The R-165S2's woofers feature a central phase plug for enhanced sound dispersion.
Listening to Focal speakers is an absolute pleasure, and now you can do it with a guilt-free conscience. Focal's Auditor Series speakers offer solid performance at a competitive price.
Make no mistake, Focal's Auditor Series R-165S2 component system will put your factory speakers to shame. Years of weather-damage and even the most conservative listening will degrade the paper cone speakers that came with your car. Focal built the two 6-3/4" woofers, two tweeters, and two external crossovers to withstand that kind of damage while delivering robust sound.
The woofer's polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround will deliver a new richness of bass and midrange articulation, and the cone features a phase plug for better sound dispersion. Prepare to be moved by the bright highs and crisp detail broadcast by the "Silk Aluminum" tweeters, and gain a whole new appreciation for driving your car again.
This system's external crossovers ensure a seamless distribution of frequencies to the woofer and tweeter, for a totally natural sound. The crossovers are prewired and compact enought to fit in some pretty tight places. With included mounting hardware, you'll have the tools you need to enhance stereo imaging by installing these tweeters in a good spot high up in your doors, in the sail panel, or on the dash.
Installation note #1: The package includes flush-mount tweeter housings, but no flush-mount hardware. You'll have to devise a way to hold those flush-mount housings in place.
Installation note #2: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

I bought two sets of these components for the front and back of my Optima. They're all running off of a 4 channel Alpine pushing about 55-60RMS to each pair. I have the signal filtered at the head unit at 100HZ and a -12dB slope falling off into lower frequencies, and am not using the amplifier crossover at all. Gain is set to nominal, with no bass boost. The result is crystal clear audio, solid bass response, and louder than I can listen to with no distortion at all. I haven't really tried to use them for tons of midbass as I have a sub that does all of that for me. Awesome set of speakers and a definite upgrade from my old Polk Db series. Added bonus that the crossovers on these are tiny and can be mounted just about anywhere with no problem.
Pros: Great speakers, unique style, and easy to hide the crossover just about anywhere.
Cons: I guess the low RMS rating might be problematic for some 5 channel amps if you want a huge sub.
I purchased this item, being familiar with Focal mids in the past, really impressed me, the highs and mids still clear.
Pros: Easy install, clear sound, and cost effective.
Good but not great. The mids and lows are great the tweeters are like nails down a chalk board I am replacing them
This is my third component speaker set up and I must say this beats my other builds by far. I have used Infinity Kappa's and Image Dynamics components in my last two cars and they worked out very nicely but I wanted to take a shot at Focals. I hear nothing but good things about the company and before I drop nearly half a grand on there high end models i wanted to see how an entry level system sounded. Man oh man do these Auditor speakers sound amazing. They are better than my previous two builds in every single way. Do not think for a minute that just because these are an entry level model they are not gonna preform like the big boys. The sound is out of this world. Super clear, super crisp, and makes you feel like your actually inside the music. I don't even have them amp'ed at the moment. There just running off my stock navigation heaedunit in my 2013 Jeep Wrangler unlimited Sahara. Oh another thing Crutchfield says they do not fit but they do, the mounting holes for the stock speakers are a three hole triangle design and these speakers have like 8 mounting holes. I just drilled new holes in the speaker mounts and screwed them in. I have a Kenwood Excelon ZR900-5 amp that I ordered as well from Crutchfield which will be powering these puppies very soon but let me tell you they are working just fine off factory power. Much louder than stock alpine speaker system. All in all inf your looking for an amazing sounding speaker for under $200 these are them period.
Pros: Crisp, Clear, Loud, works with stock power, Blown away by these.
Cons: None whatsoever other than Crutchfield said they were not a fit for my car but i took a chance and they worked out perfect.
Presently hooked up to stock radio and I am a bit disappointed. Eventually, I will be getting after market head unit and amp, which I am sure will help. Week in the mid bass character which I am assuming has more to do with factory radio then the speaker. Mostly, I am unhappy with tweeter. For jazz, it sounds pretty good.with clean crisp horns. But for anything with vocals, it is too harsh. Every "S" cuts right through you and that is without much volume. At higher levels it can be downright painful. I'm still experimenting with tweeter locations. Owners manual says it should be as far away from door speakers as possible and recommend the dash. First, i tried mounting to the window sail trim, aimed right at me and that seems to be the worst. I've read that most recommend as close to the woofer as possible, so I am going to give that a try but not thrilled about having to remove the door panels again. Right now I still have it in the window sail but aimed away from me. It is better but still harsh at anything but low volume.
Pros: clear crisp highs work well for jazz. (horns, cymbals, etc.) . Definitely hits the highest portion of the frequency range. Sturdy build.
Cons: tweeters too harsh for most vocals. Ear piercing at anything other than low volume.
Fairly easy install. Used the connector that came from Crutchfield and then just wired to the cross over. You need to cut the harness to the OEM tweeter and keep the connector in the OEM harness to do this. Once I worked this out it went really easy. I installed the Focal tweeter in the black OEM plastic grill in the top of the door and just worked the size with files until the tweeter was a hard push fit. Had no issues with it since the install. Overall really pleased with the quality of the sound and I do not have to have the volume up as loud to hear my music clearly.
Pros: Crutchfield help with choosing this. Sound quality and looks
Cons: Wiring diagrams are a little lacking for the component install, but still not that bad if you stop and think about it.
Great sound, great price, great service
These are great speakers at a good price. You'll hear high details in your music that you were missing before.
Pros: Fair price for a great product. Amazing sound quality, and very nice design as usual by Focal.
Cons: I have no cons for this product.
Awesome speakers! Very clear and crisp highs. Highly recommended
Pros: Very clear highs
These speakers are amazing. The sound is incredible for the price. If you want great sound clarity and base this is the way to go. Low price option even thought it is a bit more expensive than some choices on this level it is worth it. I am running them on just a Sony 5100bt deck and even at high volumes theybstay clear. So clear in fact that you can still hold a mid level conversation while listening to loud music. I can't wait to get them amped to hear what they can do. After I put GT Mat on all four doors. Now about the installation. What a major pain. The brackets for the speakers them selves don't really fit the speakers or the car without modification. I know they make Subaru specific speaker mounts but seriously these were for some Chevy aveo or something. The screws and the clips to mount the speakers were too long and there were no instructions as to how to make this equipment work. I ended up cutting the screws after I mounted the speakers. And then put foam from original speakers against the mounting surface to keep from damaging the door. I put the screws in the other speaker in from the bottom and cut them as well. The crossover needs to be spliced in as well. So the adapter wires are pretty much useless unless you want the save the factory connector( which I did just for kicks.) Get better mount brackets for Subaru before you do install.or make your own.
Pros: Overall excellent speakers. Insane level of clarity and beautiful mids and highs with some lows to mix in. Look awesome as well
Cons: Installation gear is ridiculous for a 2009 Subaru impreaza. Get that together Crutchfield. Almost all Subaru impreza owners replace there stereos because they are horrible from the factory.
1st off I have Polk DXI 6500 in My car. I thought they were great until I put the Focal 165s2 in my sons van. They sound awesome, the highs and lows are very well balanced. Now that it was time to replace the stereo in my truck. there was never a doubt what was going in. Focal 165s2.
Cons: If i was to complain about anything it would be that there is no bracket to push against the back of the door panel to flush mount the tweeters.
Easy to install
Pros: Sound is great
Bought this set, installing it was a bit of a pain (Aveo comes with 4" factory... but...) Anyway, after a bit of struggle we got'em installed and boy, was it worth it!!! Excellent sound, the only way to better this is spending more than $500 for better Focals...
Pros: Sound Quality
Focal is the way to go, period.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the higher frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.
Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.
Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Focal, call this size speaker a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.
Tweeter Mounting: The tweeters can be flush mounted, surface mounted, or surface mounted at an angle (approximately 30°) using the included adapters. Once installed in any of the housings, the tweeter will pivot approximately 15° in any direction.
Note: Although the tweeters are shipped in their flush mount housings, no flush mount hardware is included. A method of holding the housings in place must be fabricated.

Crossover: The input and output wires are attached to the crossover. The 19" input wires are not terminated (bare wire). Both the woofer and tweeter output wires are 10" long and terminated with quick slides to easily attach to the drivers. The crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Focal brand, price and wattage range. [ Bradley May 21, 2016 ]
Previous experience and the knowledge that these are high quality speakers with a fabulous sound. [ R Feb 23, 2016 ]
I picked these speakers before all of the numbers matched up perfectly to my system. RMS wattage, size, frequency response and sensitivity. I am also a huge fan of Focal products. [ Justin Dec 04, 2015 ]
They should perform pretty well. When I installed these in my Kia Optima - which had the standard six speaker setup with no external amplifier - I also was wondering if they were going to work out. I was pleasantly surprised, as they were louder and cleaner and WAY better sounding than the stock speakers. [ Patrick R. Apr 04, 2016 ]
I'm not 100% how well they would work with a factory amp, mine are run off an aftermarket amp, and to be totally honest I'm not hugely impressed with them like I was hoping to be. That's my honest opinion [ JACOB D Mar 31, 2016 ]
Well they did work well with my factory stock amplifier and I did not have the upgrade sony system in my Ford Focus. I equate the improvement to something like removing the cotton balls from my ears - Yes, clearer mids and highs, slight boost in bass. [ JOHN Mar 31, 2016 ]
It will work with your factory system. Although factory systems even though amplified will not output as much wattage as an aftermarket deck or amplifier. You really should look into seeing if they make a dash kit for your vehicle. I honestly think you should always start with the source! If you are really set in not changing your factory deck, an aftermarket amplifier will compliment this focal component set. You may not get the most potential out of it because you would have to run high-low converters for your signal. Even though a entry series it can handle a decent amount of wattage without distortion. [ Justin Mar 31, 2016 ]
I installed these in a 2015 Subaru legacy with stock headunit and they worked well. [ Bradley Mar 31, 2016 ]
Probably not a Good idea because most stock systems use some kind of equalization tailor-made to the acoustics and speakers they came with... [ IVAN Mar 31, 2016 ]
Personnally I'd try to maxx out the rms rating or at least get close to it. I had them on a old school Orion xtr series amp giving them 100 plus watts per crossover and again this is rms wattage and even with the gain cut way back to give alot of headroom I think it was still too much power for them as I eventually blew the crossovers on both sides. So they might be O.K. on head unit power but keep in mind in my experience if you starve them too much you'll actually blow them alot faster than giving them too much but like I said they don't seem to be terribly power hungry. I'd probably shoot for around 40 to 50 watts per side and probably wouldn't go more than say 70 maybe 75 again rms per side. All components usually want more than what even a good head unit puts out roughly 15 to 20 watts per channel. If you're set on not adding an amp I"D probably go with the coaxial version instead as their usually designed to work with less power due to the tweeter being mounted to the woofer. Those speakers did have tweeters with a really harsh output at moderate to high volume levels. To the point of hurting your ears. There's no attenuation adjustment on the crossovers either. They sound incredible at lower volume levels. But if you like to crank it up from time to time you might wanna wait and save up to get a higher-end line of Focals and add a decent amp to them. [ Josh Mar 30, 2016 ]
Yes absolutely! I replaced the factory mids and tweets in a 2015 grand Cherokee with these and they sound great and have more volume than the factory speakers. [ Bryce Mar 30, 2016 ]
Yes I think it did [ WILLIAM Jul 29, 2014 ]
