Our take on the Fujifilm FinePix XP150

by Meredith Krebs
Fujifilm

Waterproof and ready for adventures

Carry along a rugged waterproof camera the next time your travels take you to the beach, pool, or ski slopes, and capture unforgettable snapshots of your vacation. These cameras can go underwater with you, and they usually stand up to other hardships, too, like extreme temperatures and accidental drops, so you can spend less time worrying about your camera and more time having fun.

A camera that can take the rough stuff

Freeze it, drop it, go underwater with it or or even get it all sandy. The Fujifilm XP150 won't mind. This camera just keeps taking amazing pictures wherever you go and no matter how much you abuse it.

Superb image quality

The FinePix XP150 captures sharp, high-resolution photos. The high-quality 5X optical zoom lens delivers picture-perfect results across the entire zoom range. Sensor shift image stabilization greatly reduces the effects of camera shake and subject blur to deliver crisp, clear shots in even the most demanding conditions. The CMOS sensor delivers great image quality, even in low-light situations.

Waterproof

Find your way

The built-in GPS tags your photos with location information, and you can even use the camera to navigate back to an amazing scenic overlook where you took a photo. When you get home, you can plot your route using the supplied PC software and show off how far you went.

Fun and flexible shooting modes

Flexible shooting modes make it fun and easy to capture your best vacation pics. The face detection mode identifies up to six faces in your frame and adjusts focus and exposure for better portraits and group shots. Or capture impressive landscapes using the motion panorama mode, which automatically stitches together three consecutive shots to create one large image. And for your underwater trips, you can select from several special underwater photo modes, or switch to one-touch underwater movie recording to capture stunning HD video of coral reefs or tropical fish.

    Features

5x Zoom Lens: The Fujifilm FinePix XP150 is equipped with an F3.9-4.9 Fujinon lens with a 5x optical zoom. It has a focal length of 28-140mm (35mm equivalent). Combined with the digital zoom of 6.8x, the total zoom is 34x.

LCD Monitor: The XP150 has a 2.7" color LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 dots and approximately 96% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode.

Rugged Build Quality: The XP150 features a rugged build quality that meets standards for water, dust, and shock resistance (through in-house testing). It complies with JIS Class 8 water resistance (to 32.8 feet), and JIS Class 6 (IP68) dust resistance standards. It has also passed Fujifilm drop tests, surviving a drop from a height of 4.9' onto 2" thick plywood (compliant with MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5: Shock). The camera is also freeze-proof to 14°F.

GPS: The camera has a built-in GPS receiver, which allows you to record GPS data with your photographs. During shooting, GPS data is displayed in the monitor, including the current location by place name or its coordinates. During playback, pictures for which GPS data exists are indicated by a GPS icon, and the data is displayed for a few seconds. The GPS feature can be used in Geo-tagging, Photo Navigation, and Route Tracking Logs. You can use the GPS data with both Google Maps and Microsoft Earth.

Note: Because GPS data is received from overhead satellites, you must be in an outdoor location with relatively few obstructions in order for the GPS to work properly.

Image Sensor: The FinePix XP150 features a 1/2.3-inch, square-pixel CCD image sensor with 14.4-million effective pixels.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. The XP150 also has an internal memory of approximately 47 MB to allow you to store a few more images in case your memory card is full.

Still Image Quality: The FinePix XP150 records still images in JPEG format in 4:3, 16:9, and 3:2 aspect ratios. You can set the image quality to Fine (low compression) or Normal (high compression). The image sizes for each aspect ratio are as follows:

4:3 Aspect Ratio 16:9 Aspect Ratio 3:2 Aspect Ratio
    L: 4320 x 3240
    M: 3072 x 2304
    S: 2048 x 1536
    L: 4320 x 2432
    M: 3072 x 1728
    S: 1920 x 1080
    L: 4320 x 2880

HD/SD Movies: The XP150 can record high definition (16:9) and standard definition (4:3) movies in MOV format (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) with monaural audio. Individual HD movies cannot exceed 29 minutes in length, while SD movies cannot exceed 115 minutes. A Class 4 SD card or better is recommended when shooting HD movies. The following options are available:

    • Full HD: 1920 x 1080 (1080i), 30 fps
    • HD: 1280 x 720 (720p), 30 fps
    • VGA: 640 x 480, 30 fps

High Speed Movies: High speed movies up to 30 seconds in length can be shot at high speeds of up to 320 frames per second (fps). The higher the speed, the smaller the size of the images. No sound is recorded with High Speed movies. The available speeds and sizes are as follows:

    • 640 x 480 @ 80 fps
    • 320 x 240 @ 160 fps
    • 320 x 112 @ 320 fps

Shooting Modes: You can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography. The shooting mode choices include: Scene Recognition, Auto, Program AE, Pro Low-Light, D-Range Priority, Natural and Flash, Natural Light, Portrait, Portrait Enhancer, Landscape, Motion Panorama 360, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Sunset, Snow, Beach, Underwater, Underwater (Wide), Underwater (Macro), Party, Flower, and Text.

Intelligent Face Detection: When Face Detection is On, the camera automatically detects human faces anywhere in the frame and sets the focus and exposure for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. This mode will prevent the camera from focusing on the background when taking group portraits or self portraits. Intelligent Face Detection also offers a red-eye removal option for removing the red-eye effects caused by the flash.

Image Stabilization (Dual IS): When shooting in a poorly lit area, any degree of camera shake can cause blurry pictures. In this case, CMOS-shift Image Stabilization can be activated to reduce the effect of the camera shake. You can choose whether the image stabilization is performed at all times (Continuous) when the camera is in the shooting mode, or only when the shutter button is pressed halfway (Shooting Only). Image Stabilization can be turned off when using a tripod.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, or 3200. The Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions. The higher the sensitivity setting, the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions, however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light.

Auto Exposure: The FinePix XP150 automatically sets the aperture and shutter speed according to the shooting conditions. The shutter speed can range from 1/4 second to 1/2000 second in the Auto Mode, and 4 seconds to 1/2000 in other modes. The aperture can range from f/3.9 to f/6.2 in wide angle and f/4.9 to f/8.0 in telephoto.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in the Program AE shooting mode only.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting mode. In "Normal" continuous mode, the camera takes up to 12 pictures while the shutter button is pressed. In "Final" continuous mode, the camera takes up to 40 shots while the shutter button is pressed, and records the last 12 pictures. In each case, the frame rate depends upon the image size:

    • Large: Up to 3 fps
    • Medium: Up to 5 fps
    • Small: Up to 10 fps

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer. In addition, you can take pictures of yourself with others using the Couple Timer or Group Timer. With the Couple Timer, the camera starts the timer when it detects two portrait subjects close together. You can also vary the proximity of the two persons (near, close-up, super close-up). When the Group Timer is used, the camera starts the timer when the selected number of portrait subjects (1-4) is detected.

Auto Focus: In most cases, the XP150 uses contrast-detection TTL (through the lens) Auto Focusing. You can choose between two AF Modes: Center and Tracking. In the Scene Recognition mode, the camera continuously focuses on the subject(s) in the frame, increasing the drain on the battery.

Focus Range: The camera's focus range is approximately 2.0' to infinity (wide angle) and 3.3' to infinity (telephoto). In the Macro mode, the focus range is approximately 3.5" to 2.6' (wide angle) and 1.3' to 2.6' (telephoto).

Flash Modes: The FinePix XP150 has a built-in flash with an effective range of 2.3' to 10.2' (wide angle), 2.3' to 8.9' (telephoto), and 1.0' to 2.6' (macro). Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
    • Fill Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
    • Flash Off: You can close the pop-up flash when flash photography is prohibited, or to capture natural lighting under dim light.

Light Metering: The XP150 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a 5-frame cascading display (two previous and two following frames cascaded behind the highlighted image), a side-by-side two-frame display (with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames, 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.

Image Search: The Image Search function lets you search pictures by the following criteria:

    • Date: Viewing images by date makes it easy to locate specific events or occasions.
    • GPS Location Name: Search for photos alphabetically by location name
    • Face: Portraits can be selected based on composition: groups, couples, or solo portraits.
    • Favorites: Search for photos by rating
    • Scene: Pictures shot in Auto or SR Auto modes can be replayed according to the type of scene: portrait, landscape, night scene, or macro.
    • Type: You can easily search your pictures according to the type of photos: still photos, edited images, or movie footage.
    • Upload Mark: Search for pictures selected for upload to a specified destination.

Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio of 4:3, and will be saved as a separate file.

Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select "Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original image.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. You can select normal playback, or with a Fade, Slide, or Wipe transition.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer, insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The FinePix XP150 is powered by the supplied NP-50A Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. A fully-charged NP-50A is good for approximately 300 shots. The supplied BC-50A battery charger will charge an NP-50A battery in about 180 minutes.

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu. Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

USB Multi-Connector: The FinePix XP150 features a single proprietary jack for connecting either the supplied USB cable or an optional A/V cable. This one output allows you to download your photos to your computer via USB, or view your photos on a TV.

Note: The video output can be set to NTSC or PAL.

    Supplied Software

System Requirements: The FinePix XP150 is equipped with Software for MyFinePix Studio Version 2.1 for Windows and FinePix Viewer Version 3.6 for Macintosh. In order to use this software, your computer must have the following operating systems:

    • Windows: Windows 7 (SP1), Windows Vista (SP2), Windows XP (SP3)
    • Macintosh: Mac OS X version 10.3.9-10.6 (Mac OS X version 10.7 and later not supported.)

When I took this camera out of the box, there was no doubt in my mind that the XP150 was indeed waterproof, shockproof, and freezeproof. This thing's built like a tank! The wraparound high-impact plastic is secured by screws on all sides. The carry loop is metal, so it won't snap off, and it's also fastened to the body with screws.

In order to access the battery and outputs, I had to disengage not one but *two* latches. And when I closed it up, the camera prompted me to check them to make sure they were fully latched. I have no qualms taking this camera on a ski trip, a beach vacation, or a hike through the Appalachians. And it would probably come out showing less wear and tear than I would!

This camera is a great price for what it does. Although I had to learn the hard way that you have to use power search at the beginning of any trip to get geotagged photos, the battery life is amazing.

    Fuji Finepix FP150

Written By CB, Wisconsin on Wednesday, September 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this camera for about a month and have tried it out several times. I was quite pleased with the picture quality with the 14 mps! The pics are very nice for a rugged camera! I am no expert on cameras or picture taking so I leave it all on AUTO and that seems just fine! If I am taking very close pics, it automatically switches to macro without me having to figure out how to do it each time! I read the directions and was kind of concerned however, that it states dont leave the camera out in rain??? This is upposed to be waterproof up to 15 ft. Was planning on using it when I snorkel and this has made me fear taking it in the water for that use! It also has a VERY short cord to attach it to the computer to get the pics off....reallly short..................so it makes it kind of hard! But other than those two things, I am pretty happy with it so far. It looks nice, not boxy and all plastic like other rugged cameras......Im glad I bought it as I wanted a camera that could go to the beach with me, get a little wet sometimes, be dropped at times, etc....and yet this camera is still very good looking!! I do recommend this.
    Cons:
    too short of a cord
