field (the slice of space in your camera's view that's actually in focus) for tight close-ups that let you see a focus difference between an eyelash and an earlobe. Shooting wide-open at f/1.2, the in-focus parts of your portraits will be exquisitely sharp while your backgrounds will melt away to put your subjects into a world of their own.

Superior construction and optical quality

Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lens elements and a double-sided aspherical glass element give you razor-sharp images with excellent color fidelity. And this XF lens' premium metal construction — including finely machined rings milled from a solid metal block —  provides a luxurious feel, smooth operation and consistent, high-quality performance.

It is the beautiful fuji portrait lens. Amazing. It is a piece of craftsmanship. Get one and you will never regret buying it.

Pros: Beautiful bokeh and silky smooth.

Cons: A bit on the heavy side

Gorgeous but......

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In concept this is a gorgeous lens but Fuji's QC leaves much to be desired. The first lens I received had a loose focus ring with excessive play and a small nick in the coating on the front element at the very edge. The second sample had a rather large piece of lint embedded in the center of the rear element which is cosmetic only as it won't affect IQ but still shouldn't happen. A third sample had no mechanical or cosmetic issues but was the worst optically. None of the 3 lenses were symmetrical in performance across the frame until f2.8 or f4 which is very disappointing for a $1000 APS C prime without image stabilization. At the widest apertures they all had one extremely sharp quadrant and one very soft quadrant with the other two falling somewhere between. The areas that are sharp at the widest apertures are stellar and by f5.6 the lens IQ is incredible across the entire frame but Fuji should be doing much better for the price. My Canon 50f1.4 is not capable of the high edge sharpness of the Fuji wide open but the image field is symmetrical over the entire frame. I also own the 23f1.4, 10-24, 18-55 and 55-200 and none have the issues I've experienced with the 56. I should add that all 3 samples were fresh factory packages with no evidence of being previously opened or used which is what I expect from Crutchfield. Overall a very disappointing experience with Fuji but as usual Crutchfield has been great to work with.

Pros: Extremely sharp at f5.6 and above. Nice size. Balances well on XT1.

Cons: Extremely poor QC with high sample to sample variation. Very poor sharpness symmetry between f1.2 and f2.8.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The best XF lens so far, extremely sharp and no distortion wide open. Bokeh is creamy and control is solid.

Pros: Sharp, good looking.

Cons: Auto focus is still a bit noisy.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: I do not have specifics on the damage to the lens. Our scratch and dent items have some type of minor cosmetic damage, nothing that would affect the products performance, and the items come with the full manufactures warranty. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  May 25, 2015 ]  Staff
