About the Focal Performance Sub P 20F

Bob Bihlmayer

The flax connection

If you've heard Focal speakers, then you know that their reputation for quality is well-deserved. Focal's designers never hesitate to think outside the box when it comes to speaker innovation. To create their Performance Series speakers and subs, for example, they spent five years developing a super-lightweight, extra-rigid cone material made from a layer of flax fibers sandwiched between two layers of glass fibers. You get the warmth of natural fiber combined with the supreme accuracy of a more rigid cone material.

You won't believe it's an 8" sub.

An 8" sub that thinks it's a giant

Focal's Performance Sub P 20F 8" sub delivers performance way beyond its size, using its 1-1/2" voice coil and double magnets to handle up to 250 watts RMS. It works equally well in compact sealed or ported enclosures, so it's a great candidate for great bass in a smaller vehicle. If you're putting together a system, make sure to take a look at the Focal component speaker systems that feature the same "Flax Sandwich" cones.

Features

Cone: The woofer cone is a sandwich design, with a 0.6mm flax center between two 0.2mm glass layers. This combination of materials results in a neutral sound without coloration.

Surround: The rubber surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Spring-Posts: The spring-post speaker terminals offer easy connection of single banana plugs or bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Rubber Gasket: The gasket/mounting-ring ensures better chassis damping and prevents air leakage. The rubber gasket is removable.

Sealed Box Volume: Focal recommends a sealed enclosure with a volume between 10 liters (0.35 ft³) and 15 liters (0.53 ft³).

Ported Box Volume: Focal recommends a ported enclosure with a volume between 10 liters (0.35 ft³) and 20 liters (0.71 ft³) using a single port tube (size in the table below):

Vented Enclosure Specifications (using 3/4" MDF construction)

Internal Volume 0.35 ft³ 0.53 ft³ 0.71 ft³

Customer Q&A

Q
I replaced all the other speakers in my 2020 F-150 Lariat with the B&O sound system. The speakers I chose for the doors are the Focal PC & PS 165 F, and the difference is amazing. I would like to add an 8inch Focal sub, but the factory sub has connections on both the left and right sides. Could I connect this to just one of those sides?

A
We do not recommend this. It appears the stock amp may have different amp channels for each set of wires because the wiring harness which plugs into the amp has different locations for each of the two voice coils (one set of wires for each voice coil) on the stock subwoofer. In short, we recommend getting a DVC 4 ohm subwoofer when connecting the new subwoofer to the stock amp. This way, you will get all the power the stock amp outputs for the subwoofer.

Q
can these be used for free air woofers in the back deck?

A
There are sizes for both sealed and vented woofer boxes. I cannot be sure, but if your trunk is sealed and/or insulated it may work. The woofers sound excellent in a sealed woofer box.

Q
Are the recommended enclosure volumes taking into account the speaker volume?
jorge  May 18, 2016

A
Yes, absolutely. There's a range for each type as well: sealed box volume: 0.35-0.53 cubic feet ported box volume: 0.35-0.71 cubic feet So, as long as the airspace falls within the recommended range for the specific enclosure type, you'll be good to go. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
