Features

Product Overview: The KW-AVX800 double-DIN multimedia unit includes a DVD/DVD-Audio/CD receiver with a 7" motorized monitor. It also has CD changer control, Bluetooth capability (with adapter), an integrated SD Memory Card slot behind the front panel, built-in surround sound processing, A/V line input, A/V line output, a USB input, rear camera input, is satellite radio ready, and has dual zone capability.

Motorized 7" TFT LCD Monitor: The KW-AVX800 features a motorized 7" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 display with an adjustable viewing angle. The pixel resolution of the display is 1440 horizontal x 234 vertical (336,960 pixels total). The LCD serves as a video monitor and system information display.

Digital to Analog Converters: For high quality audio and video performance JVC uses a 192 kHz/24-bit audio DAC and a 108 MHz/12-bit video DAC.

Display Angle: The motorized display can be tilted (up) to one of seven angles.

SD Memory Card: The KW-AVX800 is equipped with a front panel slot that will accommodate SD Memory Cards with MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC (not purchased from the iTunes store), or JPEG files.

Note: The required recording format is FAT 32/16/12 and the recommended storage type is 8 MB to 2 GB.

Source Volume Control: The volume of each source (other than FM radio) can be adjusted relative to the FM volume, so the level is constant as you change from one input to another.

Wallpaper: You can choose from four background wallpapers; Warp Drive, X-Face, Wave, or Ring. The wallpaper color can be changed from blue to sky, green, red, yellow, purple, dark blue, dark sky, dark green, dark red, brown, or black.

Selectable Aspect Modes: You can choose from four aspect modes for the in-dash display:

  • Regular: for 4:3 source material, 4:3 and 16:9 pictures display with black bars on either side (16:9 images are compressed)
  • Full: expands 4:3 pictures horizontally to fill the entire width of the screen, distorting the picture slightly but retaining full image height
  • Panorama: expands 4:3 pictures horizontally only at the edges
  • Auto: the correct aspect mode is automatically chosen based on the incoming signal

Monitor Type: You can choose one of the following monitor types for the output to the external monitor(s):

  • 16:9: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9
  • 4:3 Letter Box: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen
  • 4:3 Pan Scan: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on screen

7-Band Equalizer: Along with a flat preset, there are eight preset EQ curves and three user programmable fields; Hard Rock, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Dance, Country, Reggae, Classic, User 1, User 2, and User 3. The user presets can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -10dB to +10dB in 2dB increments.

Speaker Size: Like home surround receivers, you can adjust the following speaker size settings:

  • Front: Small or Large
  • Center: Small, Large, or None
  • Rear: Small, Large, or None
  • Subwoofer: On or Off

Speaker Level: You can adjust the output level of each individual speaker from -10 dB to +10 dB.

Speaker Distance: You can adjust the speaker output timing separately for each individual speaker (excluding the subwoofer) according to the distance from the speakers to the listening position. The distance for each speaker can be adjusted from 6" to 240" in 6" increments.

Compressed File Playback: The KW-AVX800 can play MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, JPEG, DivX, MPEG1, and MPEG2 files recorded on DVD-R, DVD-RW ,DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW discs and SD memory cards (no DivX, MPEG1, or MPEG2 on SD cards). The disc must be recorded in ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, or Romeo. MP3 and WMA files with bit rates from 32-320 kbps and AAC files with bit rates from 16-320 kbps are supported. DivX versions 6.x, 5.x, 4.x, and 3.11 with resolutions 720 x 576 or less are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 5000 files and 250 folders, with a maximum of 999 files per folder.

Dual Zone Capable: The line level audio/video output allows you to route DVD playback to an optional back seat monitor and headphone system, allowing front seat passengers to enjoy any other source except SD card or USB input. You can also turn on a Headphone Surround feature for the rear audio output.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-AVX800 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

Source Naming: The KW-AVX800 allows you to assign names of up to 16 characters each for the A/V input, the EXT input (connected to the CD changer input using an optional adapter), and up to 30 AM and FM stations.

Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 5 volt front and rear stereo preamp outputs, this unit has single preamp outputs for the Subwoofer and center channel, each also 5 volts. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from -6 to +8, and a selectable phase setting that can be adjusted to Normal or Reverse. A second audio output is RCA stereo outputs for the rear zone.

Crossover: The KW-AVX800 has an internal crossover that allows you to choose 80, 120, or 150 Hz. This crossover acts as a low-pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output and a high-pass filter for the other speakers (front, center, and rear) set to the Small setting.

Audio/Video Input: The audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:

  • Audio + Video: choose when connecting an A/V component like a VCR
  • Audio: choose when connecting an audio component like a cassette deck
  • Navigation: displays map from an outboard navigation system

Camera Input: There is a single RCA input for an optional rear view camera. With the reverse gear signal wire connected, the display automatically switches to this input when the vehicle is in reverse. There is also a setting to show the mirror image of the rear view camera.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item number 105KSU57 or 257KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The KW-AVX800 has a steering remote control jack on the preamp output harness. When used with the optional SWI-JACK interface (item number 127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display is always dimmed), or Dimmer Time Set (you program the time for the dimmer to turn off an on). The degree of dimming can be adjusted in the setup menu, from 0 (brightest) to 10 (darkest).

Top Notch System

Written By Chaka Bracey, Alabama on Tuesday, September 23, 2008

This system is highly deserving of all the high reviews! Inexpensively priced
and loaded with features. I've had mine now 10 months and I'm REALLY
tough to please when it comes to car audio systems. I've done more in the
last 18 years than I'd like to admit. :-) Many years ago I had a JVC (tape
deck) and I hadn't looked at JVC for some reason as Kenwood had
assimilated me (they still make great products!) but after much research I
took a leap of faith. With it's price and all the features: usb, sd card, 5.1
built in, compatable with blue tooth, satellite radio, 5 volt rca outputs etc.
made this a "no brainer" purchase. The BEST news is that this system IS
compatible with a Navigation system! One had to do a fair amount of
research which I did. Check out the GARMIN GVN-53 or its predecessor the
GVN-52. You'll have a seperate remote for the navigation unit. Those
familiar with Kenwood's systems may remember their add on navigation
system model KNA-G510. This also is a "hide-a-way" black box style unit
that is compatible with ALL monitor systems with A/V inputs (it's in the
manual on page 48). Components from several good manufacturers over
the last 15 or so years ie Diamond, Eclipse, Lanzar (old school), Phoenix
Gold and a PAC steering wheel control interface all integrate well with this
unit. Sadly JVC changed their model lineup however if you can find one of
these units still available don't overlook it. It's worth the investment even
with buying the Garmin separately.

It has design problems but Great for the price

Written By John, New Iberia LA on Thursday, March 27, 2008

The unit is great for the basic feature dvd radio ect. but the extras are not all that extra.

1) The USB is terribly slow if you have a lot of files.
2) Ipod controls are not user friendly
3) Divix Playback and supported formats not well explained in documentation

All in all im happy with it for the price but I would like to see JVC inprove on the interface for Ipod and USB

BEST DD under $1000!

Written By Joel, NEw Jersey on Friday, February 15, 2008

I would like to start my reviews by stating the Pros and Cons of this Unit.

PROS:

1.The best unit under $1000
2.Plays DIVX files
3.Reads picture files and different music formats
4.SD Card and USB input
5.You can hock up a portable hard drive
6.SAT Radio Ready
7.5.1 Surround Sounds
8.Bluetooth (needs additional accessory)
9.User Friendly Controls
10.Crystal Clear 7inch Screen
11.Elegant design
12.Sounds great
13.Free Backup camera (Promo)

CONS:

1.You can't play movie files on SD Card! (WHAT THE HECK!)
2.No GPS not even GPS ready (I don't need it since I have a separate GPS)
3.Load time is sometimes slow
4.The Touch screen LITERALLY Freeze up in cold temperature (28F below). You need to warm up the unit and the cabin of your car for it to start working again.
5.You cant customize the wall paper

Overall it's worth the price tag. One more thing to all Saturn VUE owners, this unit will fit you're standard double din enclosure. I just don't know why Crutchfield indicates that "This item does not fit"

Great UNIT for the Price!!!

Written By Raymond, Richmond, VA on Tuesday, January 29, 2008

First off, it doesn't have Navigation, or the option of it. If you don't need it, this unit has everything else and more.

It has an SD slot, and a USB Cable. The SD cards can be used for Music, and Pictures. The USB can be used for Music, Pictures, and Videos. I have a 120GB Portable HD in my Glove compartment with 4000 songs and 40+ DIVX encoded movies on it.

I purchased the Bluetooth module, and can stream music from my Cellphone, in addition to making and receiving calls.

I would highly recommend this unit.

Nice screen, awesome bluetooth, iPod Controls not good

Written By Mick, Seattle, WA on Tuesday, January 29, 2008

The good: touch screen is very nice and very easy to use, video looks good, Bluetooth is perfect, TONS of input options, features galore, good sound controls, USB hard drives work fine and are powered by the unit.

The bad: iPod controls are horrid and not designed for the LCD display, load time for USB, SD, or disc can take a while if you have a lot of files.

Excellent Upgrade

Written By hondaclf, Baldwin, NY on Saturday, December 15, 2007

I just upgraded to this headunit from another JVC (KD-LH810) and I am very happy so far, I already had the 12 disc changer so it was a must to stay with JVC. I've only had it about a month and besides getting it to fit in my car it has been amazing. i have work to do to get it to look good in the dash but I will work on that, who says you can't put a double-DIN reciever in a Volvo 240! it does take some getting used to but the controls are pretty easy to master. I had wondered before what the real differnece was with Pre-amp voltage output and now I know, I forgot when I first hooked it up that only one sub was connected, the KD-LH810 had a dual plug for the sub out, this has one for sub and one for center. Previous HU had 2V outputs and this has 5V, the Polk components rrunning off of Kicker amps sound even more amazing and the subs can just about rattle your teeth out. I am also going to see if I can hook up both the ipod control and changer to the unit, I have a little electronic work to do.

JVC KW-AVX800

Written By Lowone1, Ohio on Monday, December 03, 2007

This is an outstanding product by JVC. By far the best bang for the buck when it comes to double din LCDs. The picture quality and sound are fantastic. I previously owned the JVC KW-AVX705 and recently upgraded to this unit. What a difference. The bluetooth adapter needed some effort for my Windows powered mobile phone. The phone book would not upload. I loaded a bluetooth program called Jetware mobile on to my phone and that solved that issue. The only feature that is still giving me a problem is text messaging, but I can live with that. The radio recongnizes my phone quickly once I'm in the car and the head unit's phone controls are easy to use.

The USB feature is what sold me. I have 250 GB drive hooked up and have successfully play music and videos. The only fault I have is that it only recognizes one type of data at a time. Say you are listening to MP3s on the hard drive and want to watch a video from your hard drive. You have to change the file type in the setup menu, then the heaad unit rescan the drive for videos.
The only real downfall I found was lack of an add on navigation unit. It lists as a menu option, but JVC does not make one and most all handheld GPS units do not have video out.

Other than that I am very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this unit.

I love this unit

Written By Michael Z, Sacramento on Sunday, December 02, 2007

I have had my JVC unit for 6 months now. I must say, this is a great unit. My only concern is that every now and then, I will have to reset the unit because it freezes up. There is a small reset button on the face that you use a pen or pencil to reset it. Resetting this unit erases all of your settings and throws everything back to it's default status. I have become proficient at resetting all of my preferences, but it is annoying. I am not sure if it is just my unit, as I have perused many forums trying to find any more info on this issue, and I have not found any. Other than that this unit is great, as mentioned above you can hook a mini-hard drive to the USB port, but note; it has to be formatted in FAT32 only. With all of these options available, this is by far the best in dash DVD head unit you can buy for the money.

Very Good Head Unit

Written By Jerry, New Orleans, LA on Tuesday, October 23, 2007

I have been reviewing double din dvd players for months now and decided to go with the JVC. The fact that Crutchfield offered the free back-up camera help me make my decision as well. I put it in a 07 Ford 4-door Lariat. I must say it looks great. I replaced the door speakers with Pioneer 6x8 and added a Infinity amp. Along with the 2 - 10" eclipse woofers and MTX amp pushing those, this is a awesome sounding system. The JVC is very impressive as far as sound and picture. The bluetooth function works great. DVD's are very clear and crisp. I would definitly recommend this unit to someone.
