About the Focal Integration ISS 690

John Pollard

Audiophile-grade engineering

Focal applies the same technology they use in their studio and audiophile-grade home systems to their Integration line of car speakers. The Integration ISS 690 component system includes 6"x9" woofers with cones made from Polyglass, a material that combines the warm sound of cellulose with the strength of glass, so they'll play accurately with no added resonances.

Focal ISS 690 6X9" 2 way Component Speakers

You can use this angled tweeter mount to improve high-frequency dispersion in problem vehicles.

Adjustable tweeter

Each separate Integration processed aluminum inverted dome tweeter features a built-in phase plug and wave guide, which act together to increase the power of high-frequency notes and improve the stereo soundstage. Focal includes a low-profile surface mount and an angled mount so you can set up the tweeter for the best possible imaging in your vehicle.

Built-in crossover networks

The crossover networks are built-in, so you don't have those extra boxes to install. Low-profile Integration speakers allow you to put Focal sound quality and construction into your vehicle, so you can enjoy a dramatic jump in performance over your old speakers.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Woofer grilles are not included; the factory grilles should be suitable for most applications.

Woofer

Polyglass Cone: The woofer cone has a cellulose pulp base and is coated with a uniform deposit of hollow glass microballs. The addition of the Polyglass layer significantly increases the cone's rigidity without adding much weight. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy and neutrality of the hard outer surface, but maintains the superior damping characteristics of the cellulose pulp.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1" diameter low-mass Kapton former, ensuring no coil deformation.

Crossovers: The included 7" woofer wires have integrated crossovers. The woofer ends of the wires have female quick-slides that easily connect to the woofer terminals.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeters include two types of surface mount housings, one low profile and one angled:

Flush Mount Low Profile Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.3" 0.894" 1.933"
Mounting Depth 0.55" 0.875" (screw depth) 0.875" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 1.871" 1.88" N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.67" N/A N/A
Width N/A N/A 1.895"
Surface Depth N/A N/A 2.839"

Crossovers: The included 19" tweeter wires have integrated crossovers. The tweeter ends of the wires have quick-slide terminals that easily connect to the wires soldered to the tweeters. The input end of each wire has three leads, a negative and two positives. The positive leads are labeled Car and Display, with a lower output level from the Car lead (useful because the placement of the woofer in a typical car installation requires the tweeter output be lowered to maintain a balanced sound).

03 dodge ram 2500 quadcab with a pioneer avh 4200nex and some original oem blown speakers. I have my heart set on the alpine type r 6.5 for rear doors but I am hoping to fit a good 6x9 with no built in tweeters, not a big fan of those. Like the looks of these a.) focal integration iss 690, and the b.) jl audio c1-690. Anyone get these to fit in the front door speakers? What would I need to buy to make it work? And would I be able to get door panels back on? Any help or advice...

They fit just fine. I used the factory spacer and removed the tabs that held the factory speaker in place. Easy modification. No door mods required.

Hi WarrenT, I was able to fit my 2009 Toyota Highlander with the ISS 690 speakers in the front doors with the Metra 82-8146 speaker brackets. Although the fitting was not perfect, the window would hit the speaker when I lowered it, I was able to fix that by putting extra padding to push the speaker forwards. As for the door panels, I was able to fit them back on as well with no trouble at all. So if you need more space for the window to roll down use Extruded Butyl Rope (EBR) for padding, and if you need the door panel to still fit you can always sand the inside of the panel. (You can purchase EBR from here: sounddeadenershowdown) As for the tweeters I cut out a hole on the top of the panels and fit it in with EBR (planning on 3D printing a cap for the tweeter). Hope this helps.

How did the speakers sound once you installed them on your Cherokee?

Changed everything. The factory speakers were lifeless and lacked midrange and highs. The Focals fixed that and took the sound to a whole new level.

I'm very pleased with them. They do need a few hours of time on them to "break-in", before really sounding good, but overall, I found them to be an excellent upgrade to my Jeep's OE sound system. It's important, however, to use the Focal inline x-overs, for both the tweeters, as well as the mid-woofers. One other thing, while some people like to call the Focal tweeters overly "bright", I prefer to call them "detailed"....

Much improvement over stock speakers! Bass is deeper and the music/ lyrics clearer!

Q
I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee with base 6 spkr system- tweeters in doors. According to reviews these are VERY bright tweeters but can sound better if Focal crossovers are used. I wanted clarity on the manual. Is there an 'inline crossover' that is used both with the tweeter and woofer (comes with 2)? Assuming so my question is that my car doesn't send a full signal to both speakers so I feel like I'd be missing a certain range as the car already sends signal 'crossedover' for tweeter and woofer and the Focal units would re-cross them. Isn't there some frequencies lost between? i.e. if GC cross is at 1000hz - over to tweeter and under to woofer, then I add Focal inline at 900hz the 100hz in the middle is not sent to tweeter and blocked to woofer... (actual #hz is just for example).

The speaker kit does come with x overs. One for each channel. No frequencies are lost. Just directed to the appropriate driver

Unfortunately, the Focal instructions are quite vague, and don't mention any crossover frequencies at all. Secondly, the one thing that REALLY puzzles me, is the "woofers" have power terminals, which, of course, accept the power input from the car's wiring harness. However, there's no real place to connect the tweeter wiring to, as there would be, if the crossover was an active one. So I never did understand how/where Focal expected you, the user/installer, to connect the tweeters' power wires/crossover to. It appears that they assumed that you'd somehow "jumper" or splice the wiring in. Therefore, I assumed, correctly or not, that the vehicle's head unit was already performing the function of a crossover, since the car's wiring harness had separate feeds for the "woofer" and the tweeter. I used the available adapters to connect the Focal woofers to the car's wiring harness, and as much as I don't like to cut OE wiring harnesses, I did cut the tweeter leads, and installed male/female "plugs" on the tweeter wires. On the head units settings, I run the tweeter level "flat", with some gain on the bass level.
