Hearing an audible radar warning can make a crucial time difference when you've got to react quickly. Cobra's XRS 9770 radar detector not only gives you long-range protection against radar and laser, but it'll also announce what type of band it's detecting so you can make an informed decision without taking your eyes off the road. In addition to warnings for instant-on POP radar, the XRS 9770 also monitors two safety bands to inform you of nearby road work, emergencies, and other situations. And you can still check out the DigiView® text display for additional information when you need it.

Don't get detected
The XRS 9770 offers complete immunity to VG-2 and Spectre I radar detector detection devices, and warns you when they're nearby. The super-fast circuitry housed inside its compact chassis alerts you to threats well in advance, and you can follow the 5-level digital strength signal meter to learn how close you are to the signal's source.

Want more? How about a built-in compass?
Ever get that sinking feeling that you might be lost? The XRS 9770's electronic 8-point compass comes in handy when you're unsure of your direction. Cobra's IntelliShield® technology lets you choose three city modes that drastically reduce false alarms. The IntelliMute® feature uses your relative speed to counter false alerts, and keeps your detector free from detection. You can activate the detector's dim mode for more comfortable viewing at night.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great radar detector. I have had it about a week. I bought it to replace an older Cobra model that was stolen. My older detector was great, but this one blows it away. It detects signals from all types of radar/laser guns. I have not had too many false alerts. I get "POP" alerts from instant-on laser guns quite often, and most of the time I can't find the source patrol car, but that's not to say it's not there.. My old detector used to alert on grocery store doors and alarm systems on buildings, and I have not had that problem at all with this model. This also detects Ku band radar that isn't widely used yet in the United States. I haven't had any issues with the mounting bracket yet, but can see it giving me problems in the future. I remove the detector from the bracket every time I park my vehicle for an extended period of time to prevent theft. The bracket clip on the unit itself just doesn't feel very "solid". I am very careful doing so, but I can see how taking it on and off the bracket could wear down the plastic clip over time. This drawback isn't enough for me to give it a lower rating. This is an EXCELLENT radar detector.

Pros: Detects it all. No false alerts from motion activated doors and alarm systems.

Cons: I haven't had problems with it yet, but I can see how the mounting bracket could potentially give me future problems.

Great product

Excellent detector, audible alerts are a real plus as you don't need to take your eyes off of the road to know what is being detected and in front of you. Alerts to K and KA as much as a mile away. Detects over hills, around curves and even with concrete lane dividers. One reviewer commented about too many false alerts, but I have not seen that as a problem as some of the seemingly "false alerts" were due to patrol cars being hidden and out of easy view, on the other side of the highway and even on overpasses. Moreover, I'd rather have too many alerts than too few. I gave it 4 stars because the only minor negative was that the display is hard to see during the day, but the audible alert is very easy to hear.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading reviews on this radar detector, I have to say that it is an excellent RD. In reference to the criticism that it has too many false alerts, I'd rather have too many than too few, if in fact they really were false alerts. I have found that it alerts as far away from a patrol car w/ radar from at the least 1/4 of a mile to almost a mile away and that includes over hills, around curves and with 18 wheelers between my car and the radar. Additionally, many of the seeming false alerts are due to radar equipped patrol cars, were hidden behind buildings, signs, trees or have been off of the highway on side roads. It has never failed to miss a radar signal on a recent trip from Florida to Wyoming and back. You don't need to spend any more for a good radar detector. This one will meet your needs quite well. It is well worth the money. When I ordered it I mistakenly gave them the wrong address to send it to, as I ordered it the day we were leaving and I wanted it sent to our daughters address. I called Crutchfield after it was sent and they did everything possible and had it sent to the correct address, including contacting UPS and had it rerouted enroute. Needless to say, I believe that Crutchfields' customer service is the best of any business that I have dealt with in my 60+ years. Thank you Jason and the unknown woman who helped me sort out the rerouting. You have endeared me to be a continuing Crutchfield customer.

Great detector works almost flawless. Must run detector in city mode due to the
x band being too sensitive.

15-Band Radar/Laser Detection: The Cobra XRS 9770 detects 15 bands of radar and laser, including 2 Safety Alert Systems:

Radar Laser Safety
X band
K band
Ka Superwide
Ku band
   -Spectre IV+
LTI 20-20
ProLaser III
Stalker LIDAR

Safety Alert
Strobe Alert

XRS Technology: The XRS 9770 is equipped with Xtreme Range Superheterodyne Technology, with super-fast lock-on detection circuitry, to provide extra detection range, and the best possible advance warning to even the fastest radar guns.

Voice Alert: The XRS 9770 has a Voice Alert feature that sounds alerts with a specific voice annunciation of the signal being detected. When Voice Alert is activated, the voice also confirms all user settings when they are changed.

DigiView Text Display: The XRS 9770 is equipped with the DigiView Text Display, a scrolling, 8-character, dot-matrix display with a bright green, easy-to-read alphanumeric text readout. You can adjust the intensity of the display using the top mounted Select/Dim button. The detector has a Bright display mode for daytime driving, and 3 levels of Dim display modes: Dim for dusk driving, Dimmer for night driving, and Dark where no visual alerts will be displayed.

Instant On/Pop Mode Alert: The detector is designed to detect Instant-On speed monitoring signals, which suddenly appear at full strength. Pop Alert provides protection against K & Ka Pop mode (single pulse) radar gun signals and provides super-fast, instant-on detection. During a Pop alert, the detector will continue to detect other signals. Note: Radar guns have a much shorter range when in the Pop mode, so appropriate action should be taken immediately whenever a Pop alert is given.

Strobe Alert: The XRS 9770 will give you advanced alert of the presence and/or approach of emergency vehicles. This is a Cobra exclusive that works with the tens of thousands of emergency vehicles currently equipped with traffic light controlling strobe emitters, which activate red lights at traffic intersections in emergency high speed situations.

Safety Alert: The Cobra XRS 9770 will give you advanced alert of the presence and/or approach of emergency vehicles, trains, and road hazards from systems equipped with Safety Alert Traffic Warning System transmitters.

Visual Alerts: The display includes the type of signals detected and a vertical bar indication of the signal strength from one bar (weakest) to five bars (strongest).

Audio Alerts: The unit will sound alerts and confirm user settings with an audible tone alert. A distinctly different tone is used for each type of signal detected, and with radar bands, the tones will repeat faster as you approach the signal source.

LaserEye: The top-mounted LaserEye provides you with 360° degree detection of laser signals. When mounting the unit, you much make sure the LaserEye has a clear view to the front and rear of the vehicle.

VG-2/Spectre I/IV+ Protection: The XRS 9770 will alert you when VG-2, Spectre I, and the new Spectre IV+ radar detector detection (RDD) are in use near your vehicle. The unit is undetectable by VG-2 and Spectre I devices, but can be spotted by Spectre IV+ RDDs. During an alert, the unit continues to detect other signals. You can choose whether or not you want the unit to show VG-2 and Spectre I and IV+ alerts and whether or not to sound audible alerts.

Easy-Set Programming: Easy-Set Programming gives you quick and easy access to all the settings on the unit. The Menu is divided into two sections:

  • User Settings: City Mode, IntelliMute/IntelliMute Pro, iMute/iMute Pro Activation Set Point, Auto Mute, Voice/Tone Setting, Display Timeout, Magnetic Compass, SmartPower, Restore Factory Settings
  • Alert Settings: Pop Detection, X-band, K-band, Ku-band, VG-2, Spectre I/IV+ Detection, Safety Alert

"System Ready" Prompt: When the unit is first powered on, the detector goes through a series of self tests. If successfully completed, a "System Ready" display prompt occurs and the unit is ready to begin detecting.

Auto/Manual Muting: When Auto Mute is On, the unit automatically reduces the audio volume of all alerts after they have sounded for four seconds. The signals will remain muted for as long as the signal is detected. When manually muting, you must press the Mute button while a signal is being received. This will reduce the volume of the alert in progress. The volume will return to normal for the next signal.

IntelliShield: The XRS 9770 features IntelliShield to reduce the number of false alerts in densely populated areas caused by microwave relay towers and automatic door openers. In addition to a Highway mode, the unit has three levels of City modes:

  • City X: sounds a single beep when the X-band signal is first detected. The alert then sounds when the signal strength reaches Level 3
  • City X Beep Off: prevents all X band audio alerts until the signal strength reaches Level 3
  • City X+K: combination of City X mode with prevention of K band audio alerts until the signal strength reads Level 2

IntelliMute: IntelliMute allows you to avoid alerts you don't need to hear because you are either stopped or moving slowly. By sensing the RPMs of the engine, IntelliMute knows that you are driving at a low speed and automatically mutes all alerts (except for strobe signals from emergency vehicles). You must first set an activation point for your engine's RPMs, and when the revs go below that point, IntelliMute begins muting. Once set, the activation point is stored in memory.

IntelliMute Pro: IntelliMute Pro prevents detection by radar detector detectors (RDDs), such as VG-2, Spectre I and Spectre IV+, when traveling at slower speeds. When IntelliMute Pro is on, and engine RPMs are below the IntelliMute Pro's activation point, the detector's radar detection circuits are turned off to prevent detection by RDDs. In addition, no alerts will be given at RPMs below the activation point.

8-Point Electronic Compass: The XRS 9770 includes a 8-point electronic compass that automatically provides an accurate direction reading.

SmartPower: The SmartPower feature, when activated, puts the unit into Standby mode for about 15 minutes after the car's engine has been turned off. After 30 minutes in Standby mode, the unit will automatically shut off.

External Speaker Jack: You can connect an external speaker or earphone if the detector is to be used in an environment with high ambient noise levels. A 2.5mm sub-mini jack is provided.

Mounting: You will get optimum performance from the detector if you mount it at a point approximately in the center of the vehicle, as low as possible on the front windshield without obstructing the view of the road to the front or rear. The detector can be mounted in two ways:

  • Dashboard Mount: Using the supplied Velcro pad, you can attach the detector to the dashboard.
  • Windshield Mount: The supplied windshield mount adheres the detector to the windshield with two suction cups. The angle can be adjusted for best visibility.
