Our take on the Accele RVCLPMB

by Buck Pomerantz
Accele

Thin rear-view camera for your license plate

The safety of those behind your vehicle depends on you having a good view when you're backing up — especially when something's too small to be seen with your regular mirrors. Accele's RVCLPMB rear-view camera mounts on the top or bottom of your license plate to make sure you can get the full picture, from the best angle. You can even swivel the little camera in its housing for a better shot.

The sleek water-resistant metal case almost disappears on your license plate frame, adding a cool stealthiness to the design. The CCD-based color camera shows a clear image even under extreme low-light conditions.

Highlights:

  • rear-view license plate camera
  • black cast metal case
  • mounts in top or bottom position
  • camera swivels for best vertical view
  • 0.1 lux CCD-based camera sees clearly, even in low-light conditions
  • 170-degree wide viewing angle
  • 23' RCA video cable included
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Illegal in Arizona

Written By PhxRick, Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, April 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks good our of the box, very contemporary an all that. But when I positioned it onto the license plate bracket, I discovered that it covered the state name. In Arizona that's illegal (since 2009). That's not Accele's fault, some/many states do not have that restriction and, had I been paying closer attention to the picture when I ordered it, the issue would have been readily apparent. I only post this review as an advisory to prospective buyers; check with your DMV before buying ANY license plate camera. BTW, customer service was very helpful with the return and emailed me a prepaid UPS label. No complaints at all.
Pros:
Looks good, probably works fine.
Cons:
Not legal in some states. Crutchfield might have mentioned that in the overview.

Great little camera. Doesn't feel as cheap as I expected given the price. Hook up was a little confusing (had my backup lights on permanently for a minute) but I just had to slow down and think about it. Could use a little more in the way of directions though. Overall satisfied.

I thought I needed to spend much more to get a good rear picture, but based on Crutchfield sales recommendation, I gave it a try. The picture looks great on my 7 inch Pioneer screen. Night vision is surprisingly good too. Let's hope it is durable.
Pros:
Night vision.

I bought this camera for an 05 Subaru Outback. The install was relatively easy and straight forward. Though I did have to drill a hole behind my license plate to run the wires into the back hatch. Designed well, with a quality finish. Sturdy piece of equipment. Works great with my AVH-X8500BHS headunit. Picture is a little grainy, but for the price this is a great product.
Pros:
Price On-screen Reverse Guidelines/Markers Straightforward installation
Cons:
Grainy picture

Awesome little camera !
Pros:
Easy to install, picture quality is far better than I expected.
Cons:
Wishing the RCA connector was 5 foot longer ! it was a challenge to get it routed to the head unit on my 06 double cab Tundra with the 6.5 foot bed. additional length would have allowed for more options.x

Overall i am quiet impressed with the camera itself.

Picture quality both in bright light and in the Dark is excellent.

Installation can be a bit of a pain. Though not the fault of the product. Mainly due to the design of vehicle.

I would buy this for my other cars. Much cheaper option than the dealer installed one.
Pros:
Good Picture quality
Cons:
None at this time.

Great camera, but its installation covers up about half of the word Texas on the top of the license plate, which is illegal. I'm going to have to figure out some kind of raised mounting or maybe drill higher holes in my license plate to lower it.

Cheap product for the price. I would have expected something better for the price paid for this item. All in all, save your money and either buy a better camera or spend less and buy something of similar quality.
Pros:
Works
Cons:
1. The ferrite filter is mounted on the cable in such a manner where it forces you to drill a hole much larger than necessary. I would have designed it to be installed with the filter downstream of the RCA connections. 1. Grainy video. Not particularly impressed

Black Out Camera

Written By Rick, High Point, NC on Monday, October 14, 2013

The camera and mount are aesthetically pleasing, but I advise you test it before running the supplied wire. Installed new Alpine in dash, connected ran supplied wired and hid all traces of installation, tried to set up camera and no picture. Wow. Never a problem with other brands I've purchased and installed in past. Will need to get replacement.
Pros:
Good looking and simple install.

It does what it sais but has a grainier view than I would expect in 2013. The first one I got the video cable was faulty and I spent hrs trying to troubleshoot what I was doing wrong. Very frustrating.
Pros:
If I put a campershell on my truck or decide to run it onto the back of my trailer it will be nice to have. It is functional.
Cons:
First one was faulty. Grainy picture

This camera has a great picture, a wide viewing angle, and is great value for the money. You can undo the set screws and adjust the camera to the optimal viewing angle depending on what you want for your application. Works very well for hooking up trailers by yourself or making sure the kids are not behind you.
Pros:
Easy to install, Great picture, Great low light picture, Great viewing angle, fantastic value for money.
Cons:

Excellent camera kit! Be weary though the wiring is a bit tricky ...especially with the additional thin red trigger wire that is infused with the Yellow RCA jack... Pay attention..... it needs to be hooked to the reverse light in conjunction with the power cord!

Works great. The daytime picture is extremely clear. Nighttime picture is slightly blurring but still not bad.
Pros:
Easy to install. Great picture quality.
Cons:
The picture was upside down after installation. The camera comes with a big arrow indicating this side up. Either someone put the arrow on upsode down or the camera was assembled wrong. I had to install the camera with the arrow pointing down to get the picture right.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I hate to admit this but with age comes less mobility so it is harder for me to turn around and look out the back windows to see also my disability interferes also. I bought this back-up-camera and I thought it would at least be a fair picture, well I was surprised the picture is nice and clear and undistorted very nice. This Camera really makes backing up a dream very nice looking also it just blends right in with the car and plate frame it has a nice finish on it and will weather nicely also. I sure am glad I read all the reviews of this camera they all say it is a really nice camera and I agree with the reviews
Pros:
Looks nice, Blends in with the car contours, nice shiny finish, Small, Great picture, Clear picture, undistorted picture, NO blurring, See's far and near very clearly, has markings for green yellow and stop on screen telling you how close or far away you are,
Cons:
I just can't think of any.

Awesome for the money

Written By James, SF Bay Area on Sunday, August 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a great camera for the price. I was thinking of investing in a more expensive camera and doing a permanent custom install, but I was afraid I wouldn't get the right camera angle. After reading the reviews I'm glad I went with this. It's actually more of a "black chrome" finish, which is a plus since it doesn't look like your run-of-the-mill license plate back-up camera, and I love the adjustability of the camera angle. Some have commented on poor night quality but I disagree. Yes it's a bit grainy in the evening, (much like a regular photo camera would be in low light) but it's still much sharper than I expected.
Pros:
Price is right, adjustable camera angle, nice finish.

Reasonable camera for the price, watch for faulty parts

Written By Giggity, VA on Wednesday, August 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera is what you would expect for the price. The picture quality is good enough for its purpose - any people/objects in the camera's field are clearly visible, and the delay for things to appear on screen is short. (Fraction of a second) My main gripe is that my unit came with a faulty RCA cable, of all things. It greatly increased the install time as I had to troubleshoot the problem - and of course the cable was one of the last things I checked. I bought a replacement RCA cable locally rather than call Crutchfield since I wanted to finish the install the same day - so that defect put me out a few extra bucks. Given the generic nature of the product, I'd assume defect rates are higher than the name brands - so if you're willing to risk it, this certainly is a good deal cheaper than the Pioneer/Kenwood cameras.

This camera comes with range lines, which is nice, though you can disable that by cutting a cord if you prefer.

Splicing the power line into the reverse taillight isn't fun, but not terribly complicated if you have Posi-tap connectors for the job. (This product should come with one!)

Another plus is that it comes with a license plate bracket. If you want to mount on the license plate, this is an even better deal - as the name brands that offer plate brackets don't include them with the camera and charge an excessive amount for them.

Buy a RCA extension cable if you have a larger car. The length of this cable wasn't sufficient for my Grand Caravan.
Pros:
Price Range lines Comes with license plate bracket
Cons:
Faulty RCA cable RCA cable too short for my minivan No posi-tap connector included

03 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab LONG BOX and the wire made it to the license plate! Had my doubts... Resolution is great and the safety zones are awesome. Now I will use to parallel park this beast in Down town Seattle. Can also back up to trailer! Yes, pinch me.
Pros:
Long cord, excellent resolution, adjustment options.
Cons:
Wire comes out of bottom of unit instead of top or both. You have to run wire underneath camera on top of license plate. I might make my own hole to get this out of top.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a professional installer put this in for me and connected it to my Soundstream VR-652NB radio, which I purchased from Crutchfield and installed myself. The installer commented that this was the best display from a back-up camera that he's ever seen; it surpassed even the Pioneer units they normally sell for much more money. I love it! The exceptionally clear picture, the meter bars that reflect how close you are when reversing, and the price make this the perfect camera.
Pros:
Exceptionally clear picture Meter to show how close you are to an object Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Solid product. Mirror finish with what appears to be a well protected cable. At first I wasn't sure I'd want the Green, Yellow, Red gradient on my display, but I find it helpful now that I have calibrated the distance it indicates to what is actual. Works very well in low light.
Pros:
Nice sharp, clear color display.

This is a great camera for the price. It was easy to install and has not given me any problems yet.
Pros:
Easy installation, acceptable picture quality.
Cons:
Unable to install in top license plate mounting holes due to it covering the state name.

Great Camera

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great camera attached it to a JVC DVD Receiver, instructions leave a lot to be desired luckily didn't need too much. Picture is great quality cable length was plenty to get from Tailgate of 2009 Subaru Forester to the Receiver though had to disassemble all tailgate trim to get wires inside. I did need all of the vertical adjustment to get it to see low enough to help with parking.
Pros:
Quality picture, decent price looks good.
Cons:
Instructions.

Good, could be better.

Written By Tab, Louisville ky on Wednesday, June 05, 2013

Simple install, instructions are not detailed so some technical understanding is needed. Picture quality isn't the best but it is a backup camera not a bluray movie. Video cable is on the short end, although it was just long enough for my 2008 Colorado some bigger trucks will need a longer cable. Also the cable hole on the bracket so you don't pinch the wire was on the bottom so when mounting it on top of the license plate the cable is coming out of the bottom then wrapping around the top. I think they should have made a slot on both top and bottom for either mounting locations.
Pros:
Looks great. Works great.
Cons:
Picture quality. Vague instructions. No options in cable length.

Great camera!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this camera. It has a great range. I mounted it on my 03 Sequoia and have had great success with it. It works wonderful with my new Pioneer deck. I like it because it is easily adjustable. The biggest thing is to get the viewing area exactly how you like it. I needed mine angled more downward to see things in my garage and when street parking. Others might want it angled higher to see kids playing behind them. Either option works wonderfully. I really like how slim and easy it mounts on my truck.
Pros:
Easy of mount and angle range
Cons:

awesome camera

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome camera. Very clear image. The fisheye from the wideangle lens is a little bit to get used to. Installed in a 99 dodge ram quad cab long bed. Had plenty of wire in the kit. One part of crutchfield said it comes with 16' of cord and the other says 24'. I'm leaning more towards the 24' coming in the kit. Instructions are a little vague though. Took a little common sense, (and a working knowledge considering I'd just done it 2 days before). lol. All in all an awesome product and the perfect addition to any full size pickup as mine is on 35's and is about a chore to park on a good day. lol! That being said i recommend this to everyone in the market!
Pros:
awesome picture even at night, adjustable, plenty of cord for full size long wheelbase truck,
Cons:
vague instructions

Not a bad price for a stylish great working camera but if installing into a larger vehicle you will need a longer composite video cable (25' is what I needed on my 2500 quad cab)
Pros:
Very stylish and useful

Cable not long enough and no type of detailed instructions for installation

good camera for the money!

Written By chode, easthampton,ma on Friday, February 22, 2013

so far this is a great camera for the price. very durable feeling and has an attractive black chrome finish. the backup grids work very well and are accurate as i tested this on my trash can. install was a bit tricky on my 08' D.C. Tundra and i had to buy a 24' video cable (perfect length) as the 16' one that came with it did not even come close. the screen is crisp in the day and night is a bit snowy but comfortable visible. this looks great on my D.D. Pioneer 7" screen and now i have a bit more confidence backing up.
Pros:
price, fit&finish, very good picture
Cons:
NO INSTRUCTIONS and short video cable for trucks

Great buy for the money, looks good and seems to be made of quality materials. Works great, no complaints. Wire up the camera before you install it, and save yourself 5 minutes turning it over. Don't be dicouraged by all of the cons, just want to inform of everything. Would definately buy again/recomend to a friend.
Pros:
price looks easy install nothing fancy, does what it is supposed to great viewing angle
Cons:
Can't tell which way is up on camera, but easy install makes up for that no paperwork, directions, or anything. just camera in box. Thank you tech help, Crutchfield customer service is outstanding. not picture quality clear like $200+ cameras, but it does job, and good enough to see anything on ground Cable just long enough to reach dodge ram quad cab

Nice looking mount,, but no installation directions

Written By Doug, Lake Worth, Fl on Sunday, August 05, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is good looking and is made of quality materials. The video image is quite good. There is some image saturation when backing towards the sun. Although installation is pretty obvious, I was dissatisfied with the lack of any installation instructions regarding which way is up and whether or not the visible screws are for adjusting the up/down angle of the camera??? Still haven't tried the adjustment beacuse the image is not too far off in vertical adjustment. I think that angling it down somewhat would make the sunlight overexposure problem less pronounced. There is an overlay which appears on the image to indicate danger zones when backing, but no audible collision imminent warning as in the newer factory installed rear view camera / sensors.
Pros:
Quality, Appearance
Cons:
Lack of installation / alignment directions. Video saturation with strong light sources.

Can you wire the camera to be on when driving or only when in reverse? Will it hurt the camera/receiver to be on while driving? (IE wear out sooner?) [ Tom  Apr 03, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • the camera is always on, its the monitor that would switch to the input of the camera when the vehicle is put in reverse. So to answer your question, yes you can leave it on all the time. Mine is 4 years old and still works great. [ CHRISTOPHER R   Apr 06, 2014 ]
  • You could wire it up using a toggle switch If you have a dedicated display for the camera you could just attach the power wire of the camera to any hot wire with ignition on and have rear view all the time. But if you are using a multi function display (such as radio) I would do the toggle switch since it will negate any of the other controls while on [ DAVID N   Apr 04, 2014 ]
  • I actually had it hooked up that way via a switch I had mounted in a perfect location on my dash. It looks really cool when your driving and you turn it on-people loved it. Or to watch what's going on behind you while parked. The problem? Every time I did it, shortly thereafter the receiver would zap out. It didn't matter if I was driving or in park. I would then have to reset the receiver (with a pulled open paper clip), and of course that means you have to re-set everything as if it was newly installed. The installer said there was no work around. After the third or fourth time I decided to forgo using the switch ever again... [ WILLIAM   Apr 04, 2014 ]
  • They guy that hooked mine up said you could. Involved something about a relay. [ DARIUS   Apr 04, 2014 ]
  • Only in reverse [ SCOTT D   Apr 04, 2014 ]
How do you route the wire from the licence plate to the radio when it is installed on the rear of a pickup? [ Tom  Apr 03, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • Thanks [ Tom   Apr 04, 2014 ]
  • I ran mine through an existing hole behind my license plate to the frame rail then stayed on the frame rail to the engine compartment up through the engine compartment and fire wall along an existing wiring harness and then inside the dash to the radio. Fairly simple on a 2005 f150. [ HEATH   Apr 04, 2014 ]
  • When I installed mine I routed the cable following the passenger side of the main frame beam. Tying it with zip ties and keeping it up high and out of harms way. The toughest part was finding a soft spot in the firewall to get the wire out of the cab. I located a rubber plug in the passenger side floorboard, under the carpet that I was able to cut a slit and pass the cable through. [ MICHAEL   Apr 04, 2014 ]
  • Follow factory wires on frame [ JOHN M   Apr 04, 2014 ]
  • My suv has a hatch back.... I routed the wire from the dash. ..along driver side floor molding...up the rear eindi w molding into the hatch back to the license plate frame [ DANIEL   Apr 04, 2014 ]
My Camera is way too bright, barely shows colors on screen, how can this be adjusted if can??Reviews shows most say its very good picture?Do you think I have a lemon or was it installed incorrectly for some reason. How many amps does this camera draw? [ Yatesteve  Mar 22, 2014 ]
2 answers
  • It depends on how you hook it up. Mine is hooked up straight to my head unit and reverse wire. So it only turns on in reverse or if I manually turn it on through the head unit. So long story short the camera draws 0 amps I hooked up the propper way when the vehicle is off. [ CHRISTOPHER   Mar 24, 2014 ]
  • It is basically a cell phone camera and would draw only fractions of an amp. I would guess 40 mA nominal. [ PAUL   Mar 24, 2014 ]
Is there any advice for keeping the thieves away? [ christian  Jan 20, 2014 ]
11 answers
  • This mounts to your license plate its really not noticeable, I have been all over the United States and Canada and my truck has sat overnight in some pretty bad areas with no problem. [ CHRISTOPHER R   Jan 21, 2014 ]
  • The simple way would be to replace the existing phillips or flat head screws that attach your plates with a torx head type screw or even an allen wrench head. This wont completely keep thieves from stealing it, but it will prevent any ordinary Joe walking around with a screwdriver in his pocket from taking it. [ JAMES   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • Thanks got a few replies on this question. I appreciate the answers thanks fellas. [ christian   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • Nope thanks. I already have a Clifford pager alarm and a CCW so I think I' am gtg lol. I haven't had any issues with my system so far though I do turn it down before I enter my complex. [ christian   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • Thanks for the input [ christian   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • Auto stores sell a license plate bolt kit that requires a special wrench to install and remove the bolts. Very effective. [ FREDERICK R   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • You can buy one-way screws perhaps. Take the originals in to a hardware store and see if they are available in that size. Or, once you install them, you can take a 1/4" drill bit and sdrill out the Philips head. But then they would be very difficult (but not impossible) for you to remove also should you ever need to in the future. [ WILLIAM   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • hi I was skeptical at first since it's only $80 bucks. there were mixed reviews on it but I gambled and I'm glad I did. I have it on a sierra 1500 for 7 months now and it works perfect. very clear for $80. my license plate light gives off a good amount of light for night time so i can still see n it's still useful. I would give it a 4-4.5 for day time n 2-3 at night. I would def buy again; I'm totally satisfied. hope this review helps. [ THOMAS   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • I used security style screws most likely they won't have the right screw driver to get it off [ ROB   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • Use a very odd shaped screw, so that a typical screwdriver does not just take it off also glue it so it is very difficult to take off. That's what we did, but my trunk is parked in a secure area. Anything else? [ RUSSELL   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • Use button head anti tamper fasteners. Should be able to find them at McMaster Carr or a really good hardware store. [ RANDALL D   Jan 20, 2014 ]
What is the best way to run the cable in a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500HD CrewCab? [ Dan  Jan 17, 2014 ]
2 answers
  • i have a 2003 Avalanche 1500 LTZ, but it should be the same if not very similar. I ran the cord under the steering wheel and over the hood open lever. Behind the hood open lever there are a bunch of cords that come from the outsid, under the truck. i followed those cords out of the truck and ran the cable against the frame all the way to the back of the truck. i then attached the power cable to the reverse light and connected the ground. Hope that helps. AG [ ALEX   Jan 19, 2014 ]
  • Since it's an American car, your gas tank is probably on the driver side and your fuse box is probably on the passenger - the latter is in the passenger foot well on mine but check yours first. Go opposite the gas tank side if you can, avoid the drive shaft and exhaust for hopefully obvious reasons, and use a good set of heavy duty zip ties - the kind with a high melting point meant for outdoor use, you can find those pretty easily - and tie the cable up to the frame every 3 feet or so. Tap in to the power/reverse lights at your front fuse box, hook up to your HU, and you are good to go. I have this camera, use it with an AppRadio 3, it works great, nice resolution, decent low-light performance (the reverse lights help), good field of view. I have a friend with one who has had problems with interference (lines on the screen) so you may want to buy some ferrite cable clamps, I didn't have this issue myself. I have a 5.5 foot bed and the cable was plenty long enough but you may need an extension if you have a 7+ foot bed on your truck. Overall it's pretty simple to install if you know how to wire it. [ GEOFF   Jan 17, 2014 ]
I have a Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS does this camera offer mirror image (reversed) output? [ christian  Dec 26, 2013 ]

  • Thanks bud appreciate it [ christian   Dec 31, 2013 ]
  • I installed this on my Pioneer AVH last summer and use it constantly as a backup camera. I haven't checked with writing to see if the image is reversed, but when I look at the picture on the Pioneer's screen backing up into my driveway for instance, my house shows on the left side of the screen just as it does in the Rearview Mirror. Hope this helps. The camera works great! May or may not be tricky to route the wiring from the back of your car all the way to the head, on my Subaru Outback it was fairly simple. [ STEVEN   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Yes, and very good image in low light. [ JIM D   Dec 29, 2013 ]
  • Yes it is. I had this for almost 7 months, and quality and image are still very good. That's a great buy. [ DENRICK E   Dec 27, 2013 ]
