Focal PS 165V

Focal proudly manufactures the PS 165V system in France.

Sweet tweeter

The PS 165V's aluminum tweeter sports Focal's inverted dome structure for wider dispersion and extended high-frequency response, giving you sparkling detail in the high notes. Three different mounting possibilities let you get creative with a custom installation and get hands-on with the stereo imaging in your car.

Flexibility

Each crossover network features 3-level tweeter control, and allows you to select three different crossover points. If space is an issue in your vehicle, Focal gives you the ability to split up the included crossover networks. You can mount a high-pass filter near each tweeter and a low-pass filter near each woofer, instead of having to mount one big crossover on each side of your vehicle. This system will handle up to 80 watts RMS, and you'll want to use an outboard amplifier to get the best possible performance from these speakers.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Woofer

Polyglass Cone: The woofer cone has a cellulose pulp base and is coated with a uniform deposit of hollow glass microballs. The addition of the Polyglass layer significantly increases the cone's rigidity without adding much weight. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy and neutrality of the hard outer surface, but maintains the superior damping characteristics of the cellulose pulp.

Surround: The rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Aluminum Basket: The woofer features a non-magnetic cast aluminum basket.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Focal, call this size speaker a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeters include two types of surface mount housings, one low profile and one angled:

Flush Mount Low Profile Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.282" 0.895" 1.945"
Mounting Depth 0.542" 0.875" (screw depth) 0.3" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 1.920" N/A N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.682" N/A N/A
Width N/A 1.920" 1.920"
Surface Depth N/A 1.920" 2.875"
Crossover

Crossovers: Individual crossovers are included for each woofer and each tweeter. The crossovers can be mounted separately, docked in pairs, or all four crossovers docked together and mounted as one unit. The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals and will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.3" wide. Because the woofer and tweeter crossovers are separate, and have separate inputs, the system can be bi-amped. The woofer crossover point is 3.5 kHz, all the crossover slopes are 6 dB/octave, and the tweeter crossovers offer two adjustments:

  • Tweeter Attenuation: set the tweeter output to -6dB, -3dB, or 0dB (no attenuation)
  • Tweeter Crossover Point: the tweeter crossovers also offer three crossover point options; 4 kHz, 4.5 kHz, and 5 kHz

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Length: 4"
  • Height: 1-1/4"
  • Width:
    • Individual: 2"
    • Pair: 4"
    • All four: 8"

Q
I have a 4 channel amp with 85watts at 4ohms per channel. Im wondering if the "80watts rms" for the speakers mean between one woofer and one tweeter equals 80? If so does anyone know the rms wattage of the tweeter by itself? I really would like to have every speaker on its own channel instead of putting the two left speakers together on a channel.
michael  Dec 03, 2016
2 answers
A
If you drive the woofer separately from the tweeter, the amp will likely see only 2ohms for each speaker. In this case, your amp's ratings will be much higher, and you stand a good change of blowing out your speakers. I'm driving these speakers with a much smaller amp (40 watts for each woofer/tweeter pair) and they sound great. These speakers are really meant to be driven as a pair. If you really want more power for each pair, I would look to see if you can bridge two amp channels together, and then use the bridged pair to drive a woofer/tweeter pair. You would still need to be careful not to overdrive the speakers.
stephen  Dec 05, 2016
A
Since it's a component the 80wt amp will be perfect for it.

Q
Focal says these are 6.5in speakers your site says 6.75in. Who is correct?
bill  Jul 16, 2016
1 answer
A
Thanks for your question. Really both classifications are somewhat correct. 6 3/4 speakers are considered an oversized 6 1/2 based on how it fits most vehicles. Check out the link below, it's a really good article that goes into more depth. Hope that helps. http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/blogs/av_tips/archive/2008/11/14/6-1-2-quot-versus-6-3-4-quot-car-speakers.aspx?g=52100

Q
These speakers are rated 80 watts rms. Does that mean each woofer and tweet can handle 80? Or does the combined component handle 80?

A
Combined ????
ronald  Jun 28, 2016
A
The rms is for the woofer I found this out by recently blowing both tweeters they handled it for about 4 months of hard use but ended up giving I ran them on a 100 watt amp as well so they are probably around 100w max
reed  Jun 28, 2016
A
Each speaker combo, being one woofer and one tweeter is 80 watts rms

What series is better for SQ PS 165V OR 165AS?

I have the 165v in front & the 165ac in the rear of F150 super crew. Both sound great. I bought the 165v for the higher performance, but am amazed how good the 165ac sounds. And the 165as is the components in line with the 165ac & sounds a little above that. So either set would be a great choice. & 165v are at a great deal right now.

Q
What is the best way to connect these speakers to larger wire such as 12 gauge? The box did not include connectors and the speaker terminals are very small
japheth  Jan 09, 2016

A
The positive is standard size, but the negative is small. I used standard 12g female wire connectors. If you keep it centered on the negative, it will still fit just a little snug & solder it & heat shrink it, & you'll be fine. I used stinger 12g through out my truck. & don't listen to the others who say it's too big. 12g is great wire.
terry  Jan 26, 2016
A
I don't think the human ear could hear the difference in sound between using 16 gauge which fits perfect and 12 gauge. But if you absolutely want to use 12 gauge, you could purchase pin connectors that would fit.
michael  Jan 10, 2016
A
Honestly 12 gauge is a little to big for these speakers. Soldering would be the only method of connecting to the speakers with that size gauge. I suggest going with 16 gauge which should be plenty for the speakers.

Q
What crossover setting are owners using for the set? Understandably it's subjective to our ears but I could use a general rundown on higher versus lower xover points. Thanks in advance!

Think placement makes a difference as well. I have the rear set in my wrangler set both on the low setting as they are right at my ears and the fronts both on the middle setting. Both switches.
matthew  Dec 07, 2015
A
I used the middle setting on both crossovers and I'm very happy with the sound.
luis  Dec 02, 2015

I cannot answer this question, as I've not been yet able to install the speakers. They LOOK like they will sound good, however.

what diameter are the tweeters when flush mounted (that is, the tweeter itself minus any case for surface mounting)?

the tweeters got the outer shell but that can be remove and mounts pretty flat installed in my Tahoe and sound great.
mark  Nov 12, 2015

Hey Doug the diameter of the tweeter without the case for surface mounting is 1.7 inches exactly.
alexander  Nov 10, 2015

I used a 1-11/16 inch hole saw, and they are a nice fit. They pressed in by hand, and have yet to fall out.
adam  Nov 10, 2015
A
I had a shop install them into the factory setup, took a while with a dremel they said but I didn't observe.
ronald  Nov 10, 2015
Q
Can the tweeters be flush mounted or will I have to use the "pods" they are mounted in?
michael  Jun 30, 2015
3 answers
A
You can choose to either flush or surface mount them.
michael  Jul 01, 2015
A
Tweeters can be mounted with or without the pod. I removed them from the pod and mounted where the stock tweeters were, with a little modification to the stock housing.
david von  Jun 30, 2015
A
Yes, they can be flush mounted. They come separated from the pod and include a retaiining ring that can be used to flush mount.
