Our take on the Valor DDN-868W

by Ken Nail
Valor

Why install a car stereo with built-in GPS?

Imagine taking a trip as your car's receiver gives you directions, finds the best restaurant for dinner, and plays movies for your back seat denizens. Navigation receivers cover all the bases, with GPS guidance, DVD playback, and a host of other useful features. You can search through millions of points of interest to locate gas stations, restaurants, museums, and other interesting spots, wherever you are. Most receivers offer Bluetooth capability for hands-free calling, along with the ability to search through your iPod playlists with touchscreen controls.

Valor puts the emphasis on usability with the DDN-868W navigation receiver, a double-DIN car stereo with a nice-looking 6.2" touchscreen. The large icons and a clean screen layout tell you right away that you won't have to spend much time looking at the manual. Just touch the icon you want for the source or function you need, then dive right in. And this receiver's uncluttered appearance will look right at home in just about any dash.

GPS guidance
The nav system's 3 million points of interest will make it easy to find the services you need, and you'll have access to maps of Canada, the entire United States, and Puerto Rico. The text-to-speech function even announces street names when it's time to make a turn, a nice touch when you're staring ahead at three right turns spaced closely together, for example. You'll also find other nice navigation features like Lane Guidance and Signpost, which really help to eliminate the last-minute dash over a lane or two to get to the right exit.

Hands-free calling and music streaming
This receiver's Bluetooth functionality allows you to conduct phone calls with a compatible cell phone without taking your hands of the wheel. And, with one press of a button, you can stream music from a compatible cell phone or other Bluetooth device straight through your car's speakers.

Movies and more in your car
When you're parked, you can watch DVDs on the full-color screen. This receiver also plays compressed video files, so you can load multiple movies onto a hard drive, flash drive, or recordable DVD, instead of carrying multiple discs. You can hook up a monitor to the receiver's audio/video output so your passengers can enjoy a movie while you drive. For entertainment along the way, slip in a CD or DVD loaded with MP3 files, or plug your portable music player into the handy aux input.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Valor DDN-868W has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double-DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using your vehicle's factory brackets and the supplied hardware.

Note: As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

6.2" Touchscreen LCD Monitor: The DDN-868W Double-DIN navigation receiver features a 6.2" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 touchscreen LCD monitor. The resolution of the display is 800 x 480 (WVGA) for a total of 384,000 pixels. The screen has a 120° horizontal viewing angle (60° left or right), and a 90° vertical viewing angle (30° up and 60° down).

Touchscreen/Front-Panel Controls: This unit has touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons and a rotary-dial along the left edge of the screen.

Multilanguage OSD: The headunit's on-screen display text can be set English, French, Spanish, or Chinese.

Display Type: The unit's integrated monitor can be set to display a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio image when watching a movie.

Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the touchscreen monitor's Color, Contrast, and Brightness (0-20).

Video Lockout: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the pink wire (in the supplied harness) must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

    Onboard Navigation

Built-in GPS Navigation System: The built-in GoGoNav navigation system from EnGIS Technologies supports map data for the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. A rich feature set delivers multilingual voice guidance powered by Loquendo's compact yet high-performing embedded Text-To-Speech (TTS), a 3 Million Points of Interest (POI) database, Signpost and Lane Guidance, automatic rerouting plus many more features.

Map Data (via MicroSD): The unit comes supplied with a TeleAtlas (2010) 2GB MicroSD-card which must remain installed for navigation operation (comes pre-installed). The TeleAtlas MicroSD-card contains maps of the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, along with approximately 3 million points of interest.

Note: Please visit www.gogonav.com for map updates.

GPS Antenna: The DDN-868W comes supplied with an external GPS antenna which features a magnetic base and 10' antenna cord terminated by an SMB connector which plugs into the back of the unit and mounts to the outside of your vehicle.

Map Display: As you travel, the DDN-868W's on-screen map guides you to your destination with a highlighted route, directional arrows, and turn directions at the top of the map (with estimated distance to next maneuver). The bottom of the map indicates your current speed, the current time,  the remaining travel time, remaining travel distance, and your expected time of arrival. If you depart from the original route, the navigation system recalculates the route and provides new directions. You can adjust the map color (Daytime/Nighttime) and orientation (2D/3D).

    • 2D/3D Map: You can changes the perspective of the map from 2D North-Up (displays the map in 2 dimensions with North at the top), 2D Track-Up (displays the map in 2 dimensions with  your direction of travel at the top of the screen), 3D Track-Up (displays the map in 3 dimensions with your direction of travel at the top of screen).
    • Color Modes: Select between Day (for a bright background), Night (for a black background) or Auto (to automatically switch between the two). The display's brightness can also be adjusted manually.

Auto Zoom: The unit will automatically zoom in/out to a certain map scale level at the next maneuver or intersection, as well as according to the speed of the car.

Voice Guidance (Text-To-Speech): In addition to on-screen visual guidance, the DDN-868W utilizes turn-by-turn instructions with Text-to-Speech voice guidance (powered by Loquendo) so you don't have to take your eyes off the road. The unit offers 3 voice languages (English, French, Spanish). You can also adjust the volume level of the voice guidance system.

Lane Guidance: Lane Guidance helps you safely prepare for your next maneuver by displaying the correct lane(s) to stay in.

Signposts: Signposts provide a realistic representation of actual signposts at complex highway junctions. As you approach a highway junction, the signpost displays route shields, route directions, locality, exit, and lane information.

Turn-By-Turn Screen: The Turn-by-Turn Screen offers a more simplified guidance mode. The Turn-by-Turn mode presents an enlarged maneuver image and text to indicate the next turn. The distance remaining to the next maneuver is indicated by the distance bar. The second maneuver is displayed at the top of the screen with a smaller image and text.

    Garbage!!!

Written By JayP, Mount Airy, MD on Wednesday, July 04, 2012

Valor systems are worthless! I installed it and only kept it for 2 months before switching to a Kenwood. It would freeze up at least once daily requiring a hard reset plus the menu system is poorly thought out. When I bought the Kenwood replacement at a Crutchfield store, I mentioned that it was replacing a Valor, the Salesman just groaned.
    Pros:
The GPS works well when the system doesn't freeze up.
    Cons:
It freezes up constantly. The instruction manual was written by someone who obviously doesn't have a good command of English.

not a good option even if it was far less expensive.

Written By texas, dallas, tx on Sunday, December 18, 2011

the "equalizer" consists of bass and treble. wow. the nav system has to go through a long launch every time you want to use it, even if you've had the radio playing.
    Pros:
    touch screen works well
    Cons:
i have never seen a screen that is this light when the power is off. it is very reflective, and is basically unusable in daylight. i am not the type to return a product, but i am going to try.

    It's cheaper for a reason

Written By Dan, Austin, TX on Tuesday, November 29, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very excited to find this unit and its features for the price. However I had seriously bad luck with it. The last straw for me was finding that the unit drew over 300 mA of current on my battery with the key OFF, which was enough to kill it if the car sat for 2 days. I bought a new battery before discovering it was this unit's fault. For reference, without the unit installed, current draw went below 30 mA.

I think if I go with an in-dash navi unit like this again, I'd have to spend more on a "bigger" brand for better luck.

As always, Crutchfield support was awesome during the whole ordeal.
    Pros:
Price. Size of screen. Many connections in rear. Lots of config menus.
    Cons:
Terrible screen glare. Painfully slow navi startup. Bogus navi map stops displaying road names when zoomed out a small amount. Large current draw on battery when key is off.

    Great Product @ Great Price

Written By GeaBaldyVx, Raleigh, NC on Sunday, November 13, 2011

All in all this unit is great. It has everything you look for in units 2x the price. One thing that is unlike the more expensive units is the fact the steering wheel control module is built in!

I have owned Pioneer and Kenwood units in the past and they have been great. However, with those great names and good features comes a higher price. Hand-Down this Valor offers the best value you could possibly ask for.
    Pros:
The Valor Headunit is an excellent buy. You get so much bang for your buck it isn't funny. The Tuner is spot on and crystal clear, the DVD player is 2nd to none and the on-screen controls are great, Bluetooth built-in w/ an on board Mic make install easy, A2DP on a Head Unit in this price range is INSANE!!!, SD Card for Music, Videos etc. is standard, but the real kicker is GPS NAV all packed into a clean quick to boot interface.
    Cons:
It is a little annoying that each "module" of the unit boots independently. This means if you are listening to the Radio you get instant turn on when your car is on. Navigation is booted up separate and requires 2 key presses before it loads, likewise for DVD.

    Nice and easy to use

I really like the units from Valor. This is my second one so far. This one looks great and so far I'm really liking it. the navigation system is very easy to use, accurate, and has been spot on for the trips I've made. The text to speech voice is great, and very helpful when you're in an unfamiliar area. It's getting 5 stars from me.

    gps is lacking

I like almost everything about this unit except the quality of maps is bad. So far everything I've search for direction has been wrong or un able to find. Even using google maps to get the address the trying to in put an address and it tells me the address doesn't exist. I am dissapointed in the gps but all other functions work great.

Also I can't for the life of me figure out how to get map updates.
