Boss BV9980NV Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Cool features for the price. But the touch screen is cheap and sluggish, and the sound quality is absolutely terrible. I will be returning this thing.
Cons: Awful sound. Cheap touchscreen.
2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
The unit is a great value for the money, easy install and initial setup.
Pros: Great reception and power for a stand alone receiver. Display is awesome.
Cons: small volume control knob makes adjusting the volume on rough roads a chore, needs instruction on my application to make dvd work, states cannot play DVD's while driving even when stopped. The Navigation application works but is not useful in rural areas.
1998 Ford Ranger
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
it only merits 1 star because of it's many features but it had at least 3 issues that were not acceptible; unit would play a CD for an hour and then just quit, reinserting disc gave you another minute of playtime with screen retracted and less than 2 minutes with it extended (overheat ?), grinding was heard on cold mornings and LED display was barely visible during the day. i am not a 2nd chance person so it went back and i did not opt for a replacement. while this unit did fit my '98 ford ranger the 7" screen bumped hard against the dash vents when extracted
Pros: good price and good idea
Cons: only had it one week and there were 4 unacceptible issues
sending it back
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Could not set clock to time I wanted.unit would not let me get to general settings or comm settings this unit is also not I pod compatible would only read wman files on my I pod it seems I have a bad radio from the start I have too many issues from the start was on the phone with Crutchfield tech several times they were very patient and very helpful one call was almost 45 minutes and the problem got solved but the issues kept coming have been a Crutchfield customer for over 18 years and have never had this many problems gonna send it back and get another hopefully with no problems
Pros: Good sound .audio control was easy Bluetooth was loud and clear and adjustable it fit flawlessly in my 2004 dakota with the supplied install kit.nice big screen the retractable screen works flawlessly nice option of operation with screen in or out retracts when key off also adjustable tilt on the screen itself liked it but might have got a factory lemon
Cons: Had issues with the unit from the start. Wouldn't turn off with key in off position. Tech however from Crutchfield helped. Could not get to general settings to change anything. Also could not get to comm settings.when you go to time zone you set it and the clock would not change from daylight savings to the time you wanted.if you have a newer generation I pod it does not work.I have some wma files on my I pod and that's all it recognized also radio has a static problem.

Excellent value and the harness worked great.
Pros: Great value.
Cons: None so far.
Does not fit '08 Patriot!
After going through the hassle of getting every set up to install turns out this unit is 3/4" to big to in my vehicle. Whoever has the responsibility to ensure these things are right here needs to fix it.
Cons:Crutchfield response on March 2, 2015 According to our database, this stereo should fit fine in a 2008 Patriot. Please get in touch with us.we'd like to get more information so that we can investigate further. Got it for christmas 2014 install it myself right after. Installation was easy and it makes my speakers sound even better.
Pros: Its has all that I need.
Chevy 2000 Astro Van with door tweeters
The unit while it claim it doesn't fit in my car "Chevy 2000 Astro Van with door tweeters" its does. The unit didn't take the installers anytime to install with a backup camera. It fits nice and clean, the installer did get lazy and of course took the shortest route to mounting the rear usb by lapping it under the doghouse cover. Again, it was expensive so I'm ok with it. I might show a video of it inside the Van with some Pro's and Con's.
Pros: Easy to install, 2 years warranty if installed by pro's. GPS ok but not great, sound ok but not great, functionality ok but not great. Unit will come on when in reverse to backup even if lid is close, it will soft-mute sound for backup camera.
Cons: The Nav system is weakest part of the unit., Its by Ndrive.com maps from TOMTOM. You have to take the sdcard out and use it on your home computer to update it. Trying to location a point by address or Name "Wal-Mart". is difficult But POI knew Walmart had a ATM in the area just couldn't get to it. Also, its window CE, wasn't that discontinued in 2005. which explains why it only reads AVI from sdcard, 2 usb front and back only 1 usable at a time. the front usb short out often (bad).
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I received the deck very quickly. I rewired my entire 04 Chevy 2500hd so I didn't used the plug and play harness. It works very well, I've had a few issues, the lens needs to be cleaned about every 2-3 weeks. It lacks adjustability for sound quality. I'm used to a lot of adjustments for competition sounds. All in all for the price it is a very good deck.
Old vehicle upgrade
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This receiver was purchased to add some modern technology to a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup. Since this is a second vehicle, I was interested in getting a decent sounding system that would play CDs, add GPS navigation, and have back-up camera display capability. The Boss met all these requirements and more so the order was placed and delivery occurred 3 days later. Crutchfield tech support resolved a few installation issues that resulted from my inexperience in ever installing an auto receiver before.
The Boss is such an improvement over the OEM receiver that even the 17 year old speakers sound noticeably better. Replacement speakers are on-order and should enable this receiver to reach its full potential. The Boss is solidly built and the mechanics of how the touch-screen egresses and rotates allows it to fit into a small enclosure. The screen will cover any controls immediately above the receiver - in my pickup: this included the transmission overdrive button and slide-out cup holder. The touch screen controls are a lot easier to adjust than the small buttons on the receiver face or remote so it stays deployed most of the time - my vehicle does not have steering wheel controls. I added some washers as stand-offs on the receiver mounting screws to allow the touch screen to tilt-back slightly without striking the dash behind it since this improves the viewing angle.
The receiver and Crutchfield support are first-rate and the drive-appeal of my older pickup is greatly improved.
Pros: Lots of features at a reasonable price. Fits into legacy single-DIN enclosures.
Cons: Forces you to get better speakers.
2011 Mitsubishi Galant
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Received the complete package in a few days after ordering. Install went very easy and all worked fine except the video playback.Talked to Crutchfield people about problem. seems when you try to play unit comes up with "out of region" no real help so I went back in and set disk to AUTO then all worked very well. The Nav is dead on and the radio output is great volume. My friends are impressed with the features.
Pros: Easy to install use a pen tip to change menus, my finger to big to select properly
Cons: hardware set delivered was wrong size, no big deal went to Ace and picked up right size screws

- Adjustable Dimmer: You can manually adjust the brightness of the unit's LCD monitor.
- Clock & Calendar: The head unit provides a clock & calendar display. The Calendar is only displayed when selected. The clock is displayed on every source, navigation, and menu screen. The head unit must be powered on to view clock or calendar.
- Multiple Languages: Select English, Spanish, or Chinese text for the system's menu.
Note: It takes approximately 4.5 seconds for the unit's motorized monitor to open and close.
Start Up Time: The Boss BV9980NV has a start up time of approximately 12.33 seconds from Off to an AV Source screen, and a start up time of 40.71 seconds from Off to the Navigation Menu.
Detachable Front-Panel w/ Hard Key Controls: The Boss BV9980NV features a detachable front-panel with hard-key control buttons and an 8-character/segment display. This display can be used during music playback for track & song information without having to use the motorized 7" monitor. Control buttons along the front-panel include a 3-way rotary dial for volume and audio settings; plus Power, Eject, Preset, Mode, Mute, and Playback buttons.
Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the pink wire connected to the head unit's rear-chassis must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. You cannot view video unless your vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, you will get a blank screen. While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, song/artist info, and the navigation on-screen map.
Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The BV9980NV offers built-in steering wheel remote compatibility with select non-CAN Bus Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru, and Suzuki vehicles. Please click here to see if your vehicle is compatible.
Note: This unit is not compatible with external steering wheel control interfaces.
IR Remote: The BV9980NV includes a 44-button IR remote control for wireless operation of the navigation receiver.
NDrive & TomTom Navigation Software: The Boss BV9980NV offers a comprehensive map database from TomTom covering the entire United States (including Alaska & Hawaii), Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands. Navigation data is stored on the unit's preloaded 4GB microSD-card for quick access and response. The BV9980NV's integrated NDrive navigation software provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct you to your selected destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map.
Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.
Map Updates: NDrive's store offers you additional free or purchasable features, such as voices or new maps that will enhance the navigation receiver's software and user experience.
GPS (Global Position System): The built-in NDrive navigation software helps you find your way to your destination with an integrated GPS receiver & external GPS antenna. The GPS antenna is designed to be installed outside the vehicle. The NDrive navigation software uses Global Position System (GPS) satellites, and a digital roadway map database to calculate and display vehicle positioning and travel direction. The built-in navigation software considers vehicle speed an heading changes, together with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on a digital map. Signal from GPS satellites are used to determine the vehicle location.
On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a yellow arrow), the recommended route (an blue line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you.
- 2D/3D Map Mode: The BV9980NV allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
- Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low.
Lane Information & Signposts: The Boss BV9980NV's navigation map offers helpful lane information & signpost guidance.
- Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
- Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
Audible Alerts: The Boss BV9980NV offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.
- Voice Guidance (Text-to-Speech): In addition to graphic directions, the BV9980NV provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.
- Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
- Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The BV9980NV provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.
Note: The unit will mute the audio of the other sources during navigation voice-prompts. You can adjust the volume level of the navigation voice-prompts independently from the head unit's main volume.

- Recent Location: Destinations that you have set previously.
- Itineraries: Create a destination and a list of waypoints.
- Coordinates: Allows you to search your destination by longitude and latitude values.
Route Options: You may select among the following route options, which will influence the navigation system's routing calculations.
- Fastest: Calculates the fastest route, regardless of the distance. It is highly recommended that you select this option; the planned route will be not only the fastest, but also more economic and pleasant, since better and faster roads such as highways are given priority.
- Shortest: Calculates the shortest route, regardless of the quality of the road. Note that this route may take more time and some of the roads may be narrow or steep.
- Tolls: Select "avoid" if you don't want to use toll roads on your route or "yes" to allow NDrive to use tolls on route calculation. Please note that even if you've selected the option "avoid", NDrive will consider toll roads, if that is the only option.
- Adventure Mode: Allows you to navigate to a location or coordinates off the beaten track; select this mode for outdoor use or traveling by sea or air. In this mode, the distance to your destination is calculated in direct aerial line and a compass will be displayed to guide you towards your destination.
Auto Reroute + Detour: If you depart from the original route, the navigation system recalculates the route and provides new directions. You can also choose to Detour around the road ahead, avoid a specific road, or around a section of the route.

I don't have a PT Cruiser so I can't speak to that, however there are little arrows on the screen and buttons to adjust the screen forward/backward so you can keep it from touching something or just change the viewing angle. Hope this helps! [ Eric Jul 18, 2015 ]
My Dodge Ram has the same vent issue. The vents still work ok but when I really need them I just push the button and lower the display. Keep in mind that when the big display is down or up, the smaller blue display is very difficult to see day or night. Also, the bluetooth microphone is too far away and not very good even if i stop and lean down and yell right in front of it. Also, no updates to the software seem to be available and customer support from Boss is not good. They closed the issue I submitted online without ever even viewing it. Never heard from them. No. I think you can buy a good marine grade box (have one on the boat that works great) or enclose it by other means and it'll be alright. [ WILLIAM Jun 18, 2015 ]
No it's not waterproof. [ Kevin Jun 18, 2015 ]
Don't know mine is in my Corvette and it never goes out in the rain. [ Johnny Jun 18, 2015 ]
No it is not. And the display needs to always be deployed. If you try to read the standard display it is way too dim. Also GPS software is not too accurate at this time. [ Andrew Jun 17, 2015 ]
No it is not. I have this installed in my Wrangler and it got rained on. While it still works, the pop-out LCD occasionally doesn't turn on. I detach the faceplate (actual radio controls) and pop it back in and then the screen comes back to life. It does still fully function with all features. [ Luis Jun 17, 2015 ]
Nope...sorry [ Russell Jun 17, 2015 ]
I don't believe so. I have it in my 2002 Jeep Wrangler and it doesn't seem water resistant at all. I didn't notice any grommets or seals around the edges that would prevent water from getting in. Great deck though. But I would look for a "marine" deck if it is going to be used on the bike. [ IAN Jun 17, 2015 ]
8 answers Why would I loose sound when I turn off the car? All of the preset stations are still there but there's no sound out of the speakers. And it looks like its playing but there's no sound. I have to hook the factory head unit back up and make sure there's sound then unplug the harness from the factory head unit and then plug in the new head unit in order to get sound but as soon as I turn the car off and then on again, there's no sound. [ Corrie Feb 19, 2015 ]
FIRST AND FOREMOST, IF YOUR VEHICLE HAD A "POWERED" SOUND SYSTEM ORIGINALLY I'M ALMOST SURE THAT THIS IS THE PROBLEM... ' [ CURTIS Feb 20, 2015 ]
Hmmmm, sounds like it could be a few things. When it initially comes on is Mute Off? Hard to say on the other stuff. Not sure what kind of car and if you have an amp. Strange that it would have sound after the factory unit is plugged and then unplugged. When you say no sound, I'm assuming you mean in all modes and it doesn't matter whether it is in blue tooth mode, tuner, CD, or GPS. That being said it sounds like the unit is defaulting to mute or some other internal setting. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I would say call Crutchfield direct and speak with their tech guys. Good luck.... [ WILLIAM Feb 20, 2015 ]
I can't answer your question. I attempted to do the install myself but couldn't. It was out of my depth. I had a local radio place install it for $75. When we turn off the car my radio still plays. Its only when we open the doors that it turns off. [ Luis Feb 20, 2015 ]
I have the same problem only one more symptom my rear speakers will not work at all I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the GM tone generating adapter [ Russell Feb 20, 2015 ]
Hi Carrie, I'm Dave and will try to help you. First, since you keep station info ,power is OK Second, if you use steering wheel controls, check this wiring. Third, Check your BT settings, since when using sound will be muted. Fourth, seems to me you have a mute problem so use your remote mute button to see if this corrects the problem. Fifth, Try to use the reset button on the front panel with a pen point. If this helps solve the sound output then you will be happy. Now I don't know why this is happening but if all not OK then the unit is defective. Hope this is helpful Regards, Dave [ David Feb 20, 2015 ]
You might have a bad relay...when you turn the car off the stereo should keep playing for a period of time then shut down or it will shut down when you open the door. Also make sure all wires are properly connected..hope this helps. [ Ric Feb 20, 2015 ]

you will need a RCA spliter [ Ron Dec 08, 2014 ]
It does only have 4 presets, treble and bass. But over all of the unit it works great i love it easy to use and install. [ Ernest Dec 05, 2014 ]
I believe there is a custom setting which allows you to set the bandwidths you want for each setting. I gave this to my step daughter and not 100% on the answer. I will check to see the next time we cross paths. I put a similar unit in my wife's car and that is what I'm basing my answer on. Sorry if that doesn't help out. I can let you know by next week for sure. [ WILLIAM Dec 04, 2014 ]
HI Alan It has both preset and 10 band equalizer. You can select via touchscreen. HOPE THIS HELPS [ David Dec 04, 2014 ]
Hey David, I had to get an adapter from Crutchfield for my Camaro, you will have to check with them and see if they have one for your Harley, I would doubt it but you can ask. If not you can cut the one off of your stock radio and use it. It's not weatherproof and the only thing it has is a case for the faceplate but no cover. [ Kevin Nov 11, 2014 ]
I didn't used a factory plug, I rewire d my entire truck. I don't know if it is weather proof because its in my truck out of the weather. What do you mean by face cover? All in all its a good deck, but it lacks a lot of adjustments for sound quality. Nothing you could have done, but I would rather have the Kenwood flip out screen. I hope this helps Zack [ Zack Nov 11, 2014 ]
yes, but the bluetooth microphone does not work well. No one can hear me when i use it. the phones mic is better [ Andrew Jul 18, 2015 ]
I don't know. [ Johnny Oct 14, 2014 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The unit does not come with free map updates, they do have to be purchased.
