X-T1 connected to tablet via Wi-Fi

Control the X-T1 with a Wi-Fi connection and Fujifilm's free Camera Remote app.

A camera that's easy on the eye

The first thing you'll notice about the Fujifilm X-T1 is how great it looks on the outside. The retro-style body, with its full-magnesium chassis and milled aluminum dials, is definitely eye-catching. Rugged, too: the lightweight frame is sealed in approximately 80 places, to resist moisture and dust, and the camera operates at temperatures down to -10°C.

This camera is no flash in the pan, though. There's plenty "under the hood" as well. You'll get gorgeous colors and clear detail from the large, light-efficient CMOS image sensor. When you're shooting in low-light situations, an impressive extended ISO (sensitivity) setting of 51200 makes sure you get sharp color and little or no digital noise.

The electronic viewfinder on the X-T1 features an information-packed 2.36 million dot OLED display that stays right side up whether you're shooting vertically or horizontally. That's pretty impressive. The 3" tilting LCD viewscreen is clear to see under all conditions whether you're inside or out, thanks to an improved refresh rate, and its reinforced glass screen enhances durability. This camera is easy on the eye in every possible way.

It's fast, too

Previous generations of the X-series were fast, but the X-T1 is even faster. When you're using the camera in single-shot mode, the EXR II processor inside this camera reduces the shooting interval to 0.5 seconds and shutter time lag to a lightning-fast 0.05 seconds. In continuous shooting mode, the X-T1 can snap up to 8 frames per second when your subject is in motion. It's compatible with SDHC and SDXC memory cards, as well as the latest generation of high-speed memory card: the UHS-II standard. You won't miss a thing, no matter how fast it's moving.

Did we mention well-connected?

Flexibility could be this camera's middle name. With built-in Wi-Fi, you can upload photos and video to your computer, tablet or smartphone in a flash, to edit or share. Fujifilm's dedicated Camera Remote app lets you control just about everything the XT-1 can do, except you can do it while standing five feet away, using your mobile device. The camera also has geotagging, so you can add relevant geographical details to dramatic travel photos.

When you have time to make a wired connection, USB and mini-HDMI ports are available. There's a hot shoe that allows you to power the included EF-X8 external flash, and an array of other useful accessories. The X-T1 is also compatible with all of Fujifilm's XF-series lenses, giving you the opportunity to choose exactly the right lens to match your creative vision.

Perfect starter lens included

The X-T1 camera kit comes with the XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 R LM OIS standard zoom lens. The lens features optical image stabilization (OIS) to help prevent blurred images due to camera shake. The OIS can be activated on the lens by way of the 2-way switch, or directly from the camera menu. It's a perfect lens to start out with — it's suitable for close-up portraits, but also has enough zoom to bring the action closer to you when you need it.

Want a camera you can grow into? Try a compact system camera.

These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, compact system cameras (CSCs) have interchangeable lenses, and advanced control and processing. You can explore these features for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, but their mirrorless design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable — great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.

Features

Overview: The Fujifilm X-T1 is part of the X-series interchangeable lens digital cameras. It has the Fujifilm X-mount, and is compatible with XF-series lenses. This package includes the XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 R LM OIS standard zoom lens.

Compatible Lenses: The X-T1 is compatible with the following Fujinon XF prime lenses: XF14mm F2.8R, XF18mm F2 R, XF35mm F1.4 R, and XF60mm F2.4 R Macro. These lenses offer precise control over depth-of-field and excellent out-of-focus bokeh, due to the design of the molded aperture diaphragm blades. In addition, Fujinon XF zoom lenses, such as the 55-200mm and 10-24mm lenses, provide crystal clear images near and far. With the optional M Mount Adapter (sold separately) you can use a wide variety of M-mount lenses from Leica, Voigtlander, Carl Zeiss, and Ricoh.

3" LCD Monitor: The X-T1 has a 3" color LCD monitor featuring 1,040,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode. When shooting, you can choose from a standard display, an information display, or a custom display, which allows you to select from up to 15 items to display in the monitor. You can also choose an Information Off display.

0.5" OLED Viewfinder: The camera is equipped with a 0.5" Organic LED (OLED) viewfinder with 2,360,000 dots and 100% frame coverage. An eye sensor on the viewfinder automatically turns on the viewfinder and turns off the LCD monitor when you bring the camera up to your eye, and turns it off when you take it away. The viewfinder has a diopter correction dial that allows you to adjust the strength of the viewfinder in accordance with your eyesight.

Image Sensor/Processor: The X-T1 features the new 23.6mm x 15.6mm APS-C format, X-Trans CMOS II image sensor with 16.3-million effective square pixels (16.7 total pixels). The sensor features an original color filter array that minimizes moiré and color aberrations. Coupled with the X-Trans CMOS II sensor is the high-speed EXR Processor II, which reduces the start-up time and shooting interval to 0.5 seconds, the shutter time lag to 0.05 seconds, and the Auto Focus to a blistering 0.08 seconds. This sensor/processor combination also allows you to shoot continuously of up to 8 frames per second.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards, including ultra-high-speed UHS-II format SD cards. Class 10 cards or better are recommended for recording movies. No memory cards are included with the camera.

Still Image Quality: The X-T1 records still images in JPEG format in 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 aspect ratios in three sizes and two compression ratios (Fine or Normal). In addition, RAW images can be recorded from the raw, uncompressed image data from the camera's image sensor. RAW format images can be processed on a computer using the supplied RAW File Converter application software, or converted to JPEG in the camera. You can also shoot a RAW + JPEG image at the same time, with separate RAW and JPEG files recorded and stored.

HD Movies: The X-T1 can record Full HD movies in MOV format (H.264 standard) at 60 or 30 frames per second with stereo sound. Available frames sizes are 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) and 1280 x 720 (HD). The maximum movie length is 14 minutes for Full HD, and 27 minutes for HD.

Panorama: The camera is capable of taking panoramic images by panning the camera through one of two angle settings. As you pan the camera, multiple frames are recorded and automatically stitched together in the camera to create the panoramic image. The Panorama options are:

  • Panorama M:
    • Horizontal: 6400 x 1440
    • Vertical: 2160 x 6400

Built-in Wi-fi: The camera's built-in Wi-Fi lets you connect the camera to your computer or smartphone wirelessly. With the Fujifilm Camera Remote app on your smartphone, you can view and download images and videos to the smartphone, control the camera remotely, or copy location data to the camera and save it to your photos (smartphone must have GPS feature). When the Fujifilm PC AutoSave application is loaded onto your computer, you can upload pictures from the camera via wireless LAN.

Note: Fujifilm Camera Remote is available from the Apple App Store, and is available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 5.0 and later. It is also available from Google Play for Android Smartphones and Tablets running Android OS Ver.2.2 to 4.4 (4.0 or later to use the Remote Control feature). Fujifilm PC AutoSave is compatible with Windows 8, 7 (SP1), Vista (SP2) and XP (SP3), as well as Macintosh OS X 10.6-10.8.

Analog Dial Operation: The camera features lots of analog controls for setting the camera's shooting settings. On the top panel are three large dials for setting the ISO Sensitivity, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. Surrounding two of those dials are rings to set the drive mode and metering mode. On the front is a rotary switch for selecting the focus mode. Many of the compatible Fujifilm lenses, including the supplied 18-55mm lens, have switches to turn on/off the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and to set aperture control to Automatic or Manual. If you choose Manual aperture, you can change the aperture setting by rotating the aperture ring on the lens.

Q Button: The camera also features a single button that gives you access to numerous settings. The Q Button (Quick Menu) on the rear panel lets you quickly set the AF mode, Dynamic Range, White Balance, Noise Reduction, Image Size, Image Quality, Film Simulation, Highlight Tone, Shadow Tone, Color, Sharpness, Self-timer, Face Detection, Flash Mode, and EVF/LCD Brightness. Once the Q Button is pressed, you can rotate the rear command dial to find the setting you desire.

Function Buttons: The X-T1 has six customizable Function buttons (Fn), that let you choose the functions for each button. The function buttons are located on the front, top, and rear panels, including the four selector buttons surrounding the Menu/OK button. In the menu, you can select from several options to customize the function for each button.

Shooting Modes: The Fujifilm X-T1 lets you set the shutter speed on the camera using the analog dial on the top. The lens aperture can be set on the lens manually using the aperture control ring. The shutter speed and aperture both have an automatic setting. The shutter speed and aperture settings combine for four shooting modes:

Shooting Mode Shutter Speed¹ Aperture²
Program AE Automatic Automatic
Shutter Priority Manual Automatic
Aperture Priority Automatic Manual
Manual Manual Manual
  • ¹ Shutter Speed Options: Auto, 1/4000, 1/2000, 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, Time (selectable 2 to 30 sec), and Bulb (up to 60 minutes)

  • ² Aperture Options: On XF18-55mm (F2.8/F4 to F22). Varies with lens.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity using the top mounted dial on the top of the camera. You can set the ISO sensitivity to Auto, or to presets from ISO 200 to 6400 in 1EV increments. Extended settings are equivalent to ISO100 (L), ISO12800 (H1) or ISO25600 (H2). With the ISO Auto Setting, you can set a Default Sensitivity, a Maximum Sensitivity, and a Minimum Shutter Speed.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, Incandescent light and Underwater (requires waterproof case). In addition, you can measure for a white balance value or display and select from a list of color temperatures.

Film Simulation: The X-T1 can simulate the effects of different kinds of film, including black-and-white. You can select one of the following options:

  • Provia/Standard: standard color reproduction
  • Velvia/Vivid: a high-contrast palette of saturated colors, suited for nature photos
  • Astia/Soft: a soft-toned palette of less-saturated colors
  • Pro Negative Std: a soft-toned palette. The range of hues available for skin tones is enhanced; a good choice for studio portraits.
  • Pro Negative Hi: offers slightly more contrast than Pro Negative Std, making it ideal for outdoor portraits.
  • Monochrome: standard black-and-white
  • Monochrome + Y Filter: black-and-white pictures with slightly increased contrast; tones down the brightness of the sky
  • Monochrome + R Filter: black-and-white picture with increased contrast; also tones down the brightness of the sky
  • Monochrome + G Filter: softens skin tones in black-and-white photos
  • Sepia: takes pictures in sepia tone

Color Space: Depending upon how you intend to use the image, you can choose the output color space at the general sRGB setting or the broader color rendition of Adobe RGB (for commercial printing).

Exposure Compensation: Using the dedicated Exposure Compensation dial on the top of the camera, you can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 19 steps from -3.0 to +3.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in all shooting modes except Manual.

Bracketing: You can take a series of photos with varying settings for each picture. Bracketing options include:

  • AE: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots, one using the metered value for exposure, the second overexposed by the selected amount, and the third underexposed by the same amount.
  • ISO: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots, one using the current sensitivity setting, the second with the sensitivity raised, and the third with the sensitivity lowered.
  • Film Simulation: Each time the shutter is released, the camera takes one shot and processes it to create copies with the film simulation settings selected.
  • Dynamic Range: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots up to about 6 fps, each with different dynamic ranges: 100% for the first, 200% for the second, and 400% for the third.
  • White Balance: After selecting a bracketing amount, the camera takes three shots each time the shutter button is pressed, one at the current white balance setting, one with fine-tuning increased by the selected amount, and one with fine-tuning decreased by the selected amount.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting mode. At the High Speed setting, the camera can take up to 47 pictures at 8 frames per second. At Low Speed, the camera can take pictures at approximately 3 fps until the memory card is full. The frame rate and number of frames per burst may vary depending on the type of memory card used.

Multiple Exposures: You can create a photograph that combines two exposures. After the first shot is taken, it will be shown superimposed on the view through the lens, and you will be prompted to take the second shot.

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer. The 10 second self timer is recommended for self portraits, while the 2-second self timer is used to reduce blur caused by the camera moving when the shutter button is pressed.

Remote Release: The X-T1 has a 2.5mm sub-minijack connection for adding the optional RR-80 Remote Release. The RR-80 can be used to take photos when the camera is on a tripod or for long time-exposures. In addition, a standard cable release can be used when attached into the threaded receptacle on the shutter release button.

Focus Modes: The camera lets you choose how the camera focuses. Using the rotary control on the front of the camera, you can select Single AF, Continuous AF, or Manual Focus.

Flash Modes: The X-T1 does not have a built-in flash, but comes with the EF-X8 Shoe Mount Flash. Optional external flash units (EF-20, EF-42, EF-X20) can be used for additional lighting at night or indoors under low light. The camera has a sync terminal for connecting flash units that require a sync cable. Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

  • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
  • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
  • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
  • 2nd Curtain Sync: the flash fires immediately before the shutter closes
  • Commander: the built-in flash can be used to control optional remote flash units
  • Suppressed Flash: The flash does not fire.

Light Metering: The X-T1 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure. Using the ring surrounding the shutter speed dial, you can select from three metering options: Multi, Spot, or Average.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a 5-frame cascading display (two previous and two following frames cascaded behind the highlighted image), a side-by-side two-frame display (with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames, 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.

Image Search: The Image Search function lets you search pictures by the following criteria:

  • Date: Search for photos by date
  • Face: Search for photos that include faces
  • Favorites: Search for photos by rating
  • Type: You can easily search your pictures according to the type of photos: still photos, RAW pictures, or movie footage.
  • Upload Mark: Search for pictures selected for upload to a specified destination.

Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio of 3:2, and will be saved as a separate file.

Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select "Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original image.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. You can select normal playback, normal playback that zooms in on faces, or multiple pictures at once. You can choose to have the pictures fade to the next, if desired.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

  • Printer or Photo Lab: plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer, insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab
  • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The X-T1 is powered by the supplied NP-W126 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. A fully-charged NP-W126 is good for approximately 350 shots. The supplied BC-W126 battery charger will charge an NP-W126 battery in about 150 minutes.

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu. Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera is amazing. If you are looking for a camera with all the professional settings and features of some of the top SLRs, but in a portable and compact body it is this camera. The design is intuitive, photographer friendly, and in general designed for the process of capturing images. If you look at the thing you'll see loads of buttons and knobs, whats great is that all of them feel useful. I own multiple full frame Canon rigs and I can't say that about them. There are loads of technical reviews online, so I'll spare you that go for the camera because it is small enough to go everywhere you go and not raise the ire of the "no pro camera places", but will give you all the pro features you"ll need, mixed with easy access to them.

Pros: Very feature heavy, compact, solid body construction, portability. Functional construction, smart and well thought out use of space. For the kit the included lense is sharp and highly functional.

Cons: Battery life (get a second battery asap), compact body can feel small and for bigger fingers buttons and dials can feel cramped, lack of available accessories at time of release, price of accessories. The Electronic viewfinder is the best I have seen, but for people moving from mirrored slrs for the first time it will take some getting used to.
