Smartphone integration

Bluetooth serves as a wireless bridge between your smartphone and your dash, enabling music streaming and hands-free phone calls with any compatible phone. But pair up this JVC and an Android™ smartphone, and you can use JVC's Smart Music Control App to harness Bluetooth's full potential — you'll be able to use your phone to change settings, EQ, and sources on your receiver with a simple gesture or a voice command.

If you enjoy Internet radio on your iPhone or Android, you'll really enjoy playing music from Pandora® and iHeartRadio® on this great-sounding receiver. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.

Added cool stuff

JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep your smartphone charged, even when it's doing several tasks at once. Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the receiver's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives. Connect just about any portable audio player using the KD-AR959BS's front aux input. Once you've got the music going, you can shape your sound with the onboard 5-band parametric equalizer.

If you're adding amplifiers or a powered subwoofer, the six 4.8-volt preamp outputs provide you the clean signal you need. You also get a subwoofer level control and low-pass filter to help you match the sub's output with the rest of your system.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

App Note: iHeart Radio playback and control requires the "iHeart Link for JVC" app on your smartphone.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Bluetooth Technology: The JVC Arsenal KD-AR959BS is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC KD-AR959BS. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the JVC Arsenal KD-AR959BS without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the JVC head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time).

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KD-AR959BS can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can also set the head unit's LCD to change colors when a phone call is received. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KD-AR959BS also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-AR959BS, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
      • Speed Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KD-AR959BS.You can search through your contacts alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). Up to 400 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone.
      • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 each).
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the JVC head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

    Audio Section

16 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-AR959BS utilizes a 16-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC Arsenal KD-AR959BS is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-AR959BS are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)
Note: When you are using the KD-AR959BS with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

6ch/4.8V Preamp Outputs with Sub Control: The KD-AR959BS is equipped with 6ch/4.8V preamp outputs (Front, Rear, Subwoofer). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The head unit's sub preamp output features a low pass crossover and independent volume control. You can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz. You can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -8 and +8 (separate from the main volume level).

High-Pass Filter (for Front & Rear Speakers): You can activate a variable high-pass filter (100, 120, 150, Hz or Through) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Pro EQ: The KD-AR959BS is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 12 preset sound modes (Flat, Hard Rock, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Talk, vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Classical, Dance, User 1, or User 2) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Q-Factor, and Level).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Q Level
    Bass 63, 80, 100, 125 Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0 -10 to + 10
    Mid Bass 200, 250, 315, 400 Hz 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 630, 800, 1.0k, 1.25k Hz 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 2.0
    Mid High 2.0, 2.5, 3.15, 4.0 kHz 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 2.0
    High 6.3, 8.0, 10.0, 12.5 kHz 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 2.0
Note: You can store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Digital Track Expander: The digital Track Expander automatically enhances compressed music files and restores the original richness of the recording.
    • Bass Boost: The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies.
    • Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set this feature to High, Low, or Off.
    • Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-AR959BS features a detachable face to deter theft. No face-case is provided. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

3 Zone Variable Color: The head unit's variable color illumination is separated into 3 Zones (Zone 1, Display Zone, and Zone 2). The KD-AR959BS offers 29 color presets and custom colors for each of these zones. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. You can choose to use the same color for all 3 Zones, or use a different color for each separate Zone.

    • Zone 1: Zone 1 consists of the rotary knob and the following buttons (Power/Source, Answer/Voice, Menu, Back, and Previous/Next Track).
    • Display Zone: The Display Zone consists of the LCD, preset buttons, and display button.
    • Zone 2: Zone 2 consists of the USB port and Aux input.

Lighting Effects + Color Guide: You can select a preset color change pattern/speed for all 3 Zones (Zone 1, Display Zone, and Zone 2). Choose from Spectrum, Groove, Techno, Emotion, Relax, and Night Sweep. When activated, the Color Guide mode changes the display and all button illumination to white when menu settings or music list search are performed.

Brightness & Dimmer Control: The unit offers a daytime and nighttime brightness setting for the LCD, button, and USB input terminal. You can adjust the brightness level of each zone manually from 0-31. The unit's dimmer control can be set automatically or manually; select "Off" for daytime brightness setting, "On" for nighttime brightness setting, or "Auto" which switches between day and nighttime brightness setting automatically when you turn off/on the headlights (orange/white wire of harness must be connected to headlamp circuit).

Day & Time: The unit displays a 12-or 24-hour clock, as well as the day (Sun/Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat). The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Remote Control

Smart Music Control App (for Android): JVC's Smart Music Control App lets you view the current status and perform simple gesture or voice control of the JVC head unit from your Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.3+). The Smart Music Control App uses Bluetooth to communicate between your Android smartphone and the CD receiver. The head unit will auto connect to the Smart Music Control app when your Smartphone is in range. The Smart Music Control app is specifically designed for easy gesture control or voice command operation while driving, so driver and passenger can access information with ease from the Android Smartphone. With the Smart Music Control App, passenger and driver can check current playing song details or other car stereo information.

    • Information Display: The JVC Smart Music Control App will display the head unit's source information, such as song/artist information and station identification. In addition, it provides EQ info.
    • Gesture Control: The JVC Smart Music Control App lets you use finger gesture commands on your Android smartphone to control the playback of the JVC head unit. This type of gesture control is designed to operate the JVC head unit from your smartphone without having to look at your smartphone. Gesture control operations include Finger tap, Finger hold, Finger click, Finger swipe (right/left/up/down), and Finger curve (right/left/up/down).
    • Voice Command: The JVC Smart Music Control App also lets you operate certain head unit function by voice commands. Voice commands include - Change Source, Search for Song/Artist/Album, Previous/Next Track, Repeat/Random, or Preset Select.

    Q
Would the jvc kd ar959bs work properly with the jvc cd-dr600c speakers and the other set of corresponding speakers?
    rob  Apr 28, 2016
    1 answer
    A
This receiver has a 4 channel 22 watt RMS per channel amp. It can power those component speakers and another set of component/coaxial speakers as well. To get the best sound from the speakers, you may want to consider installing an amp as they can handle up to 60 watts RMS. The extra power will give cleaner and louder sound. You can call an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation. Hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

I bought two of these radios for two different retro-fits (2000 Outback & Dakota )because I didn't want to have to learn two different operating systems. The blue-tooth/phone link sounds fine both ways receive & transmit. Clear as a bell. Regular audio is interrupted when you either receive a call or initiate one.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota and I recently replaced the door speakers with Kicker 41DSC6746 -3/4" 2-way speakers 240 watt. Are these speakers compatible with this radios power output?
    nick r.  Aug 09, 2015
    2 answers
    A
Yes the speakers are compatible. The rating of the speaker is only what it can handle at brief intervals. A good clean amplifier with 20-50 watts rms is typically all you'd ever need for clean loud sound. The radio should be able to supply a good 15-20 wrms power signal without much distortion. If you're looking for more or deeper bass then you should consider running an amplifier with a dedicated subwoofer.

When you buy from crutchfield you get everything you need to install your stereo. Except tools and wiring splices/ butt connectors. It is easy if you are familiar with connecting wires to each other. You do not need to cut any wires, just connect the proper wires with each other.

Everything was provided for me to install this receiver in 2 vehicles, my 2005 Dodge Dakota and my 1999 Audi A6 Avant. Their was some relatively minor work to connect two harnesses provided by Crutchfield. The technical support number was able to provide the information needed. I did not have to buy anything additional beside what was specified for my cars in the order entry process.

Hello! I installed it myself, everything was included from Crutchfield for my vehicle. I ordered the installation kit with it. I would say the hardest part is figuring out how the dash comes apart. And the wiring adapter has to be spliced to the radio as well, which if you are not comfortable attaching the wires together, that ma be a problem for you, but colors and instructions were great!

Installed it myself, with a friend that has helped me before installing radios. It was easy once we got the dashboard apart. We didn't use any special tools for putting it in to a Kia Accent. Installed a sub woofer at the same time since I had the dash apart.

You're question is very vague but.... Everything you need to install the radio is in the box and only for the radio. Which means no RCA cables, no extra speaker wire, no extra power or ground cables, and no custom bracketry. only what you would need to replace a current radio of this type which is a single din style. Depending on the vehicle you're installing this in you made need an install kit to accommodate your dash opening and you may want to purchase plug in connectors to match the factory connectors. Crutchfield usually includes all of this free of charge as long as you give them your vehicle info. As far as ease of installation, in my opinion, single din style radios are the easiest just plug and play with some basic connections. Please contact Crutchfield with your specific vehicle info because putting a radio in is the easy part, getting the old one out can be a major undertaking depending on your vehicle. Keep in mind that almost all newer cars and trucks no longer use traditional radios or an actual radio body, more of just a face plate which is bussed info from the radio module hidden elsewhere in the car this is why we'd need to know what year, make, model you have.

I installed it in a 95 4Runner and it works great, just follow the installation instructions. Yes, the lights on the display can be dimmed. The way to do that is addressed in the owners manual of the stereo, once purchased. I personally have not dimmed the lights on my display, and I don't mind how bright it is at night. It is far less distracting than driver's who blind you with their brights on.

you shouldn't have a problem using this radio as long as you make the same connections to the factory amp as the factory radio. either speaker level or line level. you may want to double check with crutchfield tech or sales support to see if you'd need any adapters or special installation procedures.

If it fits in the dash, I don't see why not. The site should tell if it is compatible with you're car.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Will Turn By Turn directions from an iPhone be heard through the car speakers via blutooth when Sirius XM in in use?

I don't have an iPhone nor use Sirius XM but can say that in my everyday use I cannot use BT Audio while playing my iPod via the USB port. While doing so, my turn by turn directions are played through the phone speaker. If I change the mode on the hu from USB to BT Audio, then the turn by turn directions are audible via the car speakers. Maybe there's a way to toggle between the two but I haven't found it yet.

Sorry I can't answer fully your question. I don't have the XM feature or an I phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy and it does well with turn by turn instructions in all the other modes, i.e. Bluetooth audio, FM, AM, and CD operation. I hope this helps.

I honestly haven't used the USB drive to date since I installed this unit. I don't think that getting a 64gb would be a problem, and it should read all of the files. Though as I said, I am not sure. This is an amazing unit, I just love it. Good luck.

RCA's work fine and all the crossover controls work with these outputs just fine. I changed out an older Sony and noticed that the outputs were more prone to noise pickup, but I had cheap RCA cables. changed out with better cables and noises no longer present. I have 3 Amplifiers (none are JVC) and have no problems with my current setup. I don't use any of the radio's own internal amplifier outputs (speaker outputs). I hope this helps you.

Works fine. I am running the RCA;s to a 4 channel amp then to a set of components and a pair of mids. JVC head unit all the rest is alpine except for an 8" amplified bazooka tube. no complaints.

Will the steering wheel control buttons still work with this? I drive a base 2014 v6 mustang. Also, how much of an improvement in sound is it for anyone with the base Ford sound system?

the sound quality is way better than a stock receiver, I put this unit in my 01 f150 with stock speakers and the sound was amazing, I believe this unit has steering controls built in so it will work

Hi Tyler - my 2006 Mustang doesn't have steering wheel radio controls but I'm pretty sure there's an adapter (search Crutchfield or engage them in online chat - their support is GREAT!). The improvement in sound over my factory Shaker 500 system is fantastic with this JVC unit. Couldn't be happier with it.
    harrison  Aug 05, 2014

While any unit is an improvement over the factory one, the extras make this a good choice. You need to look at JVC accessories to see if they offer an adapter for the steering wheel controls

The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Yes. It displays the time if you want it to. There is a display button that changes the display to show the radio station, song title, time, etc. You just have to choose to leave it on the time option.

I haven't tried out all of the things that this unit claims it can do yet. It does claim that it can do voice assisted dialing. Also has an option of downloading an app called JVC smart music, that will enhance the voice controls. Again i haven't tried these options yet. Good luck.

It works with my Samsung Galaxy Centura phone so i'm sure it will work with an S3, being that it is a better phone than the Centura. Voice control works as far as calling people , not for changing radio stations though. Great stereo imo !!

Yes it does if paired with your contact list in your phone. Its a little slow to react and speaking clearly and slowly is required but it does work well when you realize the requirements. I hope this helps.

The JVC Unit comes with a small speaker you can mount anywhere in the front cab area of vehicle. I mounted on the the steering wheel column. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, and a Samsung Galaxy S2 as well. I made a BlueTooth connection & was able to answer, talk, and hang up with both Android devices just fine. The sound quality is good coming through speakers. The person on the other end of call said I sounded fine as well. You should have no issues.
