Very accurate sound
2007 Toyota 4Runner
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
First of all the install on a vehicle says a lot about the end result- I installed these in a 2007 4Runner in the front door location. I had picked up a set of the 2-way door speakers in the same line for another vehicle of mine and a set of the tweeters that are in this kit for another. I was highly impressed with both. Both sets were driven off of an Alpine 50x4 amp. When I installed these I noticed the adapter bracket(factory had 6x9" mid-woofer in the front door) wasn't the sturdiest. After installing I found I lost a lot of low-mid which was opposite of what happened in the other vehicle. I pulled them and installed the 6x9 version of the kit and with a little factory speaker bracket mod it was sealed tight. The lower end came right back but everything from about 1250 - 4k hz disappeared. Frustrated I sat down with a dremel, glue gun and soldering iron and joined parts of the factory bracket with the Metra one with some bracing and baffles added to the IS165's and placed them back in the car. After a bit of tuning on the crossover and P.EQ I had the flattest-cleanest sound since my old IASCA days in the 90's and all for the sale price of $160 it was worth all the "trouble". The Aluminum inverted dome tweeter is crystal but a bit too tinny for my tastes - a single piece of silk between the tweeter and the factory grill fixed that. Most probably wouldn't notice. I wouldn't use with with less than 25 Watts and with 75- WOW, they s i n g
Pros: Flat response and crystal clear sound. An amp should be mandatory to really review them. Price was cool as well
Cons: Focal did great in every way- Metra failed miserably with the ill quality adaptor brackets.
