About the Focal Performance PS 165V1

Alexander H.

You're worth it

A sound upgrade is a reinvigorating investment in your car, and you'll find few brands more reliable than Focal. Their PS 165V1 6-1/2" component system uses many of Focal's famous technologies working in harmony to deliver the sonic goods. The light but exceptionally rigid Polyglass woofer cone produces richly-textured bass and midrange frequencies, and the woofer's non-resonant aluminum chassis virtually eliminates coloration. A sturdy butyl surround ensures long-lasting performance, while the woofer's phase plug enhances dispersion for excellent sound staging.

Focal PS 165V1 6-3/4" Component Speakers

The aluminum basket offers a rock-solid platform, eliminating resonances that can color your bass.

Versatile highs

The PS 165V1's aluminum tweeter sports Focal's inverted dome structure for wider dispersion and extended high-frequency response, giving you sparkling detail in the high notes without any of the blare often found in metal tweeters. Three different mounting possibilities let you get creative with a custom installation and get hands-on with the stereo imaging in your car.

A thoughtful installation

Each crossover network features 3-level tweeter control, and allows you to select three different crossover points. If space is an issue in your vehicle, Focal gives you the ability to split up the included crossover networks. You can mount a high-pass filter near each tweeter and a low-pass filter near each woofer, instead of having to mount one big crossover on each side of your vehicle. This system will handle up to 80 watts RMS, and you'll want to use an outboard amplifier to get the best possible performance from these speakers.

Woofer

Polyglass Cone: The woofer cone has a cellulose pulp base and is coated with a uniform deposit of hollow glass microballs. The addition of the Polyglass layer significantly increases the cone's rigidity without adding much weight. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy and neutrality of the hard outer surface, but maintains the superior damping characteristics of the cellulose pulp.

Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the woofer ensures a smooth, flat off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone.

Aluminum Basket: The woofer features a non-magnetic cast aluminum basket.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Focal, call this size speaker a 6-1/2". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6-1/2" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size woofer as a 6-3/4". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Tweeter

Inverted Dome Tweeter: The tweeter is an inverted aluminum dome, producing a broad sound stage. The tweeter has a Neodymium magnet to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Mounting Options: The tweeters include two types of surface mount housings, one low profile and one angled:

Flush Mount Low Profile Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.3" 0.903" 1.955"
Mounting Depth 0.5" 0.875" (screw depth) 0.3" (screw depth)
Frame Diameter 1.905" 1.905" N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.672" N/A N/A
Width N/A 1.905" 1.905"
Surface Depth N/A 1.905" 2.888"
Crossover

Crossovers: Individual crossovers are included for each woofer and each tweeter. The crossovers can be mounted separately, docked in pairs, or all four crossovers docked together and mounted as one unit. The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals and will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.3" wide. Because the woofer and tweeter crossovers are separate, and have separate inputs, the system can be bi-amped. The woofer crossover point is 3.5 kHz, all the crossover slopes are 6 dB/octave, and the tweeter crossovers offer two adjustments:

  • Tweeter Attenuation: set the tweeter output to -6dB, -3dB, or 0dB (no attenuation)
  • Tweeter Crossover Point: the tweeter crossovers also offer three crossover point options; 4 kHz, 4.5 kHz, and 5 kHz

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Length: 4"
  • Height: 1-1/4"
  • Width:
    • Individual: 2"
    • Pair: 4"
    • All four: 8"

Q
I currently own these speakers and tweeters in both the front and rear. I also have a Focal I SUB Active and wanted to know what subsonic (20 to 50 hz) and low pass filter (50 to 180 hz) setting should be set at?
penguin  Apr 16, 2024
1 answer
A
I would be happy to help, A.H. Subwoofer sound settings are personal and subjective, but we can provide a good starting point for your tuning. The ISUB's frequency response is listed as 45Hz - 150Hz. Adjustments would be made on your connected aftermarket radio's subwoofer outputs. I would set your subsonic filter at 45hz and below and try your low pass filter around the 80-100hz mark. This will provide excellent sound quality and if you prefer you can adjust the crossover frequency higher or lower depending on your personal preference and music tastes.

bobby  May 06, 2023
1 answer
A
You get a pair of tweeters Bobby, even though there is only one pictured. No worries here! If you ever have any doubts, always check our "what's in the box" section of the item webpage to see exactly what is included with your gear!

Q
Are there any disadvantages for running 2 channels of amplification rather than bi-amping (4 channels)?
mike  Mar 04, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Mike, and thank you for your question. That depends on amplification, and what the amplifier that is being used has to offer. You are going to get more power to the speakers with the same 4 channel amp running a channel to each driver, and letting the amplifier be the crossover. Disadvantage is you cannot let the tweeters get frequencies they cant play by not using the supplied crossovers, or need to know what the tweeter crossover points are, and be dead on with your amp set up.

Q
In the manual it shows two setups for wiring the crossovers...what is the difference if the are wired together or separate?
fabio  Nov 15, 2021
1 answer
A
The woofer and tweeter crossovers are separate, and have separate inputs. They can be mounted separately, docked in pairs, or all four crossovers docked together and mounted as one unit. This gives you the option for bi-amping.

Q
Can I run these on a audiocontrol lc4.800?
ty  Jul 22, 2021
1 answer
A
We do not recommend connecting these speakers to that amp. It outputs a lot more power than the speakers should get and recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your goals and get a personal recommendation on a matched setup

Q
Can someone recommend a capacitor size to use to protect tweeters in an active setup?
glen  Jun 10, 2019
1 answer
A
Typically we would recommend a 5000hz capacitor to protect a tweeter from low frequencies. Depending on your speaker and amp this might be a good starting point https://bit.ly/2KmVM5n You can also connect with one of our friendly product advisors for personalized advice here: https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB

Q
Do these require 4 channels on an amp? Why are there 4 crossovers included?
konstantinos  Feb 19, 2019
1 answer
A
Individual crossovers are included for each woofer and each tweeter. The crossovers can be mounted separately, docked in pairs, or all four crossovers docked together and mounted as one unit. You can power them with just 2 channels of amplification but they also support bi-amping (4 channels). You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the speaker's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table.

Why the serial number didnt appear on the 3rd picture?
mohd  Feb 15, 2019
1 answer
A
The serial number is on the woofer at the edge near the chassis , part number first followed buy the serial number, great speakers but I trade up to the flax series, and there simply the best ! I wouldn't hesitate to buy either set
lawrence  Feb 16, 2019
Q
Is the RMS for 80 or 40 watts per speaker?
lawrence  Jul 01, 2018
1 answer
A
80 watts per channel. So, each midrange/tweeter will handle up to 80 watts combined.
