About the Focal Performance 165AS

Alexander H.
Focal 165AS

Dream speakers

Perfect sound. Discreet style. Premium construction. These are the standards that define Focal – and the reasons why listening to Focal speakers is an absolute pleasure. The Access line offers a marriage of performance and affordability, allowing you to experience the best in sound with a guilt-free conscience.

The whole package

Take Focal sound to the next level with this Access Series 165AS component system, which includes two 6-1/2" woofers, two TN43 tweeters, and two external crossovers. The DFS (dual fiberglass structure) woofer cone delivers precise mid-bass and midrange frequencies while offering deep, articulated bass. Coupled with a butyl rubber surround, the cone's all-weather durability ensures performance even in the hottest, most humid environments without distortion or warping.

Beyond tweeterdome

The aluminum inverted dome shape does a better job of dispersing high frequencies than a traditional raised dome tweeter, creating a very wide soundstage with fine resolution and exciting dynamics. Enhance stereo imaging by installing these tweeters exactly where you need them with included flush-mount hardware.

Custom crossover

This system's external crossovers ensure a seamless distribution of frequencies to the woofer and tweeter, for a totally natural sound. A 3-position tweeter level adjustment allows you to customize your high frequencies and get them just the way you like them.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

    Woofer

Cone Material: The Dual Fiberglass Structure Membrane (DFS) is a light, rigid, woven glass fiber woofer cone. The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the higher frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Basket: The woofer features an ABS basket reinforced with 20% fiberglass.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Focal, call this size speaker a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4". Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

    Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum and dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters. Focal recommends flush mounting, but the included angled cup allows surface mounting at approximately 20° or approximately 40°. The top of the angle mount cup and the bottom of the flush mount cup can be combined to create another surface mount (non-angled).

    Crossover

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality.

Tweeter Level: You can adjust the output level of the tweeter on the crossover to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB.

Crossover Slopes: The crossover uses 2nd order, 12 dB per octave low-pass and high-pass filters. The crossover frequency for both is 5,000 Hz.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.3" wide.

how many watts can they handle ?

Per their specs, they are rated 6-60 watts RMS power range (120 watts peak) I'm driving them with my stock 2021 Ford Ranger head unit. They are Great sounding as is. I would recommend an amp, I think they can handle more power easily and would sound even better. I am overall quite happy with them.

Can you mount the tweeters inside the speaker if you want to? I know they sell a component speaker also but i want to experiment with the location and want to know if these can be setup like coaxial speakers also.

No. It was not designed for this. There is already a phase plug in that spot. The tweeter can be surface mounted next to the woofer for a similar configuration.

    Q
Would one recommend driving these with the OEM VW GTI head unit? An additional Amp will come in the future, but how much performance will be lost with stock amp?

Without knowing what the head unit's wattage and amp rating it is kind of hard to say what will be lost in the mix. I have 18 speakers in 9 different settings that include1 set 165 AS Focals in my 2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback. They are situated in the front and rear door panels. But I also have 3 Focal amps that include1 four channel pushing 450 watts and two 2 channel pushing 300 hundred watts each and 1 Kenwood 750 watt amp with induction and exhaust fans as I live in southern Arizona ) . All this being with around 2450 watts with a total maximum output. Then I have with a ten inch and a twelve-inch dual voice coil subwoofer. Along with a set of 2 way Focals in the transmission tunnel wall interior covering and a set of Focal 3 way split between the doors and the upper A-pillars. and another set of Focal tweeters in between the C and D pillars. Everything in the car speaker wise is in the Focal professional Performance sereies. You cannot go wrong with a set of these speakers people are absolutely dumbfounded when they hear them perform. Even the guys that have been installing systems in cars and trucks and boats for 20 years are astounded by the sheer fidelity that they produce. With all that being said you should most certainly purchase a set of these and then if you want a more powerful experience then get a good amp that has across the board high end ability and not just power rated because those are a dime a dozen. Consult with Crutchfield for they are more than able to steer you in the right direction there. And do get a subwoofer it will make a big difference. Happy listening!!!!

I love my focals and power then with a JLAudio 4-channel amp. Focals for me are the Ferrari & Lamborghini of car audio. There's nothing preventing you from getting these speakers and powering them with your OE head unit as you have future plans to get an amp, but without one the performance will not be there without one. Maybe consider an aftermarket economical speaker as it will be much better than your stock speakers and should sound great with your factory radio. The joy of having focals installed will be lost without the sufficient power to drive them. Hope that helps your decision making.
    david  Oct 25, 2016

You can always buy converters to run your stock head unit with after market speakers. It should work if you get the correct converter, but keep in mind that you won't get as clear or as clean of a sound. You get a slight ampridge boost with aftermarket head units, so it's always smarter to use a aftermarket head unit if you can! I also like aftermarket head units because they come stock with RCA inputs so it makes installing your 2 or 4 channel amp much easier!

While it can be done, it's not a good idea. The primary reason is the risk of clipping at loud volume levels which sends a lot of high-frequency current to the tweeters. This can cause the tweeter to overheat, permanently deforming the voice coil. You don't need huge amounts of power, I do just fine in my Tacoma with a 75wpc amp that cost me about $125. Considering what you have invested in the Focals, it's a wise investment. If money is tight, buy the amp first.
    peter  Oct 19, 2016

I would not, I was using a 75 watt per channel amplifier to run them.

These speakers have a 92db sensitivity rating so they will play loud no matter what you power them with, the tweeters are very loud, I have mine set to -3db setting on the included crossover, these speakers perform well, I have two pair in my RAV4 with 125 watts rms x4 Polk audio amp, they haven't let me down for over a year now.

As far as I know are no Focal product lines that have a year by year designation They are simply a line of products that have a set standard in engineering and manufacturing quality. Recently I picked up a 10-year-old car stereo magazine(2005) at the dealership where I have my car stereo work done and there was a write up on a Focal top end amp and speaker kit. I was familiar with the newest line-up of this particular system ($8,999.00) now ($9,999.00) other than a very slight face plate makeover in 10 years the specs were very close but certainly not identical! Some really good products do not change very much if at all even in 10 years simply because there is no need. If a company sets a high enough standard in their product they sell you have no need to add a "New for this year" appellation. You will find that these speakers you are looking at are now made in China. It is not until you get into Focal"s super high-end systems that are made solely in France! China or not my install technician (10 years experience) was instantly converted when he heard these most solid sounding speakers. These were the first Focal"s he had ever installed and they were so impressive he decided he will install Focal brand speakers in his 1966 Chevy he is refurbishing. My 2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback has 2 Focal tweeters between the C&D pillars 2 sets of these speakers you are inquiring about in the front and rear doors and another set of Focal 6 inch speakers with rotating tweeters in the transmission wall in the front seats. I have had a number of good systems in my cars over the years but nothing even close to Focal. The only thing better than a Focal speaker is a really expensive Focal speaker.
