JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794

You spend a lot of time on the road, but need to stay in touch. The JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794 DVD receiver gives you Bluetooth® so you can talk to your family or the office while keeping your hands on the wheel. You also get big touchscreen display with a variable color control that lets you match the receiver to your dash lighting. And JVC protects this car stereo with its Arsenal 2-year warranty so you can rest easy.

JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794

Talk hands-free and stream music

JVC includes a small USB-powered Bluetooth® adapter with this receiver — just pop it in its dedicated port on the back of the receiver and you're done. Then you can beam your entire phone book right onto the screen, and even dial out simply by saying out loud who you'd like to call. When someone calls you, just tap the screen to answer and speak naturally, as if they're in the car with you. Plus, if your phone or other device supports it, you can stream tunes through the Bluetooth connection, no wires needed.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Add navigation with the MotionX-GPS Drive iPhone® app

You can use your iPhone to put the most up-to-date maps available in your dash. Just download the MotionX-GPS Drive app, connect your iPhone with JVC's KS-U30 cable, and you'll have fingertip access to maps and live traffic.

Unlike onboard navigation systems, points of interest (POIs) are integrated with Wikipedia and Facebook, giving you more accurate search results than with pre-loaded navigation. Throw in live traffic and live map updates, and you'll have the most accurate navigation system on the planet. At 99 cents, plus $19.99 for a year's subscription, it's a fantastic value, too.

Compatibility note: Currently the MotionX-GPS Drive app only works in your car with the iPhone4. It'll work on the iPhone 3G and 3GS as a portable navigator.

Tap your way through your music library

Got thousands of tunes? Once you plug your iPod or iPhone® into the USB input, you'll have fingertip access to your music library while your player stays safely stashed away. You'll see plenty of song info on the big display, and you can switch over to your iPod's controls if your passengers want to run the show. If you add an optional cable, you can even view videos from your iPod while you're parked.

iPod note:
If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

    • Background: The unit's background color can be changed to one of eight preset colors - blue, light blue, red, green, yellow, orange, violet, or white. You can also create a custom color using a combination (0-31) of red, green, and blue.

Note: You can save separate color settings for Daytime and Nighttime driving.

Custom Background Image: While playing a video or JPEG file, you can capture an image and use the captured image as your background. When using a JPEG file as the background, make sure that the resolution is 800 x 600 pixels. The color of the captured image may look different from that of the actual scene.

Note: You cannot capture copyrighted content and image s from the iPod/iPhone.

Display Adjustment: You can adjust the brightness and black level of the unit's onscreen display. You can also adjust the contrast, color, tint, and detail level during video playback. The adjustment level for each setting is -15 to +15.

    • Panorama: For viewing 4:3 pictures naturally on the unit's wide-screen display.
    • Auto: The correct aspect mode is automatically chosen based on the incoming signal.

If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. iPhone External Mode: The JVC multimedia in-dash receiver features an iPhone External Mode which lets you enjoy audio/video content from downloaded Apps (such as Pandora, Netflix, YouTube, etc..) on your Apple iPhone. Using the JVC KSU-30 cable (sold separately), you can view video and listen to audio from downloaded Apps on your iPhone through the JVC KW-ADV794. This mode offers no control of your iPhone. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your Apps. Video from compatible Apps is only available through the iPhone 4.

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded application will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

MotionX-GPS Drive Navigation Ready: Motionx-GPS Drive turns your iPhone 4 (iOS 4.0 or later) and the JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794 into a personal navigation device for your vehicle. Providing full navigation features and song playback control from your iPhone 4, MotioX-GPS Drive also displays its map data on the connected JVC multimedia receiver's widescreen monitor (via the JVC KSU-30 cable, sold separately). Your iPhone 4 displays a choice of MotionX-GPS Driver's feature/menu screens as a secondary display (for passenger), while continuing to show the map on the JVC receiver. It even works simultaneously with iPhone 4 song playback by muting or pausing music, then restoring your volume during voice guidance through your car speakers. The MotionX-GPS Drive Navigation application covers the United States & Canada.

Note: MotionX-GPS Drive App purchase ($0.99) and download required for your iPhone through iTunes. $2.99 per month subscription fee or $19.99 per year is required for Voice Guidance feature.

External Microphone: The JVC Aresenal KW-ADV794 includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the headunit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.515" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker, the headunit's display will flash, and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the headunit's touchscreen.
    • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to KW-ADV794. Up to 5,000 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long.
    • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 each).
    • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

SMS: You can wirelessly download the short message (SMS) arrived at your cell-phone so that is can be read on the Bluetooth connected JVC headunit. Your cell-phone must support SMS for this feature to function. The SMS downloaded to this unit is cleared when this unit is turned off.

Note: Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KW-ADV794 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KW-ADV794 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KW-ADV794 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-ADV794 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

5ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KW-ADV794 is equipped with 5ch/4.0V preamp outputs (Front, Rear, Subwoofer). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: You can adjust the KW-ADV794's subwoofer level (-50 to +10) independently from the headunit's main volume control for added bass volume. You can also adjust the subwoofer phase between Normal or Reverse to blend the bass sound better with the rest of the speakers in your system.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794 features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers, and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

    • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a variable high-pass filter (40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 220 Hz or Through) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers. The front & rear channel's high-pass filters can be set independently of one another.
    • Low-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preamp output features a low-pass filter. In order to prevent high-frequencies from being sent to your system's subwoofers, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter to 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 Hz or Through.

Speaker Select: You can select which type & size of speaker you have connected to the headunit. Choose from Standard (OEM/Factory), Narrow (4"/5"), Middle (6"/5x7"/6x8"), Wide (6x9").

Pro EQ: The KW-ADV794 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Vibrant, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the headunit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Tone
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 150 Hz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 kHz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) 1.0, 2.0
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 10 dB (-5 to +5) Fixed

Note: The audio adjustments are memorized for each source until you adjust the sound again.

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set the Loudness to On or Off.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -15 to +6.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Local: You can select this function to only tune in stations with sufficient signal strength.

Mono Mode: You can activate the monaural mode to improve FM reception, when a station is week. The stereo effect will be lost.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

    • SIRIUS: The JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794 is compatible with the SiriusConnect Universal Tuner and Plug & Play Dock.
      • SiriusConnect Tuner: Connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner (item number 607SCC1) and the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100) - package # 700SIRJVC1, sold separately.
      • SiriusConnect Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100, sold separately) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SCVDOC1, sold separately).
    • XM: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Direct2 tuner and the JVC CNP-JVC1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMJVC2, sold separately).
Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

    AV Connections

Video Output: The rear-panel Video Output consists of a composite video jack that allows you to connect an optional external monitor. You can choose one of the following monitor types for the output to the external monitor(s):

    • 16:9: Select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9.
    • 4:3 Letter Box: Select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen.
    • 4:3 Pan Scan: Select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on screen.

Auxiliary Input: The JVC KW-ADV794 is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for connecting an external audio source, such as a portable MP3 player.

Audio/Video Input: The rear-panel audio/video input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks and an RCA composite video jack, allowing you to connect external equipment to this headunit. The audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:

    • AV IN: Choose when connecting an A/V component like a game system.
    • iPod Video: Select when connecting your iPod using the optional USB/Video cable (105KSU30, sold separately).

Camera In: The rear-panel Camera input consists of a composite video connector which allows you to connect an optional rear-view camera (105KVCM1K, sold separately). The unit features a reverse gear signal wire, that when hooked up will switch the KW-ADV794's display to the rear-view camera input.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (257KSU58) or the P.I.E. Auxiliary Input Adapter for JVC (469JVCJRCA), both sold separately, may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the J-port on this unit.

RGB Terminal: You can connect an optional add-on navigation unit (sold separately) to the headunit's RGB input terminal so that you can view the navigation map on the headunit's touchscreen monitor.

Very Good Receiver for the Price

Very good overall receiver. I looked at the comparable Pioneer model with bluetooth, and this far exceeds the value and quality. The screen resolution looks much better and has better clarity.

Pros: Bluetooth, steering wheel remote hookups, remote control, removable face,

Cons: microphone for handsfree leaves a little to be desired. It works but could be better.

    Just one word, AWESOME

This Head unit is awesome, I am very happy with it :)

My only problem was that the bluetooth mic that came with this unit, is defective I think :/ people told me that my voice was like a robot lol.

So I went to a friend's store and picked up a new mic and problem solve. Now everyone can hear me fine :)

    Pros: A lot

Cons: I dont have an iphone so I cant use MotionX GPS :( I do have a Android so if anyone know how to connect my android GPS to this unit please let me know the how to :)

Great unit with user friendly features

Very happy with the JVC Arsenal DVD receiver. User friendly and simple to use. Nice features for iPod connections and really like that you can change the color display to match the console. JVC seems to be the only manufacturer for double dinn receivers that are detachable which was a major concern. Great value and helpful, knowledgeable staff as usual.

Pros: Detachable face and variable color illumination.

    Cons: None

Great SQ Head Unit - Works with iOS5 on iPhone 4S

I bought this unit as an ipod upgrade from my old CD-400. My old head unit also had 4V Preouts anbut man have we come a long way. Hooking up the new JVC to my old amps I am getting much better SQ then I have ever heard from them. Boy was I surprised. Not sure what everyone is doing wrong, but Motion X GPS works great for me on my iPhone 4S. Maybe that is the difference when running iOS5. One limiting factor for me on the GPS is that I cannot use my 160GB ipod Classic while running Motion X because you need the iphone connected when using it. Problem for me because I have my whole music library on the iPod classic. I can listen to Pandora and whatever music on my iphone while being able to still see the gps map. DVD's sound and look great with a 4 speaker set up and sub. I can play burned DVD's on this unit. I can actually play just about anything on my iphone through the head unit. I can even stream You Tube and Netflix from my iphone even though the unit does not say it will. One major flaw is that the bluetooth mic sounds like XXXX on the other end but still usable. Lastly I have a strange anomoly that occurs periodically. The ipod starts up and then the audio drops off and I have to disconnect and reconnect the cable. Don't use BT Audio or 3.5mm if you want good SQ.

Pros: Great SQ and Good PQ, 4V Preouts, GPS does work, Great Price(Sale), Detachable Face, You Tube and Netflix is a bonus, BT Phone sounds great through speakers

Cons: BT Audio SQ not so great(I did not think it would be anyway - not a wide freg range), ipod Audio drops off on start sometimes but after rehook works fine, Bluetooth Mic sounds poor on other end.

    Works well...but not as advertised

I bought this unit for the advertised iPhone integration with select apps such as Motion X-Drive only to find out that is not compatible with iOS5. I almost sent the unit back but after the custom installation (with a lot of help from a special kit for my make and model purchased from another web site) I was impressed with both the quality of the system and the sound as well as the iPhone integration through Blue Tooth and the KSU30 adapter cable. Crutchfield no longer carries the cable but a quick web search showed they are readily available and I procured one. Overall this is a good unit but the issues with iPhone/app integration and a lack of ability to update the software/firmware by the user keeps this product from getting 5 stars.

Pros: Easy to use and set up Customizable display Blue Tooth included Clear Picture With the proper adapter it is easy to install yourself looks and sounds great Great value

Cons: KSU30 cable not available at Crutchfield Does not work with iOS5 Will not integrate with Motion X GPS as advertised (other iPhone apps work if you follow the instructions) User/owner cannot update software/firmware

Does not work with IOS5.0 or better

The MotionX navigation feature does not work with this unit. I called JVC technical support just to learn that they are aware of an issue with MotionX not being compatible with this unit if your iPhone is running IOS 5.0 or better. They actually suggested I downgrade my iPhone to and early version of IOS (ISO 4.x). I am very disappointed. When asked if there was an update to the JVC unit I was told not yet and that they know about the issue and there may or may not be a future update. Plus they told me if there was an update that I would have to send the unit to JVC to have it done in house (removal of the unit required). This is going back to Crutchfield ASAP.

Pros: Looks to be solidly built

Cons: Does not work with IOS5.0 or better rendering MotionX usless.

    Great unit weak bluetooth

Written By korwanguy, los Angeles on Thursday, September 22, 2011

great unit. Just so much distortion with my Bluetooth.excellent buy although the site says it will not fit certain models, you can always modify to make it work. Equalizer and other functions are great. DVD is excellent quality. The best for now until Sony develops a bluray in dash unit

The unit has some pretty bad design flaws

Written By JeremyH, Berkeley, CA on Monday, May 02, 2011

The head unit is very responsive to user input, and most of the features work well, but there are some pretty major design flaws:

    1) The unit does not automatically switch to bluetooth audio source when you make a call. It will initiate the call, but it will not switch to it. The radio will continue to play instead.

    2) MotionX GPS does not work well. The navi button shows all black, and there doesn't seem to be a way to choose "iPhone" as the video source for navigation. I can use it in "external" mode in the iPod source, but then I can't listen to the radio at the same time.

    3) The HD tuner is not smart about changing subchannels. In some cases, it tries to resync to the digital stream even when staying on the same frequency.

    4) The src button toggles through the list of sources, but this list should be editable by the user. Since most of the sources aren't available, it becomes quite annoying to cycle through such a large list.

Please see my review with the youtube video since crutchfield limits the length of reviews.

The JVC Arsenal KW-ADV794 is a fairly decent unit with a few annoying

Written By jeremy, Berkeley, CA on Saturday, April 30, 2011

Major issue: MotionX GPS is *NOT* well supported

The big selling points of the ADV794 (and the only reason I bought the KS-U30 iPod A/V cable) was its support for MotionX GPS on the iPhone. It seems that this support was more of a marketing afterthought than a well engineered solution. The ADV794 has support for "Navigation". When enabled, a "Navi" button appears on the control screen which toggles the display to a video feed from an external GPS unit. The problem is that this mode does not work with MotionX. In order to use MotionX, I need to switch to "external" iPod mode (the same as for playing video from the phone). This means that I can't listen to the radio and view the GPS video at the same time. It seems like a trivial matter of adding a "source" option to the Navigation settings to toggle between "video in" and "iPhone" (this is already available in other areas of the input menu, so why not navigation?).

    Minor problem:
When playing back audiobooks or podcasts, make sure you use "iPod" for control rather than "head unit." The head unit will not save the playback location nor honor the saved playback location.

    Minor nuisance:
It is not possible to remove an unused source from the UI, so even though I do not have satellite radio or bluetooth audio, I am still forced to toggle through them in the list.

    Minor nuisance:
The USB cable is not long enough to reach the center console. Luckily with the KS-U30, I still have about 3-5 inches of cord to play with.

    Bluetooth no Tooth

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hooked radio up, sounds real nice, iPod works pretty Quick. I've seen much worse. My only turnoff is that the Bluetooth doesn't auto. pick up all the time. I have to alway pair my phone. Sometimes the phone will disconnect. When it shows it is connected, the Radio will not pick up the call and because my phone is connected I can't hear or talk to who's calling unless I disconnect Bluetooth on my phone. That's fun while your driving! I don't know. I am calling Crutchfield tom. to see about returning the unit!

    Nice mid price receiver

Written By tater, wyoming mi on Monday, April 04, 2011

Great mid price receiver, have had for 3 days now. Controls are easy to use and love the usb for flash drive. Hard to see during the day with sunglasses on, take glasses off and you can see display fine. The crossover is hard to use for those inexperienced with frequency should have adjusted by someone who knows what there duing. I would buy this product again.

    So far so good.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is kind of a weird review for me because this is my first in dash DVD. All of the functions are easy to access and use. I have had a few connectivity issues with the Bluetooth and sound quality with the Bluetooth on calls. I will move the mic to see if that helps. Good picture quality with the DVD player and iPod video. Plenty of pre-sets for the Sat. receiver and also FM/AM. Improved the sound from my stock deck to my Infinity speakers 1000%. I am new to the car audio world but I know enough that it made the biggest difference in the world audio wise. First deck install ever, it was straight forward and easy. I was shocked that I had no major issues for a first ever install. Aside from the Bluetooth which I can probably fix with moving the mic and looking more into the Bluetooth settings, my only real complaint is the iPod control. I have not used an iPod with a deck before so I don't know if this is normal but there is quite a lag upon changing songs/albums/playlists/etc.etc. with the actual info that shows up on screen. Slightly annoying not to have the info right away. I have an iPod classic 80g and iPhone4 and the lag is equal on both. I give this unit 4 stars based on my experience but I could imagine people that have more knowledge may give less due to the iPod lag. Again kind of a weird review because of the lack of experience. Hope this helps!
