Used this kit while replacing a double din factory unit on my 00 Toyota Tundra. Instructions included were great, real easy install and best of all it looks great and adds another storage location. Could use a small lip at the front of pocket to stop items from sliding out, but only a minor issue

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the perfect solution for me when I was installing a single-DIN stereo in my 2000 Tacoma. The only downside is that there's not much of an angle to the recess and items easily slide and fall out of it. If the bottom surface was coated in rubber, that might make a difference.

Pros: fit, ease of installation

Cons: items tend to not stay in the pocket/recess

Replaced the original pocket, which had a door. I prefer this one without the door. It gives a good place to handily store remote controls. Perfect fit, installed easily.

Pros: Handy and perfect fit.

Cons: None.

Pros: It makes for a clean, nice installation. Came with the new unit at no charge! Excellent!

Cons: Maybe could have been a little bigger with a cute door. But maybe that is not a con.

The mounting holes for the dash pocket lined up exactly with the attachment bracket from my 1996 Camry making installation very easy. The pocket is about the same size and depth as the original. With the stereo installed, it looks like it came with the car. Very satisfied.

Pros: Fit, installation instructions, look.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've purchased 4 or 5 auto receivers in the past and have been satisfied with the kits and instructions. With this latest purchase I have had to modify or fabricate to make the installation. I'm not being flippant nor boasting about my skill set (I'm a retired aircraft modification mechanic) or enjoy being critical. I really like Crutchfield. But my vehicle is an '03 Tacoma, pretty common I would think. I had to be pretty creative and accurate to make this work, not to mention the amount of time involved. I still will purchase from Crutchfield and recommend them. Will

This kit is not a bolt in kit. It will not work with the stock factory radio mounts. Called Crutchfield and was told by the teck rep that I needed to go to a recking yard to get a stock pocket. No help. Had to break out the razor knife and start carving on the face cover and install the radio the old Fashion way and hot glued the pocket in. It looks and works good.

Pros: It was free

Cons: Better be mechanically inclined and think outside the box.

This is much smaller than I expected. It is about half the length of the reciever. Furthermore the width and height are also less than I would expect. The opening itself is framed with about a quarter inch of plastic so it seems like they could easily make the opening larger. I ended up not using it because it would reduce functionality too much.

Really like this kit. It turns a double-DIN into a single easily and provides some nice storage. If the bottom was a little more angled down toward the front of the car it would be perfect. As is, without a sticky pad, things tend to fly out.

Pros: Fits the space and makes it useful when converting to a smaller stereo

Cons: Too flat, things can fly out

2002 Tacoma double cab - I took out a double high factory unit and replaced it with a pioneer deck and this pocket. Fit was good. The only fix needed was that the pocket is slick plastic and things come out of it easily when the vehicle is stopping/starting. I suggest adding something with grip to the bottom surface, or at least the edge of the pocket to stop things, like a cell phone, from flying out,

Pros: fit

Cons: slippery

My installation was in a 95 Toyota Tercel. One side of the pocket came off while sliding the new stereo into the pocket/brackets assembly. I reattached it with some gorilla glue and a clamp. I ended up not using it anyway because it does not have a lip on the front edge to keep items from sliding out when you accelerate, which the original did.

I installed this part on both of my 2 Toyota Camry's that I have. It looks great and you can also store small item in the cubby hole of the receiver kit, on one of my car's it took a while to get it to fit flush but it was probably due to the age of the car and condition that the interior is in but you can trim it down if you want too.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This fit my 2000 toyota tacoma truck with minor issue. This is more of the limitation of the Toyota truck...but with this kit, you won't be able to install the bezel that came with the head unit. It won't fit. I called customer support and the guy told me I had to make the dash opening bigger to make the HU fit. I didn't want to do that so decided to install HU without bezel. I turned out great and does not leave any gaps.

Pros:

Cons: Diagrams could have been better. I had to use the factory mounting clips to mount this kit. Diagram didn't help because it wasn't specific to my truck. Luckily I had the old mount to go off of. Otherwise, It would have taken longer to figure out how the kit would fit with my factory clips.

The problem most people seemed to have with the holes the screws go into coming off didn't happen to me. It seems that is it is a solid piece and won't just fall apart But it seems to stick out just a bit to far and makes it really hard for the trim piece on my Toyota to fit properly

Toyota single din mounting kit

Written by: Mszamp from Wakefield ri on June 16, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kit works as specified, make sure you have all of the hardware that comes with your deck, you know you always have a screws or bits left over that would be used for other applications. I had a deck that I had purchased a while back for another vehicle, I took the deck back out when I sold it. I recently purchased a used tacoma for my daughter to drive, so I ordered this kit. It was great except for the fact that it required the use of the side mount screws that came with the deck, since I had purchased it a few years back, I did not have them, and they were not easy to find in the stores. All in all good quality kit, just make sure you have all deck hardware, you will need it.

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Does not include mounting screws for deck, if you don't have them, might be a little bit of a pain, but not too bad.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does a great job adapting a single-DIN radio to a double-DIN opening. Installed with no problem, except that the screws supplied by Crutchfield did not fit the screw holes of the Kenwood radio (nor did the original Toyota screws). I had to go to Home Depot for screws that would allow me to mount the Kenwood to the dash brackets. Would you believe that metric screws wouldn't fit...I wound up using 10-24x3/8!

Pros: Looks like it was factory-installed. As always, the Crutchfield instructions were invaluable.

Cons: Dash pocket should perhaps have a narrow slot in the back to allow for the routing of an iPod or USB control cable; that would make the pocket the ideal place to put your music player while driving. I considered drilling a hole myself, but couldn't bring myself to cut up a brand-new piece.

This pocket fits and ultimately works in my Tacoma, but not without repairing first. This is a very basic "universal" pocket that Metra uses for many different vehicles. The mounting brackets are simply glued to the sides of the pocket depending on vehicle application. Mine arrived with one mounting bracket broken off due to poor gluing. I checked the strength of the other bracket, and sure enough, with a small tug it came off too. I ended up mixing up some epoxy and putting the brackets back on the pocket. Even for free I was a little disappointed.

Pros: Fits the vehicle

Cons: Very poor quality construction.

Looks quite cheap when one looks at the back side, though the visible front side and interior look OK, which is all that is going to matter after installation. I might have been disappointed if i'd explicitly paid for this, but since it was free with the receiver (head unit), i can't complain. Mechanical integrity seems OK so far (nearly one month of use).

Pros: Effectively fills the empty space when a single-DIN receiver replaces a dual-DIN.

Cons: Build quality looks cheap and rushed, but at the price as long as it holds up, should be OK. Nothing fancy about it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a nice dash pocket. Fit in the dash really nicely. One of the sides popped off of the pocket during install when I joined the head unit/receiver to the pocket with screw. Must use care during the joining of these two since there can be uneven pressure put on the plastic...important to start each screw and then tighten each slowly and evenly on all four points. These sides appear to be glued to the pocket itself. I applied super glue and clamped it for a bit and it was good to go.

Pros: Low Price

Cons: Minor mishap with the install when one of the sides popped off.

Works in a 2nd Generation Tacoma (2000)!

Written by: Dilan from CO on January 23, 2012

2000 Toyota Tacoma
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The pocket fits but needs a small modification that is actually listed in the instructions. The two tiny tabs on top of the cubby near the opening need to be cut. Super simple as a pair of wire cutters will do the trick. The instructions are somewhat off for part of the installation. It states that you need to use screws to attach the bracket to the back holes. This is false... the bracket slips over the two recessed (smaller) screw holes. This secures the back part of the bracket. The to front screws mount fine. I used the stock screws instead of the one's the cubby comes with. All in all, makes for a professional look after the install. I do wish it had a textured surface as my junk slips out of the cubby. Some grip tape helped alleviate this problem.

Pros: Looks great and fits perfectly!

Cons: Installation instructions are a bit wrong regarding the screw holes towards the back. You don't need the screws. The bracket slips over the recessed holes on the cubby securing it just fine. Also, needs a "grippier" surface. The silky smooth surface allows things to slip out and fall too easily.

Receiver works exactly as imagined. Replaced stock front and rear speakers and deck at the same time. All I really wanted from the new deck was the USB and AUX input options. Happy everything works. Addition of dash pocket under new receiver is an added bonus! I'm glad pocket was included installation was pretty easy, it just took a little coaxing because of a screw that was rubbing the nut frame. Very clean flush look in 2000 Camry. Wire harnesses saved a bunch of time, still have to make splices but provided instructions layed out everything very easy. For speakers, I had to drill new mounting holes since stock Camry housing was prefab to the old speaker. Speakers work fine, perfect entry level speakers to replace stock. Note: Reading instructions I couldn't believe how quickly the deck installation went. Not counting the time it took to splice wire harnesses, I had the old deck out and new one in less than 10 minutes. (Wire harness splicing took another 10 minutes)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1999 Toyota Camry, and bought an Alpine CDE-103BT and this pocket to replace the original double-DIN unit. This pocket is well designed, and with a little finesse, it fits perfectly. By finesse, I mean: 1. I had to trim some tabs off it to get it to fit tight to the Alpine (the provided instructions stated that this is required with some radios). 2. Once I bolted it to the stereo, I test-fit the OEM bezel and found the pocket was a little too wide. I sanded the sides with medium-grit sandpaper on a sanding block to keep them flat and slightly reduce the width of the unit. After light sanding, it fit like a glove. 3. I installed self-adhesive cut-to-fit black felt (purchased from an arts & crafts store) to line the pocket. The console of the car has this same felt (OEM equipment), so the pocket now looks like an OEM installed piece. Overall, I am very happy with it.

Sturdy construction, but the textured plastic edge and shiny plastic inside (replete with with mold marks) looks "cheap" compared to the surrounding Toyota dash. I'm sure that a factory original pocket from Toyota would look better, but of course it would probably cost a whole lot more too.

Bolted in w/ factory brackets. Holds my cell phone. Fills the hole left by the big factory unit. Cost 0 dollars. No complaints.

Does the Job

I didn't want a gaping hole in the dash after putting a single DIN head unit into a double DIN space. This does the job. It seems tough enough, but not finished very well. I scraped the sharp edges with a knife. Works fine. I put some black sticky felt on the inside and some on the backside so that CDs, USB drives, or coins, etc... would not rattle around inside. Looks professional now. It came free with my order.

This did its job of filling in the space. It looks durable and makes more sense than just a flat piece of plastic to cover a hole that the original stereo left behind. The instructions could be a little more explicit, but I managed to figure it out on the first try. A "slip proof" lining for the interior of the liner would be nice.

A Good Place for the USB Connector

An easy fit. I drilled a hole in the top left corner and routed a short USB cable through it for my thumb drive full of MP3s. That's probably better than having the drive sticking out somewhere near the radio and bumping into it with my knee or something and breaking off the connector.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The top and bottom edges were curved rather than straight, the finish on the face is mediocre, the screws provided to mount them are machine screws but there are no threads in the mounting holes (you just let the screws do their own threading, just make sure you don't overtighten), but it gets the job done - the job of filling up an otherwise gaping hole. I would give it 2 stars for quality, but the convenience of an easy factory mount (and being free with my head unit, go Crutchfield) push it to 3.

Looks great. I Had to break off the lips of the pocket to get it to fit right. Otherwise it works great. I love the extra storage.

Sure this little pocket does exactly what it is supposed to do, but there are better ones out there. The one I received does not have any sort of lip on it, so anything that I put into it just slides out when I accelerate. I had one of these installed on an older Toyota and it had the lip.

Fits above or below the radio, however you want the look to be. Super easy to install, just line up the holes and scew into new receiver. Looks great! Very clean and adds a new storage place for my Toyota Tacoma.

This handy device turned our double slot enclosure from the original manufactures' radio into a single slot with a very useful pocket handy for stowing small things. It looks nice, fit perfectly and is useful.

This little dealio fits under the new single din head unit you are going to install when replacing a Toyota pos factory double din stereo. Very nice, a welcome nice little addition to your dash to hold tickets, change, glasses, your Ipod or whatever. Very clean looking installed! It takes a few seconds to figure out exactly which mounting holes to use, but still easy enough for anyone to figure out.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As it turned out I did not use in my install Since the 1998 Toyota Sienna already had one that was a perfect fit for some of the things that my wife likes to stow there. This unit was just enough smaller that one of those items did not fit. But with the different configuration of Toyotas systems, I was glad that it was included and to see Crutchfield was on top of all the options.
