Eclipse

Our take on the Eclipse AVN726E

Stunning graphics, superior performance

Powerful menu Eclipse pulls out all the stops with the AVN726E navigation receiver, giving you detailed maps, top-of-the-line image quality, and high-end sound in an elegant package. Its wide range of navigation and entertainment options make it perfect for building a multimedia A/V system in your vehicle. Plus, built-in Bluetooth® lets you make hands-free calls for safer driving.

The big 7" monitor gives you the ability to enter commands with just a touch of the screen and makes it easy to view movies, navigation screens, and menus. Eclipse uses advanced digital image processing technology to give you vivid, detailed images.

Awesome navigation capabilities

AVN726E receiver's navigation screens

The AVN726E features flash-based navigation that gives you instant response to touchscreen commands like zooming and scrolling, and you can use the handy SD™ card slot to keep your maps up-to-date. In major cities, the navigator guides you with detailed views of streets, buildings, and recognizable landmarks. With access to over 16 million points of interest, you'll always find interesting spots for dining and recreation, even in unfamiliar territory.

You can also add a SIRIUS Traffic receiver for real-time traffic data that keeps you up to date on accidents, traffic flow and congestion, and road closings in most major metropolitan areas.

Movies and music

Play movies up front while you're parked, or connect a screen in the back so your passengers can watch while you're on the road. Eclipse maintains a digital data transfer between your source and the screen, so no analog noise and image smear are present — giving you outstanding color depth and improved contrast for a crisp, detailed image.

Play your iPod® by connecting it to the AVN726E's rear USB slot — no adapter necessary, but adding Eclipse's optional cable lets you view your videos and leave your other cable at home. Another plus — the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its own DAC to deliver much better sound quality. You can also load up a disc or a thumb drive with MP3 and WMA files to take care of the tunes on your next road trip.

Rear view with camera connected

Adding on

Add Eclipse's optional satellite radio or HD Radio® tuner for the best radio entertainment around. Three sets of 5-volt preamp outputs send a clean signal to the external amplifiers you use to drive your speakers and subs. Connect an Eclipse rear-view camera to get a clear view when you back up.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Hands-on Research for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Great Navi -Terrible iPod Interface

Written By Andy, West Lafayette, Indiana on Sunday, January 31, 2010

I bought this after reading many reviews, most of which made it sound as if the iPod interface was good. Wow, are they wrong. For any serious iPod enthusiast, you will not want this unit. Even with the optional iPod cable, this unit requires you to scroll through your lists of albums, artists or songs paging 5 at a time. Have 6,000 songs on your iPod like I do and want to get to Tom Sawyer? Start at the A's and page down a couple hundred times to get to the T's. True you can use playlists or scroll through by artists, but you're still pushing the scroll down button 5 at a time to scroll through your list. Think you can hold the scroll button down to scroll quickly? WRONG, you must press the scroll down button each time for a new list of 5. It's painful! No album art either. Your iPod interface is locked up when plugged in to the Eclipse, forcing you to use the Eclipse interface to choose songs. It's a shame for a unit in this price range. I'm glad that I purchased at the $800 price point instead of several hundred higher as others have.

Crutchfield is awesome though, perfect instructions and installation accessories, and it's good to know I can return it for a full refund if I want to. Awesome navigation, good bluetooth. I can't imagine anyone actually hooking up the parking brake wire as shown in the manual. It's required to use the cell phone address book or on screen keypad for dialing. Luckily I found a work around online.

Good Deal

Written By Hyon, Dayton, OH on Monday, December 21, 2009

Good product. Haven't locked up or crashed yet. Since it was flash based map, the route calculation was amazingly quick (I'm used to a DVD based system). We had iPod Nano plugged in via USB cable, we left it connected during 3 day trip and it never had a problem (the manual suggest not leaving it plugged in during startup). The manual isn't very helpful without an index. Most of the functions of the gps-nav can be found just by touching certain parts of the screen. There are several voices to choose from. There is even an option to alert you when you are speeding. The 3D buildings in a major city is a nice touch.

Few things that weren't clear during purchase.
Extra wires: this system requires that you wire-tap the reverse light and parking brake.
Security: as a passive security, you can encode a CD to be used to unlock the unit after a power failure.

Eclipse AVN726E reviews

Written By Victor, Colorado Springs, CO on Thursday, December 17, 2009

I just received my AVN726E a few days ago and got it installed on a 2008 Smart Car. I will say that this system has one of the best picture quality I have seen so far. (compared to kenwood dnx1540) The system is very user friendly and easy to navigate around. This unit work very well with my iphone 3g. Unlike other unit such as the kenwood, you can plug your iphone usb wire directly into the usb cord and control your music without buying additional cable unless you want to watch video. I'm giving this unit 4 stars because of the navigation system. It tends to lose signal every time you power up your car. (Takes like 10 sec to find the signal) Also, I find the navigation menu is very annoying since you can't just go back to the map by hitting the 'Nav' button. It always goes back to the last menu option you were in and you have to basically continually hit the back arrow or 'back' to see the map. Otherwise, the sound and picture quality is excelllent. This unit is super fast compared to the kenwood. It comes on instantly once the key is in the ignition.

Better then expected.

Written By Robert, Boston, MA on Monday, December 14, 2009

I bought this unit for my 2010 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. I wanted the GPS system along with iPod capabilities and bluetooth hands free. A big surprise was the bluetooth audio streaming directly from my iPhone...very handy. One thing I wanted to say is that any questions I had for the folks at Eclipse were answered by their tech support in a timely and professional manner. I wanted to change my startup screen... I emailed the logo and they sent me a CD back with correct format. I love this system and the support is Rock star!

AVN726E

Written By Ernie, Colorado on Monday, December 07, 2009

12/7/2009 - I have recently installed the AVN726E in my car. I am pleased with the unit with one exception. Eclipse claims the unit supports "hands free operations" for using Bluetooth cell phone capabilities, however, it does not support voice commands. This means you must take your eyes off the road to type in a telephone number or if you are able to download your phone book from your cell phone you must once again take your eyes off the road to find the person/number in the phone book and select that individual then make your call. Prior to purchasing this unit I had a simple $69 hands free unit on my sun visor which allowed me to simply press the call button on my phone then give a voice command to call a person listed in my phone book and talk without taking my eyes off the road. I think Eclipse missed the mark on their "hands free operation" claims for such a simple technology and for the expense of the unit.

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE SOUND CONTROLS?

Written By juan, GRETNA , LA on Friday, November 27, 2009

This is my fourth eclipse unit , one thing i love about eclipse is the sound controls , EQ, time alignment and bass boost , but in this unit they took all those controls out. the bluetooth is a joke , it needs lots of work . the nav is decent but there is no vss wire , which means if you are driving in a tunnel or downtown the GPS stops working. other than that the sound quality is excellent . everyone only mention how wonderful the unit is and it is, but it also needs lots of fixes from eclipse. such as the clock not working until you switch to navagation.

Highly recommend this product

Written By , Chicago, IL on Saturday, November 14, 2009

To start off, cliffs notes version: excellent product and would recommend to anyone looking for a higher end navigation unit.

The GPS is excellent. Very quick start up and I found it very easy to use. POI is loaded with all kinds of locations which continue to impress. Navigation is clear to understand and volume is just right. 3D graphics in a big city like Chicago clear up any confusion with regards to what bridges, overpasses and buildings may be approaching. Not sure this feature would be very useful to someone living in a rural area though. Sound quality through my stock Bose speakers was seriously enhanced. The sound is more crisp and refined. EQ offers plenty of adjustments. Bluetooth was easy to set-up and operate. Graphics of movies and DVDs is HD like and there are no issues with reception of radio stations. I've been looking for negatives, but there really aren't any.

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and would recommend this for anyone that loves a lot of features and options for setting up the unit exactly as they want.

the best there is

Written By Michael, New York, NY on Tuesday, November 10, 2009

This unit really is the best one I've come across. Did hours of research before buying from my dealer. Just had it installed in my 2009 Nissan Altima. Too many positives to list. The only negatives I've come across is that if you hook up the steering wheel controls, the tuner up and down buttons, do not skip to the next radio preset, but just seek up or down instead. Other than that, no complaints.

Also, the manual does not mention that for you to configure certain items or chnage settings on the unit, the parking brake must be engaged. This is a safety feature to make sure you are not doing it while driving. It took at least an hour of searching the online manuals and going through all the menu options while trying to pair my cell to the unit. It finally took a call to tech support for them to tell me the emergenct brake had to be engaged. Not the most intuitive thing.

Nice...But Not Refined

Written By Chad, Seattle, WA on Friday, November 06, 2009

1st, the good: The display is extremely high quality. Nav is accurate, quick, has 3D imagery in city areas & displays addresses as you drive by them on rural roads. The touch screen is responsive & easy to use. The sound quality is above average, although not as customizable as some audiophiles would like. Installation is cake, & you can control audio through your iPod without an additional harness via the USB port. Ability to stream BT audio from a phone or other device works well, but the eclipse unit wont display any of the artist, song, or other info.

Now the not so good: No customization available. You can't add backgrounds or modify the operating characteristics as much as comparable stereos.

The BT sounds fine, but isn't complete. No SMS capability. The address book wont support multiple phone #s per contact. As soon as you select the BT function it kills all stereo sound, which really isn't necessary until you have dialed a phone number. The nav will display phone #s for POIs but the "call" button on the display never becomes active. The nav announces over the radio that it has loss GPS connectivity. It does this every single time you select the nav for the first time after turning the car on.

Expandability: There is no 3.5mm input to connect non-iPod Mp3 players. If you connect the iPod via the additional cable that allows you to watch iPod video it uses both the USB & the RCA/Video inputs so you can't add any additional audio devices.
