About the Focal FPS 1500

Buck Pomerantz

Focal Power Symmetric Amplifiers

The FPS 1500 mono subwoofer amplifier delivers up to 550 watts RMS to a 2-ohm sub — plenty enough to fill most vehicles with clean and powerful bass. This amp can handle low-impedance loads, so you can power a 1-ohm sub with 800 RMS watts of thunder. Low-pass and subsonic filters, a bass boost, and a phase switch let you tailor the sound to complement your vehicle and sub enclosure.

Focal Power Symmetric Amplifiers

Focal studied the interaction between speakers and amplifiers so that their FPS Series amps can make your speakers sound their absolute best. Focal makes no compromises when it comes to the design and internal components in their amplifiers, so you'll get reliable, high-fidelity reproduction for your music.

FPS 1500

1-ohm stable

The FPS 1500 mono subwoofer amplifier delivers up to 550 watts RMS to a 2-ohm sub — plenty enough to fill most vehicles with clean and powerful bass. This amp can handle low-impedance loads, so you can power a 1-ohm sub with 800 RMS watts of thunder. Low-pass and subsonic filters, a bass boost, and a phase switch let you tailor the sound to complement your vehicle and sub enclosure.

Pure signal, superior sound

The power supply in the FPS 1500 uses a unique circuit design to ensure stable performance under any conditions. A heavy heatsink with a thermostat-controlled, progressive-speed fan keeps all the parts running cool. Focal's engineers stripped all signal paths of side-tracking circuits, so your music makes its way through the amp with maximum fidelity and minimum interference. Dynamic soft clipping allows an ultra-clean signal to pass to your subs while protecting them from destructive "clipped" distortion.

FPS High Cap

Plug-in capacitor

An optional High Cap outboard capacitor module plugs directly into the amp, smoothing out any power fluctuations caused by sudden system demands, so you enjoy consistent, superb sound quality. The FPS 1500 amplifier accepts one High Cap module.

Features

Class-D Amplifier Design: The Focal FPS 1500 is a mono-channel class D amplifier offering 320W RMS into 4 ohms, or 750W RMS into 1 ohm at 0.8% THD+N.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The FPS 1500's power ratings are measured according to the strict standards dictated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even if they come from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging.

  • CEA 2006 Rating: 320 watts x 1-channel in 4-ohms @ 20 to 2,000 Hz with 1% THD+N

1-Ohm Stable: The amplifier is stable at 4, 2, and 1-ohms.

  • 2-Ohm Rating: 550 watts x 1-channel in 2-ohms @ 1kHz with 0.4% THD
  • 1-Ohm Rating: 800 watts x 1-channel in 1-ohm @ 1kHz with 0.8%

Soft-Clipping: The amplifier's dynamic soft clipping feature protects your connected speakers from distortion.

Controlled Cooling System: The Focal FPS 1500 utilizes a progressive controlled cooling system to regulate the amplifier's temperature by controlling air flow through an active fan and integrated cooling fins. Even before the thermo-regulated 3-1/8" low-noise cooling fan begins rotating at 122°F, the "T" shape of the amplifier's cooling fins permits 17% of active surface heat dissipation while guaranteeing extreme rigidity to the chassis.

Note: The cooling system only works when the amplifier temperature exceeds 122°F. The rotation speed of the cooling system depends on the amplifier's temperature.

Protection Circuitry: The Focal FPS 1500 amplifier employs the following protection circuits- short circuit, thermal overload, over voltage, polarity reversal.

LED Indicators: The green LED "Power" indicator means the amplifier is on and operating properly. The red LED "Protect" indicator  means that the amplifier has shut-down and is under protection.

Anti-vibration Feet: The Focal amplifier is equipped with four integrated damping rubber feet to resist vibration.

High-Cap Compatible (optional): The optional Focal High-Cap (091FPSCAP, sold separately) is an external power supply module. Once connected to the Focal amplifier, it increases the amplifier's power supply. The resulting benefit is a higher-fidelity audio signal from the Focal amplifier and overall better music performance, with enhanced dynamic behavior, improved speaker control and punchier bass.

Controls

Front-mounted Controls: The amplifier has controls conveniently mounted on the front panel.

Gain Control: You can adjust the level of the input signal with this rotary control. Range is 0.2 Volts to 5.0 Volts.

Low-pass Filter: Using the rotary control, you can select a cutoff frequency between 50 Hz and 500 Hz. The low-pass filter has a slope of 12 dB/octave.

Direct Mode: If you are using an external low-pass crossover, you can defeat the amplifier's low-pass crossover, so that the audio signal of the Focal FPS 1500 is directly amplified without any further crossover adjustments.

Note: In Direct Mode, the FPS 1500 has a frequency response of 10 to 2,500 Hz.

Subsonic Filter: This two-way switch lets you turn on or off the 20 Hz subsonic filter. The subsonic filter has a slope of 24 dB/octave. The subsonic filter helps to filter out extremely low bass frequencies that may cause distortion.

Bass Boost: The bass boost, centered at 45 Hz, is variable between 0 dB and +9 dB, using this rotary control.

Phase: This features lets you set the amplifier's Phase to 0 (normal) or 180 (reverse), to better match the sound output of your system.

Wired Bass Knob: The Focal FPS 1500 comes with a wired bass-level control knob. The bass-level is adjustable from -9 to +9 dB. The bass-level knob also features a mute button to completely attenuate the audio coming from the amplifier. The bass-level knob features integrated flanges and comes with two screws to mount the unit under the dash. It includes a 16' cable to connect to the amplifier.

Note: The wired remote measures 2.625" (w) x 1.0625 (h) x 2.4375" (d)

Connections

Front-mounted Terminals: The Focal FPS 1500 has all of the cable connections on the front of the amplifier for a clean installation.

Power Input: Two set-screw terminals are provided for connecting the power and ground cables. The terminals can accept up to 2-gauge wire, however, a 4-gauge wiring kit is sufficient for the 60-amp rating of the built-in fuse. The set screws can be tightened/loosened with the supplied Hex wrench.

Remote Turn-on: A set screw terminal for connecting the remote turn-on lead. The terminal will accept up to 10-gauge wire. The set screw can be tightened/loosened with the supplied Hex wrench.

Speaker Outputs: 2 pairs of set-screw terminals are provided for an easy parallel subwoofer connection. The terminals can accept up to 8-gauge wire. The set screws can be tightened/loosened with the supplied Hex wrench.

Pseudo-Balanced Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with one pair of left & right gold-plated RCA jacks for the input signal from the head unit. These pseudo-balanced inputs help to reject ground noise.

Remote Control: An RJ-14 jack for connecting the supplied remote bass control module.

ATO Fuses: The amp is equipped with two 40-amp ATO fuses. Two spare fuses are included with the amplifier.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Q
Can this power two ten inch subs or does it have to be one big sub?

A
There's technically no difference since the amplifier only sees resistance, not numbers of drivers.
david  Apr 12, 2018
A
This could certainly power two subs - if wired correctly. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help make sure you get the gear that will match your system.
