About the Focal K2 Power 165 KR2

Buck Pomerantz

K2 Power speakers — engineered for superb sound

The K2 Power 165 KR2 6-1/2" component speaker system bears the hallmarks of Focal's "Power Hi-Fi" philosophy. Nimble woofers made from Aramid and glass fibers demonstrate the control needed to reproduce delicate classical passages, yet they'll handle the power needed to drive your bass-heavy music with authority. The sturdy zinc-aluminum alloy baskets are non-magnetic so they won't interfere with the speaker's own electronics. And this 2-ohm system extracts maximum power from your stereo or amp so you'll get more punch from your system.

Inverted dome tweeter design

Inverted dome tweeter design

Focal's inverted dome tweeters act like little woofers, dispersing the highs in a wide pattern to create an exceptionally natural soundstage. K2 Power crossovers use hand-made components developed by Focal to deliver an ideal blend of the highs and lows for a dynamic stereo image. The 165 KR2's crossover features three levels of tweeter control, a tweeter "slope softening" selector, and two levels of midrange control so you can dial in the sound to your car's environment.

Important Note: These Focal K2 Power speakers use a low impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with virtually all factory and aftermarket stereos.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Woofer

K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer. This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent damping characteristics.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped aluminum phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Zamak Basket: The woofer features a cast Zamak basket. Zamak is a rigid alloy of Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper. Zamak is non-magnetic.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1-1/4" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted Kevlar dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters. Focal recommends flush mounting, but the included angled cup allows surface mounting at one of two angles; approximately 15° and approximately 40°.

Crossover

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality.

Tweeter Level: You can adjust the output level of the tweeter on the crossover to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB.

Midrange Level: Set the midrange output to High or Flat to match their position in the car. When the mids are installed low in the door, some of the output is absorbed by the upholstery and they benefit from the High output setting.

Crossover Slopes: The crossover uses 3rd order, 18 dB per octave low-pass and high-pass filters. The crossover frequency for both is 3,800 Hz.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide.

Q
Can I put these focal speakers and a subwoofer in the rear deck while mounting cheaper kicker speakers in front?. Will they sound great?

I hope this is a troll question. wouldnt make any sense pitting soundquality speakers in the back to drowned out by the sub and have cheap speakers in the front. the tweeters also wouldnt be facing towards your ear so your losing alot of sound, having them on the rear deck. but to simply answer your question they will sound great even if you mounted them on the outside of your car
colin  Jul 21, 2017
A
Think about your car as a concert stage or a group of musicians playing in front of you. At a performance you are not surrounded by the musicians. You should put the Focal K2's up front and the sub woofer where it will fit, save your money on the kickers. Never mix good with not so good , like taking a not so good drink and mixing it with a great drink, you only make a great thing not so good

The better speakers always go to create the front stage. These Focal are leagues above anything Kicker produces. And have the focal tweeters mounted near the A pillar base, not in the kick panel or door bottom.

These are high-end speakers and should not be wasted in a deck. You want these up front where they're superior sound quality can be heard. If you want rear fill, you can toss some cheap speakers in the back.
jason  Jul 20, 2017

I recommend placing kr2's on front. Does not make sense to place your superior speakers in the rear. You will hear basically The kickers in front only and will overshadow the kr2's
leslie  Jul 20, 2017

I wouldn't you always want your better mids and highs in front
rafael  Jul 19, 2017

I have had the focal polyglass, K2, and KR2 components, and they all produce high quality sound no matter what type of music you listen to. I do find that you want to put your best speakers up front because the cheaper ones will just drown out the good speakers. Maybe try using the KR2's up front and a subwoofer in the rear. You could probably get away with mounting everything in the rear deck also. Make sure you have a quality amp for the mids and highs!
kyle  Jul 19, 2017
A
No. The better speakers should be in front of you. Rear speakers are just for fill. Move the Kicker speakers to the rear and put these in the front.

good afternoon i had the K2's installed in the door with a sub in the trunk. The tweeter was mounted at eye level next to the windshield. I think you would really want the tweeter forward for excellent staging. I have no speakers in the rear deck; there is no need. There is plenty of volume. These are my second pair of K2's because they are amazing.
robert  Jul 19, 2017

You could install that setup, but I would install the Focal's in the front, and the Kicker's in the rear deck. Most of your soundstage will come from the front speakers and it's better to have the Focal's for this purpose. I installed the Focal K2 Power's in the front doors of my truck (4 door, crew cab), and a set of less expensive Focal coaxial speakers in the rear doors, and the combination sounds great. Just make sure to buy an amp that can send a clean signal to the Focal's. I purchased a Focal 4 channel, and Focal 2 channel amps to run these speakers after talking with the Crutchfield sales staff. I've been very happen with the recommendation and performance of the system.

Q
Can I power these with the Kicker PF150SC15 VSS Powerstage amp? If I understand it this amp is only pushing 50 watts at 4ohms.

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.
