About the Focal K2 Power 165KRX2

Buck Pomerantz

K2 Power speakers — engineered for superb sound

The K2 Power 165KRX2 6-1/2" component speaker system bears the hallmarks of Focal's "Power Hi-Fi" philosophy. Nimble woofers made from Aramid and glass fibers demonstrate the control needed to reproduce delicate classical passages, yet they'll handle the power needed to drive your bass-heavy music with authority. The sturdy zinc-aluminum alloy baskets are non-magnetic so they won't interfere with the speaker's own electronics. And this 2-ohm system extracts maximum power from your stereo or amp so you'll get a little more punch from your system.

At Focal, all that matters is music. Focal's sound gurus engage in intensive listening sessions as they design a new line of speakers, making it their mission to create products that deliver uncanny realism, sweeping dynamics, and breathtaking depth. During the hands-on production process, they test every model meticulously to ensure that they meet Focal's exacting standards.

Inverted dome tweeter design

Inverted dome tweeter design

Focal's 2" inverted dome tweeters act like little woofers, dispersing the highs in a wide pattern to create an exceptionally natural soundstage. K2 Power crossovers use hand-made components developed by Focal to deliver an ideal blend of the highs and lows for a dynamic stereo image. The 165KRX2's crossover features three levels of tweeter control, a tweeter "slope softening" selector, and two levels of midrange control so you can dial in the sound to your car's environment.

Important Note: These Focal K2 Power speakers use a low impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with virtually all factory and aftermarket stereos.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Woofer

K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer. This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent damping characteristics.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped aluminum phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Zamak Basket: The woofer features a cast Zamak basket. Zamak is a rigid alloy of Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper. Zamak is non-magnetic.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1-9/16" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The TN53K tweeter is an Aramid fiber inverted dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions. The dispersion is controlled by the twin radius wave guides to improve staging and directivity.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted. Focal recommends flush mounting and the flush mount cup is built onto the tweeter housing. The included angled cup allows surface mounting at approximately 30°.

Crossover

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality.

Tweeter Level: You can adjust the output level of the tweeter on the crossover to -6 dB, -3 dB, or 0 dB.

Midrange Level: Set the midrange output to High or Flat to match their position in the car. When the mids are installed low in the door, some of the output is absorbed by the upholstery and they benefit from the High output setting.

Crossover Slopes: The crossover allows slope adjustment of both the low-pass and high-pass filters. The woofer can be run full range and use its natural mechanical roll off, or be crossed over with a 12 dB per octave slope. The tweeter can be crossed over with a 12 dB or 18 dB per octave slope. The crossover frequency for both is 4,700 Hz.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide.

I installed "Stinger SPW516BK per foot 16 Gauge Speaker Wire Black" when I installed mine. 16 gauge was recommended when I spoke with customer support. Great sound quality!

They used to call it monster wire. I don't remember exactly but I believe its around 4 gauge. My amp is a FOCAL 4160-4.

Q
Which dimension(s) will not allow these speakers to work in my 2014 Toyota Corolla LE?

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your vehicle in more detail. They can qualify your 2014 Corolla model to determine if the Focal's will fit; and if not they'll be able to explain why. Hope that helps!

Q
Does anyone know the crossover frequency for the crossovers and the frequency range for the tweeter? Thanks!!

A
Unfortunantly Focal only list the system spec of 70-20k not individually per speaker. Id try to contact a local installer near you who carries them. If they have ran them active off a digital sound processer like a audison bit one or something like that they should know. Or just do what i did and install everything yourself and have a high end shop tune it all. Cost me about 5-6 hundred but when your spending 4 or 5k in equipment not counting your install time it doesnt seem that bad.

They are 6.75 had to use an adapter from 6.50 to 6.75 to fit in my Harley

I did an exact measurement from edge to edge and it shows exactly 6.5 which surprises me since I was told they are 6.75, and in fact a spacer was used to install in the oem 6.5 opening. soooo, I am simply not sure, but the speaker without the cover measures exactly 6.5.

i got these speakers and running them on a pdx f6 , the tweeters are too bright what amp do u guys recommend ? price range 400-1000

I am not sure about the role the amp plays in the harshness. I agree that AB amp is a better choice for components but that I also experienced some ear fatigue with these (JL HD600/4 amp, which is a great amp). I have read that the new Focal ES has a different tweeter meant to address the harshness, not sure if that is accurate. What I did was tweeter delete from these and added in Morel Supremo Piccolo tweeter with Audison amp for the tweeters only, and the result is truly wonderful, everything I hoped for and more actually, the best of both (Focal and Morel) worlds.

The Alpine PDX series are very bright, Class-D amps, with a huge deficiency in the mids and vocals. D-Class amps really shouldn't be considered when using components as high end as the Focal KRX2. AB class amps are larger and run hotter, but they will sound far better with a set of high-end component. I experienced an identical issue with an Alpine PDX-5, and my sound improved tenfold, when I switched to a slightly older AB Class Alpine V12 series amp. The newer D class amps have probably improved some, but probably not enough to run with top grade components like these. I'd stick with a high-end AB class amp by Focal, JL, Audison, etc., for KRX2 components.
