Wanted: serious listeners

Focal Spirit Classic headphones

The Focal Spirit Classic headphones combine exceptional sound quality with cool styling and a comfortable fit.

We know you're out there — headphone lovers for whom music is more than just the soundtrack to a workout or workday. If you love to do nothing but listen when you're wearing headphones, you'll want to check out the Focal Spirit Classic. Their closed-back, over-the-ear design creates a cocoon for you to escape from the real world and experience your music in a deeper way than your smartphone's earbuds ever could.

Detailed, accurate sound

Once you're nestled into the Spirit Classic's cozy confines, these headphones deliver gorgeous detail with flat frequency response – no overbearing bass or harsh high frequencies. Tight bass, lush mids, and clear highs comprise a smooth blend that won't grow fatiguing as you listen. The Mylar®-and-titanium transducers are thin and stiff, making them particularly responsive to dynamic changes in music. That means these headphones deliver not only a more lifelike performance, but a more accurate one as well.

Separate cables for smartphones and stereos

These are headphones worthy of plugging into your receiver, integrated amp, or dedicated headphone amp, so Focal includes a 13-foot cable along with a 1/4” plug adapter. But not to ignore smartphones and the wealth of online music they can tap, the Spirit Classic also come with a shorter remote cable for music and call control.

Easy on the eyes and the ears

As good as the Focal Spirit Classic headphones sound, they're just as nice to look at. The chocolate-colored metallic finish on the earcups and the matching headband look both understated and stylish. The memory foam ear cushions provide an exceptional level of comfort, so you can keep listening.

These headphones have excellent sound quality, build quality, and comfort. They're not worn in completely yet, so the bass isn't very strong but they still sound great. What I like the most is the strong midrange. I'm a midhead and these have very strong mids with outstanding vocals.

Pros: Excellent build quality, comfort, detachable cables, and strong vocals.

Cons: Some people will not be happy with the bass output.

I have been researching headphones for over a year. I wanted closed phones so those around me did not have to listen along with me. I tried B&W P 7, Sennheiser momentum and HD600 (open so excluded although Really nice!), PSB, Grado and while they all sounded good, none grabbed me. Bought the NAD viso from Crutchfield which sounded really good but we're just not comfortable on my head. Crutchfield took them back no questions asked and send me the Focal Classics next day- before I even had gotten a chance to ship off the NADs! The Focal Classics are spectacular! They are comfortable, extremely crisp and clean, with far better definition and range than the NADs. The bass is well defined and goes deep without a hint of boominess. The highs are very crisp and accurate and at all fatiguing. They really shine in the mids with superb definition. They sound great with all musical genres. They are not for gang banging bass heads, and I am definitely not that guy. They are highly regarded by professional reviewers and I am shocked they are not more well known, but I believe they will be in time. They are slightly tight on my ears which is why I gave a 4 for comfort but other reviewers have said they get more comfortable with use. Hands down the best cans I have heard at this price point. Crutchfield gets a "10" for their outstanding service .

Pros: Exceptional sound quality, build quality, comfortable, worth every penny. Highly recommended

Cons: None

These are a well kept secret in the headphone world and shouldn't be! I did a ton of research and first decided to try the NAD Viso HP50's but felt something was missing. The NAD's were amazing also but lacked something to my ears. In my research I found that reviewers felt the Focal Spirit Classic's bass was more dynamic and that the midrange was a touch warmer. I have to agree 100% and to me, the Focal's are worth the additional cost for the music that I enjoy most. It is awesome how the midrange can be both a touch warm and extremely clear. The other deciding factor for me was that I can listen to these for longer periods and they are not fatiguing to my ears. The accessories are a nice touch as well. Try them and you will not be disappointed!!

Pros: Sound quality, accessories, premium look & feel

Cons: Price, not extremely portable (again, made for home use)

Overview: The Focal Spirit Professional over-ear headphones are designed for sound engineers, musicians, broadcast professionals, and audiophiles, but can also be used on-the-go. Two interchangeable cables are included: a 4-meter coiled cable, and a 1.5-meter straight cable. The headphones feature a textured black finish that is shock- and scratch-resistant to give you years of use in the professional working environment. The headphones come with a soft drawstring pouch for storage.

Drivers: The Spirit Professional features two matched 40mm transducers that feature mylar/titanium composite membranes and strong neodymium magnets. These drivers reproduce precise details without coloring the sound, so you hear only the music as it was intended.

Earcups: The memory foam ear cups are made for ultimate comfort for hours of listening. The earcups surround the ears to provide excellent insulation from outside noise and distortion. The closed-back design of the headphones make them the optimum choice for those who depend upon accuracy and comfort.

Cables: Two cables are included with the Spirit Professional headphones. A 4-meter coiled cable is provided for studio and home use. In addition, there is a 1.5-meter straight cable with an in-line remote/microphone that is compatible with many smart devices. The one-button remote can control the playback (play/pause/next track/previous track) of digital music files, and mobile phone calls (answer/hang up). Both cables are made with OFC (oxygen-free copper) with low impedance for best signal transfer. A gold-plated screw-on 3.5mm-to-1/4" plug adapter is included, and can be used with either cable.

Plug Polarity: The headphone plug has a "TRS" configuration: Tip=left channel (hot), Ring=right channel (cold), Sleeve=ground (shield).
