Our take on the Focal Spirit Professional

by David Brown

Studio sound for musicians and music lovers

Focal Spirit Professional headphones

The Focal Spirit Professional headphones offer accurate, detailed sound fit for the recording studio and home listening.

Working musicians know the importance of detailed, accurate sound. They rely on quality headphones to reveal the subtle details in their performance, so they can fine-tune every aspect of a song. That's why headphones like the Spirit Professional are so coveted in the studio. They deliver your music with a flat frequency response, so you can hear it the way it truly sounds. And the closed-back, around-the-ear design offers excellent noise isolation – perfect for a drummer trying to lock onto the click track or a music lover trying to block out sound from a TV in the next room.

Accurate sound across the frequency spectrum

Musicians and producers usually don't want headphones that amp up the bass or overcook the high frequencies. So Focal designed the Spirit Professional's drivers to deliver tight bass, lush mids, and clear highs with accuracy and fine detail. The Mylar®-and-titanium transducers employ a thin, stiff design that makes them particularly responsive to dynamic changes. That translates to more realism, for a more lifelike sound that studio pros and serious music lovers alike can appreciate.

Easy on your ears

The recording and mixing process is a long one. That means musicians need headphones built as much for comfort as they are for sound. The Spirit Professionals earn high marks with soft memory-foam ear cushions providing relief throughout a long day in the studio or extended listening at home. The scratch-resistant finish will keep them looking sharp. Fold them up and stow them in the supplied carrying bag for a little extra protection.

Two cables: the long and short of it

The Spirit Professional headphones come with two detachable cables. There's a 13-foot coiled cable along with a 1/4” adapter designed for use in the studio or with your home stereo. A shorter miniplug cable is made for use with portable devices. The in-line remote lets you control playback as well as take calls with your smartphone using the built-in microphone.

Overview: The Focal Spirit Professional over-ear headphones are designed for sound engineers, musicians, broadcast professionals, and audiophiles, but can also be used on-the-go. Two interchangeable cables are included: a 4-meter coiled cable, and a 1.5-meter straight cable. The headphones feature a textured black finish that is shock- and scratch-resistant to give you years of use in the professional working environment. The headphones come with a soft drawstring pouch for storage.

Drivers: The Spirit Professional features two matched 40mm transducers that feature mylar/titanium composite membranes and strong neodymium magnets. These drivers reproduce precise details without coloring the sound, so you hear only the music as it was intended.

Earcups: The memory foam ear cups are made for ultimate comfort for hours of listening. The earcups surround the ears to provide excellent insulation from outside noise and distortion. The closed-back design of the headphones make them the optimum choice for those who depend upon accuracy and comfort.

Cables: Two cables are included with the Spirit Professional headphones. A 4-meter coiled cable is provided for studio and home use. In addition, there is a 1.5-meter straight cable with an in-line remote/microphone that is compatible with many smart devices. The one-button remote can control the playback (play/pause/next track/previous track) of digital music files, and mobile phone calls (answer/hang up). Both cables are made with OFC (oxygen-free copper) with low impedance for best signal transfer. A gold-plated screw-on 3.5mm-to-1/4" plug adapter is included, and can be used with either cable.

Plug Polarity: The headphone plug has a "TRS" configuration: Tip=left channel (hot), Ring=right channel (cold), Sleeve=ground (shield).

Great Mixing Headphones!

Written By Anonymous, Volente, Texas on Tuesday, April 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I was mixing and mastering an album, and using pretty good speakers and similar headphones, but because my room acoustics are still not treated, my mixed would pretty consistently fall apart when listening on other speakers.

I bought the Focals in hopes it would save the day/album, and I couldn't believe it when it actually did! So to me, especially when you need to take the room out of your mix, the Focals clarity and extremely accurate interpretation of what your computer 'hears', and its ability to help one then create a mix that translates well on all speakers and headphones is amazing! Now I'm looking to buy (in the future) some better mixing monitors from Focal!
Clear, and most importantly your mixes end up translating almost perfectly across all other speakers and headphones. If you are SERIOUS about mixing, get these headphones!
If you need them to be up to par right away, you may not be ok with needing to break them in with 50-100 hours of use. I played music through them from an iPod for a day and that seemed to get things right. My mixes turned out great!

Impressively accurate, detailed headphones

Written By JamesG, Charlottesville, VA on Tuesday, March 11, 2014
Probably the most neutral headphones I've ever heard, in terms of frequency response. Music just sounds like music on them. I'm a studio engineer and in comparing these to my $4k monitor speakers, the overall sound is nearly the same. The soundstage is very good - not as good as the best open-backed cans, which is to be expected, but I don't hear any of the boxiness or nasal quality that you often expect with closed-back cans. Bass is really excellent - goes low, has a lot of impact, but isn't headache-inducing.
Sound quality, and sound isolation.
Not the most comfortable, especially if you have big ears. They tend to sit on the ears rather than go all the way around them. But the memory foam is loosening up over time and they've definitely become more comfortable to the point where it isn't too much of an issue.
