The R-165S2's woofers feature a central phase plug for enhanced sound dispersion.

Listening to Focal speakers is an absolute pleasure, and now you can do it with a guilt-free conscience. Focal's Auditor Series speakers offer solid performance at a competitive price.

Time for a change

Make no mistake, Focal's Auditor Series R-165S2 component system will put your factory speakers to shame. Years of weather-damage and even the most conservative listening will degrade the paper cone speakers that came with your car. Focal built the two 6-3/4" woofers, two tweeters, and two external crossovers to withstand that kind of damage while delivering robust sound.

The woofer's polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround will deliver a new richness of bass and midrange articulation, and the cone features a phase plug for better sound dispersion. Prepare to be moved by the bright highs and crisp detail broadcast by the "Silk Aluminum" tweeters, and gain a whole new appreciation for driving your car again.

Crossover to a new dimension

This system's external crossovers ensure a seamless distribution of frequencies to the woofer and tweeter, for a totally natural sound. The crossovers are prewired and compact enought to fit in some pretty tight places. With included mounting hardware, you'll have the tools you need to enhance stereo imaging by installing these tweeters in a good spot high up in your doors, in the sail panel, or on the dash.

Installation note #1: The package includes flush-mount tweeter housings, but no flush-mount hardware. You'll have to devise a way to hold those flush-mount housings in place.

Installation note #2: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Features

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the higher frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Focal, call this size speaker a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Tweeter Mounting: The tweeters can be flush mounted, surface mounted, or surface mounted at an angle (approximately 30°) using the included adapters. Once installed in any of the housings, the tweeter will pivot approximately 15° in any direction.

Note: Although the tweeters are shipped in their flush mount housings, no flush mount hardware is included. A method of holding the housings in place must be fabricated.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Mounting Height 0.4" 1.24" 1.735"
Depth 0.835" screw depth screw depth
Frame Diameter 2.357" 1.985" 1.985" x 1.9"
Cutout Diameter 1.981" N/A N/A

Crossover: The input and output wires are attached to the crossover. The 19" input wires are not terminated (bare wire). Both the woofer and tweeter output wires are 10" long and terminated with quick slides to easily attach to the drivers. The crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 2-7/8" (3-1/8" including wires)
  • Height: 7/8"
  • Depth: 1-5/8"

Q
Would these components work well with a factory amplifier only? I have a 15 Ford Edge with the stock Sony system and would like to upgrade the mids and tweeters.

They should perform pretty well. When I installed these in my Kia Optima - which had the standard six speaker setup with no external amplifier - I also was wondering if they were going to work out. I was pleasantly surprised, as they were louder and cleaner and WAY better sounding than the stock speakers.

I'm not 100% how well they would work with a factory amp, mine are run off an aftermarket amp, and to be totally honest I'm not hugely impressed with them like I was hoping to be. That's my honest opinion

Well they did work well with my factory stock amplifier and I did not have the upgrade sony system in my Ford Focus. I equate the improvement to something like removing the cotton balls from my ears - Yes, clearer mids and highs, slight boost in bass.

It will work with your factory system. Although factory systems even though amplified will not output as much wattage as an aftermarket deck or amplifier. You really should look into seeing if they make a dash kit for your vehicle. I honestly think you should always start with the source! If you are really set in not changing your factory deck, an aftermarket amplifier will compliment this focal component set. You may not get the most potential out of it because you would have to run high-low converters for your signal. Even though a entry series it can handle a decent amount of wattage without distortion.

I installed these in a 2015 Subaru legacy with stock headunit and they worked well.

Probably not a Good idea because most stock systems use some kind of equalization tailor-made to the acoustics and speakers they came with...

Personnally I'd try to maxx out the rms rating or at least get close to it. I had them on a old school Orion xtr series amp giving them 100 plus watts per crossover and again this is rms wattage and even with the gain cut way back to give alot of headroom I think it was still too much power for them as I eventually blew the crossovers on both sides. So they might be O.K. on head unit power but keep in mind in my experience if you starve them too much you'll actually blow them alot faster than giving them too much but like I said they don't seem to be terribly power hungry. I'd probably shoot for around 40 to 50 watts per side and probably wouldn't go more than say 70 maybe 75 again rms per side. All components usually want more than what even a good head unit puts out roughly 15 to 20 watts per channel. If you're set on not adding an amp I"D probably go with the coaxial version instead as their usually designed to work with less power due to the tweeter being mounted to the woofer. Those speakers did have tweeters with a really harsh output at moderate to high volume levels. To the point of hurting your ears. There's no attenuation adjustment on the crossovers either. They sound incredible at lower volume levels. But if you like to crank it up from time to time you might wanna wait and save up to get a higher-end line of Focals and add a decent amp to them.

Yes absolutely! I replaced the factory mids and tweets in a 2015 grand Cherokee with these and they sound great and have more volume than the factory speakers.
