A classic woofer with a new twist

The 6-1/2" woofer uses Focal's classic "W" sandwich cone design to reproduce your music with incredible accuracy. The nimble Kevlar and glass-fiber woofers demonstrate the control needed to play delicate classical passages, yet they'll handle the power needed to drive your bass-heavy tracks with authority. Focal adds a new Tuned Mass Damper (TMD®) rubber surround which minimizes harmonic distortion for the cleanest midrange possible. Focal also distinguishes this system by incorporating an aluminum phase plug in the woofer for extended frequency response.

A redesigned tweeter

The separate 13/16" aramid fiber tweeter employs a unique "M"-shaped inverted dome design that disperses the highs with remarkable precision, all the way up to 22,000 Hz. The K2 Power crossovers use hand-made components developed by Focal to deliver an ideal blend of the highs and lows for a dynamic stereo image. Three levels of tweeter control let you dial in the sound to your car's environment.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Woofer

K2 Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich composite consisting of a foam core, a structural glass fiber bottom layer, and a Kevlar top layer. This combination of materials results in a rigid, light weight cone with excellent damping characteristics.

Surround: Focal's patented butyl rubber TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) surround helps control unwanted resonances, providing a clean and neutral midrange with very low harmonic distortion.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1-1/4" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Focal, call this size woofer a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size as a 6-3/4". Please enter you vehicle information to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome: The "M" profile, Aramid fiber, inverted dome tweeter is designed to increase precision at very high frequencies. The push-pull motor also damps acoustic resonances on the back of the membrane and extends the low end of the frequency response.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be surface or flush mounted using the included adapters, or the trim ring can be removed and the protective washers added for mounting in a factory tweeter location. The included angled cup allows surface mounting at one of two angles; approximately 60° and approximately 40°.

Crossover

Components: Focal uses audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors to ensure high definition and a dynamic sound quality. Thermal camera imaging is used to optimize component power dissipation, improve reliability, and lower temperature.

Slope: The high-pass crossover slope is 12 dB/octave. A switch allows you to choose between 12 dB/octave and 6 dB/octave slopes for the low-pass crossover. The crossover point for both is 3,500 Hz.

Tweeter Level: A three position switch on the crossover allows you to adjust the output level of the tweeter to -3 dB, 0 dB, or +3 dB.

Tweeter Shelf: Another switch on the crossover turns on/off a high-frequency boost, designed to improve definition.

Bi-amp Inputs: Each crossover has bi-amp inputs, one input for the tweeter and one for the woofer. When using only two amplifier channels the crossover inputs must be shorted together using two short pieces of speaker wire. Focal recommends using four amplifier channels to bi-amp the speakers for the improved dynamic range and to present an easier load for the amp(s) to drive.

Wiring: The inputs and outputs are set screw terminals; they will accept bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Customer Q&A

Q
Can these replace my stock Bose speakers without adding an amp? I just want to upgrade my speakers. nothing more.
albert  Jul 29, 2022
1 answer
A
If you have a vehicle that these physically fit in, and you have the 2 Ohm factory Bose speakers you can use these fantastic Focal ES 165k2 Power Series components as a replacement if you'd like Albert. These of course would sound incredible on an amp, but they have a high sensitivity and only require a minimum wattage of 6 watts. You'll see a major improvement in sound quality even using the OEM Bose amp, and you can always add an amp later on if you feel you need! Depending on your exact vehicle, we may have other 2 ohm options that can be used so don't forget you can always give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 and an Advisor can help look!

Q
should these speakers be considered if paired with the Alpine KTA-450 amp bridged to 100 Watts RMS or would the Focal 4 ohm ES 165 K2 be the better choice?
michael  Jun 14, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Michael, and thank you for your question. Most all 12 volt amplifiers when bridged are only stable down to 4 ohms. The Alpine KTA-450 is bridgeable, but only 4 ohm stable, so for your application, you would want the 4 ohm version of the Focal ES 165 K2s.
hogan  Jun 14, 2022 (Staff)
Q
Can I run these with a focal impulse 4.320 amp? Already have one installed using with focal access 165. Happy to upgrade amp later, but want to do in stages for financial reasons.
agsound  Jun 06, 2022

A
Thank you for the question on those Focal K2s. They are a bit power hungry, so an amp upgrade will make them sound better. They are 2 ohms, and the Impulse 55x4 channel amp will actually put out a good 80 watts RMS at 2 ohms. I think you will be fine with that amplifier.
hogan  Jun 06, 2022 (Staff)
Q
What is the power handling of each individual speaker? If I wanted to run these in an active setup with my DSP and not utilize the included crossovers.
kellen  Sep 25, 2021
1 answer
A
I have these run active with an Audiocontrol D-6.1200. At 2 ohms I have 200 watts going to each mid bass and 125 going to each tweeter at 4 ohms. The mid bass are rated at 100 or 125 and the tweets are around 30 but they can take way more power. I've been driving them daily for a year with that much power. As long as you tune your amp well, these speakers can take a pounding.
michael  Sep 26, 2021
Q
If you short these for a 2 channel will this make it a 4 ohm load? I would like to run 2 sets of these on a 4 channel JL VX400/4I or should I run them on the VX800/8I? The tweeters aren't rated for 100 watts so I'm thinking the 800 would be a little much.
robert  Apr 08, 2021
1 answer
A
They will remain a 2 ohm load when the bi-amp inputs ae shorted together. Both of those amps will work with these component speakers and the VX800/8i is the type that can run two sets of these component speakers the way Focal recommends for best performance.
jason  Apr 25, 2021 (Staff)
Q
What would be the best amp to run these bi-amp components in the front doors, and the Focal EC165k coaxial speakers in the rear?
russell  May 20, 2020
1 answer
A
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.
